Nest cable ferry ramp – Part of the Crown Waterway of the Myall River The Licence contains a number of provisions relating to costs incurred by the Lessee and limitations on the use of the premises.

This is one of many Sections that relate directly to concerns expressed particularly

by The Myall Coast Historical Society: The Holder will not undertake any development within the meaning of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 contrary to or in breach of ...an Environmental Planning Instrument or condition of a development consent.

Midcoast Council does have in force an Environmental Planning Instrument that applies to this situation. It is their Local Environmental Plan (LEP).

The regulations of the LEP concern the conservation of the environmental heritage of Great Lakes. They seek to conserve the heritage significance of heritage items and heritage conservation areas, including associated fabric, settings and views. The dumping of rock on The Old Ferry Ramp in question is what these regulations are trying to prevent.

Consent has to be given before an item is changed in any way or is likely to result in a relic being ...moved, damaged or destroyed.

Under the terms of their own LEP, Midcoast Council is supposed to consider the effect of the proposed development on

If Midcoast Council was informed that work was to be carried out on an item declared a heritage item under their LEP, they should have required a development consent even though the work had been licensed by Crown Lands.

If Council was not aware of the work being undertaken, Fisheries were in breach of their Licence.

It doesn’t seem possible to establish exactly what damage has been done to the Old Ferry Ramp because it appears that there has not been an accurate assessment of the state of the area before work commenced either by Council or Fisheries.

However, sufficient to say that the place currently looks sad and knocked about.

The old ramp is a much used fishing spot and with very little cost, the whole site could become an icon for the area. Instead of it being left with a layer of gravel dust and rock on it, the addition of some grass, a couple of seats and some signage indicating its place as a heritage site of which we could all be proud would turn a disgrace into a treasure.

The Myall Coast Historical Society was responsible for the repair of the site in 2007 and we would love to participate in its improvement now!

The Myall River VIEW Club meets on the second Friday of each month in Tea Gardens.

World Day of Prayer 2020 EVERY year, on the first Friday in March, over 150 countries in 88 different languages, join together to take part in a service of worship written by the women of a different country each year, using a particular theme based on the needs and circumstances of the local people.

This year, 2020, the Service is prepared and written by the women of Zimbabwe, and their focus for prayer is on poverty, unemployment, children with disabilities, and domestic violence.

The local Churches are taking part.

Each denomination takes turns to hold this event every year, and it is the turn of the Tea Gardens Uniting Church for 2020. While it used to be a Women's World Day of Prayer, both men and women now take active parts in this event.

Everyone is very welcome to attend the Uniting Church, 120 Myall St., Tea Gardens, on Friday, March 6 2020 at 2.30pm. Afternoon Tea will be provided after the service.

Sessions done for Tea Gardens region MIDCOAST Council’s land-use planners are encouraging locals to “know your zone” with a series of drop-in sessions across the region kicking off in Hawks Nest and Bulahdelah last week.

The drop-in sessions are part of a check-in consultation designed to help people understand what zones currently apply to where they live, shop, work and play, and to secure community feedback relating to proposed zoning changes in towns and villages.

Feedback collated in this phase will inform the development of draft plans, which will be placed on exhibition during a second phase, before being finalised and implemented.

“As a merged council, we currently have three sets of planning controls across the region which is confusing for everyone”, explained Paul De Szell, Council’s Director of Liveable Communities.

“Reviewing our urban zones is one part of a much larger project to streamline our planning controls, and contemporise them at the same time so they cater for our communities into the future”.

Rural zones will be addressed in a separate consultation later this year.

Changes being proposed for urban zones range from a simple name change for region-wide consistency, or rezoning to align with current and future land uses, through to increased building heights that encourage vibrancy and development in larger centres.

While not all zones are changing, locals are reminded that planning controls directly impact what an area looks like, what activities can be undertaken, and the type of buildings the neighbours can construct next door.

Effective zoning also avoids

mixing incompatible land uses, like a pre-school next to a pub, and maintains local character by ensuring consistency of building structures.

THE most spectacular of all the Anasazi Villages is called the Cliff Palace .It is situated in a huge cave located high up on the Mesa Verde in the south west of Utah State , USA. The alcove upon which it is constructed is 215 feet wide , 90 feet deep into the cave & some 60 feet high, being the highest towers on their dwellings. This Palace contains some 150 rooms with 75 open areas : 21 Kivas plus 2 Kivalike structures.

The construction period is estimated to be AD1190 to AD 1280 which was just before the whole nation disappeared around AD 1300. It is suggested that up to 120 people might have lived in this structure, housing an extended family of say three generations of the same bloodline.

Self Help Slimmers Club formed here in Tea Gardens twelve years ago with Ellen Foulstone and Sandra Meade still very much involved with running the Club today.

SELF Help Slimmers Club formed here in Tea Gardens twelve years ago with Ellen Foulstone and Sandra Meade still very much involved with running the Club today.

“During the years our numbers have fluctuated as have our weights. We are not a miracle group but we are here to support each other swapping recipes, talking about food labels and portion control, we encourage homing pigeons when things get bad, ” Ellen Foulstone said.

Sandra Meade told News Of The Area, “Everyone is welcome. We have both men

and women join the group, and at the weekly weigh-in we have had some great success stories over the years with substantial weight losses.”

Both Ellen and Sandra agreed, “The key to success is portion control, exercise and leading a happy and healthy life. It’s not easy to lose weight remember you didn’t gain all your weight in one day so you won’t lose it in one day either, be patient with yourself.”

The Self Help Slimmers Club meets at the local Country Club in Tea Gardens at five o’clock on a Thursday night and also holds functions throughout the year.

Promoting our Region Barrington Coast MIDCOAST Council’s Barrington Coast team is partnering with Tourism Australia to urge tourists to ‘Holiday Here This Year’.

In the wake of the devastating bushfire and drought crisis that’s gripping parts of the country, Tourism Australia launched their Holiday Here campaign to urge tourists – particularly Australians – to travel within Australia this year and help support fire and drought affected areas to get back on their feet.

The MidCoast was one of the first areas to be hit hard by the fires between September and November and large parts of the region have been drought stricken for more than 12 months, so never has it been more important to encourage tourism to the area.

“We’re inviting holidaymakers from across Australia to be inspired by the beautiful countryside and breathtaking

coastline of the Barrington Coast, revisit an old favourite spot or uncover somewhere completely new,” said Deb Tuckerman, Council’s Manager of Growth, Economic Development and Tourism.

“We are among the first to jump aboard this initiative with our social media campaign starting the same day that the $20 million Tourism Australia campaign was announced. Our posts have already been picked up and shared by Tourism Australia and Visit NSW, reaching thousands of potential visitors.”

Council is also urging local business owners and residents to jump on board with the campaign and capitalise on the exposure opportunities by tagging and promoting themselves on social media.

support those communities that have been directly and indirectly affected by the fires and drought.

“Over the coming months we’ll be showcasing experiences and regions from across the Barrington Coast to help holidaymakers decide that now more than ever, ‘I’m going to holiday here this year’.”

Lions Club strong local focus for 2020

Progress Report

By Gordon GRAINGER THE Progress Association (PA) met on Monday 10th Feb and was addressed by Kirk Dahle, Manager Marine Estate Oyster Reef Rehab, Fisheries. Kirk manages a new project studying the production of oyster spat within Port Stephens and the establishment of two artificial reefs, one at Limekilns and the second near Karuah. The sites chosen were selected on the basis of no impact on boating traffic and influences

from the Myall and Karuah rivers. Oysters are an integral inhabitant of estuarine marine environment, providing a filtration system on the water column and in turn an attractant for many fish species. Studies have shown a single oyster filters 50 litres of water each day.

The Limekiln project has been completed using 1000 tonnes of rock, mixed with crushed oyster shell and the Karuah deposit will begin in a few weeks. The rock has been stored on the old ferry ramp, causing consternation to the Historical Society and recreational fishers. Kirk has realised there was a lack of consultation with the community and has apologised on behalf of Fisheries. He will provide an update on the study findings to the Assn in 12 months.

(phew) The meeting discussed many other issues and of particular interest we can list the following. · The Myall Art Expo held in January proved to be very successful and will be held again next year. · The unit development on the corner of Booner and Yamba St has been rejected

by Council and John Williams reported that progress is being made on a 2nd exit from Spinifex Av into Myall St. · The community reaction to the upgrade of the Tea Gardens police station has been negative to say the least. We understand that senior police will arrange a community meeting in the near future. · The community radio is now incorporated and has begun test transmissions on 87.8 FM. The transmitter is located above the Benchmark in Hawks Nest and the Committee is investigating various sites for the studio.

· Council have recommended community groups provide input to a Community Plan for Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens. This Plan will assist Grant applications and will also help the Council identify priorities for work and improvement in our area. The PA is facilitating input from Community Groups for the Community Plan. · The PA has formulated action plans for 2020, which include a community survey on issues you would like to see addressed through the Reference Group.

We will pursue the proposed bike track behind the industrial estate and to bring fruition the outstanding issues from 2019.

The next meeting will be held Monday 9th March at the Uniting Church. All welcome to participate and join the Assn. should you feel you can contribute to this community’s well-being.

Top marks to our greenkeeper, Steve Green, in getting the grass green ready for play.

Today we had 48 bowlers in the nominated triples and 3 teams playing catch up matches in the Minor Pairs so a good rollup of members.

The winners on the grass were no surprise, they were; Lance Atkins, Ron Green and Greg Pearson.

Graeme Watkins, Bill Thrift and Keith Smith took the money on the synthetic.

The Luck losers were; John Payne, Col Amos and Mark Hair.

I do not have the results of the Minor Pairs games, but I am aware that one team is through to the final and another 2 teams yet to complete their semi-final

This competition has been plagued with interruptions, first though excessive heat and then the rain.

15 February: The first round of the Club Minor Singles was played today with Neil Kibble winning over Bill Heylbut, Dave Garcia having a great win over Alan Greenhalgh, and Dave Perry accounting for Tony Coomer.

16 February: With the draw now filling up 7 teams contested the second round of the Club Minor Singles.

In the remaining game, another rookie, John (“flapper”), Payne thought his orange shoelaces might

put Garry Wynne off and he took the game right up to Garry giving him a real scare.

Experience told in the end with Gary winning 3128.

There are some great matchups in the next round and there is sure to be some exceptional bowls played.

By Sandra MURRAY TEA GARDENS local pool sparkled under a warm sunny 24 Celsius for the local primary school swimming carnival held 5 February.

The school principal, Mr Mark Clemson, told News Of The Area, “What I love about our swimming carnival structure is that it caters for both students who just want to have a go, as well as for students who would like to have the opportunity to participate in zone, regional and NSW Primary School Sports Association events.”

Student, teacher and parent house cheering was at an all-time high.

The school has four sports houses all named after local landmarks, Tomaree (red), Yacaaba (blue), Stephens (green) and Corrie (yellow).

Students selected to be either a fun participant or a serious competitor.

Participant’s swam lengths of the 25 metre pool with a noodle, in relays and in other fun events.

Competitors swam in two or more 50 metre lap events and were subject to placings and timings.

The school is competitively placed with 21 students progressing to compete in the Port Stephens

Zone swimming carnival on the 19 February.

At the end of the day, the Swimming Age Champions were Lily Fidden and Liam Mitchell (Juniors); Deena Clemson and Rory Ingram (11 years); and Karly Biffin and Sam Alchin (Seniors).

A wombat. Mmmmm. Well, of course your first thoughts were possibly the physical attributes of a wombat – do you have short broad feet, long incisors, and a stocky barrel shape? No? Ok, perhaps let’s not dwell on the wombat’s physical characteristics. Perhaps your husband was going a bit deeper.

Maybe he was referring to your eating habits. Do you graze for several hours after sunset? No? Are you vegan? No? Okay, let’s continue. Wombats are solitary creatures, so perhaps he meant the amount of time you like to spend alone, or maybe, when you are trying to warn him about something, it is in a low guttural growl. Do you hiss when angered?

Or, given it was Valentine’s Day, maybe he was referring to other habits. Do you attack him for 30 minutes before you mate?

Do you consummate your relationship on your sides? Does the courtship phase involve him chasing you in wide circles and then biting your rump?

Look, Mrs KD, I think we both may be overthinking this. I certainly am. Let’s just assume that he thinks you are cute and cuddly. That you were an ‘accidental hero’ during the bushfires, provided a safe space for others when they had no home.

That you don’t mind the occasional tummy rub, and that you are also highly intelligent (true wombat fact).

Held in the idyllic bushland setting at Myall River Camp, Mungo Brush Road, Hawks Nest with grassy unpowered sites, plenty of shade with local wildlife: dolphins, wallabies, pelicans, mud crabs, possums, sea turtles and a spectacular array of birds it is surely the place to be this weekend.

Cheryl Cairns from Myall River Camp told News Of The Area, " Extend A Cup’s purpose is to have an enjoyable weekend and raise funds for a charity, it is completely not for profit, at the same time it involves a fishing competition, raffles and fun auctions."

Fishing Award Categories include Land Based, Boat Outside, Boat Inside and Overall Champion Angler.

After a fun filled, family orientated fishing day Saturday includes the Trophy Presentation, Live Entertainment with the all-important Raffle Draw and Auction starting at 2.00pm.
