New Hope Academy

About We believe that changing our culture begins with understanding, and that understanding takes place in genuine relationships.

Separately, we remain impoverished and underprivileged – the poor and affluent alike. Together, we become empowered, lifting one another to a Christ-centered life.

We provide a Christ-centered, exemplary education to students from Pre-K through sixth grade. Classes are capped at 14 students per classroom, with 40-50% of our seats reserved for students from low-income families.

For the 2017/2018 school year we served 144 families, representing 217 students.

Mission New Hope Academy is a Christ-centered community school with an economically, racially and culturally diverse student body.

It exists to serve low-income families by establishing a solid biblical worldview, instilling vision, confirming hope and preparing each young person for a life of service.

New Hope has been in Franklin, TN for 22 years. The school started in 1996 with a radical mission to provide a Christ-centered education to all students, while intentionally reserving seats for the low-income students in our community. This daring approach, right from the start, has meant that the school will forever have to depend on GOD’s provision. And GOD has been faithful – blessing us throughout the years.

Jehovah Jireh means, “The Lord will provide.”

GOD asked Abraham to do the impossible. GOD asked him to do something that nearly all of us today would struggle to respond to. In Genesis 22 we read the story of Abraham being commanded by God to take his son Isaac to Mount Moriah and sacrifice him. Isaac was the son of promise, a miraculous gift from GOD. He was the child whom GOD had promised to make into a great nation. Or so it seemed, until GOD said to lay him on the altar and offer him as a sacrifice. As the story goes, just as Abraham was about to sacrifice Isaac, GOD provided a ram.

“And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. So, Abraham called the

name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.” Genesis 22:11-14 I feel that story epitomizes the story of New Hope Academy. The Lord will provide! In the 22 years of New Hope’s history, GOD has provided in miraculous ways. Hebrews 11 tells us that Abraham acted in faith that God would raise Isaac. He obeyed in the belief that God would provide a miracle of some kind, and God did – a ram caught in a thicket as a substitute sacrifice.

Based on our mission and our economic model, it requires the level of faith that Abraham had. Because this model does not work on its own, it requires faith that our GOD will provide. And GOD has done that in various ways and through so many people. I want to thank you for your part in making this mission possible throughout the years. I trust what GOD is doing, and I believe He is using you. You are a part of the story He is writing about New Hope Academy. You have played an integral part in helping us provide this amazing Christ-centered education to low-income students for 22 years.

I pray that you will continue to follow GOD’s prompting to support the efforts of this ministry. Continue to pray, volunteer, financially support, and trust with us that God will provide.

A Note from our Board Chair

Courtney Yezerski 2018/2019 Board Chair

New Hope Academy has had a tremendous impact on the life of my family.

The first day my oldest showed up for Pre-K, his teacher greeted him with such respect, asking how he would like to be received each day – with a hug, high five, or handshake. I was so moved that they would consider his individual needs, especially since we’ve had issues with him not wanting to be touched.

Unlike other experiences, my son had his voice heard at New Hope.

The respect that our teachers provide to our students is evident throughout the entire school. The differences of all our personalities, cultures, and backgrounds can merge so peacefully at New Hope because we place a strong commitment on valuing each person as God has made them. In my experience, this lesson is not taught but is lived out in service to the Lord. Our staff lives out the scripture to our children, teaching them as young students to love others as themselves, thus impacting the world for change.

Appreciation for all people extends to our families as well. I couldn’t have imagined how the community of New Hope Academy would impact my life so profoundly. The friendships I have built with fellow parents, and amongst the staff and faculty, have given me a deeper understanding of the Gospel and brought me a richer value for life. People are so kind and generous, and I have been so blessed to have my need for community fulfilled through this body of people. Thankfully, the blessing of friendship has extended to my children as well. The impact of New Hope Academy is truly generational.

It’s for these reasons, and so many more, that I am honored to serve as Board Chair. I hope that you will take time to get to know some of our families at New Hope Academy. Discover for yourself the impact our school has on our community.

We have a plethora of opportunities for you to engage and volunteer. We welcome you to experience our all-school morning devotions held on Monday and Friday mornings. From there, you might consider joining us in a volunteer role or supporting our mission through a financial gift. Without the support of our donors, we would not be able to continue our life-chasing mission.

We are so grateful for the support given to New Hope Academy. I am pleased to report that New Hope’s trustees are completely committed to helping us achieve our vision for the future, while ensuring our sustainability for today.

Every new academic year brings a host of new challenges and financial commitments, but it is our belief that our mission is strong, and God will provide through the faithfulness of our donors. As we welcome in the 2018/2019 academic year we remain pledged to this responsibility.

Giving for Change An interview with Scott Roley, who has supported New Hope Academy since the foundation

Scott Roley

Scott Roley served in pastoral leadership at Christ Community Church for over 20 years, first as a youth minister and later as their ordained pastor. Guided by the Bible and the experience of John Perkins, a poor sharecropper’s son from Mississippi who grew to forge a new beginning for racial reconciliation and poverty empowerment, Scott began sharing and encouraging others to join him in reshaping our community. He began individually, adopting children and living amongst the poor in The Hard Bargain community of Franklin. As his passion grew, so did the impact he had on getting others to invest in the vision of supporting our community by ending poverty and bringing about racial unity.

One of those individuals was Paige Pitts. “We had the opportunity as a team to travel to Mendenhall, Mississippi to observe what John Perkins had started in his community,” Scott said. “They had built up a school in addition to the medical center, community center, and other programs. With her educator’s training and God’s direction, Paige realized that it would take daily involvement in a child’s life, through a school setting, to help bring about radical change in their lives. Paige cast the vision of combining classical education with caring for the poor, and that was the start of New Hope Academy.

“As a pastor, I had the platform by which to help motivate and connect people.

With the help of many volunteers and people committed to giving, we were able to launch a community development initiative here in Franklin,” Scott said.

“There were so many amazing ways God worked to encourage this project. God used so many people and organizations throughout the community to give continually to see the fruition of the school taking place.”

But the support didn’t stop once the school opened. Throughout the years Scott continued to witness how donors kept the school going. “There were hard times financially since we operated on a different tuition structure than other private schools,” Scott said. “We held true to our mission to use the school as our ministry and relied on the faithful provisions of our donors. There were a few times we’d end a Thursday afternoon with no clue on how we would make payroll the next morning, and then overnight a donor would come through and infuse us with the cash needed to pay our teachers. God worked so many

miracles. Including how God has blessed us with the right teachers who embrace our mission wholeheartedly. To this day, we have the most amazing group of teachers and staff working at New Hope Academy.”

“New Hope Academy is the best kept secret in education,” Scott said. “This school is the answer our educational system needs. We have found a way to intentionally bring people together in unity, giving all people an equal opportunity for success. But it takes the sacrifice of many people who are willing to give financially to keep New Hope Academy going.”

“For the longest time, New Hope Academy has had the right people coming together to sacrifice their talents, time, and money,” Scott said. “It is amazing that today we remain debt free on our beautiful property, serving our community after 22 years. I pray our mission never ceases. That we will always have the right donors willing to support New Hope Academy. Because when it is all said and done, community efforts like providing housing, food, jobs, etc. are all great, but education is truly the way to help end generational poverty. It all starts with providing an exceptional education to students, who can grow to get a college education, land a good job, and begin a new trend of security and provision for their family.”

About Scott There’s a lot Scott has been involved in amidst our community. He has helped to pilot the establishment of multiple community efforts including the launch of Mercy Community Healthcare and Hard Bargain Association. Although Scott has retired after serving for over 20 years in church leadership and on the New Hope Academy Board, he now volunteers through various community initiatives, and strives to empower others to step up to help.

Volunteer Impact Featuring long time volunteer and supporter, Kay McCorpin

“Sometimes it’s hard to explain to someone the unique mission of New Hope Academy.

It’s something you have to experience, because there’s just no other place like it.

At the heart of all we do is life-changing racial reconciliation through Christ’s love.”

More than 20 years since Kay McCorpin sat as a member of Christ Community Church hearing Paige Pitts share the vision for a school, Kay is still investing her time serving at New Hope Academy. Currently, Kay volunteers in a support position, helping out at the front desk or substituting for a class. Her sweet smile and kindness draws others to her, and she is a welcome addition to our team.

Back when her children were enrolled at New Hope Academy, Kay began her volunteer work by committing to different roles. It was through her involvement that she found instant community amongst the parents. “Because it’s a small school, it has been easy to jump in and find your spot to serve,” Kay said.

“I’m passionate about serving behind-the-scenes to fulfill our mission.”

“There’s just no other school like New Hope Academy,” Kay said. “It is a school with a special and active mission. I love to be here, watching the kids grow as people. This school perpetuates loving one another well, no matter your differences.”

With two decades of involvement at New Hope Academy, what is it that keeps Kay involved? “New Hope is a family. When your child graduates and leaves, you may take a step back for a season, but then it feels like a loss of family,” Kay shared. “You love and miss your family and desire to be here.”

“And once you are here, you pick up on what makes NHA so unique,” Kay said. “Sometimes it’s hard to put into words and express to someone else because there’s just no other place like NHA. The mission of racial reconciliation is life changing. Our teachers strive daily to honor Jesus and bring Him into the classroom for the students to experience. It’s truly amazing.”

Kay has had the blessing of witnessing first-hand the life-changing blessing of New Hope Academy. “I’ve seen so many children have their lives changed forever,” Kay said. “My son even met his wife here in the first grade.”

Kay encourages you to take part in New Hope Academy. Come visit, volunteer, and get involved in how God is working in our community through New Hope Academy. “It is so important that we keep the mission of this school going,” said Kay. “It is important for us to come together because you don’t want to see this school disappear. It is worth your investment, as we raise up leaders and strive to bring about racial reconciliation through the love of Christ.”
