ANNUAL REPORT 2014 Building Compassion in the Community A Grandmother’s Love in Bridgeport
L
ee is a loving grandmother. Taking care of her grandchildren, Melissa, age 10 and Dominic, age four, is a full time job. Lee has cared for her grandchildren since they were babies and continues to provide a safe home for them. Before retirement, Lee worked at Stamford Hospital and loved working in patient care. Unfortunately she was forced to retire early and her income dramatically decreased. With less money coming in, Lee was falling behind on rent and utilities. Lee feared she was going to be evicted. Due to unfortunate circumstances, Lee’s grandchildren were in need of care. Her grandchildren are her first priority, including providing a roof over their heads. Dominic is autistic and attends a half day pre-K class. While he is nonverbal, Dominic is doing well in his current school. Melissa is in fifth grade and Lee often helps her with homework assignments. Lee believes in a good education for her grandchildren and without a stable home, a child’s academics risk being interrupted. Stacy [New Reach staff] When Lee came to New Reach’s Bridgeport Stable Families Program for help, she entered the door with an optimistic outlook.
“
“I was so happy when the staff at New Reach returned my call when I needed help,” expressed Lee.
was there for me,” Lee shared, “Stacy took my problem and walked me right through it. She helped me more than I could ever have imagined.
Right away, staff started working with Lee in identifying programs to assist her in paying her rent. The staff helped Lee complete an application for a kinship program to aid in her back rent and utilities. Lee was approved by the program and has money to pay for the rent she owed and for next month’s rent.
