About The Spero Magazine In Latin, spero means “I hope.� It can also mean hope for; trust; look forward to. It is our intention that this monthly magazine highlights all the positive expressions of hope within our school.

Latin is also one of the two languages our students learn throughout their career at New Hope Academy.

Partnership with CPA New Hope Academy is excited to partner with Christ Presbyterian Academy (CPA) for some wonderful ministry and fellowship opportunities throughout the next three years. This fresh partnership kicked off with two fantastic events this month. On Thursday, September 20th, a special evening with retired MLB All Star player, Darryl Strawberry encouraged the audience with inspiration of God’s redemption. Then the entire New Hope community was invited out to a special tailgate party on the CPA campus before their high school football game. This fun evening was a great example of hospitality as CPA served NHA families dinner, refreshments and fun activities for the kids.

1st Grade Exploration First graders enjoyed a sunny day of exploration at Green Door Gourmet. They learned about soil and the best treatment for growing healthy veggies. A nature hike and time spent trying different types of vegetables and herbs gave them new insight to God’s masterful creation. But in the end, it was the fun time they spent together that had them grinning from ear to ear.

Cool Science Experiment p.10

Fifth graders investigated the food chain with owl pellet dissections. Pellets are the regurgitated food from the owl. Students examined the bone content shown in the pellets to determine what the owl had eaten – whether mice, mole, or birds.

Second Grade Nature Study

Second graders went to the W.P. Ridley 4-H Center in Columbia to further their study of rivers. They waded in the creek with nets hunting for river wildlife. They found minnows, snails, snakes, and even a snapping turtle. Then, the students explored the animals on display such as cockroaches, snakes, piranhas, and spiders. They played an outdoor game that taught them about camouflage.

Then they came up close and personal to some “creepy� critters. What a great day of exploratory learning.

Roasted Crickets Anyone?

As a part of their humanities study of ancient Rome, fourth graders learned how many cultures, both past and present, have eaten insects as a source of protein. Then students were given an opportunity to eat roasted crickets. The tasting became a lesson these students won’t be quick to forget.

Pre-K Water Day

The Pre-K classes had a lot of fun saying goodbye to the summer with their end of season water day. Complete with water slides and play stations, these students got wet and had a blast.

Fun with Math

Mrs. Souers made math fun and interactive with her first grade students. They began by collecting seeds on their nature walk and then practicing their counting with seeds in hand for a math game. They also had fun adding, as they jumped through their number ladders outdoors.
