Housing A Family In Danbury

cross Connecticut, an ambitious effort to take major steps toward ending homelessness within 100 days kicked off on March 11, combining the efforts and resources of many agencies across the state.

The 100-day challenge to end homelessness involves advocates, activists, service providers and others working to put existing resources together more effectively to advance the goal of ending homelessness. New Reach’s Housing First Collaborative team in Norwalk has been working with agencies across the region to meet the challenge. In her role as navigator for the Fairfield County family 100 day team, New Reach Critical Time Intervention (CTI) case worker, Jodyann Prendergast, helped guide the Caldwell Family to a new home.

O

Evicted after a fire, which left her son blind, Ms. Caldwell and her four children found themselves with nowhere to live. Working with the shared resources of the Fairfield County 100 day team, Jodyann was able to locate and secure housing for the Caldwell’s in Danbury and successfully divert them from a shelter stay. The team came together to identify the housing, negotiate the lease, provide the security deposit and even basic furnishings. Expressing her gratitude, Ms. Caldwell said, "If it was not for this program, I would not be in a home with my family again. We have a fresh beginning." ■

A Letter From Kellyann Day, Chief Executive Officer

leven years ago the Partnership for Strong Communities launched the Reaching Home Campaign based on a simple premise: Homelessness is unacceptable. It is solvable and preventable.

This powerful idea has guided the fight to end homelessness in Connecticut for over a decade. Its inherent truth has inspired stakeholders across the state to work together to find solutions to end homelessness in all of its forms for all of our citizens. Connecticut has invested in solutions and the results are irrefutable. We are winning the war against homelessness. We are on track to end chronic and veteran homelessness by 2016; and family and childhood homelessness by 2020. There is a very bright light at the end of this tunnel. As I reflect on the efforts of the many people responsible for the success of the Reaching Home campaign, I am humbled by the way our community has risen to the occasion: setting aside differences, standing by our commitment to work together and staying the course. The work we have done proves that it does indeed “Take a Village.” The power of many far outweighs the capacity of any one individual or organization. While the challenges at times seemed insurmountable, our perseverance has paid off. While our work is not done, we now know that it soon will be. At the 10th Annual Reaching Home Celebration and Housing Awards Dinner, our former resident of Life Haven and supportive housing client, Jolene Ball, was selected to receive The Carol Walter Supportive Housing Tenant Award for New Haven. While we can now count in months instead of years the time it will take to end homelessness in Connecticut, we still need your support to reach our goal. Let’s finish strong. Let’s finish together.

Volunteer Recognition Breakfast Those who can, do. Those who can do more, volunteer.

O

n Wednesday, June 10th New Reach held its first Volunteer Recognition Breakfast at Amarante’s Sea Cliff in New Haven, which was sponsored in part by AT&T.

At New Reach we believe we can make a difference in the lives of women and children who are experiencing homelessness, but the agency could not achieve its goals without the help of our volunteers. Board Member Bernadette Welsh welcomed all attendees with a heart-felt thank you and AT&T’s Director of Legislative External Affairs, Kelly Wade-Bertucchi, spoke about her passion for the mission of New Reach and how honored she is to be able to be able to help the organization. New Reach recognized five volunteers/groups at the breakfast. Vertical Church was honored for the work of members of the congregation, as well as the congregation as a whole. Eleven years ago, Town Fair Tire’s commitment to the mission of New Reach began and their volunteerism continues today through events like the auction, Adopt-A-Family and the Back to School Supplies drive. For many years, students at Quinnipiac University have been extending a helping hand to New Reach in different ways, from painting, raking, and collecting work clothing for residents to go on interviews. The number of QU groups that have come to help New Reach is endless! Carolyn Cary and Sue Spight were honored for making Wednesday nights at Martha’s Place a time to relax, release and renew for the women living at the shelter. Barbara Nelson, New Reach Board Member, shared beautiful remarks for the volunteers in attendance, “For those of you who have volunteered because you care, because you want to give back or because you know it’s important, we at New Reach thank you. If it was not for the more than 1,000 hours that were clocked by our volunteers last year, we could not have achieved all that we have.” If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact Rachael Lynch at 203-492-4866, ext. 35 or via email at volunteer@newreach.org. ■

Hamden Students Making A Difference

A Special Thank You From a Martha’s Place Resident

I

would like to thank everyone at Martha’s Place for all they have done for me. I’m extremely grateful.

All the staff are respectful to you, as they expect from us back. Carmen Muniz, the shelter manager, will go above and beyond for any one as long as you’re trying to help yourself as well. I cannot thank her enough.

Hopefully I will one day get back on my feet so I too can do whatever I can to help Martha’s Place.

Alysia Foster, she’s wonderful. No matter how busy she continues to be, she’s always smiling and trying to help us with job placements, apartment rentals, Section 8 or any type of housing. If housing is available, Alysia will find it. Thank you to all the staff who made me feel at home and safe.

N

Thank you to the people who volunteer and bring food for the women here. Pat who not only cooks, but when she cooks everything is from scratch.

I hope Martha’s Place continues to stay open and receive all the help where ever they receive it to keep running. Hopefully I will one day get back on my feet so I too can do whatever I can to help Martha’s Place.

This was my safe place when I don’t have a home of my own and I hope all the women that come and go feel as lucky and safe as I am. ■

Open House in Norwalk

ew Reach welcomed the community during an open house for the Fairfield County Housing First Collaboration. Our goal is to end chronic and veteran homelessness in Fairfield County.

“Across the country, the Housing First approach is enabling communities to make significant progress in ending chronic homelessness, including Utah, which recently announced that they have effectively ended chronic homelessness. With the adoption of Housing First and the use of evidence-based practices like Critical Time Intervention, New Reach and its partners have taken an important step to achieving an end to chronic homelessness in Fairfield County.” – Richard S. Cho, Senior Policy Director, United States Interagency Council on Homelessness. ■

The month of April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and the Hamden High School Gender Equality Club wanted to make a difference. For one week members of the club sold bracelets and held a contest on who could guess how many M&Ms were in the jar. The club raised more than $500 to help homeless women and children! During April, the Gender Equality Club was raising awareness throughout Hamden High School by asking students, faculty and administration to sign a banner about sexual assault. The leadership of co-presidents Adele Gelperin and Bethany Keyl has grown the Gender Equality Club from five to more than 25 members over the past two years. Their goal is to ensure equality for all! ■
