The GiG has outdone their usual summer themed exhibitions with this one, which was sparked by an ABC story about Allison Reynolds, Director of the Space Gallery in Coonabarabran, who had snagged a ninemetre long Reg Mombassa inflatable sculpture at an online auction.

“With her Space Gallery exhibition wrapping up, Allison thought, ‘Why not let another gallery have some fun with this iconic piece?’,” GiG’s exhibition organiser Ian Morphett told News Of The Area.

“So, Galleries in the Gardens jumped at the chance and borrowed the sculpture for a couple of months.”

Ian connected the dots from Reg Mombassa (real name Chris O’Doherty), who created many of the Mambo surfwear designs, to Cuba - the home of mambo dance and music.

That led to a Cuban-themed opening gala.

“We decided to have a Mambo music theme for our event, as well as iconic Cuban food and drink at the opening,” Ian said.

as does the autographed Reg Mombassa raffle prize.

The proceeds will go to the local RFS brigade.

Member artists were asked to incorporate themes related to either Mambo, Reg Mombassa, Cuba or the Myall Coast.

Coincidentally, judge Alita Knaggs from Nelson Bay attended the Alexander Mackie School of Art at the same time as Reg Mombassa.

Alita’s comments about the winning pieces were as vibrant and varied as the artworks.

When the vehicle allegedly failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated.

The vehicle allegedly continued towards Karuah where road spikes were deployed, however the pursuit was terminated due to safety

concerns.

A short time later officers attached to Operation Soteria observed the vehicle travelling north along the Pacific Highway, Tea Gardens.

Police will allege the vehicle crashed into a median strip before stopping near Nabiac.

The vehicle then allegedly conducted a U-turn and crashed into two marked police vehicles.

The vehicle continued travelling northbound before road spikes were successfully deployed and the vehicle stopped after crashing into a road sign.

Four occupants allegedly ran from the scene, however were arrested a short distance away.

They were taken to Taree Police Station where the driver – a 15-year-old boy – was charged with “police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously” and “drive conveyance taken without consent of owner”.

He was refused bail and appeared at Parramatta Bail Division Court on Tuesday 9 December, where he was granted bail to appear before a children’s court on Tuesday 16 December.

The passengers – aged 11, 13 and 14 - were charged with “be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner”.

The 13-year-old boy was refused bail and appeared before Parramatta Bail Division Court on Tuesday 9 December, where he was formally granted conditional bail to appear before a children’s court on Thursday 11 December 2025.

One issue which often faces firefighters is finding somewhere to refill their tankers with water, but on this occasion they were helped enormously by a good Samaritan by the name of Wayne Grey from Booral.

born and bred, runs Grey’s Earthmoving which as part of its business for the last 10 years has carted water in its two 10,000 litre tankers.

Wayne, who was joined by his brother Trevor and son Nathan, had no hesitation in offering his services to help the many other volunteers on the fire ground.

Early start for shark spotting drones SURF Life Saving drones will be in the air earlier and for longer this summer as the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) steps up shark surveillance.

The NSW Government has allocated an extra $2.5m for shark management following the recent deaths of a female tourist near Crowdy Bay and a local surfer on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

Through the DPI, Surf Life Saving NSW (SLSNSW) has delivered shark surveillance across the state for nearly a decade. This year, sweeps of 33 beaches were set to start a week early, on 13 December.

The Hunter and Mid North Coast beaches to have earlier drone surveillance are Fingal Rovers, South West Rocks, Crescent Head, Town Beach Port Macquarie, Lighthouse Beach Port Macquarie, Forster, Fingal Beach, Nobbys and Redhead.

From 20 December, they will be joined by Sawtell, Urunga, Scotts Head, Black Head, Cape Hawke, Tea Gardens Hawks Nest and Birubi Point, which are among the 50 beaches to have daily drone patrols until the end of January.

As part of the increased funding, weekend patrols will then continue at all 50

beaches until 29 March.

SLSNSW CEO Steve Pearce said, “Last summer alone, 50 locations from Tweed to Bega were covered, with drones completing 18,027 flights over 4897 flying hours.

“During that time, 815 sharks were sighted including 41 bull sharks, 45 white sharks and 729 unknown sharks.

“Our lifeguards and lifesavers enacted 115 preventions, including 88 beach evacuations, plus other counter-measures including beach sirens, drone sirens, and tasking Inflatable Rescue Boats (IRBs) and jet skis.”

More than 100 Australian Unarmed Aerial Vehicle pilots (UAVs) will operate the drones.

“Our incredibly talented and highly skilled team is well-placed to deliver a greater scope of service for this summer,” said AUAVS Manager James Bassam.

“To pull together a comprehensive rollout of drone patrols earlier than scheduled, all while pushing boundaries with new innovations and projects, is why Surf Life Saving NSW leads the way in this space.”

Moriarty, said drones have proven to be an effective eye in the sky when it comes to early shark detection and warning beach users.

“This enhancement package is another important step forward in using and expanding their potential along our coastline,” she said.

“A better awareness of sharks and their behaviour can help us all enjoy the beach and reduce the risk of shark interactions.”

As previously reported

by News Of The Area, shark bite trauma kits will also be installed on 67 SLSNSW Emergency Response Beacons, in mainly high-risk unpatrolled locations along the coastline.

The kits contain tourniquets, compression bandages and other first aid supplies to treat serious bite injuries, and were the inspiration of Danny Schouten, whose mate Kai McKenzie was attacked by a shark while surfing off Port Macquarie’s North Shore in 2024.

The new funding will also see an extensive community awareness and SharkSmart education program across social media and at coastal communities this summer to

The SharkSmart van and the trailer will both travel up and down the coast and do pop-up sessions at beaches to deliver information and

support to beachgoers.

To spread the word on safety even further, QRcoded ‘SharkSmart’ posters will be installed at beaches in every coastal LGA.

There will also be further modifications and improvements to the popular SharkSmart app to further enhance its useability and information for beach goers.

Yallarwah Park celebration

NORTH Arm Cove residents gathered to celebrate the completion of upgrades at Yallarwah Park and the official opening of the new potting shed at the Community Garden, held onsite on Friday, 5 December.

More than 40 locals attended, joined by neighbours from Carrington, creating a warm and energetic atmosphere under the gum trees.

Special guests included Port Stephens MP Kate Washington, representatives from MidCoast Council, and John Manton and Shawn Stowe of the Gummipingal Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation.

The celebration was organised by the North Arm Cove Community Association (NACCAi), led by President John Kugel and Vice President Terri Horton, who both contributed to the delivery of the grants that enabled the park and garden upgrades.

Mr Manton offered a Welcome to Country, which reflected on the enduring Aboriginal presence across the North Arm Cove landscape.

Mr Kugel then acknowledged the support of the NSW Government in funding the upgrades, including $90,606 through

the NSW Stronger Country Communities Fund for Yallarwah Park, and an additional $14,000 via the Community Building Partnership program for the community garden potting shed.

A formal ribbon cutting preceded a chance for guests to explore the garden and its growing produce before returning to Yallarwah Park.

Many took the chance to walk the new 260-metre loop path, try out the exercise stations, and read the interpretive signage, which tells the story of Yallarwah’s cultural heritage, environmental values, and history.

“The celebration recognised not just the upgrades themselves, but the volunteers and community leaders who made them possible,” Mr Kugel said.

“Former NACCAI Presidents Bob Reid and Doug Kohlhoff, both of whom played critical roles in securing the initial Yallarwah grant, should be acknowledged for their ongoing dedication to the village.

“These upgrades will continue to bring people together, encourage healthy outdoor activity, and strengthen the resilience of the Cove for many years to come.”

Mr Kohlhoff, who was President of NACCAi at the time of the original Yallarwah Park project, told NOTA, “I called the project ‘Give us a Heart’, but as I noted also, our village's true heart is also found in the generosity, empathy and community spirit of its inhabitants.

“The Community Hall, the Tennis Court, the Community Garden, Yallarwah – these are places where the true heart of our village can beat.”

Mr Kohlhoff said the seeds for the park project were sown in mid-2014, when the Rural Fire Service was assessing what could be done to make the North Arm Cove community safer from bushfire risk.

Suggestions included a “massive reduction” in the number of trees opposite the hall.

“I walked across the road and stood amongst those tall trees thinking that it would be sad to see them chopped down,” Mr Kohlhoff said.

“They were homes to so many birds. “[I thought] if most of these trees really did need to go, then this area absolutely must become community land.”

“After consulting the local Aboriginal Land Council, ‘Yallarwah’ seemed a great choice: a place to rest, a place of recreation and rejuvenation,” Mr Kohlhoff said.

Members of state and local government were at the celebration this month, with Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington invited to speak about the road so far.

“I've just been on this journey with you (the community) for some time and just to see what is now

here is so impressive,” she said.

“It just speaks to how beautiful and strong and connected this community is – it's a bit of a rarity these days.

“What you have here is really, really quite unique and very, very special, and it does take work from hard-working people.

“I know that we'll keep walking this journey together because there are next steps that obviously need to happen.”

Council raises alarm after flood grants denied FOLLOWING the record-breaking floods which hammered the region in May, impacted residents were instructed by the NSW Government’s Reconstruction Authority to apply for Disaster Relief Grants.

According to MidCoast Council, the Authority is now refusing some grant applications due to homes being classified as within a flood zone.

Council says this is despite the Authority “working closely for months with the residents” to assist with applications.

“I am astounded and dismayed that financially vulnerable people who are without safe and appropriate housing following the floods, and who have spent the last six months dealing with these dire issues, are now being told they are not eligible for the grants they were told to apply for because they are in a flood zone,” said MidCoast Mayor Claire Pontin.

Other residents, the Mayor said, are being denied access to grants because they do not have a Certificate of Occupancy.

“The houses built in Wingham and Taree flood zones were built last century prior to modern planning laws, before the advent of Certificates of Occupancy, and prior to flood zone restrictions,” Mayor Pontin said.

According to Council, residents have been advised they now need to apply for a Home Repairs Grant that provides a maximum of just $25,000 and has stricter limitations.

In lieu of Certificates of Occupancy, Council can issue alternate documentation.

“Within days of the flood I was asking the State Government to provide funds

for house buy-backs to get these people out of the flood zone, as occurred in Lismore following their 2022 floods, but I was told that money was not available for that,” Mayor Pontin said.

“This is not good enough for our residents, who, nearly seven months on, are still waiting to be able to provide their families with a safe, liveable house.

“Many of these homes have interiors that were completely destroyed, and $25,000, even if approved, will not go far.

“These people are in despair.”

Flood recovery work continues on roads and bridges THE May 2025 flood resulted in over 28,000 defects to the MidCoast road network, with Council crews and contractors continuing flood recovery works.

Assessment of 680 bridges, 1,800km of unsealed roads and 1,800km of sealed roads has been undertaken so far.

Approximately $34m of emergency works and immediate reconstruction works have been completed to date.

It is estimated that a further $18m will have been undertaken by the end of December.

General Manager Adrian Panuccio said that the recovery efforts are ongoing and will take a number of years to fully complete.

“While we had funds available for emergency works, we need to work with the NSW Reconstruction Authority to seek funding for the many major road and bridge repairs still needed across our community,” said Mr Panuccio.

“The funding requirements are strict and we need to prove the damage

we claim is flood related.

“A big help in achieving this is the AI camera technology we’ve been using on recycling collection trucks.

“This means that wherever those trucks travel, we have clear records of road conditions before and after the May 2025 flood.”

Council crews have done an initial clean up and worked to restore access to properties.

This included clearing landslip debris, repairing bridge approaches, clearing vegetation and sediment, unblocking culverts and stormwater pipes, repairing potholes and causeways and grading unsealed roads.

Discussions are underway with the NSW Reconstruction Authority on eligible designs and alignments for the Bight, Tiri and Mt Coxcomb bridges.

Final repairs are underway for Wilsons bridge, while Tibbuc (Fordhams) Creek Bridge has been load limited pending design options for repairs or replacement of the bridge, subject to funding.

Currently a total of 41 other bridges have been

identified for further repairs, with a further 116 still under assessment.

To date 55 roadside land slips have been identified with further assessments underway.

Current estimates indicate a total cost of $62m for reconstruction of the currently identified slips.

Council anticipates that further slips will be discovered following a detailed assessment of road damage.

These flood recovery works are funded by Federal Government Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Overall, damage assessments of sealed roads indicate that two percent of the MidCoast network is severely impacted and 26 percent has had moderate impact.

Council is seeking flood recovery funding for the damaged sections of road.

Council has now had funding approval for a significant number of unsealed roads and has been maximising the repair works up to the Christmas break.

Rangers will be ‘out in force’ MIDCOAST Council says rangers will be “out in force” during the holiday period, with a focus on illegal parking, driving on beaches without a permit, illegal camping and rubbish dumping.

“While we want to welcome visitors, we also have a responsibility to our local communities and our environment,” said Director of Liveable Communities, Paul De Szell.

“We’ve increased the size of our ranger team and will be collaborating with NSW Police and the National Parks and Wildlife Service on enforcement activities.

“The rules around parking, camping and beach use are there to make the holidays safer and easier for all.”

Rangers will be targeting illegal overnight camping especially in Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens, Seal Rocks, Crowdy Head and Harrington areas.

Visitors to the area are encouraged to book their accommodation well ahead of time to avoid disappointment.

Failure to find accommodation is not an acceptable reason for illegal camping.

Visitors should also check parking and beach signage and comply with local regulations.

Seal Rocks only has capacity for approximately 110 cars, which usually fills up early in the morning.

In past years, illegal parking has created traffic chaos, including roadblocks that compromise access for emergency services and waste collection.

Day trippers are encouraged to consider their holiday plans and seek out the range of inland experiences that are available across the Barrington Coast.

There are a number of areas in Seal Rocks that are ‘no stopping’ zones and there is no parking from 10pm to 5am along Number One Beach to help prevent illegal camping.

Mr De Szell explained that Seal Rocks is surrounded by the Myall Lakes National Park, so Council does not

have the land to increase parking and road capacity.

Beach patrols are already underway, targeting drivers who do not have a permit or who do not comply with rules.

Anyone planning to drive on a beach should check out www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au/ beach-driving.

The introduction of number plate recognition technology since the last Christmas period has resulted in Council rangers being able to be more effective when undertaking proactive parking patrols.

“Our vehicles fitted with this technology will be used to maximise coverage of high traffic tourist areas such as Forster and Seal Rocks and our rangers will be out and about at all times of the day, all days of the week, so those parking or camping illegally will be caught out,” Mr De Szell warned Council will also implement signage at various locations such as Seal Rocks and Jimmys Beach to ensure the rules are clear.

Smelter's future secured but cost to taxpayers unclear

MORE than 1000 jobs at a troubled aluminium smelter are secure after the federal government confirmed it would keep the site running with taxpayer support.

of the massive Tomago smelter, had for months been threatening to shut down the plant due to spiralling energy costs after 2028, when its electricity contract runs out.

But on Friday, the government announced it had come to an agreement with the minerals giant to

keep Tomago powered with cheap renewable energy underwritten by the taxpayer.

"This is so important for our national interest," Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said as he announced the deal.

economy, and we need to make sure that we do make more things here."

The full details of the arrangements are yet to be revealed but will involve the Commonwealth entering into fixed-price power purchasing agreements and providing concessional finance to accelerate building of renewable energy generation, storage and transmission projects.

The total cost has yet to be agreed and negotiations would continue, Industry Minister Tim Ayres said.

Tomago Aluminium will contribute at least $1 billion to upgrade and maintain the facility in the next decade, including identifying opportunities to further decarbonise the smelter.

What role the NSW government would play in the rescue package was yet to be agreed.

Mr Albanese met with Premier Chris Minns on Thursday to discuss the arrangements, but a NSW government spokesperson could not confirm whether the state would contribute any funding.

Tomago produces more than a third of Australia's aluminium and is the single largest electricity user in the

nation.

Electricity makes up 40 percent of operating costs at Tomago, which began operating in 1983 and produces up to 590,000 tonnes of aluminium a year.

The Australian Workers' Union said it was a pivotal moment for Australian manufacturing.

"For months, we've been saying that Tomago isn't just another industrial site. It's the test case for whether Australia is serious about having a manufacturing future," AWU national secretary Paul Farrow said.

Tomago Aluminium chief executive Jerome Dozol said he was grateful to the federal and NSW governments for their commitment to working to address the energy challenges.

The progress reflected years of collaborative work to address "one of the most complex energy challenges facing Australian industry", Rio Tinto chief executive Simon Trott said.

adviser Annika Reynolds said.

The announcement comes after the federal government has struck a flurry of deals to keep smelters running across the nation as rising energy costs threaten their sustainability.

In October, the federal and Queensland governments agreed on a $600 million joint support package for a copper smelter in Mt Isa. A few months earlier, the Commonwealth, South Australian and Tasmanian governments stumped up $135 million in taxpayer funds to keep Nyrstar's lead and zinc smelters operating, with part of the funding going to expand production into critical minerals such as antimony.

Labor's decision to bail out Tomago was a clear admission it had failed to deliver cheap and reliable energy, the coalition said.

"The government cannot keep hiding the bill," Opposition Leader Sussan Ley said in a joint statement with industry spokesman Alex Hawke and energy spokesman Dan Tehan.

"They must front up and explain to Australians how much of their money is being used in failed attempts to mop up Labor's energy failures."

Tributes flow for firefighter TRIBUTES have flowed for John Lohan, 59, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) firefighter who lost his life protecting the townships of Bulahdelah and Nerong.

In a statement to social media, the NPWS said Mr Lohan was a “treasured and long-serving staff member” who was based at the service’s Lake Munmorah depot for almost 30 years.

“John was an experienced firefighter who was deployed to fires across the state and was working as a Divisional Commander,” the NPWS said.

“He lost his life while undertaking a critical leadership role on the fireground, ensuring the safety of his firefighters and the community.”

MidCoast Council Mayor Claire Pontin honoured Mr Lohan’s sacrifice during council’s 10 December meeting.

“I want to start by acknowledging the tragic death of the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services firefighter who lost his life on Sunday while working on the backburning operation for the Bulahdelah fires,” she said.

“The man was a veteran

field officer and experienced firefighter who began his career with the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Services in 1996.”

In the wake of his passing, Mr Lohan’s family has provided the following statement.

“We would like to thank the general public for their kind words, condolences and support during this difficult time.

“We are also deeply grateful to John’s coworkers for their compassion and strength, and we extend a heartfelt thank you to the men and women of the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

“Their ongoing contributions to our community often go unrecognised, and we truly value the role they play on the front line every day.

“The news of John’s passing has come as a profound shock to us all.

“John was a great father, loving brother, and wonderful friend to everyone who knew him.

“He will be greatly missed.

“We kindly ask that our family’s privacy be respected as we navigate this heartbreaking time.”

THE latest Bureau of Health Information report shows increased demand for hospital care and urgent surgery across the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD).

The quarterly report is based on the period between July - September 2025.

There were 108,152 presentations to emergency departments (EDs) across the district, which is 2174 fewer than in the same reporting period in 2024.

However, the number of patients presenting with triage category 2 cases (emergency) and category 3 (urgent) increased by 8.4 percent (1333) and 4.2

percent (1425) respectively.

These figures are the highest since BHI began reporting in 2010.

“Our frontline staff continue to deliver safe, high-quality care during a busy period with unplanned sickness and recruitment challenges,” HNELHD Chief Executive Tracey McCosker said.

“I can’t thank them enough for their dedication and collaboration, especially during the winter cold and flu season.

“The decrease in ED presentations for triage categories 4 (semi-urgent) and 5 (non-urgent), compared with the same

Record demand for urgent care and surgery quarter in 2024, is a positive sign that the community is accessing GPs or Healthdirect more regularly.

“We’re always looking at strategies to improve our facilities and patient experience.

“We continually monitor patient flow to identify those who can be safely discharged and return home as quickly as possible.”

During the quarter, 1883 urgent and 3194 semi-urgent surgeries were performed, an increase of 17.8 percent (285) and 25.8 percent (655) respectively, compared with the same quarter in 2024.

Ms McCosker said the increase in surgical activity

is a result of more efficient models of care and better collaboration with facilities.

“We continue to use some of our smaller hospitals, when appropriate, to ensure patients receive the care they need, or can be safely transferred closer to home to recover.

“The demand for urgent care continues to grow, and we’re working hard to reduce all waitlists and ensure timely access to surgery.”

NSW Nurses and Midwives Association General Secretary Shaye Candish, said the data demonstrates nurses and midwives are working increasingly harder with

limited resources.

“Triage one, two and three presentations in the ED have increased considerably this quarter, highlighting the rise in patient acuity our members experience on a daily basis,” he said.

"As our EDs get busier, staffing ratios will be crucial to keep both staff and patients safe and to ensure quality care can be provided.”

NSWNMA Assistant General Secretary Michael Whaites, said more investment in public healthcare was desperately needed.

“The BHI data shows there are still almost 95,000 patients on the elective

surgery waitlist.

“In order to bring these down permanently, we must see the federal government contribute more funding to the states - they can’t do it alone.”

Patients who feel their condition has deteriorated while awaiting surgery are encouraged to contact their treating doctor who can upgrade their urgency category if appropriate.

Marine Rescue volunteers return 800-plus boaters to safety MARINE Rescue NSW volunteers across the state returned 823 people safely to shore during November, completing more than 370 search and rescue missions including 108 emergency responses.

Acting Commissioner Todd Andrews said demand remains high for the volunteer service.

“Following successive record months in September and October, our volunteers were in high demand throughout November, completing 373 search and

rescue missions, just 18 fewer than the record set in 2022.

“We are seeing more boaters out on the water and expect those numbers to rise as we head into the summer holidays.

“Boaters need to ensure their vessel is well maintained, carry ample clean fuel, and always wear a lifejacket to avoid becoming a statistic,” he said.

On the Mid North Coast, 23 search and rescue missions were completed including 11 emergency

responses.

A total of 54 people safely were returned to shore across all nine Mid North Coast units – Woolgoolga, Coffs Harbour, Nambucca, Trial Bay, Lord Howe Island, Port Macquarie, Camden Haven, Crowdy Harrington and Forster Tuncurry.

In the Hunter and Central Coast region, 112 search and rescue missions including 29 emergency responses were completed, with 211 people safely returned to shore across Port Stephens, Lemon Tree Passage, Newcastle,

Lake Macquarie, Norah Head, Tuggerah Lakes, Brisbane Water and Terrigal units.

Statewide last month, 56 percent of responses were for engine, battery, and fuel issues, while crews also attended 22 groundings.

“Groundings are avoidable. Boaters must be aware of the tides, the environment, and conditions.

“If boating in an unfamiliar area, consult local charts and speak with the nearest Marine Rescue NSW unit before heading out,” Acting Commissioner Andrews said.

Marine Rescue NSW radio operators managed 17,566 calls in November and kept watch over 19,467 people on board Logged On vessels.

“Logging On is quick and simple and could save your life. Boaters can Log On 24/7 via the free Marine Rescue NSW app or VHF channel 16. Logging On ensures our skilled volunteers can monitor a boater’s safe return, and if they go overdue, a search will be initiated,” Acting Commissioner Andrews said.

TRANSPORT for NSW is encouraging motorists travelling on the Pacific Highway through Hexham to plan their trip and allow extra travel time during the Christmas New Year period, with high traffic volumes and delays expected.

The M1 Pacific Motorway at Beresfield and the Pacific Highway at Hexham are linked via John Renshaw Drive and the New England Highway, forming a major north-south route.

As a known pinch point, the busiest days for northbound traffic are predicted to be Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 December,

with expected delays of up to 30 minutes.

Southbound traffic is predicted to be heavy on Friday 2, 9 and 16 January with expected delays of up to 45 minutes.

Significant improvements have been made on the M1 Pacific Motorway and New England Highway since last summer, with noticeable changes in traffic flow.

However, speed limits remain reduced over the holiday period, even when work is paused for motorist safety.

Conditions may include narrow lanes, changed lane merges and altered traffic

configurations.

Work on the Hexham Straight Widening, M1 Pacific Motorway to Raymond Terrace, and Rankin Park to Jesmond projects will pause from Friday 19 December 2025 and resume Monday 5 January 2026.

NSW Police will enforce double demerit points for speeding, motorcycle helmet, seatbelt and mobile phone offences from Wednesday 24 December 2025 to Sunday 4 January 2026.

PEOPLE living in communities impacted by recent bushfires who require essential medicines, including diabetes, heart and asthma medicines, can now access a limited supply without a prescription at pharmacies.

NSW Health has issued an Authority under the Poisons and Therapeutic Goods legislation that enables pharmacists to supply prescription medicines to people without a prescription who are affected.

The temporary change is designed to assist people affected by bushfires, by ensuring they can continue to access essential medicines.

Branch of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Mario Barone said, “The activation of the PBS Continued Dispensing Emergency Measure ensures that patients affected by the bushfires can continue to access vital medicines without interruption.

“We thank the NSW Government and the Commonwealth for working with the Guild to deliver this urgent support, and we encourage all affected patients to reach out to their local pharmacy for assistance.”

The Authority commenced Monday 4 December and will end Sunday 4 January, unless extended.

Kids are nagging me for a real one, but I have a tree on the mezzanine that I can just drag down and decorate.

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose OCCASIONALLY something happens which reminds you of the anti-gambling punchline “sometimes you win but mostly you lose”.

Sadly, this has applied to my most recent overseas trip.

The holiday was really great but getting home proved a much more difficult task.

It has been many years since I last arrived in Australia via Brisbane then needed to transfer between international and domestic airports for the final flight to Williamtown.

So, like most travellers would, I went to Brisbane airport’s website for information on how this transfer works.

It should have been an easy transfer, but it became a nightmare situation.

Despite booking my seat eight months in advance, a comedy of errors - involving airline codesharing agreements - saw me without a seat for the final leg of my journey.

I will spare you all the details but here are some of the key points.

As we headed towards Brisbane, I filled in my arrivals card before a flight attendant told me I didn't need to complete it because I was only transiting Brisbane.

She then took my card and disposed of it; I guess she thought she was being helpful.

Going back to the tree, there are pros and cons of both options. Real trees look spectacular but they drop a lot of pine needles which means you're constantly sweeping. They

May I suggest that in the post-Christmas sales, you purchase a tree in a pot.

This will grow with your family, resolve the real/fake tree dilemma, and be far better from an organisational and environmental perspective for many years to come.

Christmas decorations steeped in history

HAVE you ever wondered why we decorate cone-bearing trees, eat turkey and ham, light candles, pull bonbons, hang Christmas stockings, decorate homes, make wreaths and credit Santa with delivering presents via flying reindeer?

Most of us know that many Christmas traditions from the Northern Hemisphere sailed south with immigrants.

But many so-called Christmas traditions originated from pagan rituals associated with the Winter Solstice, just before Christmas.

Burning Yule logs, present giving, decorating homes with holly, kissing under the mistletoe and making wreaths were activities designed to nurture new life, fertility, and promote peace and hope.

Before Clement Clark Moore wrote the poem “A Visit from St Nicholas” in 1822 and before Coca-Cola transformed Saint Nicholas into an extension of their brand, the 4th Century Bishop of Myra in Asia Minor was being revered for his kindness and generosity - especially to children and the needy.

As Christianity spread, the Greek Saint Nicholas evolved.

For centuries, the Dutch have celebrated Sinterklaas on 5 December, which is St Nicholas’s Names Day.

Traditionally children leave their shoes out in the hope they will find them filled with treats and presents in the morning.

In some regions of Italy, La Befana was believed to sort “the naughty” from “the nice” on 6 January.

Arriving by broomstick, she would fill stockings with presents for the good and lumps of coal for the naughty.

Latvia claims to be the birthplace of the first decorated Christmas Tree when, in 1510, a pine tree was erected in the Town Hall Square in Riga; a tradition that continues to this day.

Latvian children receive presents on Christmas Eve but only after they entertain the family with a song, a poem or a musical performance.

Before the discovery of the Americas, a Christmas fowl was usually a goose, a chicken or, for the wealthy, a peacock.

Turkey didn’t become a popular dish among the general population until the 19th Century, thanks to “A Christmas Carol” and Ebenezer Scrooge.

And what Christmas dinner would be complete without a potato dish.

For that we can thank the Spanish who brought this plant, native to the Andes, back to Europe in the 16th Century.

While originally bonbons were designed to hold treats in the French court, London confectioner Tom Smith adapted them to market his sugar almonds.

Special mention to those ladies whose carts were decorated in the Christmas spirit too.

By Shayne REYNOLDS WEDNESDAY afternoon saw a good roll up of keen smiling players ready for an invigorating game full of physical exercise and allimportant social interaction.

This week turned out to be a five-a-side game with a “floating sub player” who put on whatever colour vest they needed to fill in for a puffedout player or one that just felt like a rest, such is the relaxed

atmosphere that we all enjoy and feel fits "our stage in life" and where we all love to live.

A humid but shaded afternoon was punctuated by an intermittent breeze that promised.... then disappeared, and judging by the look of the players at the end of our two fifteen-minute halves and a follow-on 10 minute “play of you want to session" it could have delivered on its' promise and stayed on a bit longer to cool everyone down!

Twenty five of the club’s best young hopefuls demonstrated their athletic prowess at this year’s Port Hunter Zone Athletics Championships at Mallabula Sports Complex.
