Many may look at the Career Planning Steps and method and think that it is just for those who are young in their careers. This process is for all PGA Professionals as we can help those who are looking for new opportunities, looking to negotiate a better deal at their current facility, or beginning to think about the end of their careers and how to set themselves up for that transition into retirement.
As PGA professionals, we see every day how getting our students to lay out their goals and objectives for golf and then preparing a lesson plan to get them to their goals as golfers helps them achieve and enjoy the game more. I hope that you will take the same approach to your Career and reach out to me so I can assist you in laying out a plan and the steps necessary to achieve the goals you have for your Career.
Greg Koch, the 39-year-old Director of Instruction at the prestigious RitzCarlton Golf Club, Grande Lakes, has once again proven why he stands as one of the most formidable talents in the golf world. With his fourth consecutive Rolex Player of the Year award, Koch inches closer to the record of 10 consecutive wins, held by his fierce competitor and friend, Rod Perry, who claimed the title every year from 2009 to 2018.
Koch’s 2024 season highlights include capturing the Section Championship title in dramatic fashion, clinching the victory over Perry in a playoff. He showcased his skill by dominating the East Central Chapter Championships. In the Pro-Pro Championship, Koch partnered with Matt Borchert, Director of Instruction at Isleworth Country Club, where the dynamic duo left their competitors behind to take the title.
In addition to his standout performances in section tournaments, Koch made an impressive showing on the national stage, finishing a strong 21st in the PGA Professional Championship. His success at this level has earned him spots in multiple PGA TOUR events, including a notable appearance in the Valspar Championship. Fans and players alike eagerly anticipate his upcoming participation in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship in November.
This latest Player of the Year honor solidifies Koch’s legacy within the golfing community, marking him as one of the most consistent and skilled players on the scene. With his sights set on closing the gap to Perry’s record, 2025 promises to be another year of thrilling golf for Greg Koch.
Sandra Changkija has been named the 2024 Rolex Women’s Player of the Year, capturing the title for the second time in her career. At 35, Changkija, who works with the LPGA, has continued to elevate her game, showcasing her skills and dedication across both national and international stages.
This year’s performance underscores her commitment to excellence. Changkija’s season highlights include a decisive victory at the Women’s Section Championship and a runner-up finish in the competitive East Central Chapter Championship. Her achievements earned her a spot in the 2024 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, with her consistent performance qualifying her for a return to the prestigious 2025 tournament as well.
One of the standout moments of her season was representing Team USA in the Women’s PGA Cup, where her contributions helped secure the championship for the team, bringing pride to both her country and the PGA.
As she celebrates her second Women’s Player of the Year title, Changkija’s season stands as a testament to her talent and unwavering passion for the game. Her impressive year promises even more accomplishments as she continues to make waves in the world of women’s golf.
Renowned golf professional Rod Perry has been named the 2024 Rolex Senior Player of the Year, marking his first win in this prestigious category and expanding an already remarkable career in the golfing world. At 51, Perry, the Head Professional at Crane Lakes Golf & Country Club, continues to showcase his excellence on the course, now adding Senior Player of the Year honors to his legacy, which already includes a record 13 Rolex Player of the Year awards, including an unprecedented 10 consecutive titles from 2009 to 2018.
Perry’s 2024 season highlights a dominant year for the seasoned pro. He captured the Senior Section Championship, the Senior Stableford, and the Tournament of Champions, showcasing his consistency and skill across the board. In a hard-fought battle at the Senior Match Play Championship, he finished as runnerup, displaying the resilience and competitiveness that have defined his career.
Competing nationally, Perry held his own among elite competition, finishing a respectable 17th in the Senior PGA Professional Championship. His achievements this season also earned him the honor of competing in two of the sport’s biggest events for senior players—the U.S. Senior Open and the Senior PGA Championship.
This Rolex Senior Player of the Year title is a fitting addition to Perry’s illustrious resume, underscoring his lasting influence and skill in the sport. Known for his dedication, Perry remains an inspiration to fellow professionals and upand-coming players alike.

What special area do you feel your expert in and what is a key best practice?
I think Merchandising would be my favorite spot of the job. I have been lucky to win 3 Chapter Merchandiser of the year awards for Private clubs so thats pretty cool. To ensure that our operation is smooth for our members, the best thing we can do is train and engage staff in the process. Give them the tools to understand the clothing or clubs. Let them in on the process of receiving inventory and how you price things. The more they understand and learn a merchandising operation, the more info they can pass along to our members. Finally, giving them a “Piece of the Pie” as an incentive goes a long way to ensuring the staff is engaged.
Professional growth is a continuous journey, what is your secret?
You keep plugging away and always make yourself better. Try to do all the education you can. The more you know, the more prepared you will be for the next opportunity. Dont let the daily grind of the business get you down. Keep looking up!
What advice would you give a young PGA Golf Professional?
Work at the biggest name facilities you can. This will significantly increase your resume success in the future. Get to know your members. Ask about their lives and what their story is. You will learn a lot from their experience and you can use that to your professional and personal advantage.
Who is your dream foursome and where would you want to play?
My dad and my two grandfathers. The course that I have always liked was Tabacco Road in North Carolina. What a great layout!.

Professional growth is a continuous journey, what is your secret?
As a Director of Player Development and PGA Professional, my area of expertise lies in fostering long-term development for golfers of all ages and abilities. One of the key practices that I’ve implemented is incorporating the American Development Model (ADM) into both my junior and adult programs.
By tailoring lessons and experiences to the individual’s stage of learning, I create a structured path for improvement that combines technical skill-building, mental game strategies, and personal growth.
The best practice here is to balance structured, goal-driven training with fun, engaging experiences that keep students committed. It’s about building a supportive, learning-centered environment where players are accountable and inspired to progress at their own pace.
Professional growth is a continuous journey, what is your secret?
For me, professional growth comes from a combination of curiosity, continuous learning, and reflection. I’m always eager to learn from other coaches, my students, and even my own experiences on the course. Staying up to date on new methodologies, technologies, and coaching techniques keeps me evolving as a professional. One of my “secrets” is viewing every day as a learning opportunity. Whether it’s through formal education like a new certification or simply observing how different players react to challenges, I make it a point to absorb and apply those insights.
What advice would you give a young PGA Golf Professional?
My biggest piece of advice is to always test your methods on yourself first. As a coach, it’s important to fully understand what you’re asking of your students, and the best way to do that is by trying it yourself. Whether it’s a swing drill, mental exercise, or fitness routine, I believe that if I haven’t tried and tested its effectiveness, I can’t truly coach someone through it.
Additionally, never stop learning. The game of golf is constantly evolving, and so should you as a professional. Surround yourself with mentors, engage in ongoing education, and most importantly, build meaningful relationships with your students. Coaching is not just about delivering information, it’s about inspiring growth and creating lasting impact.
Who is your dream foursome and where would you want to play?
My dream foursome would start with my father, who introduced me to the game and fostered my love for it. The time we’ve spent together on the course is something I’ll always cherish deeply. I’d also include my brother, with whom I grew up playing. Sharing the game with family has created countless memories that mean the world to me.
Lastly, I’d want to play one more round with my best friend, Frank. He was taken from us too soon in 2021, but we shared a special bond through golf, starting in high school and continuing into our young adult years. Every time I tee it up, I think of him, and I’d give anything to have just one more round with him.

The members of the Chapter met at Adena Golf & Country Club on September 9 for our Fall Meeting. It was a pleasure to be back at Adena after so many years. Our guest speaker was Mark Russell, retired PGA TOUR VP of Rules and Competition. The presentation gave all of us a unique perspective about life on the TOUR. Special thanks to ECC Secretary David Damesworth for being so instrumental in having Mark join us. I would also like to thank Keith Fisher for taking some extra time with the group discussing career consulting information.

We are reaching out to all WCC members and associates to help with a food drive for those who have been affected in our area by hurricane Helene/Milton. We are asking each course to reach out to their memberships, daily golfers and residents to donate nonperishable food items or cash. The drive will start Monday, October 28th and run through Sunday, November 10th. All items will start being picked up on Monday, October 28th. Once all items are collected, we will go out to those areas that have been greatly affected and set up stations to pass out the donations. If we have cash that is donated we can offer to prep meals to be passed out. I can’t think of a greater opportunity to show what an impact our WCC can make on our community in need. We would love to have some volunteers to help with this process. Here are some ideas to help with the drive:
• Email blast all your memberships, golfers and residents about the drive.
• Promote it on your website.
• Offer a round of golf for 4 or other items to raffle for those who donate.
• Offer a discount off golf for bringing in a donation.
• Free small bucket of balls with a donation.
• Set up a drop off bin in the pro shop or clubhouse.
I know we are all busy but I think everyone can find a little time to give back to their community in need. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Rich Unger at 813-299-5539.

As we wrap up 2024, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our PGA Jr. League Coaches. This year, we’ve seen over 1,700 juniors participate in a PGA Jr. League program, accumulating over 2,300 registrations. This is a testament to our dedicated Coaches and the variety of programs they tirelessly run year-round. Additionally, there’s still an opportunity to host a winter program, with players needing to be registered and team kits ordered by December 12th. It’s a fantastic way to build momentum leading into the 2025 Spring season.
To all professionals who hosted in 2024, don’t forget to submit your deferred compensation points and complete the Player Engagement Value Tracker. The Value Tracker is an excellent tool for measuring and communicating your value to your facility, board, or management. This information is vital for negotiating compensation, requesting facility use, and understanding the substantial impact you bring as a PGA Professional. By tracking and showcasing your contributions, you reinforce the indispensable role you play and strengthen your position in discussions with facility stakeholders.
PGA Jr. League provides an “easy button” for you to offer a world-renowned junior program with the flexibility to tailor it to the needs of your players, community and facility. That will continue in 2025, with a few specific updates to make it easier for you!
The annual #GameChanger Club fee is increasing to $110.
The platform fee will be reduced from 5% to a standard processing fee of 3%.
The #GameChanger Club fee, which is paid by players and their families, will still include access to the local league, custom uniforms and Team Kit gear, league management software through the PGA mobile app and participation in as many PGA Jr. League seasons as your players and their families want in 2025.
The updated uniforms honor the traditional blue and orange of PGA Jr. League but also feature other colors from the PGA Jr. League brand. Uniforms will reflect U.S. sizing standards, and adjustments have been made to allow for more comfortable sizing on girls’/women’s jerseys.
Team Kits will be updated on a yearly basis from here on out.
Plus, uniforms will be individually packaged by player, making the process of distributing gear easier for you.
Registration for Coaches and Programs opens on November 4th. If you’re looking to join a Multi-facility league, ensure your program is registered by January 24th and reach out to me! League announcements are scheduled for early February, following the PGA Show. During this period, we will also conduct our Coaches Meetings in person at a facility near you.
