On Nov. 20, the club presented a gift of $353,200 to renovate the varsity baseball field at Millburn High School.

Retired Millburn Detective Receives New Lease On Life This Holiday Season

By Anya Bochman oseph Johnson, retired detective of the Millburn Police Department, is fond of one popular saying that describes his relationship to police work – “If you love what you do, you never work a day in your life.”

It’s the motto he’s applied to his work ethic ever since entering the police academy in 1993, following a stint in the U.S. Navy. Starting his work as a rookie cop on patrol – which he describes as “an eye-opening experience” – he quickly became interested in investigative work.

“It’s very exciting and interesting, the whole aspect of law enforcement,” he said. “My heart is in investigation. When Millburn promoted me, I put it to good use and it was very educating.”

Johnson, of Franklin Park, is 53 and has six children and three grandchildren.

During the phone interview, he struggled to find a quiet place away from his granddaughter’s rambunctious play. It is perhaps his role as a family man that shaped the course of his life – and eventually saved it.

“My wife was very patient, but also

worried because of things I was involved in at work – such as the narcotics division,” Johnson stated.

It was his wife again who began worrying about his ongoing health problems, prompting him to “buy back” the three years he had served in the military so that he could officially retire from the force after the standard 25 years in December 2015. The choice proved prescient, as mere days after his departure from Millburn PD, Johnson fell gravely ill with the cardiomyopathy that he’d been diagnosed with years earlier. His family came to the rescue again, as his son made the life-saving decision to call an ambulance when Johnson fell after standing up.

Johnson traces his health problems to the Navy, where he worked in an engine room surrounded by pumps and machinery grease.

“They told me then – ‘this could affect you in the future,’” Johnson said. “And in 1987 I was diagnosed with sarcoidosis,” an inflammatory disease that can affect multiple areas of the body, including the lungs and heart.

However, for years, any potential issues lay dormant, and Johnson had no problems passing the physical exam to enter the police academy, spending decades investigating car jackings, home invasions and white-collar crime. continued on page 4

Then, in the winter of 2008, the detective came down with pneumonia twice and bronchitis three times – an alarming number for an otherwise healthy man in his 40s. Johnson was officially diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a weakening of the heart muscle. He started a medication regimen and lost some weight, but the heart problems struck again in 2011.

Almost immediately following his retirement, his illness reached a crescendo – Johnson could barely stand without

passing out. Following the 911 call from his son, he was taken to the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was given medication to strengthen the muscle of the heart – a treatment that ultimately failed.

It was then that the doctors at the center performed heart surgery to fit the former detective with an LVAD – a left ventricle assist device. While the surgery worked, his quality of life declined and the machinery for the LVAD – which Johnson

Hope came recently in a conflicting set of circumstances – a young organ donor from New Jersey had passed away, and Johnson received his heart as a transplant.

While Johnson has to take anti-rejection drugs for the rest of his life and receive regular biopsies to monitor the state of his new organ, he saw his quality of life improve dramatically.

“I still want to travel and do things, which would be difficult with the cumbersome LVAD,” he states. “Once you acclimate to the transplant, you feel like a regular person, like it is part of you. I would much rather take this route.”

emotional, processing. Johnson has an email he has written to the family of his donor; after a mandatory “cooling off” period, he can send it to the center, which will then pass it on to the family - which may or may not want to contact him back.

“I did a lot of soul-searching,” Johnson says. “This person did so much – he cared enough to fill out all those donor forms, just in case.”

For now, the retired detective is looking forward to spending time with his family, who were understandably “very relieved,” and taking in the enormous show of support from his former Navy and Millburn PD buddies.

“It was very uplifting,” Johnson says. “A big shout-out to Millburn PD – those guys mean a lot to me. It shows how much people care.”

Millburn Short Hills Boosters Help Reduce College Costs

By Henry M. Holden he Millburn-Short Hills Scholastic Boosters recently announced its annual fundraising campaign. This school year marks the 70th year of the Boosters providing grants to deserving Millburn students facing challenges with their college financial package. More than $1 million in grants have been awarded to more than 1,000 students.

The grant awards are confidential, but Stephen Whitty, whose son and daughter are recipients, agreed to share his story of how the grant helped.

“While the entire process is confidential, I’m happy to talk about how the grant helped us, if that helps other families take advantage of it,” said Whitty.

“We’re a Scholastic Boosters family, and we’ve made our own contributions for years,” he said. “When our children became of college age, they applied for its grants. Our daughter, Anna, received them throughout her four years at Marymount Manhattan; our son, James, a sophomore at Vanderbilt University, is currently receiving one, also.

“Our first reason for moving to Millburn

20 years ago was the schools, and I’m proud of the education our children got here; it certainly prepared them for college,” continues Whitty. “Nothing, though, can quite prepare parents for the costs of those institutions. For us the answer depended on a combination of our savings, loans and student aid; the Boosters grant was a welcome addition to all of that, and gave us a little breathing room as the various bills from fees, and books, to supplies, and travel costs home began to mount.

“James is doing well at Vanderbilt, where he’s been concentrating on English lit and staying on the Dean’s list; he’s interested, ultimately, in law and government, although a stint in the Navy may intervene,” says Whitty. “And a great deal of the success he’s had there has been due to not having to worry quite so much about money, a benefit of grants and scholarships, and generous groups like the Boosters.”

Rick Sacks, Millburn Short Hills Scholastic Boosters vice president said, “We look upon people more favorably if they have assumed a loan burden. We don’t want people saying, ‘well I’m not going to take a loan, but you can give me a grant.’ In fact, we

amended our application this year to say we look more favorably on someone from here who is taking a no-interest, Charles T. King loan. We are saying, that if you were not interested in taking an interest-free loan, we’re not going to be so eager to give you a grant.”

Sacks explained the importance of Booster grants helping families put together a financial package.

“These grants help reduce the amount of loans a student and his or her family are undertaking,” he said. “That takes on even greater importance should the House tax reform bill passed recently become law. It will have a devastating effect on the student’s ability to repay a loan with its elimination of the student loan interest deduction.

“Stafford loans you have to pay back, and if that bill becomes law, they will be even tougher to pay back since the interest won’t be deductible,” Sacks said. “The Charles T. King loan, with no interest, is a lot easier to pay back because of its liberal terms.

“It’s not going to make a difference whether you go to college or not, but it will ease the burden,” he concluded.

Thomas Edison’s West Orange Home Open For Holiday Tours

By Anya Bochman he Glenmont Estate in West Orange, built in 1880, had a less than illustrious start when its original owner, Henry Pedder, was jailed for embezzlement. According to Karen Sloat-Olsen, chief of Interpretation and Education at the Thomas Edison

National Historical Park, the house was subsequently put on the market. Thomas Edison, newly engaged to his second wife Mina Miller in 1886, saw the grand house for sale and bought it for his bride as a wedding present.

The 29-room mansion sits amid rolling lawns and includes

a barn and carriage house on the property. Miller Edison, as well as the Edison children, made renovations and additions to the estate over time; new greenhouses were erected on the grounds, and a garage – to accommodate Edison’s interest in cars – was added to the house.

Today, these sights are available to curious visitors; the greenhouses are functional and managed by volunteers, and the garage includes an original charging panel and gas pump for cars of the era – as well as automobiles owned

by Edison. The first and second floors of Glenmont Estate, which include original furnishings, are available for viewing.

The estate is part of the Thomas Edison National Historical Park in Llewellyn Park in West Orange, a site “dedicated to promoting an international understanding and apprecia-

tion of the life and extraordinary achievements of Thomas Alva Edison by preserving, protecting and interpreting the Park’s extensive historic artifact and archive collections.”

The property has been open for tours since October; starting on Nov. 24 through Jan. 7, the inventor’s home will undergo a special program called “Holidays at Glenmont.”

During this period, Glenmont Estate will be decorated in the style it saw when inhabited by the Edison family.

Selected musical pieces will accompany tours, with greenery and red poinsettias decking the mantles above the fireplaces.

Staircases will be ringed with boughs and red ribbons, with wreaths decorating every window.

Sloat-Olsen points out that Llewellyn Park is a private residential community – necessitating the car passes in order to get to the Edison residence.

Refurbishing the fields is not a new idea. Kerkorian says that it had popped up about a year and half ago, but she is quick to tell how it was embraced by so many.

“It’s all about helping the community and the players,” she enthuses.

While she anticipates seeing all of the improvements and upgrades to the field, the moment that stands out in her mind the most was when the club presented the check to the school board to benefit the

kids.

“It was just amazing,” she says.

The purpose of the Millburn Diamond Club is to actively support and financially assist the Millburn High School Boy’s Baseball team. It seeks to assist the varsity, junior varsity and freshmen teams by enhancing the athletic experience for all.

Warm and passionate on the subject of baseball and the project, Kirkorian says that she became interested in improving the fields because she was concerned about “the safety of the players.”

For example she shares that the renovations—especially the ones to the dugouts-- will provide shelter for both the

players and the equipment, when they need it.

She also mentions that the donation will provide baseball backstop netting equipment, which she says will be much safer for catchers on the baseball team so that they won’t be injured as easily.

For Kirkorian and the other Millburn Baseball Families, this is truly a labor of love. She describes how everyone agreed that the fields previously were quite old and “not really up to par.”

Components of the holiday season such as decorating, shopping, celebrating, and traveling, carry some risk. The National Fire Protection Association says 30 percent of all home fires occur during the months of December, January and February. Christmas trees and decorative holiday lighting displays contribute to the uptick in fires and other accidents between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. But fire is not the only concern during the holiday season. Revelers who celebrate a bit too much can pose a threat, as can road weary travelers or overnight guests who unknowingly put loved ones in harm’s way during their stays.

Thankfully, many accidents that occur during the holiday season are avoidable if holiday celebrants focus on safe ways to celebrate.

• Choking: All of that entertaining and partying means more food is consumed.

the season, many people must eat on the go. The National Safety Council says nearly 3,000 people in the United States die each year from choking. Taking small bites and chewing completely, while also avoiding talking while chewing, can help. Children should be kept away from small decorations, as even pine needles can be a choking hazard.

• Toxic plants: Some plants, including mistletoe and holly, can be toxic to pets and young children whose smaller bodies may be more vulnerable than adults’.

When decorating, consider decorating with artificial plants instead of live, potentially poisonous plants.

• Alcohol-related incidents: Holiday fun frequently involves alcoholic beverages. Law enforcement officials point out that the rate of driving while intoxicated tends to increase during the holidays. Implementing strict “designated driver” rules and making contact information for taxi or ridesharing services readily available to holiday guests can prevent tragedies.

But blended families need not fret as they attempt to negotiate Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, or New Years.

Logistics The first step to holiday planning is to keep in mind predetermined custody or visitation agreements. Although there can be hope for holiday flexibility and generosity, try to stick as close to existing arrangements as possible. Some families choose to divvy up particular holidays throughout the year in advance. Others may do it as plans get arranged. rnav Sharma, a 6th grader from Short Hills, has been awarded a Disney Summer of Service grant through Youth Service America. The grant will support Sharma in leading a community service project that addresses the issue of promoting science, technology, engineering and math among elementary school students.
