ANNUAL REPORT 2014 Building Compassion in the Community A Grandmother’s Love in Bridgeport

L

ee is a loving grandmother. Taking care of her grandchildren, Melissa, age 10 and Dominic, age four, is a full time job. Lee has cared for her grandchildren since they were babies and continues to provide a safe home for them. Before retirement, Lee worked at Stamford Hospital and loved working in patient care. Unfortunately she was forced to retire early and her income dramatically decreased. With less money coming in, Lee was falling behind on rent and utilities. Lee feared she was going to be evicted. Due to unfortunate circumstances, Lee’s grandchildren were in need of care. Her grandchildren are her first priority, including providing a roof over their heads. Dominic is autistic and attends a half day pre-K class. While he is nonverbal, Dominic is doing well in his current school. Melissa is in fifth grade and Lee often helps her with homework assignments. Lee believes in a good education for her grandchildren and without a stable home, a child’s academics risk being interrupted. Stacy [New Reach staff] When Lee came to New Reach’s Bridgeport Stable Families Program for help, she entered the door with an optimistic outlook.

“I was so happy when the staff at New Reach returned my call when I needed help,” expressed Lee.

was there for me,” Lee shared, “Stacy took my problem and walked me right through it. She helped me more than I could ever have imagined.

Right away, staff started working with Lee in identifying programs to assist her in paying her rent. The staff helped Lee complete an application for a kinship program to aid in her back rent and utilities. Lee was approved by the program and has money to pay for the rent she owed and for next month’s rent.

“Stacy [New Reach staff] was there for me,” Lee shared, “Stacy took my problem and walked me right through it. She helped me more than I could ever have imagined.” Lee is continuing to work with the Stable Families Program on budgeting and other supports for her and her grandchildren. At Thanksgiving, they enjoyed a meal provided by the program, thanks to members of the community.

“Sometimes you just need a helping hand.” n

Stable Families is supported by the Bridgeport Public Housing Residence Support Fund administered by the Fairfield County’s Community Foundation.

Building Compassion in the Community

– Dalai Lama

ompassion is a core value at New Reach and is practiced every day. We are realistic in knowing sometimes, it’s difficult to be compassionate, in the face of real challenges. But when we keep our minds and our hearts open, we can practice compassion and it may just result in happiness for us and those around us. I am inspired everyday by the commitment and compassion of the board, staff, volunteers and clients at New Reach. It is not always easy to stay positive, happy and compassionate when you are struggling with homelessness, poverty and health challenges. Many of us can all recall a time when we felt unsure of what was coming next in our life, when we worried about a loved one’s health, or when we experienced a heartbreaking loss. It is during those times we make choices….we can let those challenges and worries bring us down, or we can focus on making a change and choosing to be happy. New Reach’s volunteers practice compassion and help spread happiness throughout the organization. Volunteer, Sydney Allen’s compassion will provide happiness to homeless children for years to come through the renovation of the children’s room at Life Haven. Carolyn Cary, a volunteer from Spring Glen Church, and friend Sue Spight ensure the women at Martha’s Place have a place to relax and renew themselves every week.

New Reach partnered in the city of New Haven’s 100 Day Challenge to End Homelessness to house the most vulnerable homeless individuals and families. This challenge provided an opportunity for the community of services providers to come together to solve chronic homelessness. New Reach’s Carmen Brown and Meredith Damboise took on leadership roles in the challenge, resulting in housing over 150 homeless people.

I am inspired everyday by the commitment and compassion of the staff, the volunteers year of 2014 proved to be exceptional and transformational as and the clients at The we changed our name to New Reach, complete with new logo, New Reach. created a strategic plan to strengthen and extend services and

programs, secured funding for a new supportive housing development, and agreed to expand New Reach initiatives through partnerships in Fairfield County. These transformations renewed the board and staff’s compassion and dedication to our mission.

As we look ahead to 2015, New Reach is committed to practicing compassion and addressing homelessness in both New Haven and Fairfield Counties. Success can take place when organizations, corporations, volunteers and members of the community partner with each other to make a difference. Join us in practicing compassion. Sincerely,

Providing a Safe Place for Children

ttorney Elizabeth (Betsy) McMahon has always believed children are our future and that, above all, we need to do what is necessary to protect and give children the stability they need to grow into productive and happy adults. The first step is to make sure children have a roof over their heads and food on the table, and New Reach can provide these important basics. Betsy does more than just talk the talk, throughout the year she helps New Reach in achieving its goals of providing homeless children with a safe place to stay. Whether it’s being a sponsor of a special event or donating bedding or attending an event, Betsy is there supporting women and children. “New Reach is a strong non-profit that works every day to build stronger futures for the women and children who turn to them in need,” Betsy shared.

I can’t fix the world all by myself, but I can make a difference through New Reach.

New Reach sheltered 185 families last year at CareWays, Life Haven and Martha’s Place. Staff work with women to connect them with the resources they need to reach their full potential. Betsy believes, “We all deserve to do more than just survive. You can’t begin to parent without a place to call home and a bed to tuck your babies in.” How can a mom even think of reading bedtime stories when she doesn’t know if they will have a place to live tomorrow? And what does the world look like to a child who has no home?

“I can’t think of anything worse than not being able to provide shelter for your children,” continues Betsy, “I can’t fix the world all by myself, but I can make a difference through New Reach.”

New Reach is a strong non-profit that works every day to build stronger futures for the women and children who turn to them in need.

More than 300 children walk through the shelter doors every year. Through the SEARCH (Services, Education & Activities Reaching Children who are Homeless) program, children have the opportunity to just be kids. SEARCH provides activities such as homework help, arts & crafts, music, and dance. SEARCH would not be possible without supporters like Betsy and community volunteers who donate their time and talents to the program. Betsy is committed to building hopeful futures for homeless women and children.

Guilford Interact Club brings new technology to Mar tha’s P l a c e

“To bring the women of New Reach a little bit of happiness gives us all so much joy,”Guilford High School Interact Club President, Sophie Kaplan, said when explaining why the Guilford Interact Club continues to support the work of New Reach.

New Reach gives hope and we want to be a part of that process and give hope to as many as possible.

The Guilford Interact Club has made it a priority to support New Reach in their mission of giving strength and hope to women by shopping for robes and gifts for the women and children at the holidays, and supporting the agency through the club’s fundraising efforts. Every May, Guilford Interact Club holds a Cry Baby Golf Scramble that includes obstacles at each hole for some added extra fun. This year, the Guilford Interact Club met with Guilford Savings Bank President, Tim Geelan, who mentioned the bank would be upgrading their computers. Sophie began talking to Mr. Geelan about Martha’s Place and the pressing need for new computers to help the women write resumes, and search for jobs. She explained the GSB computers would be an investment in the future for these women. After learning about Martha’s Place, Mr. Geelan and the bank staff were eager to help. Sophie coordinated the refurbishing of the computers with the bank’s IT Department and in November new computers were delivered for Martha’s Place. Guilford Interact Advisor Al Jacobs adds, “The club understands that there are women a scant 11 miles down the road from Guilford in need of support, and by supporting New Reach, the members do have the ability to affect a positive change in a woman’s life by giving and caring.”

Homelessness can happen to anyone and is not just happening in urban areas. Sophie shares the club’s belief that, “New Reach gives hope and we want to be a part of that process and give hope to as many as possible.” Thank you to the Guilford High School Interact Club for their many years of commitment to New Reach’s mission. And a special send off and farewell to Sophie Kaplan as she graduates and heads off to college in the fall. n

Ladies Night A Community of Women

ednesday nights at Martha’s Place are known as Ladies Night. It starts with a warm meal, prepared by volunteers and local restaurants. Women and children gather in the dining room as a community to enjoy a meal together, with support and laughter. After the meal, there is the opportunity to take part in Relax, Release, and Renew, a wellness program created and held by volunteers Carolyn Cary and Sue Spight. “The program provides an oasis to the women after a long day,” explains Sue, “I want them to feel and receive the support and inspiration from each other so that they can move on from where they are at this very moment.” Relax, Release, and Renew compliments New Reach’s Wellness Program, which is offered twice a week by New Reach’s Wellness Counselor, Yartiza Roman. Relax, Release, and Renew was developed after Carolyn’s years of experience with women’s retreats and life-coaching. It’s a quiet time for women to find respite and release their burdens through self-care and self-soothing techniques.

“The goal is for them [the women at Martha’s Place] to understand that some of the challenges they are dealing with all women deal with,” Carolyn continues, “I want them to find peace, strength and gratitude within themselves while providing the women with support as they move forward.” Carolyn has created a 12-week curriculum that includes a variety of topics to help the women replenish their spirits, release the day’s stress, and focus on moments of goodness.

It’s about community and women supporting women. n

ara and Veronica are roommates at Martha’s Place and have found support both within each other, from the staff at New Reach, and at Ladies Night. Kara and Veronica never miss Ladies Night and look forward to it week after week. “It is a time where you can find yourself, ask yourself questions and find the answers yourself,” Veronica shared.

The relaxation and peace Kara and Veronica have found on Ladies Night has lead them to encourage other woman to participate.

“It’s nice to have someone who sincerely wants to help,” expressed Kara, “And I make sure I let Carolyn and Sue know that.” Kara and Veronica have both found safety at Martha’s Place and are working on securing housing and employment. With help from New Reach staff, Kara is working on completing paperwork to be housed through New Haven’s 100 Day Challenge to End Homelessness. n Please note, names of clients have been changed for anonymity.

I wanted to do something that had meaning for my senior project.

One Amazing Newtown Senior mazing is one of the words used repeatedly to described Sydney Allen, Newtown High School Senior, who turned the children’s room at Life Haven into a space filled with joy, safety, and hope. Sydney was introduced to Life Haven by her congregation, Vertical Church of West Haven whose members volunteer throughout the year by gardening, raking, painting, and more. Sydney began spending time after school with the children in the SEARCH program (Services, Education & Activities Reaching Children who are Homeless). SEARCH provides children living at the shelter with activities such as homework help, arts & crafts, storytelling, music, and dance. When it was time for Sydney to begin working on her senior project for school, Life Haven immediately came to mind. “I wanted to do something that had meaning for my senior project,” Sydney expressed.

Sydney took her idea to remodel the SEARCH room and ran with it. She began by holding her own tag sale to raise funds for the project. From there, she began outreaching the community for support. Businesses such as Lowe’s donated flooring and Bob’s Discount Furniture provided a gift card to purchase furniture for the space. Every weekend, from October to December, Sydney was at Life Haven painting, sweeping, and decorating. Sydney had a remarkable crew to help her carry out her vision. Mike Yannes put his carpentry skills to work and was with Sydney each weekend. Sydney’s parents, Lisa and Scott, supported her throughout the project and put in many man hours themselves. On December 2, 2014 a ribbon cutting was held to unveil the renovated SEARCH room. Sydney dedicated the room to a special child, Janiah, whose family recently moved out of Life Haven. Janiah and her mom attended the celebration; Janiah cut the ribbon alongside of Sydney. “Every child deserves a place to be loved and feel safe,” Sydney stated at the ribbon cutting, “This room gives children a place to relax, have fun, and forget about their current stresses.” n

A special thanks to all the volunteers and supporters for making this project possible:

A Safe Place to Start Over or two years, Tina worked in a shelter and never thought she would find herself living in one.

“I was helping people,” Tina expressed, “I never thought I would find myself on the other side of the fence seeking help myself.” It was not until Tina’s relationship turned abusive did she decide it was time to find a safe place for her and her children. Tina, mother of four, found help at Life Haven when she was 24 weeks pregnant upon moving to Connecticut. Connecticut was new a place for Tina, filled with many unknowns. She had little family in the area and was unaware of many community resources. Life Haven gave her a place to start over. Life Haven staff provided Tina with a shoulder to lean on, ears to listen, and advice where she needed it. Staff assisted Tina with applying for jobs and housing and the support she needed. “The staff at Life Haven never passed judgment,” Tina shared.

I was helping people,” Tina expressed, “I never thought I would find myself on the other side of the fence seeking help myself.

Tina’s children regularly attended the children’s program at Life Haven, SEARCH. SEARCH gave Tina’s children a place to make hand puppets and paintings. Janiah, Tina’s oldest, completed her homework every afternoon in the SEARCH room. After a few months of hard work, Tina delivered a healthy baby boy, secured a job, and received financial assistance to obtain housing. “We were given a fresh start,” Tina stated, “We all face obstacles in life and I would not have been able to overcome mine without the support from Life Haven.” n

Women Helping Women In Hamden Heather Kissel and Jackie Campagnuolo are entrepreneurs and owners of Jh Hair Design in Hamden. Heather and Jackie’s clients are women. “We realize that as a woman owned business that we need to be there for women,” says Jackie. Heather and Jackie were interested in finding an organization that helped women and children and found New Reach, Inc. through a friend. Jh Hair Design is now a place where women are continuing to help women. Heather and Jackie have set up several drives in their salon to collect basic household supplies. The women put together a complete Thanksgiving dinner for shelter residents to enjoy. “The more we became involved, the more we realized New Reach is constantly striving to make sure what they are doing is working to get women back on their feet,” says Heather. Adds Jackie, with Heather nodding in agreement, “we want women to know if they put their mind to it, and have a little helping hand from other women, they can do it. We want other women in the community to know that by helping the women who need assistance, they can and will make a difference in a life.” Jackie and Heather believe whole-heartedly in the New Reach Team. “We feel strongly that we want do our part to help New Reach succeed in their mission of building hopeful futures for women and families,” shares Heather. n
