After an introduction to archery session with veterans from the local VA, the ques­ tion that got the most attention and discussion was: Why is there a Tigershark on my bow?

I guess it stems from the habit of making any piece of gov­ ernment issued equipment our own. That sure broke the ice and would be a topic in suc­ ceeding sessions.

The Tigershark appeared on P-40s flown by the famous Flying Tigers. Since then the design has appeared numer­ ous times on Thunderchiefs and Phantoms over Vietnam to Warthogs over Iraq (including armored vehicles). At its most basic, these are platforms that launch a projectile at a target, just like a bow.

Continuing archery ses­ sions gave the VA further op­ portunity to research the ben­ efits of archery on vets with Post Traumatic Stress Disor­

der (PTSD). Readily apparent at each session was the calm and mindfulness necessary to shoot well. It was reported they looked forward to future sessions and were actively pursuing a new interest by reading and researching over the internet.

Adding to the above, the vets started making the bows their own using their person­ al designs and elements. Cre­ ativity is always a good thing and they were making substan­ tial progress at archery. They all felt great and challenged to do better at the next session.

Overall indicators that they were beating PTSD. In practical application, by making the bow your own, it substantially reduces the chances of picking up some­ one else’s bow and bringing it to the shooting line. It is also a reminder of all the men and women who are in harm’s way on air, land and sea. A symbol­ ic gesture of support for all the fine work they do to keep us safe and secure.

“It was a tough moment and I couldn’t deliver my best throughout the whole match but finally I got a good result so I’m very happy,” said Kim. “I’d like to repeat as World Cup Champion next year again."

Lee qualified for Samsun by beating Kim to gold at the stage of the tour in Antalya.

Since then, he’s lost two major finals to his veteran teammate; first, at the Asian Games in Jakarta and now at this Hyundai Archer}’ World Cup Final.

“I need more confidence to beat Kim Woojin. This competition started in Antalya, where I had enough confidence, but when 1 lost at the Asian Games I lost some of my confidence,” said Lee. “1 wasn’t sure I could beat him this time. If I get another chance, I should be better prepared.”

Kim beat world number one Steve Wijler of the Netherlands in the first round, Australia’s Taylor Worth in the semifinals, and then stepped out in the finals arena one last time with teammate Lee. Sticking to his own prediction of either he or Brady Ellison taking gold, Woojin led from the be­ ginning to the end of the five-set match.

Woo Seok looked to be mounting a comeback when he shot a perfect 30 in the fourth set to pull the score to 5-3, but Kim delivered his own unbeatable 10-10-10 in the fifth to leave the result out of ques­ tion. He won it, 7-3.

“I knew if I’d shoot nine points [with my last arrow] then I’d win the match. 1 didn’t feel much pressure and that brought a better result,” said Kim, who finishes an up-and-down international season — in his own words - with a definite up.

■‘There are more competitions in Korea so I will concentrate on that and then, when the season finish­ es, I’d really like to go on vacation.”

Lee Woo Seok finishes his debut international season as a full-time member of the Korean senior squad with podiums at all five major events - three Hyundai Archery World Cup stages and the Final, and the Asian Games - he attended.

The recurve men’s bronze medal match between four-time Hyundai Archery World Cup Final Cham­ pion Brady Ellison and Australia’s Taylor Worth went the full five sets and even further.

Brady delivered a 10 in the shoot-off to beat Taylor’s nine and collect yet another podium finish at this tournament.

“The shooting this year in the men’s recurve at the World Cup Final has been ridiculous,” said Brady.

“We all shot so well. I think it’s just gonna get better and better and harder and harder.”

After Sara Lopez’s win in the compound wom­ en’s competition on Saturday in Samsun, has drawn level with Brady for the most career wins at the Hyun­ dai Archery World Cup Final; both have four.

“I’m happy for her but I’m mad at her at the same time,” added Ellison. “Good shooting Sara.”

EXPLORE BOWHUNTING Explore Bowhunting delivers hands-on lessons about gear, tactics and wildlife to teach bowhunting to beginners. Through a partnership with the Archery Trade Association (ATA), the NFAA is now offering this ATAcreated program to spark interest and passion for bowhunting.

The program enriches students' wildlife encounters through bowhunting lessons like reading signs, judging distances and building natural blinds. It emphasizes wildlife habits and habitats, strengthens students' appreciation for nature, and equips them with the knowledge, confidence and skills to enjoy bowhunting for years to come.

Through a series of comprehensive activities and presentations, the course teaches students with no previous bowhunting experience the basics to

get started. Studentswill be introduced to both the equipment and field skills hunters utilize to be successful. Explore Bowhunting activities teach students to recognize animal signs, build ground blinds, judge distances, make animal calls, and more. It's designed to teach students howto feel comfortable in the outdoors whether the goal is to bowhunt, photograph wildlife, or interact with nature for any purpose.

Courses can be structured in a variety of formats, including: week long half-day camps, week long fullday camps, four half-day sessions, 6-week after-schoo. programs, and many more. Customize the course based on your audience and course goals.

We are currently developing an awards program to accompany the course and will be releasing more information soon.

The NFAA is offering train the trainer sessions to affiliated clubs and shops who are interested in providing the course to members and customers.

With ten points separating her and 2nd place Erin McGladdery, Cara needs to just hang on and make fellow competitors catch her. Banging out three 12s out of her five shots, Sharon comes from third and settles into second to push for a 6th and final arrow. The ASA staff sets up a 41 yard McKenzie Hill Country Deer for their final target. Emily shoots first, attempting to catch a 14, but to no avail and scores a 5. Sharon and Erin both tied with 456, score a 10 and and 8, respectively. Cara must shoot a five to pull out the win and does just that, scoring an eight for the win!

he time has come for the ASA TruBall I Axcel Kentucky Pro/Am and looking at the weather forecast had a few shooters questioning their attendance this weekend. With a forecast of 90% chance of thunderstorms on Thursday and Friday, and a 50% chance on Saturday and Sunday, Mother Nature was planning on a wet, rainy weekend. However, for most of the weekend the storms burned off when it really counted and we were able to get all shoot times/ classes in without any hiccups.

The Pro Pressure Point Shootdown was held on the baseball field west of the tournament village, after a short rain delay. The targets set for the shootdown... the McKenzie Javelina, Blesbok, Strutting Turkey, Large Alert Deer and Russian Boar, with the Hill Country Deer set aside for 6th & final arrows, etc.

The Senior Pro field scores are pretty close with a 10-point spread. After a slow start on their first targets, we see a lead change with Jeff scoring a 14 on the Strutting Turkey. As Jeff takes over the lead, Tony feels the pressure and takes aim at a 14 on the Strutting Turkey, as well, but comes up short with an 8. Tony U.S. Archer Inc. 35th Anniversary

continues on to his next target with a 12, while Jeff scores an 8 just low of the lower 12-ring... creating a 1-point difference. Down to the 6th and final arrow, Jeff shoots an 8 on another 14-ring attempt, while Tony needs an 8 or better to take the win...he scores a solid 10. While Tony and Jeff were battling for 1st spot on the podium, John and Scott were taking aim at one another...who would take 2nd and 3rd? Tied on score AND bonus rings with 478 / 12 after the 6th and final arrow, John and Scott shoot a 7th arrow from 35 yards to see who will hit the target closest to the center of the lower 12. John Clifton comes out with the win, almost a perfect center lower 12.

Another exciting show from the Open Pros in the London shootdown...Tommy, in 5th coming into the final five targets, lets his fellow competitors know he “ain’t scared” and shoots for 14s on each one of his final targets, coming up just shy of the 14-ring on the first four, but prevailing on the Large Alert Deer.

Meanwhile, the race is tightening up between Dan, Levi and Joby. Dan shoots a 14 out of the gate, with Joby and Levi shooting 12s. Levi scores an 8 on his second target, possibly a little shaken, but comes back strong with a 12 and two 10s on his final shots. Down to the 6th and final arrow, only Levi and Dan are left.

Dan shoots first, aiming for a 14, but comes up a little short and scores an 8. Levi must score an 8 to win, and takes a solid 10 to close it out.

The Known Pro final five...what can we say, we’re seeing some familiar faces in this crowd!

Nathan with a 6-point lead over fellow Elite Pro, Chance tries to hold on and maintain his lead. He starts out pretty good with a 10, followed by three 12s, but with Chance shooting two 14s to start and following those up with two 12s, the final three competitors in the 6th and final arrow are Nathan, Chance and Aaron. Aaron shoots first, taking aim at a 14, coming up short and scoring an 8. Nathan also takes aim at a 14, but scores low of the 14-ring for an 8. Chance hits a center 10 to take the top podium spot!

Women’s Pro Podium (Lto R): Emily McCarthy, 2nd place; Pam Hockman, 1st place; Sharon Wallace, 3rd place hooters from all over the country, and a few from overseas, are gearing up and heading to Metropolis, Illinois for the next ASA event! Ready to withstand some steamy temps this weekend! Some of our shooters have arrived early for the annual Super­ man City Shoot hosted by the city of Metropolis. The City Shoot is a great opportunity for shooters to get some additional practice in prior to the main tourna­ ment, our final stop before the ASA Classic.

The Pro Pressure Point Shootdown was held just off of the Tournament Village in the fenced in area.

The ASA staff set the following targets for the shoot­ down...the McKenzie Blesbok, Javelina, Large Alert Deer, Strutting Turkey and Russian Boar, with the Hill Country Deer set aside for 6,h & final arrows, etc.

Levi Morgan leads the Open Pro competitors by six points...a little bit of breathing room, but not enough to totally relax. Danny Evans starts out with a 14, attempting to catch Levi, while Jack Wallace picks up a 14 and a couple of 12s to ensure a spot in the 6'h and final arrow. After a 6"’ & “not-so-final” arrow, Jack and Levi are tied at 492. So, now to a 7th & final arrow, Jack shoots first and scores a 10. Levi must shoot at 12 to win or a 10 to tie and continue to another arrow. He steps up, takes aim at the McKen­ zie Strutting Turkey, shoots and takes a 12!

Wow...we’ve got some new faces in our Known Pro shootdown this weekend. Glen Bord­ well, Kyle Douglas and Joshua Bassett are making their shootdown debut here at the Metropolis Pro/ Am, each of them starting out in 2nd, 3rd and 5lh places, respectively. Not letting the pressure of a shootdown get to them, Glen starts out with a 12 and Joshua takes a 14 on their first targets. The battle continues with several 14s scored by the competitors throughout the remaining targets. Three shooters tied after the 6th & final arrow forces a 7th & final arrow for Chris, Glen and Justin. Justin clearly secured 3rd place with a score of 522 and 26 bonus rings...leaving the top spot for Chris and Glen to fight over. Back and forth, still tied after eight arrows, finally after a 9th shootdown arrow, Glen outscores Chris with a 12 on a 36-yard Javelina. Great show, gentlemen! And congratula­ tions to Glen Bordwell on his 1st pro win!!!

Judges

by Rick McKinney, President of Carbon Tech Arrows and U.S. Representative for Win & Win Archery udges are very import­ ant for our sport in or­ der to make sure there is fairness and equal levels of competition worldwide. When an archer sets a record, it must be proven that all rules were followed. Unfortunate­ ly, some judges are not up to the standards that should be allowed to be a judge. Often times, judges are ignored unless there is an issue.

As most people who enjoy watch­ ing a game of any sport, the judges try to be as invisible as possible so that the competition is enjoyed by not only the competitors but by the spectators as well.

There are three types of judges 1 have experienced during my competitive years and years of enjoying the camaraderie of shoot­ ing. Competing for over 50 years in local, state, regional, national, and international competitions from the lowest level to the high­ est level, I have found some judges to be of excellent professionalism, some over exuberant and the worst are those who love the power and make their own decisions.

The first type of judge: Pro­ fessionalism. These judges real­ ly do care about making sure the rules are enforced but use com­ mon sense to make sure that the rule is not broken to the extent of an advantage for the rule breaker.

These judges are the pride ofjudg­ ing. They help archers, if possible, behind the scenes to encourage young archers to learn the rules.

They make sure the top archers do not abuse the rules for advantage.

They just do their job so well that most archers forget that these judg­ es were even on the field. Unfor­ tunately, they do not get thanked enough. Most of these judges do it for the love of archery. There is very little pay for these judges (if any) and often times they are lucky enough to break even on the cost of being a judge. Most judges spend much more than they get in financial return, which leads most 20

of us to believe they love judging and helping out.

The second type of judge: Overenthusiastic. These judges try to do a good job but in their enthusiasm they want to show how knowledgeable they are.

When this happens, nobody is safe! There are lots of little in­ fractions that occur throughout the archery competition. These little infractions do nothing that would give an archer an edge or advan­ tage. However, the overenthusi­ astic judge spots an infraction and immediately calls the archer on it. This causes unfounded grief and stress for the archer and also causes other archers to question why is the judge picking on an archer? It does nobody any good when a judge is overenthusiastic.

Although the judge’s intentions are well meaning, it accomplishes nothing except more friction be­ tween judges and archers. These judges can eventually become Professional or the third type.

Rick has experienced three types ofjudges. How do they affect the shooter?

The third type of judge: Power Hungry.

These judges should be banned from archery all together. They do nothing for our sport except to cause grief for fellow judges, anger from tourna­ ment organizers and full out con­ tempt from archery competitors.

These judges think they are very knowledgeable and yet are least knowledgeable. They come up with some rules that make some archers laugh at them at first un­ til they realize that the judge is being serious and then the archer will usually get angry with the judge. This causes two things to happen. It hurts the archer’s per­ formance for no reason at all and it brings more contempt about the

Rick judge (and other judges). What the judge does not realize that each time they do something stu­ pid, like make a new rule up, they loose credibility. The archers start sharing their experiences with other archers about how bad the judge is. The judge’s reputation can get damaged and that damage can last as long as they are a judge (which 1 hope is not long). This also affects other judges because archers start thinking that all judg­ es are the same! This is just like judges thinking that all archers are the same and take their anger and frustration out of any archer in shouting range.

Here are some experiences 1 have either had to deal with or some of my fellow competitors have dealt with. One judge argued with an archer that they could make any rule they want to during the competition. This judge should be banned from judging. There is no­ where in any rulebook that gives such an allowance. Many judges get angry about making sure the archer goes through equipment in­ spection. This is where it really shows the judge who loves pow­ er. They really get upset if you do not get inspected. Nowhere in the rules does it say you have to and if you have to what are the repercus­ sions? Nowhere in the rulebook does it show any repercussions.

And the final question on this subject is if a judge overlooks an infraction on equipment during in­ spection, then whose fault is it that the archer is breaking an equip­ ment rule? All judges will say it is the responsibility of the archer U.S. Archer Inc. 35th Anniversary

to be in compliance, so it is the ar­ chers’. So why inspect at all? I have argued with many top judges over the years about the hypocrisy of this ruling. They want the pow­ er to inspect but if they overlook something, it’s too bad for you as an archer not them! No repercus­ sions for the judge at all. Now, do I think archers should be inspected?

The inspection should be a cour­ tesy and it is mainly for the new archers who are not familiar with the rules. It irritates me that top archers who have been inspected 1000’s of times and realistical­ ly know the rules far better than most judges have to waste time to be inspected by a judge. The ending comment on this is that a judge will never be as particular as a competitor. Usually all competi­ tors are very observant of their fel­ low archers. They know the rules and they would never allow anoth­ er archer to break a rule if it gives the archer an advantage. Usually what happens is if an archer sees an archer breaking an equipment rule or any rule for that matter, they may ask a simple question to the person who broke the rule or is breaking the rule. If they are not satisfied with the explanation and it continues, then the archer complains to their coach or man­ ager. The coach or manager will go to a judge and complain about the issue. This brings the judge into the issue and usually the in­ fraction gets resolved. Simple and yet most judges still want to make sure all archers go through equipment inspection. I get that equipment inspection is good for many archers, but when an archer becomes highly competitive and competes at the Olympics, World Championships or even the World Cups, it becomes very question­ able as to why the archer needs to be inspected each and every time.

Years ago, there was a rule that the archer could only have a maximum of 4 stabilizers on their bow. This was when the V-bar was just introduced into the re­ curve world by Yamaha Archery.

Most archers used the V-bar (two

side rods), the long stabilizer and an upper rod. I was one of the first archers to use an extension and showed up at the World Team trials with the extension. Since it was never seen before, the judge (George Helwig) said that 1 had 5 stabilizers. 1 disagreed with him and he said that his rules stood, so I had to take the top rod off since I loved the extension and what it did to the bow reaction. I made the US World Team and when I got to the World Championships in Australia the US Team went through equip­ ment inspection. George Helwig was the judge to do the inspecting with the other judges observing. I decided to add the stabilizer to see if it would pass at the World Cham­ pionships. I give credit to George who almost choked when he saw what I did! He went over the count of stabilizers and God Bless him; he counted the extender and long rod as one. The judges agreed and allowed the extension to be just that, an extension of the long sta­ bilizer. Since I had trained without the top stabilizer, I took it off for competition and won without it, but when I returned home I added the fourth stabilizer.

I lost one World Field Cham­ pionship due to a judge messing with my equipment. He actually broke my arrow rest without any­ one knowing it during equipment inspection. I watched him put pressure on the rest and tried to stop him but unknown to me or anyone else the damage was done.

I missed 4 arrows off the target due to this. The problem was that the rest dropped !4” when I loaded the arrow on the rest and it came back up to the right position when I would check it. It was a very frustrating time and I lost my trust on all judges after that issue. If you recall, one archer lost S25.000 due to a judge making a horrible call. Yes, the judge lost their posi­ tion but nobody offered to give the archer their lost S25,000!

In California, a few years ago, some of the kids were mark­ ing their arrow holes with a big black felt pen. This left the target U.S. Archer Inc. 35th Anniversary

judge came up to the archer who was doing the counting and got into his face and told him he could not do it! The archer said, “show me in the rule book where it says 1 cannot do this.” The judge did not show him nor did he do any­ thing else except to tell him that he could not do it!

Another time a California judge wanted to punish an archer who was looking through their scope after they shot their last ar­ row. They wanted to take away their highest arrow shot during that end. A huge argument ensued. It was fun to watch but not so much fun for the archer involved. This has been an ongoing controversy for years. The rule is that once you shoot your last arrow, you are to immediately walk off the line.

Originally, years ago, many of the USA archers argued with judges that we would leave if the archer next to them, was not at full draw so that it would not disrupt their focus. We told them it was called sportsmanship. They allowed it.

But the archer spotting their arrow after the last arrow was shot has been a particular bug for the judg­ es. Most use common sense and allow it if there are other archers still shooting while some judges, who are either overenthusiastic or enjoy the power, call archers on it.

The final straw was when a judge wants to berate the archer for not agreeing with them. This is so unprofessional and should be dealt with severely. Never!

Should a judge berate an athlete?

According to SafeSport, it is a sign of power over the athlete and an abuse that should not be tolerat­ ed. Anytime a judge berates you, call them on it and file a complaint to either the Safesport organiza­ tion or directly to USA Archery.

No judge should be allowed to harass an archer. Their job is to make sure the archer follows the rules and if the rule is broken, they should be able to show them in the rulebook what rule they broke and what the consequences are. There should NEVER BE EMOTION

in horrible condition and the judg­ es decided that something needed to be done, so they passed a ruling that the mark on the target had to be a specific mark, using a specific colored pen and the length of the mark could only be so long and so wide. I laughed about this because 1 could not imagine anything so stupid as to requiring the specific mark on the target. All the judge really had to do is show the ruling of undue damage to the target and then disqualify the archer or target of archers in question. I guarantee you the issue would have been re­ solved. However, they wanted to punish all archers. Although the rule was not followed to the letter, it could have been, especially by an overenthusiastic judge!

Just this last California State Championship, 1 talked with an archer who was counting down the final few seconds on the clock for an archer who was at full draw.

This has been quite common and shows the sportsmanship of fel­ low archers, helping each other. A

from a judge! If so, they should be immediately warned of their own infraction and if it happens again, they should be stripped of their position and never be allowed on the archery field again.

At a World Field Champi­ onships in Austria one year, a fog rolled in and you could not see no more than 10 feet in front of you!

All archers stopped shooting until the fog lifted. At one point the fog was scattered and on one target the judge could see a white bull’s-eye.

He told the archers to start shoot­ ing. One seasoned archer who just happened to be a World Field Champion argued with the judge and told him that he was not sure if it was the target or not since he could only see the white bulls eye.

The judge told him to shoot or he will have to take away arrows from him. Just at that moment the fog lifted and it was a tree with a white spot on it!

It is really hard for an archer to work their way up the ranks of become a top shooter. The judge should be there to observe and en­ force any rule infractions. They are not to show emotion nor dis­ play any power issues whatsoever!

1 could go on and on about how judges have caused a negative ef­ fect on an archer’s outcome, but I hope you get the point. Although judges might think they are need­ ed in order to run a tournament, I have seen where archers became their own judges because they did not trust a judge and the tourna­ ment went on without the use of the judge. Never have a seen a tournament without an archer!

The tournament requires all sorts of support and volunteers. Judges are there to do a specific job and hopefully they will take the job seriously enough not to let their emotions get involved. Overall, I would say that most judges are either Professional or Overenthusiastic. Unfortunately, those judg­ es who crave power are hurting the reputation of all judges. Let’s hope archery can weed out those power hungry judges.

Earlier in my career, while shooting a state indoor championship, I let my bow down five or six times. The pin just would not settle in on the “dot.” With a minute left on the clock, 1 was the last person on the line when I shot.

The arrow hit its mark and the line judge blew the whistle.

“Hold it!” I’m not done!”

1 exclaimed. The next shot went much easier and the arrow slammed into the center with 30 seconds remaining. The whistle sounded again.

“Hold it! I still have one left,” I said.

By now, everyone was watching, and the place became very quiet. 1 kept telling myself, “Concentrate and shoot good form.” I then executed another sound shot.

When we went to pull arrows another archer inquired, “How can you concentrate after all of those interruptions?”

My reply was, “1 concentrate really hard because the shot is very important to me. If someone offers you a thousand dollars to thread a needle on the very first try, how hard would you concentrate?”

“Really hard,” he replied.

This type of mental approach is what you should be using on each shot in a tournament. You have to stay focused on the task that is in front of you. Concentrate and make the best shot that you are capable of producing. Develop the attitude, “I will thread the needle.”

Archery is a sport of concentration and steady nerves.

Focused mental thinking will help eliminate or reduce tournament anxiety. Top archers are not bom with this gift; they develop and fine-tune it over the years.

Because concentration is learned on the practice field and refined and mastered on the tournament field, it is important to participate in as many competitions as possible. Once each shoot is over, work to analyze and evaluate your performance. If you got nervous or lost your concentration, try to identify the reason so it can be corrected. Make every tournament a learning experience in that, whether you win or lose, you can look for ways to improve.

While you develop these abilities on the practice field, do not expect to walk onto the tournament field and just have them. Tiy to hone these skills by shooting every practice shot with the same degree of intensity as you would if you were competing in a national championship. Each individual practice shot should be treated as the most important shot you are going to execute that day. If you are at full draw and the pin will not “steady up” or if you have negative thoughts and are not staying focused, do not release the arrow. Stop! Keep your focal point on your shooting process and then re-address the target.

When practicing alone, it helps give the experience meaning.

Try testing different pieces of equipment such as arrows, rests, stabilizers, etc. You will be forced to concentrate as you attempt to get more valid testing results.

Do not hesitate to also make minor changes with your present equipment. Then, while you re­ sight the bow, limit yourself to three shots at each distance, which increases your mental focus.

As you practice with bullseye targets, keep score to measure your performance and enhance

concentration. Most archers put far too much emphasis on their points during a tournament and ignore them during practice.

Instead, raise the importance of each arrow shot during drill and lower the value of each arrow in a tournament. With effort, the gap between the two should narrow.

Before you can master holding your focus when shooting before a crowd, you have to develop it while practicing at home.

Once concentration is learned under calm, ideal conditions, start adding a few distractions to your practice routine. Attach a piece of paper to a stick and allow it to blow back and forth around the bullseye.

Train during a strong, gusty wind or light rain. Try placing a radio beside you and tune it to a talk show. Better yet, invite that friend that “won’t quit talking” over to practice with you. When you are handling these distractions well. join some friends to shoot targets for score. Make your own rules that create distractions, such as talking and harassing the opponent, as long as you do not touch the person or create a dangerous situation. Shoot ten shots with each game while keeping score.

Wagering is optional, but is a good way to add more pressure. It is a fun competition that will truly test your concentration.

Participate in as many tournaments as you are able without getting burned out. Attend different kinds of events, such as 3-D, field, and indoor target.

Each will help as you develop into a well-rounded, accomplished archer.

The Compound Bow Makes a Come-Back: USA Flight Archery 2018

If you looked at the photographs from the US Flight Archery Competition over the past fifteen years or so, you might think the tournament was a traditional bows only event. You would see lots of recurved bows of both the target and field variety, English longbows, modem American longbows, wooden bows, sinewbacked bows, bamboo composites, Asiatic-style bows with fiberglass facings as well the real deal, the hom-wood-sinew composites. With all these different types of bows, it would look like a virtual catalogue of high-performing bows straight out of the worldwide history of archery. And with that, you might conclude that flight archery was only for traditionalists. Why?

Compound bows almost never appear in any of these photographs.

So it might seem that compound bows did not-or do not-have a place on the flight archery range. The record books, however, tell a different story.

Fine, outstanding, and incredible distances have been set by compound bows in flight archery competitions sanctioned by USA Archery and by World Archery. In 1992 Kevin Strother shot an arrow over 1320 yards with a compound bow having a draw weight of some 180 pounds. For sure, not many archers may be able to control a bow of that weight, but other competitors using 60-pound and 45-pound target compound bows

have achieved distances of 700, 800, and even over 900 yards.

In other words, compound bows have been part of the competition on flight ranges ever since they first came on the market in the late 1960s. Magazine articles from the 1960s describe how Tom Jennings flew in, landing his own Piper Cherokee on the dry lake bed at Ivanpah, California, to shoot flight with the then newly introduced compound.

Why then, is there so little mention of compound bows in flight? Again, the record books explain. In the US, flight archers were using compound bows to set distance records from the 1970s through the late 1990s. By the early 2000s, interest had shifted

elsewhere, to the American longbow, to certain types of recurves, and to the primitive

divisions, and eventually to the modern Asiatic. It was not that compound bows were not welcomed. Rather, in the US competitors preferred other bows.

In the UK, the flight scene was somewhat different. Archers using compound bows continued to compete. All the compound bow distance records of the previous decade were set in the UK. Thus, over the past while, a compound bow was almost never seen at the US flight competitions.

by Martin Archery once some years back out of interest in its performance-he was bow designer in the company’s traditional division. Otherwise, compound bow archers were few and far between on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, the site of the annual flight competitions in America.

Then something happened.

Tony Bakes, flight archer from the UK, came to the 2017 US competition with a 45 pound target compound. Though most of his arrows were lost, buried deep beneath the soft surface thanks to the conditions of the Salt Flats that year, his best shot-the one the Flight Committee could locate and officially measure-was but a tad short of the standing world record. That result left everyone wondering about the arrows that could not be found. Whether or not it was Tony’s luck or fortitude, or something entirely different. whatever it was, something was prompted, so much so that this year’s (2018) US Flight Archery' Tournament saw more compound bows in competition than it had for many a year. Tony Bakes was back, along with Mike Willrich, a fellow flight archer and record holder from the UK. Both shot rounds with compound bows.

Likewise, the hotshot Hungarian archers, Jozsef Monus, his wife Anna Monusne Ruszin, son Laszlo and Kiara Prokaj, all regular attendees of the US competition, came with compound bows ready to prove their mettle.

made a come-back, and with that, several new distance records were set. Both Jozsef and his wife Anna bettered previous distance records each in the 60 pound compound target bow class. In the 45 pound class Laszlo and Kiara did very well. Their best distances all set new records. And, as everyone knows, records are made to be broken. Future competitors take note!

While the Europeans were hashing it out with their compound bows, the US competitors were back at it with their field bows, American longbows, and whatnot.

They also were setting new distance records. James Martin outshot Jozsef Monus’s previous record in the Unlimited Modern American Longbow class. Jaap and Kay Koppedrayer both bettered their previous record distances in the Japanese bow division. Jordan Case did the same in the 35 pound Modem Asiatic class. Arvin Weaver set a benchmark distance in the 70 pound Primitive Selfbow class, as did Janice Willrich in the 70 pound Field bow class. Jordan Case tried her hand (or rather her feet) shooting an Unlimited Footbow, to establish the benchmark distanceover 1158 yards-in that division for women.

In the Juniordivision, several young archers did well. A new competitor, Landyn Maguglin, set two new records in the 35 pound and 50 pound Fieldbow class, plus a benchmark distance with a 70 pound Fieldbow. His sister, Syndilyn Maguglin, also new to flight, established the benchmark distance in the 50 pound Fieldbow class. Braylen Pawluk established benchmark distances in two classes, the 70 pound Modem Asiatic and the 50 pound Primitive Selfbow divisions.

It seemed competitors were on a roll. In the Broadhead competition long-standing records were demolished with better and better distances achieved. Mike Willrich set two new records. In the 50 pound he bettered his own

previous record, and then in the 70 pound class, he beat one of Don Brown’s legendary distances. In the Unlimited Modern American Longbow class, James Martin broke another of Jozsef Monus’s records. He and Jozsef will likely continue as friendly competitors in the years to come. Arvin Weaver broke Steve Gardner’s record in the 50 pound Primitive Seflbow class, making sure Steve comes back to compete in 2019.

In the Junior Division, Braylen Pawluk established the benchmark distance in the 50 pound Primitive Selfbow class. Landyn Maguglin bettered Braylen’s previous record in the 50 pound Fieldbow class, while Syndilyn Maguglin bettered Joslin Lorimor’s distance in the 50 pound class.

Following dinner the program began with the Induction of the Class of 2016. After a brief intermission two special awards were given by CEO Diane Miller and President, Rick McKinney to recognize George and Betty Gardner and archery legend, Ann Clark.

George and Betty Gardner were recognized for their 10 year pledge of $100,000. Tony, Tammy and Kathy Gardner Bellars were on hand to accept the award.

Ann Clark was honored for over 35 years of support and dedica­ tion to the AHOF. Debbie Ohl accepted the award in memory of her Mother.

Scholastic Archery National Shooter of the Year 2018 By: Amanda Long and Kayla Bolton The Outdoor Target Nationals were held at the WR.AL Soccer Complex in Raleigh, NC on July 10Ih, 2018 which marked the end of the 2018 Scholastic Archery season. Twenty-two (22) Scholastic Archers earned the title of 2018 National Shooter of the Year for their class and division of competition. To be eligible to win the National Shooter of the Year title, archers had to have competed with other archers from across the United States in three disciplines at three different venues. The three disciplines included: Indoor 5-Spot, Outdoor 3-D and Outdoor Target. At the end of the season we interviewed these twenty-two national title holders to find out a little more about them and their archery journey. This is what they had to say: Archer: Kya Hamman

A: 1 started archery because a friend was doing it. Last October, 1 started shooting recurve in the S3 DA program.

Q: Why do you enjoy archery?

A: I enjoy meeting new people and the friendships I make.

S3 DA has been very good for me, as 1 have received several scholarship offers through this program.

Q: Which discipline do you like best and why? (Indoor, 3-D, Outdoor Target) A: 1 started to progress in my shooting in the Indoor discipline.

A: I have been involved with archery for five years. I shoot out of Steve’s Pro Shop in Laotto, Indiana.

Q: What got you involved in archery?

A: I got involved when my brother decided he wanted to join the NASP team for my school.

1 had to stay after school for his practice one day and my coach got me to try it because I did not have anything better to do. I found out that 1 shot decently compared to other members of the team and they had already been shooting for weeks, whereas I just started that day. I decided that I would at least see how things turned out if I stuck with it. I practiced and got better while competing at different tournaments and competitions and I wanted something more fulfilling than the NASP program. Shortly after that, I started shooting S3DA and beyond and have continued shooting since.

Q: Why do you enjoy archery?

A: The biggest reason I like archery is it is something I can do to relax because I just get into a groove and do my thing and the rest takes care of itself.

Q: Which discipline do you like best and why? (Indoor, 3-D, Outdoor Target) A: My favorite discipline of archeiy is 3-D because each shot is a brand-new situation which keeps things fresh, interesting and challenging.

A: I have been involved in archery for six years.

Q: What got you involved in archery?

A: 1 started shooting archery with my local 4-H club using an Olympic Recurve bow. 1 loved it so much that I began taking archery lessons with a local coach and entered tournaments with other organizations such as USA Archery and Georgia Bowhunter and Archery Association (GB AA).

Q: Are you a bow hunter?

If so, have you had success?

A: 1 have my hunting license and I have gone out a few times with my coach, but 1 have not had any luck.

Q: Why do you enjoy archery?

A: I enjoy shooting archery because I am a competitive person and archery fills a hunger in me that

I was not getting in competitive swimming. Archery gives me the opportunity to be different in a unique sport. Most high school athletes play traditional sports, but 1 am not very coordinated and cannot play basketball, softball or soccer, so I shoot archery.

Q: Which discipline do you like best and why? (Indoor, 3-D, Outdoor Target) A: I have shot a lot of disciplines from Indoor, Outdoor Target and 3-D. 3-D is my favorite discipline to shoot. I find 3-D to be exciting because the terrain can be difficult to maneuver, and every shot is something new and at a different location in the woods.

Q: What is your favorite memorable moment in your archery career?

A: My most memorable moment was this year at S3DA Outdoor Nationals in North Carolina. When I returned home from 3-D Nationals, the team started working on our Outdoor Target distances and I was struggling. I switched my bow equipment trying different stabilizers, sights, arrows, limbs and even changed my riser to find the most comfortable shot.

In practice, 1 was shooting three feet to the right of the target and I was frustrated. Once I picked the right combination of equipment, my coach moved my plunger and tuned my bow, but I was still hitting to the right. I was very frustrated with myself and my shot. The morning of the tournament, my mom called and told me to stay calm, have fun and shoot my shot.

I knew I was hitting to the right, so during the practice rounds, 1 found my spot on the left of the target that had my arrows hitting the center. I surprised myself and shot a great round considering the struggles I was having through the previous weeks.

A: I have been involved in archery now since the 7lh grade, so about 7 years. 1 started out shooting 4-H and eventually moved to JOAD, ASA and S3DA. This was my 3rd year with S3DA and my most successful.

Q: What got you involved in archery?

A: I got involved in archery as a way to help cope with my ADD/ADHD and by the way it really helped me with school. 1 began shooting a compound bow, pins set-up, and eventually moved on to an open set-up for several years. This year 1 took on a new challenge with Olympic Recurve.

Q: Are you a bow hunter?

A: Archery has given me an opportunity to go to college that may not have been there otherwise.

Now, with the scholarships 1 received through S3DA, I will be shooting for the University of Pikeville.

Q: Which discipline do you like best and why? (Indoor, 3-D, Outdoor Target) A: Of the different formats, I enjoy 3-D the most. It seems to be a lot less stressful out on the range because everyone acts more like friends than when you are standing on a line shooting.

A: I have had a bow in my hand since I was five years old, but I have actually been shooting competitions since 1 was eight years old.

Q: What got you involved in archery?

A: Both of my parents are bowhunters and enjoyed shooting 42

a bow for fun, so of course 1 wanted to shoot a bow too. From the first time I ever shot a bow, I fell in love with it. However, it was nothing compared to how much 1 fell in love with the competitions themselves.

Q: Are you a bow hunter?

If so, have you had success?

A: In the past two years, I have started bowhunting. I had my first bow kill last year. Bowhunting has been a fun outlet to continue shooting and being outdoors when I am not competing.

Q: Why do you enjoy archery?

A: There really isn’t anything better than the family­ like atmosphere of the archery world. If it wasn’t for archery, I never would have had the amazing opportunity to meet the many people who I know will be lifelong friends.

Q: Which discipline do you like best and why? (Indoor, 3-D, Outdoor Target) A: Since I began archery, 3-D has always been my passion.

A: 7 years ago, on my eighth birthday, my dad and I took a trip to Culpepper Outdoors to get my first bow. I saw a bow I really liked. It was a Mathews Mission Craze with a camouflage riser and black limbs. That is where it all began! After that day, 1 shot my bow in my backyard weekly.

Q: What got you involved in archery?

A: After years of that, I met my coach Jake Martin and he convinced me to sign up for the new S3 DA team and I took his advice.

Q: Are you a bow hunter?

If so, have you had success?

A: I bow hunted last year but only made it out to the stand 3 or 4 times and never saw anything.

I really look forward this season!

Q: Why do you enjoy archery?

A: I enjoy archery mostly because it can be either a team or independent sport. Sometimes, I just want to relax and have a nice round of 3-D alone. Other times, going out in a group with my friends can be what I want. That is why it is such a great sport.

Q: Which discipline do you like best and why? (Indoor, 3-D, Outdoor Target) A: My favorite discipline in archery is Outdoor Target.

Personally, I like shooting very heavy target arrows and watching the arrow sail over a soccer field and di ve into the foam targets. Also, you have minimum variables. The only thing in Outdoor Target that is a variable is the wind, which makes it my number one pick.

Aiming off and watching arrows drop in at 50 meters is where my heart is in archery.

A: 1 have been in S3DA for 3 years, going on four now. I had shot NASP beforehand, but I didn’t start to succeed until 1 had joined the Boyd County High School 3D Archery team.

Q: What got you involved in archery?

A: The summer of my seventh-grade year, a boy on the team had talked me into getting a bow and shooting. At the time, our middle school did not have a 3D team, so I did not shoot for a team or compete. The next outdoor season rolled around, and I got my current bow, had it for a week, and won my first archery tournament.

Q: Are you a bow hunter?

If so, have you had success?

A: I do not hunt.

Q: Why do you enjoy archery?

A: I have won National Shooter of the Year once and State Shooter of the Year twice.

One in each discipline, in a high school pins class. In the upcoming season, I am hoping for a good challenge in the open class.

Archery is exciting because there is always something new to learn and different challenges that come with each season.

Q: Which discipline do you like best and why? (Indoor, 3-D, Outdoor Target) A: Out of the three disciplines that S3DA offers, I prefer Indoor. Most people do not enjoy Indoor because it is all a mind game, but that is where I thrive. I prefer Indoor simply because it is what I am better at.

My highest score with my pins set-up in a tournament is 150 with 26 X’s and in practice my score to beat is a 150 with 27 X’s.

A: I have been in archery for about 7 years. I have only shot competitively for two years, now going on my third.

Q: What got you involved in archery?

A: I started shooting archery when I was younger because 1 come from a hunting

family and I got to watch my dad shoot a lot. I had played other sports my whole life but when I first started watching my dad shoot at a young age it was something new. Instantly, I wanted to try it because I wanted to be like him and I wanted to be able to bow hunt like him. So, I got my start with a mission craze bow. I would go to school and baseball practice and then I would come home and shoot my bow relentlessly. 1 fell in love with it. Going into my freshman year of High school a local club got started and that’s what got me into competitive archery.

Q: Are you a bow hunter?

If so, have you had success?

A: Yes... As I started to grow more and get stronger, I started trying to bow hunt. I was unsuccessful for my first few years but then I got a new bow and as a I got stronger and older I started to have more success.

Q: Do you have a favorite Hunting Story?

A: My favorite archery hunting story is probably the time that 1 lost my release going hunting with a friend, so I had to use his release to kill a doe that morning.

Q: Why do you enjoy archery?

A: The thing I enjoy most about archery is how everybody knows everybody, and it is such a good crowd to be around.

Q: Which discipline do you like best and why? (Indoor, 3-D, Outdoor Target) A: My favorite discipline is 3-D archery because I enjoy being outdoors more than being inside and because you can socialize more and shoot different targets and different distances.

A: Right now, I do not hunt. 1 need to take the Hunter Education Course, then I would like to try bowhunting.

Q: Why do you enjoj' archery?

A: The best thing about archery is meeting new people.

This year I met what is now one of my best friends.

Q: Which discipline do you like best and why? (Indoor, 3-D, Outdoor Target) A: 1 think my favorite is Outdoor Target. The challenge of shooting the longer distance is what makes it the most fun. The competition is great at S3DA events.

Q: What got you involved in archery?

A: I got started with my local NASP program and I started shooting S3DA a little bit over a year ago. I was one of the main reasons my brother got started in archery, but he was one of the main reasons that I got started in S3 DA. 1 really wanted to start shooting S3 DA after my brother shot and won at his first 3-D nationals.

Q: Why do you enjoy archery?

A: I enjoy archery because it gives me lots of satisfaction when I make progress or improve on something. I also enjoy archery a lot because it gives me something where I can compete with my brother and sister while having fun. I have a lot of fun traveling and seeing all sorts of cool places that I might never get to see if it

wasn’t for archery.

In 3-D, each target is different, there are changes in distances and each target has their own lighting conditions which makes it more challenging.

Q: What is your favorite memorable moment in your archery career?

A: One of my favorite memories during shooting was at the most recent ASA shoot in Metropolis, IL. We were all shooting in mud puddles which came up halfway on our boots and everyone in our group had several close calls to almost slipping in the mud.

in archery?

A: I was in 2nd grade and one day after basketball practice, I decided to go home and watch videos of the USA basketball team playing in the Olympics. It had more videos of other Olympic sports in the recommended and the archery one caught my eye. It was almost like God placed it there just for me to see it. I thought to myself, “It would be hard to get on the USA basketball team, but archery looks way easier.’’ It did not take long for me to realize that I was wrong. My brother had gotten a bow as a birthday present a few years earlier so 1 thought I could use that get in some practice. A couple days later 1 found out that our school had begun an archery team and as soon as 1 was told, 1 broke out my brothers bow and started practicing. 1 was upset that I wouldn’t be able to be a part of the team until 3rd grade, but I knew that meant I had more time to improve. Eventually I got bored with archery and completely forgot about it. When time for tryouts rolled around, 1 got back into it. In that gym, everything was different from what I was used to doing at home. Different bows, different distances, and different targets. The coach pulled the new kids that were trying out aside and explained to us everything we needed to know.

I had to use one of my friend’s bows because he was the closest to my size and strength. The coach blew the whistle for us to get on the line and 1 began to panic. I couldn’t even hit my own target, I was shooting reds and yellows on the target next to me! Somehow, 1 made the team and was able to go to state and nationals with my team. 1 couldn’t pull out a win until the region tournament when 1 was in 4th grade. Things just improved from there. By the end of my 5th grade year, I had already become a world champion. At worlds, I won 2 compound bows and that’s what led me to S3DA and ASA. Q: Are you a bow hunter?

If so, have you had success?

A: 1 was already into hunting before I got into archery, but 1 was really wanting to try bow hunting as well.

Q: Why do you enjoy archery?

A: I probably enjoy archery more than anybody that I know. 1 have made so many best friends through it and 1 do not know what 1 would do without them. Archery also always gives me something to do and I’m the kind of person that can’t stand spending a whole day doing nothing.

Q: Which discipline do you like best and why? (Indoor, 3-D, Outdoor Target) A: Outdoor Target is my absolute favorite. Being honest, it makes me feel like I'm just like Chris Bee. 1 have always wanted to be a part of the USA Archery team and since they shoot the same thing, it just makes me feel cooler I guess.

Q: What is your favorite memorable moment in your archery career?

A: My favorite archery story is when I first met Levi Morgan. It was at the London ASA in 2017.

I had been looking everywhere for him pretty much all weekend.

When I was just about to give up, 1 peeped around the comer at the BowLife booth just in case he might be there. Sure enough, 1 saw him standing there and 1 started to lose it. 1 was tearing up, shaking and everything. I had been watching him for years and I finally got to see him in person.

Just before 1 found him, I had received my 2nd place plaque. He told me good job and I thought that I was the best person in the world. rw.

A: I have been participating in archery for 3 years.

Q: What got you involved in archery?

A: I got involved in archery by my dad. On my birthday, my dad bought me a Hoyt Ruckus because he always bowhunted and he wanted me to get into bowhunting as well. So, 1 got to finally shoot my first bow and I loved it. Which then, 1 finally joined the nearest archery team which was the Wabash Bowhunters and then I started to improve. Now, just about a year and a half ago the Edwards County archery team started up and 1 joined it and went to more shoots and Pro/Am’s. Now I am going to about every Illinois shoot and Pro/Am. Q: Are you a bow hunter?

If so, have you had success?

A: Yes... The last two years I have had success bow hunting for deer.

Q: Do you have a favorite Hunting Story?

A: Yes, one time I was in my deer stand on my first Bowhunt with my Ruckus and there was a doe. From the stand it looked huge, so I shot at it nervously at 20 yards out and my bottom cam hit the gun rail on the stand, so I hit under the deer. Then 1 shot again, and I hit it! When I got down and looked at it, it was so small that I could pick it up with just one hand, but I was still happy because that day that I shot that deer was on my birthday.

Q: Why do you enjoy archery?

A: Archery is fun, and 1 get to see lots of people and meet new and old friends when 1 go to shoots.

Q: Which discipline do you like best and why? (Indoor, 3-D, Outdoor Target) A: I like 3-D because you get to move through the woods and shoot at different yardages at different targets, which on the other hand, in indoor and outdoor target, you only shoot at one yardage in the same spot.

A: My family has always been involved in hunting but in 2015 we discovered ASA, which led us to learn about S3DA. In 2016, my family started our club. Team ACUSA Alabama in New Brockton, Alabama and we practice several days a week.

A: 1 love hunting with my dad, but 1 don’t really bow hunt yet. Maybe one day but for now. I just enjoy sitting in the stand with

Q: Why do you enjoy archery?

A: 1 love the challenge of not shooting the same distance at every target and the friends that I make on the range. To me, archery means time for me to be with friends and family and no matter what kind of day I am having, shooting makes me happy. 1 think being happy is the most important thing in life and we should all do more of what makes us happy!

Q: Which discipline do you like best and why? (Indoor, 3-D, Outdoor Target) A: At first, I just started out shooting 3-D but in 2017 I went to NFAA Nationals with my family and I fell in love with the Olympic Recurve and bought my Hoyt Excel. Since then, I have learned to shoot Indoor and FITA, but my favorite will always be 3-D. g: Archer: Cael Griffith

Q: Are you a bow hunter?

If so, have you had success?

A: I love to use my bow, but 1 haven’t been hunting with it yet this season. I plan to try to harvest my first deer with a bow this fall.

1 needed to wait to hunt with a bow when 1 could pull enough poundage to be an ethical hunter.

1 have killed a bear, all four U.S species of turkey, a wild angora goat and red stag in New Zealand, white tail deer and hogs.

Q: Why do you enjoy archery?

A: I love competition and winning.

Q: Which discipline do you like best and why? (Indoor, 3-D, Outdoor Target) A: 1 like to shoot the 3-D courses the best. It gives me the chance to feel like I am in the woods hunting.

A: My dad got me started with a genesis bow and 1 shot in 1 NASP tournament. Then, I moved on to my first compound bow and shot in an S3 DA 3-D shoot and was hooked.

Q: Are you a bow hunter?

If so, have you had success?

A: No not yet, but 1 look forward to hunting with my bow.

Now, 1 just don’t pull enough poundage to take an animal ethically. I have rifle hunted for the last two years for deer and turkey.

Q: Why do you enjoy archery?

A: 1 enjoy being competitive and getting to compete against other shooters, shooting my bow with my dad and practicing with him, spending time with my teammates, by having fun at practice and tournaments and traveling to different places to shoot. Also, I play softball and basketball which are team sports, but I like archery because it allows me to compete individually and to challenge myself to improve.

Q: Which discipline do you like best and why? (Indoor, 3-D, Outdoor Target) A: My favorite is 3-D, because I enjoy being outside, in the woods, where I get to act like I am shooting animals. I like that it gives me the idea of being out in the woods hunting at all the different animals. 3-D seems to be slower paced as we move from target to target. Q: What is your favorite memorable moment in your archery career?

A: My favorite archery story is when my mom promised me a pet skunk if I won the S3 DA 3-D Nationals in Metropolis, Illinois because she really thought I would not win. 1 came home with my first-place trophy, only for my family to realize it is illegal to keep a skunk as a pet in the state of North Carolina. I had to settle for a rabbit instead, because a promise is a promise.

A: I like to bow hunt, but I have not had much success. My dad and 1 are planning our hunting trips to land my first turkey or deer.

1 love spending time in the woods and 1 am very excited to see what this next season will bring.

A: I do notjust enjoy archery, but I love it! I love how archery makes me challenge myself each practice and tournament. I want to become a better archer. Archery' has given me the opportunity travel to many different places.

1 have not only traveled all over the state of Illinois, but I have also traveled across the country. My favorite part of archery is meeting new people. I have met and made so many new friends in the S3 DA program, so much so that we have created Archery Pen Pals.

Q: Which discipline do you like best and why? (Indoor, 3-D, Outdoor Target) A: Indoor Target is my favorite. Indoor is fun because you are standing side by side of your competitors and friends. I feel like you must work harder and stay focused. I like that it is 5 arrows vs 1 arrow. There is always that 1 arrow that does not go where you want, and it is easier to make up for it in Indoor. Plus, NO BUGS!

A: My first bow was a Hoyt Ignite that I received for my 7* birthday. When I was nine years old, I joined the Hendricks County 4-H Shooting Sports Club. Prior to my 10'h birthday, I joined the newly formed Pine Hill Prodigies S3DA Team. I participated in the Elementary Pins Division for the last 2 years.

This past year I won Indoor and Outdoor Target Nationals and qualified first in 3-D Nationals; ultimately finishing in 3rd Place after missing the 14 for the win by about a Vi inch on the final shoot down arrow.

Q: What got you involved in archery?

A: I was drawn to archery by watching my dad practice for bow hunting in the backyard. It was through 4-H Club that 1 discovered I had an aptitude for archery.

Q: Are you a bow hunter? If so, have you had success?

A: I started hunting at age 7. My first hunt was with my Grandpa Terry and my dad for a wild turkey. I was successful on opening day shooting a Jake. This past spring, 1 took my bow to the woods for the first time hoping to harvest a gobbler.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t unsuccessful, but I hope to put a big buck down this fall with my bow. Shoot straight and happy hunting!

Q: Why do you enjoy archery?

A: Archery provides me with a great opportunity to shoot with friends close to home and from across the country. I like to set personal archery goals each season and practice hard to achieve them.

Q: Which discipline do you like best and why? (Indoor, 3-D, Outdoor Target) A: I enjoy all aspects of S3DA, but probably enjoy 3-D archery the most because it closely replicates hunting scenarios.

Organizational Development at USA Archery. With over 15 years of experience in Sports Management and Business Administration, Mary has contributed to the development and implementation of strategic plans for local, state, and national sport programs.

Mary holds a bachelor’s degree from Indiana State University, master’s degree from Michigan State University and is a member of the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) Board of Directors.

Mary is a graduate of the 2017 Team USA Leadership Certificate Program and recipient of the 2010 State of Michigan Governor’s Award. Mary says, “As an S3DA Board Member, 1 look forward to finding additional ways to collaboratively grow the sport of archery and advance R3 goals.”

Jennifer Mazur is the Senior Director of Outreach and Education with the Archery Trade Association (ATA). Jennifer earned a bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources Management from the University of Maryland. Jennifer is a Level 4 Archery Coach, as recognized by USA Archery, NFAA, ASA, and S3DA and she holds an S3DA Advanced Archery Instructor Trainer certification. In her early career, she wrote and implemented environmental education curriculum for Maryland’s Montgomery County and Calvert County public schools. As a naturalist for 17 years, Jennifer implemented many environmental and conservation programs within parks and recreation departments. Jennifer has appeared on PBS Outdoors Maryland, FOX News, The Washington Post as well as being featured in numerous local papers. In her current position, she directs the Outreach and Education team in developing strategy to increase participation in the sport of archery and bowhunting. Jennifer co-authored the Explore Archery curriculum with USA Archery and served as the primary author for the revised Level 1 and Level 2 certification manuals. Jennifer states, “I learned about S3 DA from Jennie Richardson when she

was discussing her passion for getting kids outside. I became a board member as a reflection of the growing partnership between ATA and S3DA.” Brittany Salonen is the Operations Director for the National Field Archery Association (NFAA) and Event Director for the annual Vegas Shoot. Brittany has been with the company since 2012, starting as the Trade Show Manager, then the Marketing & Events Director, before moving into her current role in the summer of 2018. Brittany assists with the NFAA’s membership, events, outreach efforts and partnerships, including the NFAA’s partnership with S3DA. Brittany received her undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and her MBA from the University of South Dakota. Brittany enjoys spending time with her family and friends and loves being on the road traveling and seeing new places.

Jack Fares attended Evansville College then spent the next six years in the United States Air Force. During the next thirty years he flew for Northwest airlines as a pilot. In 2005, Jack bought a Harley-Davidson dealership and in 2008 built a new Jack Fares 55,000 square feet dealership which became one of the top twenty-five dealerships in the country. Jack was selected to serve on the dealer advisory committee for Harley-Davidson Financial services with seven other dealers. In 2015, Jack built a state-of-the-art indoor gun range next to the dealership where he met archery coach Tom Patterson, who told him about the NASP program.

After that meeting. Jack started working on getting the program into his granddaughter's school. It took two years, but with the help of Tom, they were successful.

Later. Jack found out about S3 DA and became very involved with the program. Jack became an S3 DA coach and has helped during set-up for both K.Y State and National S3 DA tournament events. He purchased his first hunting license at the age of seventy-one and shot his first deer (which was a 9-pointer). In 2017, Jack sold all his businesses. He now serves on the Tourism Board for the city of Grand Rivers, K.Y. Jack says, “I believe the S3 DA. program is one of the top programs in the country. I can see how it has not only affected my granddaughter but my wife and myself.

This program provides families opportunities to enjoy something together.”

The National Archery in the Schools Program has become the largest and most successful youth archery organization in the world.

Since inception in 2002, over 18 million students in 47 states and 11 other countries have enjoyed a safe and positive experience as a part of NASP®. In June of 2018, a steering committee of NASP® graduates was assembled to discuss the idea of a NASP® Alumni Association. After a very positive response from the steering committee, the decision was made

by NASP® leadership to move forward with a pilot program to establish an alumni effort among the one million archers that have experienced NASP® in the state of Kentucky.

NASP® is extremely proud to announce the selection of Ms. Courtnie Carr as its first-ever NASP® Alumni Association Director. Ms. Carr is currently a senior at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, KY. She is a spring candidate for a B.S. in Business Administration and a B. A. in Communication Arts. Courtnie is a senior member of the UC Archery team, and was a member of the Western Hills H. S. NASP® team in Frankfort, Ky. Her outstanding communication, technology and networking skills combined with her strong desire 52

to see millions of NASP® alumni reconnect with the program, should prove to be a very powerful combination in the development of an alumni association for KY NASP® students and beyond. Her focus for the 2018/2019 school year will focus on the state of Kentucky.

NASP® Vice President and General Manager Dr. Tommy Floyd said, “We continue to hear the urgency from the archery industry as well as among state DNRs about the current state of R3 (Recruitment, Retention, and Reactivation) and archery participation numbers. We know that NASP® is working for conservation, education, and the archery industry, we now believe it is time to reach out to those individuals no longer in our program. Current NASP® alumni represent millions of former participants, now ranging from 18 to 34 years of age. The opportunity to reconnect with these alumni and reintroduce them to available shooting opportunities and outdoor activities should be extremely attractive to many entities associated with the entire outdoor experience. We are hopeful that many of these entities recognize the potential of connecting with this group of young adults and will support this effort. We believe Courtnie will bring the energy and effort to make this dream into a reality!

Following the steering committee meeting in June, it was obvious that this small group of alumni were very excited about reconnecting with something that brought them so much joy while in school. The first words from most of them were how they wanted to give back to those currently

Another 19% reported their start in archery was due to a sibling or parent who was first in NASP®. While most archery fans recognize the tremendous value of first-time archers, many in the archery industry have voiced excitement about the possibility of a NASP® alumni association to engage millennials that now have the resources to make a variety of additional archery participation choices. August 29, 2018 With the NASPO/IBO 3D Challenge continuing to be the largest youth 3D archery program ever which now includes NASP® archers from 40 states, the International Bowhunting Organization welcomes Joel and Christie Zimmer to the NASP®/ IBO 3D Team! Starting with the 2019 NASP® season, Joel and Christie will be working with even more states to offer additional State Level NASP®/IBO 3D Tournaments. from page 34, to continue engagement with NASP® alumni will be closely evaluated with the hope that it will be rolled out beyond this states’ boundaries, just as NASP® was 17 years ago.”

KY NASP® Coordinator Lisa Frye said, “The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources strives to establish a strong R3 program using data to drive our education programs like NASP®, Field to Fork, Hunter’s Legacy, Angler’s Legacy, and other strategies to recruit, retain, and reactivate sportsmen and sportswomen.

We know that NASP® has been a driving force in the increase of shooting sports participation nationally. We also know that the majority of students graduating from high school, having had the opportunity to participate in NASP®, want to continue participating in archery and other outdoor related activities.

With Courtnie organizing and gathering this alumni group, the possibilities are endless. I am so excited about the impact this could have on Kentucky’s R3 efforts and the archery industry.”

Together, Joel and Christie have 29 years of experience with NASP® and have been a fixture on the bullseye ranges at NASP® National and World tournaments for years. “We are excited to have them bring their knowledge and enthusiasm to NASP®/1BO 3D to assist us with the continued growth of our amazing sport,” said Director of NASP®/IBO 3D Ryan Bass.

Currently there are 21 states that hold a state level tournament that prepare NASP® archers for National and World level tournaments. “There is a growing demand for more states to hold these tournaments however many times those states don’t have the time or resources to add another program to their already busy schedules. This is where the IBO can come into those states and hold tournaments for them at no cost to the State.” With the addition of Joel and Christie to the NASP®/IBO 3D, IBO will be able to double its reach and offer this exciting opportunity to more NASP® archers.

NASP® Academic Archer Program and On Target for Life Awards to open September 1, 2018!

The National Archery in the Schools Program and Easton Technical Products announce the opening of the fourth year of the popular NASP® Academic Archer program.

In its first year of implementation, the NASP® academic recognition program finished with 8,517 students enrolled. Educators from US states and two Canadian Provinces implemented the NASP® Academic Archer Program. In its second year. Academic Archer achieved tremendous growth and closed out on April 30, 2017 with 19,381 students enrolled from schools in the US, Canada, and the British Virgin Islands. 2018 was yet another record-breaking year with 25,266 students enrolled.

“Academic Archer and On Target for Life will both go live on September 1 for the 2018-2019 school year,” said NASP® Vice President and General Manager Tommy Floyd. “We hope that every NASP® jurisdiction will enroll students in the program.”

NASP® president Roy Grimes said, “It is our intention to send the strongest of messages about how teaching archery as part of the school curriculum is important to the mission of educators. As we've stated before, the more we emphasize in school archery as an extension of the classroom,

The National Archery in the School’s Press Release 10th Time is a Charm for Student Archers at NASP® Worlds June 12, 2018 By: Brittany J Jones

Brittany Since its inception in 2002, the National Archery in the School’s Program (NASP®) has been hosting its eastern nation­ al tournaments in the Bluegrass State's one and only, Louisville, Kentucky. After sixteen years, Louisville’s Exposition Center opened its doors for the first time to host the 2018 NASP® World Tournament. Archers from all over the United States, along with friends and family, gathered June 7-9 to showcase all the hard work and dedication they’ve invested throughout the year. As these ded­ icated archers approached their assigned lanes, they carefully “nocked” their arrow, took a deep breath as they aimed and released to establish their “rank” in the NASP® world!

More than 10,000 friends and family came to spectate this renowned tournament and more than 180 volunteers signed up to make this event a success. Ex­ actly 4,967 student archers from 358 schools participated in this year’s tournament, breaking the 2015 world tournament (held at Nashville’s Music City Center) record of 4,871. With regards to the range, there were no surprises as NASP® maintained the same competitive format used from past tournaments. Each flight was 60 minutes in length during which each archer shot five practice ar­ rows and fifteen scored arrows; A total of forty arrows. Archers shot “bare-bow” style from ten and fif­ teen-meter shooting lines using no stabilizers, sights, or release aids.

As the whistle sounded, arrows took flight, and results flew in!

Beginning with the Elemen­ tary Division, the top male and female shooters are as follows.

Mathew Harper, a fifth grader who attends Maysville Elementa­ ry School in Ohio achieved the top male spot with a score of 294 (24 tens). Lola Norman, also a fifth grader and Academic Archer (AA) who attends Foundation Christian Academy in Kentucky, shot a 291 with 24 tens, earning her the top female spot in the Elementary Di­ vision.

In the Middle School Divi­ sion, Karson Warrington, an eighth grader who attends Zaneis School in Oklahoma, earned top honors with his score of 298 (28 tens).

Beth Merrifield, an eighth grad­ er and AA from Jefferson Middle School in Illinois was awarded the top female spot with her score of 293 (23 tens).

Last, but not least in the High School Division, Donald Holupka, a tenth grader and A A who attends Hillsboro High School in Missouri achieved top male hon­ ors with this high score of 298 (28 tens). Kamryn Twehus, also a tenth grader from Blair Oaks High School in Missouri shot a near perfect score of a 299 (29 tens).

Congratulations to all archers on your outstanding performance!

In addition to the divisional winners, NASP® also recogniz­ es the overall winners from the combined divisions. The overall male for the 2018 World NASP® Tournament went to Missouri’s Donald Holupka after winning a tie-breaker with Oklahoma’s Kar­ son Warrington who both shot 298s. The overall female winner was awarded to Kamryn Twehus, a tenth grader from Blair Oaks H.S. with her score of 299 (29

tens). Overall runner up went to Emilee Manning, a twelfth grader from Chandler H.S. in Oklahoma.

Congratulations to these archers!

NASP® teams are com­ prised of 12-24 student archers with students of both genders re­ quired to be on the team. The top possible score is 3,600 points.

Top team honors in the bulls-eye competition go to: Benton Ele­ mentary School with a total score of 3317 (152 tens), Caudill Mid­ dle School with their score of 3410 (211 tens), and Castle High School with a score of 3454 (244 tens).

While the bullseye compe­ tition was ongoing in the North Wing of the Expo Center, the NASP®/International Bowhunt­ ing Organization’s 3D Challenge (NASP®/IBO 3D Challenge), was underway right next door in the South Wing. 1,529 archers from 167 schools participated in the 3D challenge this year, a thirty percent increase from last year’s world tournament in sunny Orlan­ do, Florida, which stood at 1,179.

The overall male winner in the 3D competition went to Tom­ my Wills, a seventh grader and A A who attends Mcewen Mid­ dle School in Tennessee, with his high score of 298 (28 tens). Over­ all male runner up was awarded to Roby Mullins, a twelfth grad­ er and AA who attends Lincoln County H.S. in KY. His score was a 297(27 tens). The overall 3D female shooter was awarded to Kimberly Matherly, a tenth grader and AA from Reitz Memorial H.S. in Indiana, with her score 298 (28 tens). Runner up female went to Lilly Machart, representing Io­ wa’s Alamosa High School with a score of 297. To date, NASP® has awarded $1.6 million dol­ lars in cash scholarships to NASP® students to use for any post-high school education of their choosing.

A total of seventeen male and female archers, deter­ mined at the Eastern and Western National Tourna­ ments held in Louisville and Salt Lake City, competed in a scholarship shoot-off at this year’s World Tour­ nament. Each archer shot five practice arrows and five scored arrows at fifteen meters. The results of the scholarship shoot-off are as follows: In the male cate­ gory: S20k in cash scholarship was awarded to Dalton Hinkle, Caleb Thornton received SI5k, Kaden Chris­ tenson was given SI Ok, Donald Holupka received S5k, Cole Murphy received $2.5k, and finally Slk was given to Jerod Aycox, Thomas Fletcher, Justin Liveoak and Trenton Meyer. In the female category: Holly Snow received S20k, Anna Herbert was award­ ed SI5k, Breann Holtz (from Western Nationals) won S1 Ok, Ally Nordell received $5k, $2.5k went to Maria Zielinski, and finally Slk went to Dorothy Cobb, Ra­ chel Hatfield, and Brooklyn Keck.

"My experience at NASP® Worlds was amaz­ ing! I never dreamed that 1 would have this experi­ ence as a Freshman or that I would end up in the thirdplace spot,” says Breann Holtz, a ninth grader from Lawton-Bronson Junior/Senior High School (Iowa) who won ten thousand dollars in the 2018 scholar­ ship shoot-off described above. Holtz also said, “The scholarship shoot-off was intense, and 1 am so grate­ ful I was able to participate and hope I will have an opportunity again in the future.” This is Holtz’s first time competing in a National or World Tournament since the Nationals was split into two events, Eastern and Western Nationals. “Offering NASP® archers in the western U.S. an opportunity to participate in a major tournament closer to home, is one of the main reasons the Western Nationals was implemented. Breann’s first-time participation and success validates our decision”, says NASP® CEO/President, Roy Grimes.

Of course, the success of NASP® tourna­ ments rely heavily on the hard-working volunteers that set-up and work the range from start to finish and the medal-level sponsors that provide the necessary equipment to make the competitions a success. This was the 10th year of the World NASP® Tournament since the first one was held at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports in Orlando. Due to minimal participation from other NASP® countries, NASP® will be making some changes to the World Tourna­ ment, possibly offering a “remote” option to allow other countries a more convenient and far more af­ fordable way to establish world archer rank in 2019.

Looking ahead, international NASP® All-Star Teams will compete in the All-Star Championship in Calgary, Alberta July 8-11. Teams who will be com­ peting in this all-star event hail from Africa, Canada, and the Unites States!

Dual Chamber Technol­ ogy combines a rigid foam shell, that is packed tightly with compression material, which is then backed up with a solid compression core. Perkins Named 2018 Vegas Champion Following Disqualification of Eyler

Christopher Perkins, Athens, Ontario, has been named the winner of the 2018 Vegas Shoot’s Championship Compound Open division following the disqualification of Bob Eyler of Dundee, Michigan.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) announced today that Bob Eyler has tested positive for two prohibited substances at the 2018 Vegas Shoot. February 11. and has been given a two-year sanction for his violation. Eyler’s two-year period of ineligibility began on September 28, 2018, the date his sanction was imposed. As a result of the doping violation, Eyler’s results obtained on and subsequent to February 11,2018 have been disqualified including The Vegas Shoot and the NFAA Indoor National Championships. Eyler must forfeit any medals, points, or prize money.

“It is important that all archers are competing on an even playing field, especially as the level of prize money continues to grow. This process has been a good learning experience for us as an industry and our goal is to introduce doping control at all professional archery events in the near future,” explained Bruce Cull, The Vegas Shoot President.

The Vegas Shoot, the largest indoor archery event of the year, attracts over 3,500 archers from around the World. The shoot off for the Championship Compound Open title is the culmination of the 3-day

event and features a sudden-death shoot down for the $52,000 grand prize. Archers earn a guaranteed spot in the shoot off by shooting a perfect 900 score over three days of competition.

One additional archer earns a spot in the shoot off by winning the title of “Lucky Dog”. The lucky dog is the one 899 shooter that wins the opportunity to compete against the perfect 900 shooters. The lucky dog is determined in an arrow-by-arrow shoot down with all 899 shooters participating. The lucky dog can win the shoot off to claim the Vegas title or will be placed back into regular ranking at the top of the 899’s.

The 2018 Championship Compound Open shoot off came down to a face-off between Eyler and “Lucky Dog” Perkins. Eyler defeated Perkins, putting Perkins in ninth place at the bottom of the eight other shoot off participants. As a result of Eyler’s disqualification.

Perkins will jump from ninth place to first and will claim the $52,000 prize and the coveted Vegas title.

Perkins is the second lucky dog to take the Vegas title, Sergio Pagni was the first in 2016.

“Although we can’t go back and give Chris Perkins that winning moment in front of the roaring shoot-off crowd, we hope that the archery community will help in congratulating him on the incredible achievement of his first Vegas title,” encouraged Cull.

“There will also be a special recognition for him at the 2019 Vegas Shoot.”
