Welcome to our 2022-2023 Schools Outreach Programme
Welcome to Newham Sixth Form College’s comprehensive Schools Outreach Programme. We offer an exciting selection of curriculum and progression events for pupils in Years 9 - 11 to help broaden their understanding of various career opportunities and pathways available to them through highly interactive and practical sessions.
Our sessions directly link to key Gatsby benchmarks to assist pupils in making well-informed decisions about their post-16 studies through insightful and informative events with teaching experts, employers and current students.
As part of our collaborative and partnership work with schools, we are also offering a series of professional staff orientated sessions to support curriculum delivery and promote continuous professional development in education. We are excited to work closely with you in bringing this programme to your students to enrich their learning, support their careers research and develop their skills during their post-16 transition phase.

Our aim:
Our wide range of IAG events and activities are designed to offer students a greater insight into subjects, course programmes and career progression opportunities. The sessions are aimed to inspire, support and encourage them to make well-informed decisions about their Post-16 studies.

Foundation Learning: Entry and Level 1

Our tailored Entry and Level 1 sessions are aimed at students with mild, moderate and severe learning difficulties and disabilities, or those looking to achieve GCSE grades 1-2. These sessions aim to support students in their research into Post-16 options and give them a chance to meet with Course Tutors, Learning Support Practitioners and current students.
Entry Level students will have the opportunity to attend subject tasters to give them an interactive introduction into key topics learnt throughout entry level programmes. Parents are welcome to attend to find out more about the range of programmes and support provision on offer.

STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths

Our range of STEM workshops and masterclasses aim to inspire and challenge students academically and stretch their abilities whilst giving them a broader understanding of the STEM industry and rewarding careers. Students will also gain insights into subjects through highly interactive sessions to aid their learning and skills development.
Our Girls in STEM sessions challenge stereotypical myths relating to the industry and aim to inspire young female learners to pursue the study of STEM related subjects Post-16. Students will also have the opportunity to use industry standard equipment and gain a real hands-on experience of working in the industry. The sessions below can be booked for Girls in STEM.

Cryptography in Cyberspace

In this practical computer science session, students will learn what encryption and cryptography means and how this is used to keep data safe. Students will then work on an interactive tool that can help solve Caesar and substitution cyphers using common letter frequencies. Students will also gain an insight into rewarding careers in tech.

Engineering and Construction Workshop

This hands-on and practical session is designed to challenge students’ logic and aptitude for mechanics, construction and electronics work. Students will use mechanical and electronic tools in industry-standard labs to manufacture products using different engineering techniques. Students will also gain an insight into related careers within the engineering and construction industry.

This masterclass is an introduction to ‘Renaissance Poetry’, focusing on the sonnets of ‘Wyatt’ and ‘Shakespeare’ in preparation for studying AQA English Literature. The most useful part of the sessions were the visits to King’s College as this provided an insight into undertaking the subject further at this leading university. Thus my ambition was strengthened as the senior lecturers posed the several programmes offered in relation to Classical Civilisations.

Honours Session: Academic Writing for Critical Thinkers

This session is suitable for high achievers and students aiming for 6 and above in their final GCSEs. The session will allow students to broaden their academic writing skills through critical analysis of different extracts. Students will be able to share their perspectives and delve into their inquisitive minds, whilst focusing on developing their higher level analytical and critical thinking skills.

The creative industry was generating over £91.8bn a year at its’ peak and expanding faster than the rest of the UK economy. With the recent changes in the job market, the industry is once again providing new opportunities for aspiring performers and creative thinkers alike.
These sessions allow students to tap into their creative talents to produce digital work, perform on stage and use their artistic flair to support their skills development and broaden their creative thinking.
Students will also have the opportunity to use industry standard equipment to gain a real hands-on experience of working within the industry and discover related career opportunities within the field.

STEM Programme
STEM Enthuse Partnerships
Newham Sixth Form College has joined with STEM Learning, the UK’s largest provider of education and careers support in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to lead a new STEM Enthuse Partnership Programme for local schools in Newham.
We are proud to have partnered with Newham schools Langdon Academy, Plashet School, Cumberland School, Kaizen Primary and Ellen Wilkinson Primary to improve young people’s engagement in STEM subjects and develop greater awareness and understanding of STEM related careers.
This exciting new initiative will consist of a range of highly interactive workshops with industry professionals and specialists, including STEM ambassador visits from the London STEM Ambassadors Hub, the development of STEM Clubs and off-site trips to raise their aspirations and support their understanding of related careers and progression.
The programme also offers a wide range of STEM-related CPD opportunities for staff to develop their expertise to support curriculum delivery. This includes off-site training days, industry placements, webinars and conferences.
