A closer look at the individuals guiding the NFAA’s mission and shaping the future of archery.

rocky kline great lakes Councilman I began my career in archery in 1963. As my love for archery progressed, I purchased a recurve bow, then I went to PSE compound bows. I found an outdoor range in my hometown, the Izaak Walton League, and spent countless hours there refining my craft. In 1964, I stumbled upon a range in Galveston, Indiana called the Galveston Archery Club. I have spent the last 61 years at this club. I have served in many roles, including President for the last 35 years.

In 1970, I was introduced to the National Field Archery Association (NFAA). I immediately became involved and have now been a member for 57 years. I have worked on many NFAA committees and have served as the Great Lakes Councilman for over 13 years. In my time with the NFAA I have participated in and worked many state, national, and world tournaments all over the United States.

Archery has brought me many moments of joy. I have been a merit badge counselor for Boy Scouts of America for countless years. I have instructed many beginning archers who went on to win awards at the state and national level.

I love archery so much that I even took a job at the beginning of retirement at a shop in archery in my hometown.

I spent the last 20+ years working on setting up bows for many shop customers and family members.

The sport of archery has been so good to me. I have made lifelong friends, traveled all over the country, and have been able to share priceless memories with my family as we have hunted and shot bows together. I had no idea when I picked that first bow up almost 60 years ago how great of a decision it was for me. Archery has shaped my life in so many positive ways, and I am forever grateful.

randy buckley maryland director Some of my earliest and fondest memories are from participating in archery tournaments in Pennsylvania and New Jersey with my father and grandfather. I recently found a picture of me and my father taken in 1966. I was born in 1962, so it’s a picture of me shooting before I was four years old. Behind me in the picture is my father teaching someone archery form. My father was my inspiration in many ways, and I consider him to be one of the innovators of archery during the 60’s and 70’s having created his own sights, stabilizers, and releases. I still have some of his archery inventions.

We eventually stepped away from archery due to interests in other things that life presented at the time; Scuba diving,

little league baseball and football coaching, bowling, and travel, among other things. After high school, I joined the Marines and recently retired from the Department of Defense. Many years ago, I discovered that I really sucked at golf. So, I decided to revisit some of my old memories and return to archery. It was like going home.

I jumped in with both feet much to my wife’s chagrin at times. I joined a local archery club and spent a lot of time there shooting and working at the range. I eventually became the Vice President of the club and then the Tournament Director for the State Association. Our club taught the county archery lessons, so I eventually took the classes and earned my USA Level-2 instructor certificate, and then a USA Level-2 Judge and an NFAA judge certification. And if that wasn’t enough, I also became a National Archery in the Schools Program Basic Archery Instructor (NASP BAI). When our previous State Director, Terry Crowl, died in a terrible motorcycle accident, the State Association members asked me to take on the responsibilities. I was honored to accept the position.

The thing that I have always loved about archery is the family community and inclusiveness. There are very few introverts and grumpy people in archery.

Most people when asked are happy to tell you about their experiences and what they do to get a tighter group. Archery includes boys, girls, men, women, young and old as well as physically and mentally challenged people. As an instructor, I’ve seen kids who were at first afraid to draw the bow to become confident archers. Some of the greatest rewards are watching the young archers catch the “Ah hah” moment when they get a tight group on a blank bail or pop the balloon.

In my experience, the key element for the success of any organization is effective communication.

That’s where the NFAA becomes a critical asset for the archery community. In order for an archer of any age to progress from a club level to the national stage, they need reliable information. Clubs need to be able to share information and coordinate tournament schedules with a State Association. And the State Association needs to pass on the sectional and national level events and deconflict event schedules where possible. Effective communication in every venue from websites, social media pages, direct emails, and at times local newspapers. The NFAA has available resources for active members and registered clubs to post their club information and sanctioned events. I’m proud to be a part of this successful organization.

I picked up archery as a hobby, something to do after work and maybe on a weekend, in 2014. I now work as an archery instructor and technician. When my wife and I took a trip to Kentucky for the 2023 NFAA Indoor National Championships, I chuckled to think, ‘Right, just a hobby.’ I particularly love shooting Barebow Recurve, Traditional, or Longbow indoors while working on Bowhunter Freestyle during the outdoor seasons. I became the Maine State Director for the NFAA in 2022, and I love being able to help grow the sport in Maine while becoming more connected with the community. In the Fall of 2024, I became a USA Archery Level III Coach. Outside of archery, my other big passions are traveling and reading. scores, tournament info and more at nfaausa.com 9

2026 NFAA National Indoor Championships - March 6-8 The NFAA Indoor Nationals brings together the top NFAA archers from around the world to shoot the iconic 40 cm blue and white target face. Now in its 45th year, the tournament has called several cities home, including Omaha, Kansas City, Tulsa, Louisville, Chicago, and now Memphis. The 2026 Indoor Nationals will take place March 6–8 at the Renasant Convention Center, a modern venue located in the heart of downtown Memphis. NFAA Indoor sectional Championships & indoor national series 2026 2026 Tournament Format The 2026 Indoor Sectional format for all sections will consist of the best one of two NFAA 300 blue/white rounds. Each archer may choose to shoot either one or two rounds. Only the highest score will count toward their final sectional and national ranking. If an archer chooses to compete at more than one location within his/her section, the best score from their first location will count.

Inside-out scoring of the X-ring will be used at all locations for tie-breakers. Electronic Scoring will be used at all sectional locations for live updates.

Bowhunters Benefit from Competitive Archery By jackie holbrook Bowhunters wait all year for hunting season and it never seems to last long enough.

But you’re in luck. Many bowhunters have found that competing in NFAA tournaments is a great way to scratch the archery itch.

Another big bonus is that competition will improve your bowhunting skills in multiple ways.

Develop Muscle Memory Finding bowhunting success and competing in NFAA tournaments both require plenty of practice. Attending even one or two tournaments will give you the motivation and extra practice you need to be polished before hunting season starts.

“Competition helps you develop muscle memory so you can concentrate on making the shot,” says Brandon Higley, the NFAA State Director for Idaho. “You’ll develop a subconscious shot sequence so your entire focus can be on the animal, giving you the most accurate and ethical shot possible.”

Enjoy the Elements The NFAA hosts indoor and outdoor tournaments year-round. Indoor tournaments give archers the opportunity to keep shooting even when the weather isn’t cooperating. Outdoor competitions mimic bowhunting scenarios, giving you practice shooting in all the elements Mother Nature has to offer. “When you shoot field for example you can really figure out how your equipment performs in different weather conditions, angles, slopes and lighting,” Higley noted.

Practice Performing Under Pressure Some bowhunters suffer from buck fever, a sensation similar to what competitive archers call target panic. These nervous feelings often produce bad shots. Shooting under the pressure of competition is a great way to practice managing those nerves so you are better able to perform at crunch time.

“I get butterflies and nervous whenever I shoot a tournament,” Higley said. “Whenever I put hard work into what I’m doing that day, I get nervous so it [hunting] teaches me how to perform under high stress situations.”

Learn Where to Aim on Animals NFAA 3D tournaments give archers the opportunity to aim on large, foam animal targets. The scoring rings on most of the targets are meant to overlay the animal’s vitals. Aiming on an animal form as opposed to a paper target provides great practice for the real deal.

Find New Friends Competing in archery tournaments improves your skills, abilities and confidence, but one of the most valuable benefits to come from competition might be the friendships. “Especially if you are new to an area, come to the 3D shoots, you’ll meet a lot of people,” Higley emphasized. “You’ll start talking about hunting and you’ll make some friends.”

Fellow bowhunters are a great resource for information. They might stop short of sharing the GPS coordinates to their go-to hunting spot, but most people are willing to swap knowledge, especially if you’re new to the sport. And you should definitely be prepared to hear some hunting stories. “It’s a close-knit community,” remarks Higley. “I’ll be traveling with people to a tournament and we’ll talk hunting the entire way there and back, even if it’s a Spring archery shoot.”

NFAA competitions will not only improve your performance and introduce you to other bowhunters, but all time spent with a bow in your hand gives you an edge in the field. As Higley relayed, “You and your bow are a team, so if you’re not practiced up, you can’t work together like you need to.”

2026 Shooter of the year ProGram updates The Shooter of the Year (SOY) Program has been updated to provide a broader array of NFAA tournaments, offering a more complete representation of the nation’s best all-around archer for the year. Point multipliers are applied to tournament rankings to reflect each event’s broadly perceived prestige and/or its longstanding tradition within the NFAA calendar. The SOY categories have been greatly expanded to include all NFAA shooting styles, ensuring that every archer has the opportunity to be recognized for their outstanding achievements.

- If an archer competes in one or more SOY events as a Young Adult prior to their 18th birthday, they will remain in the Junior SOY category for the entirety of that SOY season.

2025 sectional travel scholarship

The NFAA in partnership with the NFAA Foundation, is proud to announce the recipients of the 2025 Sectional Travel Scholarships! This annual scholarship offers a special opportunity for young archers to pursue their passion and participate in events across the nation. One male and one female archer from each NFAA Section were selected to receive a $500 travel award and a complimentary junior entry fee to an eligible NFAA or NFAA Foundation event. This stipend may be used to assist with travel-related expenses such as transportation, lodging, or meals while attending an eligible event.

The inaugural 2025 Collegiate Cup Invitational brought student-athletes from across the country together in a four-week virtual format. Running from October 13 to November 15, the event allowed teams to compete remotely using a standardized structure, scoring system, and virtual head-to-head finale. The top two teams earned personalized pennants, and the first-place team received a $500 scholarship.

Five collegiate teams participated: William Carey University (MS), Muskingum University (OH), Pennsylvania College of Technology (PA), Michigan State University (MI), and Mount Marty University (SD).

The qualification session had two phases. Archers shot two NFAA 300 Rounds during the first two weeks and two Vegas 300 Rounds in weeks three and four.

Each school could register unlimited archers, but only scores from the top archer in each of four disciplines—Freestyle, Freestyle Limited Recurve, Bowhunter Freestyle, and Barebow Recurve—counted, with the top two teams advancing to finals.

The finals ran in a head-to-head format on the Vegas 3-spot target. Each team selected one archer from each discipline for the virtual team round. BBR and FSLR archers shot ends one and three, while FS and BHFS shot ends two and four, with a two-minute clock per end and a 240-point maximum.

The championship match between William Carey University and Muskingum University delivered a high-energy showdown. William Carey claimed the title with a 223–205 victory, earning the championship pennant and $500 scholarship.

Members of the winning team shared their experience. Emmie Purcell said, “The Collegiate Cup was a great virtual experience… It was a fun way to jumpstart the indoor season and practice shoot-offs.” Elias Reyes added, “It gave me the opportunity to feel that tournament rush while shooting at my University, and it was fun to shoot alongside my teammates even though we were from different bow classes.”

The 2025 Collegiate Cup Invitational highlighted the value of hybrid and virtual formats, giving teams a national platform from their home ranges and promoting consistency and team cohesion. As the event evolves, the NFAA is expanding participation, supporting collegiate clubs, and refining competition formats to help programs grow and athletes excel.

Honoring a legacy: Dean Pridgen NFAA Hall of Fame recipient, Dean Pridgen passed away on August 30, 2025. Many of the younger archers may not remember Dean, but many of the older archers will never forget him.

Dean was a wonderful sportsman, gentleman, and true ambassador for the sport of archery. His 44 years competing in the sport was remarkable in many ways. His list of Records and Championship wins, both Indoor and Outdoor may never be repeated. Dean still holds two aggregate NFAA record scores in the Men’s Master Senior Division.

Dean’s love for the sport was unsurpassed. He and his wife Rosie who passed away on July 25th traveled the country setting records and collecting silver bowls throughout their 44 plus years in competition. Both are fondly remembered by many.

A pivotal year for Dean was 1972, when he bought his first compound bow at the age of 35. Dean once said, “Up until that time, I was just a guy shooting a few arrows out of a recurve in the back yard and around the local club. My scores weren’t all that good, maybe mediocre at best back then, and I can’t really explain it, but something magical seemed to have happened after I got my first compound bow……”

“Compound bows were relatively new at the time. Most people were still shooting recurves. A classic tale of Man vs Machine perhaps….every day, I was trying to find another way to make it shoot better and make it more consistent. I knew that the more consistent my equipment performed, the better my scores would be. My first compound wasn’t a target model at all, it was a bowhunting model. I remember that it was a Jennings hunting bow with a wooden handle. I didn’t really know what I was buying, I just thought that I would buy this one and try it out….three months later I decided to take a trip to the Outdoor Nationals to see just how well I could do.”

Little did he know that he was about to shape the sport of archery for many years to come. He walked away from this first trip to the 1972 Outdoor Nationals with his first National Championship title. That first major win inspired Dean and after he won the Outdoor Nationals again in 1973, Tom Jennings offered him an opportunity to be the very first sanctioned Pro with a full sponsorship to shoot for Jennings Archery. From that point forward, Dean’s appetite for shooting and competing just seemed to grow and so did his list of wins.

By 1979, Dean had won 4 of his first 8 trips to the Outdoor Nationals (having won in 1972, 1973, 1977, and 1979). By 1982 Dean had won a total of 22 consecutive State Championships in a row. He had won the NFAA Midwestern Outdoor Sectionals 10 times, and the Indoor Sectionals 5 times. During his first 11 trips to the Outdoor Nationals he finished on the #1 bale 8 of those 11 times.

In 1982, one of Deans most accomplished years, he had won his first NFAA Indoor Nationals (wrestling the title away from Terry Ragsdale, who had won it the prior 4 years in a row). Dean also won Vegas that year at the Tropicana hotel, and he achieved the all around top PRO award for the most Pro Points of any Professional Male Archer. You would think that having accomplished so much in 10 years would be enough for anyone. But Dean didn’t slow down and he didn’t let up either.

He went on to win the NFAA Indoor Nationals as a Pro again in 1984 and 1985. He was the PAA Pro Champion in 1985 -1986. He won the L-K Open in 1985, and also became the PAA Indoor National Champion that year as well. Fresno Safari Champion, Lake of the Woods Champion, 10,000 Lakes Champion (twice), Big Sky Open Champion (twice), and Five Time Easton Points Champion in the Pro Division. All in all a total of 22 National NFAA Championship titles, 39 NFAA Sectional wins as a Pro and an additional 17 NFAA Sectional wins as a Senior. A total of 43 State wins as a Pro and an additional 18 championships as a Senior.

Dean and Rosie traveled to Europe, Germany, and Sweden, where he made it to the finals with various other partners in 4 World Professional Team Championships on four separate occasions. You might laugh, but this list of wins does not even include local and regional tournaments that he also shot and won over his many years.

Dean had written a couple articles in Archery Focus Magazine over the years, and been an NFAA Master Coach, and Lifetime member of the NFAA. In 2014, Dean was awarded the NFAA Hall of Fame award. When asked about it, Dean said that it was the greatest achievement he could have ever asked for.

A true gentleman on the course as well as off the course. Dean endorsed and shot for many bow manufacturers (Jennings, Pearson, Golden Eagle, PSE, Hoyt, Matthews, York, and the list goes on). He designed, manufactured, and marketed his own FAIL SAFE signature release, with the help of Lloyd Napier, and provided technical support for the engineering designs of many bows, limbs, wheels, and cams.

No matter how you define the word “Champion”, Dean’s list of accomplishments have to be some of the most impressive and inspiring throughout the world of archery. So well decorated, it’s hard to imagine a career such as his. He will be remembered by many.

Fairwell my friend. Rest in Peace. You gave the sport of archery your very best. And we will be forever grateful.

North american field archery championships

The 2025 North American Field Archery Championships (NAFAC) concluded a compelling weekend of competition on December 13–14, 2025, at the scenic Lee County Archers range in North Fort Myers, Florida.

The event drew a diverse field of competitors from across the United States, Canada, and beyond to contest field, animal, and hunter rounds under challenging natural terrain and variable conditions. Archers across multiple age groups and shooting styles delivered performances of precision and endurance. Standout achievements were recorded across divisions, with several competitors setting new NAFAC records in their respective categories.

Highlights from the official results include: •

Andrew Fagan (AMFSU, Canada) dominated the Adult Men’s Freestyle Unlimited division, posting an exceptional combined total of 1675 points to lead the field.

Shannon Ward (AFFSU, Brevard) delivered a compelling performance in the Adult Female Freestyle Unlimited division with a 1579 total.

•

Ella Phillips (CFFSLR, Buffalo Field Archery Club) secured top honors in her class with a 1606 total.

•

Ari Alvarez-Depner (JMFSU, Lee County) posted an impressive 1644 total in the Junior Men’s Freestyle Unlimited division.

•

Joe Heist (VMFSU, Brevard) led the Veteran Men’s Freestyle Unlimited category with a 1617 total, showcasing veteran competitive excellence.

In addition to individual medals, numerous competitors achieved personal bests and division records, underlining the increasing depth and talent across field archery disciplines. The full results reflect robust participation across age brackets—from Cub through Senior and Veteran classes—and shooting styles, affirming NAFAC’s role as a premier competition in the North American field archery calendar.

Looking ahead, archers are encouraged to mark October 3-4 on their calendars for the 2026 NAFAC in Chino, California, hosted by Oranco Bowmen. I didn’t get involved in archery until I was about 23 years old. I started bow hunting, and a neighbor saw me shooting in my yard and invited me to join the local club. I shot a few local 3D tournaments, and soon started shooting circles as well. As my 2 little girls grew, they showed amazing archery talent, and I was soon chasing them to archery tournaments all over the world. I would shoot many of the tournaments along with my girls, and had a little success as well, even making the U.S.A.T. one year.

Of course, we were, and still are, avid bow hunters. I started shooting the Vegas tournament in 1993, and have only missed a couple of years since. I was lucky enough to shoot a 900 and make the shoot off once in the championship division, and I have finished 2nd two times in the senior championship division. I shot the NFAA indoor a couple times as an adult amateur, but didn’t start shooting as a pro until I turned 50 and won a silver bowl in 2017. I have tried to shoot as many of the big indoor tournaments as I can, and have been very fortunate to win a few, including Lancaster, Iowa Pro Am, and the Dakota Classic. I have had a couple of good years in Redding, with a couple of 1st place team finishes, and a 1st place individual finish in 2024. And did I mention that my family really likes to bow hunt?

nfaa member for 40 years I started bowhunting in 1972 and it was evident early on archery was the sport for me.

At the time, internet was not available plus there were only a few archery pro shops to visit and learn, so I traveled in search of help. That search led me to Buckskin Archery Shop in my home town. Not only did they have the answers, but the owners allowed me to work part time. This is where my education began in 1975 when my first local archery club was being started, “Cobb County Archery” in Kennesaw, Georgia. Several of the members were already NFAA members which helped me to understand tournament archery, so I joined the NFAA in 1975, I then learned all of the programs that the NFAA has to offer, NFAA Bowhunter and the NFAA competitions (Field, Target and Indoor).

After winning a couple of local tournaments and placing in other sectional events, I was hooked for life and updated my member status to NFAA Life Time Membership in 1984.

I became the Range Captain for our new club when our county donated us 11 flood plain acres for our range which is still active today. I started to plan and start building our own 28 target field range which would take us more than a year to complete. Our club was benefiting in that on some weekends we had more than 300 archers competing at our local tournaments In 1999, I retired from AT&T with 35 years employment. Later that year I went to work for the Atlanta “Bass Pro Shop” to co-manage their archery department until 2014, when Cabela’s opened a new store so I moved to become their archery technician.

To date, I was able to win more than 45 State Tournaments, 4 Sectional, and 2 National tournaments breaking and setting new state records along the way. I also became an Instructor and Tournament Judge for both NFAA and USA Archery.

Other archery organizations that I have been involved are: Pope & Young Club, USA Archery, Kennesaw Archery Club, Georgia Bowhunters Archery Assoc, Florida Archery Life Member, Easton Newberry Archery Center Newbery Florida, National senior Games and now Wisconsin Archery.

While participating in the NFAA Bow Hunter program I was able to harvest many big game animals to include: Rocky Mtn Bull Elk, Baren Ground Caribou, Whitetail Deer, Mule Deer, Pronghorn Antelope, Black Bear, Alligator, Feran Hogs, Javelina, Long Nose Gar, Carp and many small game animals that are all included in the NFAA Bowhunter Program.

I am very thankful to be associated with the NFAA and hope to have many more years.

nfaa member for 40 years I started archery as a senior in High School in Morton, Washington in 1972. My driver’s education teacher sold me his 72-inch 45lb Bear recurve and eight arrows. During the archery program for Physical Education, I had the highest scores because when I hit the target my arrows stayed in for scores.

After graduation I moved to New Mexico for college and joined an archery club in Deming, New Mexico.

A friend and I went over to Arizona for the Outdoor Southwest Sectional and there were hundreds of archers, which was one of the most exciting things to see. We spent our spare time trying to straighten out our aluminum arrows. scores, tournament info and more at nfaausa.com 43

I continued to shoot for the rest of my life. My first National Tournament was at Darrington when they held the IFAA World at the same time.

I have since shot State, Sectionals and National events every time that I could. Shot in the IFAA World in Driesch, Germany, IFAA European Championships in Bury St Edmonds, England, NFAA Nationals in Blue Springs, Detroit Lakes, New York, Wausau, Mechanicsburg, and Yankton.

My primary shooting style has been Barebow throughout the years and archery has been a major part of my life.

nfaa member for 50 years Bob Borges has dedicated nearly five decades to the archery world, building a distinguished career as a competitor, instructor, official, and leader within multiple major archery organizations. With 50 years of continuous involvement in the sport, he has served as a Shooter, NFAA Official, USA Archery official, and a member of the Board of Directors for the NFAA. Since March 1975, Bob has been active as an Archery Leader, Bowhunter, Bowhunting Instructor, and competitive archer.

A lifelong NFAA member, he has held several key leadership roles, including NFAA New Mexico State Director from 1993 to 1999 and again from 2004 to 2007, as well as NFAA Southwest Councilman from 2007 to 2017. He earned his certification as a Bowhunter Instructor in 1978. His long-standing commitment to the sport was formally recognized in 2002 when he was inducted into the New Mexico Bowhunters Association Hall of Fame and then in 2024 he was inducted into the Barebow Fraternity Hall of Fame.

An avid hunter, Bob has pursued Mule Deer, Whitetail Deer, Elk, Javalina, Antelope, and a wide variety of small-game species. His passion for archery extends deeply into competitive shooting, where he has excelled across multiple styles, including Barebow, Freestyle Limited, and Bowhunter divisions.

Bob’s competitive résumé includes notable performances at the Vegas Shoot, one of the largest and most prestigious tournaments in the world. His placements include 13th in 2022, 17th in 2020, 34th in 2019, 22nd in 2018, 14th in 2017, 16th in 2016, 11th in 2015, and 13th in 2014, alongside a remarkable 3rd-place finish in 2000. From 2013 and earlier, he consistently ranked within the top five of the Championship Barebow Division.

His achievements also include six National Championships—one in 3-D, one in U.S. Archery Indoor, one in Redding, NFAA Field in 2021 and two National Senior Olympic titles earned in 2019 and 2022. Over the course of his career, he has secured 74 State Championships across various formats, 17 NFAA Sectional titles, and set 29 New Mexico State Records across three different styles.

Bob has represented his state and the sport at a wide range of major events, including six NFAA Outdoor National Tournaments, two NFAA Indoor National Tournaments, 20 Vegas Shoots, and numerous statelevel competitions in both New Mexico and Texas. His participation in the New Mexico Bowhunters Association spanned from 1976 to 2017, and he has been an active member of the Texas Field Archery Association since 2017.

With a long history of leadership, instruction, and high-level competition, Bob Borges stands as a dedicated ambassador of archery and bowhunting, embodying passion, consistency, and commitment throughout his lifelong involvement the sport.

I have experienced two different eras in Archery—before Compounds and after! As a young boy, I started making my own bows and arrows out of tree branches. My first “real” bow was a Christmas gift from my parents when I was 13. It was a Ben Pearson, green fiberglass bow, that I still have today. One day, my father stopped by me as I was shooting at a hay bale in the yard on our farm. He asked to shoot the bow and as I handed the magical object to him, he got the “bug” also! A few days later, he purchased all the archery equipment that a local hardware store had, that was going out of business.

As we formed new friendships with the members, the men discussed bowhunting. A couple of the fellows were accomplished bowhunters. It was 1969 and my dad decided we too would bow hunt, and a trip to an archery shop ended with my Dad, brother and I leaving with new laminated recurve hunting bows. In 1970, dad and I got archery deer tags and on a very cold late December day, we both got our first archery deer.

In March of 1972, our local club held a tournament. At 17, I entered in the “Heavy Tackle” division as my hunting bow qualified as over “45-pound” draw weight. I always competed as an “instinctive” or Barebow Bowhunter, but in those years it was called Heavy Tackle. I defeated the men shooting that day and it was discovered that I was only 17, so they moved me to the barebow youth class and declared me a winner there instead.

After my 1972 shoot, I started shooting at nearby tournaments. In 1975, I purchased my first Allen Compound bow, which had a center-shot window, was much faster, and helped shrink the “gap” between my point and the bullseye. My scores started to climb. In 1976, I joined the NFAA, participated in my first Indoor State Championship, and won my class. I studied hard with text books I could find and especially used Fred Bear’s Archer’s Bible to analyze my shot patterns.

In 1979, I shot in my first Outdoor Nationals in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. I met the legend Fred Bear, who autographed my scorecard. Later, at Indoor Nationals, I met and had a long conversation with Tom Jennings, designer of most of the bows I shot in competition. I transferred from South Dakota to Wisconsin in 1987 to manage a facility and expanded into new shooting venues, winning many local tournaments. One weekend, I recall shooting six different indoor rounds.

After returning to South Dakota in the early 1990s, I continued to shoot leagues and got involved in a new shooting sports facility in Brookings, SD. As an Archery board member with the Outdoor Adventure Center, I participated in a meeting with NFAA President Bruce Cull, Easton Foundation Outreach Director Doug Engh, and Eric Tollefson as we looked for assistance for NASP, 4-H, Scouting, and SDSU with this new facility. It became the main hub for shooting sports in Brookings. My role was Archery Education Director, and between that and City Park & Rec training, I had trained at least 500 first-time shooters.

During my years as an NFAA member, I have competed at all levels, participated in the Art Young and Bowhunter programs, Mail Match, and created the design for the South Dakota Archers award medals.

My dream of hand making a quality wood bow is still a goal of mine.

I have not shot an archery round since the early 2000s and have not hunted since 2020. This time away has allowed me to look back on what has come to be my history within archery. I met many of the modern heroes, innovators and champions, and passed on my knowledge to those I trained. I have enjoyed watching new archers shoot their first bullseye or the balloon I set out for them. I see my time in archery as a completed work—something I can step back and look at and still feel how it felt to release an arrow and hit a target exactly where I was focused. getting over target panic by terry wunderle Target panic affects most archers at some point during their archery “careers.” This unwanted hurdle can produce premature movement in the bow arm or hamper the archer from getting the pin on the target. It is manifested when negative thoughts take over the thinking process as a shot is executed. When the archer becomes more concerned about missing, the target panic becomes greater and controls the situation.

Over-aiming and placing too much emphasis on aiming is the root cause for the dilemma. As the pin is placed on the dot, the brain is giving you the green light to shoot.

When it drifts off, it gives you a red light not to shoot.

The starting and stopping of the shot process alters your form, causing increased pin movement that magnifies the problem. When you place extra emphasis on aiming, you lose forward pressure with the bow arm, resulting in additional pin movement.

If target panic is affecting your shooting, the best way to overcome the problem is to change your thinking process. Quit putting the emphasis on aiming or hitting the 10-ring and place it on what you can control, which is shooting a shot with good form. If you do that and maintain steady pressure at the target with the bow arm, the arrow will find its mark. You have to learn to trust your form and put less focus on aiming.

To prove this process works, place a five-spot target at 30 yards. Shoot 15 shots with the emphasis on aiming and record your score. Then shoot another 15 shots, but this time concentrate on executing good form while the pin is floating. The comparison of the scores will tell you where your thinking should belong.

If you are suffering from a bad case of target panic, go to a blank practice bale and shoot at 10 yards while using your best form. Talk yourself through the shot process following a few simple steps. Make sure the bow arm maintains steady pressure at the target. Once you commit to the execution, try to get rid of the arrow in one second and not over two. Continue this procedure until you become comfortable with the execution. Now put up a target at 10 yards and repeat the routine. Make sure your emphasis and concentration is on perfect form execution. When this is mastered, proceed to shoot at twenty yards with the same mental process.

Since target panic is caused by the way you think, change your thought pattern to what you can control, which is shooting perfect form.
