Blues come through with bikes at Christmas THE Kendall Blues delivered three utes full of bicycles to Aussie Battlers in Laurieton on Saturday, 13 December, ready for distribution to local families.

It was the result of months of planning from the footy club, who launched the “Bikes For Kids” initiative earlier this year to support the work of the local charity.

The brainchild of club Vice President Troy Taylor, the initiative aimed to purchase brand-new bikes for local families facing financial hardship, ensuring more kids have a happy Christmas this year.

"Many families in our community are doing it tough, and a lot more than you would imagine,” Troy said.

"We are incredibly proud and humbled to have this opportunity to support our

Chamber calls for ‘decisive action’ to limit koala park impacts

THE Camden Haven Chamber of Commerce has called on the Premier to “take

decisive action” and uphold the NSW Government’s preelection commitment to

support the timber industry while developing the Great Koala National Park (GKNP).

IT’S 7.15am on Tuesday morning, 16 December, and cars are lined up behind the stop sign at the intersection of Houston Mitchell Drive and the Pacific Highway, as a work truck and other cars wait in the turning lane opposite, and semi-trailers and a cement truck fly past at 110kmph.

This is the nerve wracking morning commute for many Camden Haven and Port Macquarie residents - and it’s about to get worse.

The Bonny Hill Progress Association (BHPA) is reminding locals that the school holidays mean this intersection will be the entry and exit point for thousands of visitors, along with their convoy of camper trailers, motorhomes, caravans and boats.

“We just want to reach out to the community to remind them to be careful,” BHPA Vice President Kathy Regan told News Of The Area.

“We know it’s getting busier at the moment and a lot more traffic is turning in there.”

There have been no recent fatalities at the intersection, however Ms Regan regularly receives reports of accidents and near misses.

“Unfortunately, none of that information is considered data. The only time it [becomes] data is when police are called and the accident is registered.”

As NOTA reported in April, the state government has allocated half a million dollars towards long-term strategic planning and “short-term solutions” to improve safety

at the end of the dangerous “Ghost Road” - sonamed because of the lives it has claimed.

Options and concept designs were meant to be ready by the end of September, to go out to the community for feedback.

That hasn’t happened.

“All our efforts have been stalled,” Ms Regan said.

“We’ve had a great relationship with the [Regional Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison] in the past, but now we’re being told to wait.

“We’ve waited years.”

An overpass has long been acknowledged as the best solution for the busy intersection, with 16,000 people signing a petition that was tabled in State Parliament in September 2023.

At the same time the Minister helped cut the ribbon for the “all-but” completed Ocean Drive duplication, traffic at the Wrights Road and Oxley Highway intersection in Port Macquarie was at its usual crawl.

“We’re not trying to detract in any way from the importance of upgrading that intersection,” Ms Regan said.

“But Houston Mitchell Drive is a different type of intersection.

“It involves speed and heavy vehicles.”

Member for Port Macquarie Robert Dwyer told NOTA that he is actively pursuing meetings with the Minister and an update on the promised planning and safety upgrades.

“The important thing is to make sure we are not forgotten,” he said.

timber harvesting within it.

The move has impacted timber mills throughout the Mid North Coast and beyond, with significant job losses expected at the Pentarch Forestry mill at Herons Creek.

In a statement to media, the local Chamber of Commerce said it has been contacted by concerned members and businesses directly affected by the moratorium, as well as from those supplying goods and services that support the forestry industry.

President Luke Hadfield said the local business body recognises the “longstanding and important contribution of the timber industry to the economic development and prosperity of our region”.

“Our members recognise that the timber harvesting moratorium is causing wide ranging impacts on local business, employment and industry,” Mr Hadfield said.

“Many people have expressed frustration and anger, reporting that... the government has failed to consult them.

“They believe the community has been excluded from the process and the government has opted to focus on environmental lobby groups, rather than genuine grassroots engagement with the local community and business groups in tried and tested ways such as round tables and town hall meetings.”

Forestry industry leaders shared insights on the implications of the moratorium during a recent meeting with Chamber representatives.

Timber NSW CEO Maree McCaskill said the “ripple effect” will be devastating on communities.

“Skilled workers lose their jobs, and local economies suffer immediate and long-lasting consequences,” she said.

“However, the demand

for hardwood remains, forcing a reliance on imported timbers from countries with lower standards, both environmental and quality.

“These imports drive up the cost in all sectors of the economy, and no one is immune from these price hikes.”

Acknowledging environmental concerns, Ms McCaskill believes the industry can operate sustainably while “protecting the natural ecology of all animals, including koalas”.

“Supporting our industry means backing both the environment and jobs, and we can achieve both,” she said.

“Supporting timber doesn’t mean you’re against the environment or antikoala.”

Forest and Wood Communities Australia Chair Steve Dobbyns agreed, noting a level of misunderstanding among society about forestry methods.

“Many wrongly believe that all trees are cut down, leaving nothing behind,” he said.

“In reality, we carefully select trees for harvest, leaving much of the forest intact.

“Timber harvesting also protects communities by reducing forest fuel loads while also naturally storing carbon.”

With the moratorium having an immediate impact on local businesses, Ms McCaskill called out a lack of progress on the government’s promise to develop a Forestry Industry Action Plan (FIAP).

“We’ve had the Great Koala National Park announcement but we have no plan for the future of the industry,” she said.

In August 2024 the NSW Government announced the appointment of an “expert panel” to lead consultation on the FIAP, which will “outline the path NSW will

take to ensure a sustainable timber industry that aligns with the government's key environmental priorities”.

The panel is led by Peter Duncan AM, who is joined

by Professor Mary O’Kane AC and former Labor front bencher Mick Veitch.

Public submissions to the panel closed in October 2024.

Stakeholders meetings were initially held with a range of environmental groups and timber industry representatives, including Timber NSW, Australian Forest Products Association and major unions.

According to the NSW Government’s announcement, the FIAP will address the following key areas: Sustainability of current and future forestry operations in NSW; - Environmental and cultural values of forests, including threatened species; - Community demand for timber products, particularly as relates to NSW housing, construction, mining, transport and retail; - The future of softwood and hardwood plantations and the continuation of Private Native Forestry in helping meet timber supply needs; - The role of State Forests in maximising the delivery of a range of environmental, economic and social outcomes; - Opportunities to realise carbon and biodiversity benefits and support carbon and biodiversity markets, and mitigate and adapt to climate change risks; and Greenhouse gas emission impacts of different uses of forests and assessment of climate change risks to forests.

In response to questioning as to when the FIAP will be delivered, a NSW Government spokesperson told NOTA, “The NSW Government is committed to a sustainable forestry industry in NSW and is continuing to develop the Forestry Industry Action

Plan.

“The Independent Forestry Panel conducted widespread consultation with industry representatives and stakeholders on the mid and north coast and continues to provide advice, while the Government is continuing to meet with industry representatives.

“The Government will release the Action Plan when it is finalised.”

In a statement to media last week, Port Macquarie MP Robert Dwyer said the immediate focus must shift from redundancies and compensation to

a “North Coast Timber Manufacturing Revival Plan”, described as a “strategy that delivers on the Government’s environmental commitments while ensuring no net job losses across the

region”.

In terms of the Herons Creek mill, Mr Dwyer said he is working closely with Pentarch to try and secure government cooperation, including new supply arrangements.

Lake Cathie foreshore blueprint signed off

By Matt TAYLOR A LONG-TERM blueprint for the future of Lake Cathie’s foreshore has been signed off, after months of community consultation and public exhibition.

The decision was made at last week’s Port Macquarie-Hastings Council meeting, with councillors noting feedback received during the exhibition period and endorsing the final version of the plan as a longterm framework for future foreshore improvements.

The updated master plan replaces the original 2018 plan and is identified as a short-term priority in the council’s Recreation and Open Space Action Plan

2024–2029.

It is also referenced in the council’s delivery program under the Spaces and Places program to guide future recreational infrastructure planning.

Public consultation on the draft plan was carried out between 17 August and 14 September this year, following earlier engagement with the Lake Cathie community in April.

In total, 52 formal submissions were received, alongside more than 1800 visits to the project webpage and 63 participants attending pop-up sessions.

Key themes raised by the community included erosion control, shared pathways and pedestrian

connections, parking and traffic management, safety, protection of the natural environment, drainage and flooding concerns, and the need for clear funding and delivery timelines.

Council officers reported strong support for improving safety, access and recreational facilities, alongside a clear message that erosion control and pathway connectivity should be prioritised ahead of other elements such as parking and new infrastructure.

As a result of community feedback, several amendments were made to the final master plan.

These include extending pathways and parking along sections of Ocean Drive, refining seawall alignment and erosion protection measures, improving beach access at Aqua Reserve,

upgrading amenities at Jonathan Dickson Reserve, and introducing features such as a cantilevered lookout, drinking fountain and updated outdoor fitness equipment.

Councillor Lisa Intermann said the process highlighted the importance

That worry intensified on Tuesday when Kindee Bridge was suddenly closed.

A trip into Wauchope via the bridge is approximately 30 minutes, it will now require a detour on a rough road and will take more than an hour.

Chris told News Of The Area, “I heard rumours on Tuesday that the bridge might be closing.

“So that afternoon I called the Council, the lady I spoke to said that she had no knowledge of that happening, and that if it was going to [close], Council would advise residents.”

Less than two hours later, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council posted a notice on their Facebook page and issued a media release, announcing that the bridge was closed until further notice due to structural integrity and safety concerns.

The bridge won’t reopen until a specialist can inspect it and make recommendations; and a detour is now in place via Pipeclay Road with motorists advised to allow additional travel time.

PMHC Acting Director Community Infrastructure Blayne West told News Of The Area, “the closure was

While Chris understands it is essential to maintain safe infrastructure for locals, he is concerned about the lack of

communication from Council to residents, particularly as he is aware of several who do not access the internet or social media.

He remains hopeful that they will receive formal communications in the next few days with more information, particularly around plans for emergencies.

PlaneDeer brings Christmas Joy

QANTAS team members and Australian Red Cross volunteers delivered hundreds of presents to flood impacted communities on the Mid North Coast, as part of the fourth annual PlaneDeer Christmas Gift Drive.

The specially chartered flight, Santa’s Link “Dasher 8” arrived at Port Macquarie Airport on Tuesday morning, 16 December.

Students and staff from Coopernook Public School, who had been up early to travel by bus to Port Macquarie, filled the airport with excited chatter and Christmas cheer.

Phillip Hanlon, a spokesperson for Australian Red Cross said, “Immediately following the Mid North Coast

floods in May 2025, local residents and community groups in Kempsey, Coopernook, and the broader region, mobilised to support neighbours: clearing debris, sharing resources (food, water, shelter) and organising local clean-up fronts.

“In partnership with Qantas, hundreds of gifts donated by Qantas staff were flown into Port Macquarie Airport and delivered to students of Coopernook Public School, and Kempsey East, West, and South public schools.”

There was a sea of red as Red Cross volunteers disembarked and joined local volunteers in handing out gifts.

Emergency Lead Sarah U’Brien said, “We work with Qantas each year as

they sponsor communities that have been affected by hardship and bring some Christmas cheer.

“This year we nominated Coopernook because we know the impact on that community and how the school pulled together and rallied in such a beautiful and

“We wanted to give a little bit of kindness back, because they have given so much to everyone.

Rachel Nicholson and Janine Stephen, spoke quietly about how tough this year has been for their community and how they have all been impacted by the devastation of the floods.

The joy on the faces of their students as the Red Cross Bear disembarked and gave them Trauma Teddies to hold, moved those on the tarmac on Tuesday morning.

Once the children burst into song, with a beautiful rendition of “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,” there was not a dry eye in the crowd.

Early start for shark spotting drones SURF Life Saving drones will be in the air earlier and for longer this summer as the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) steps up shark surveillance.

The NSW Government has allocated an extra $2.5m for shark management following the recent deaths of a female tourist near Crowdy Bay and a local surfer on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

Through the DPI, Surf Life Saving NSW (SLSNSW) has delivered shark surveillance across the state for nearly a decade. This year, sweeps of 33 beaches were set to start a week early, on 13 December.

The Hunter and Mid North Coast beaches to have earlier drone surveillance are Fingal Rovers, South West Rocks, Crescent Head, Town Beach Port Macquarie, Lighthouse Beach Port Macquarie, Forster, Fingal Beach, Nobbys and Redhead.

From 20 December, they will be joined by Sawtell, Urunga, Scotts Head, Black Head, Cape Hawke, Tea Gardens Hawks Nest and Birubi Point, which are among the 50 beaches to have daily drone patrols until the end of January.

As part of the increased funding, weekend patrols will then continue at all 50

beaches until 29 March.

SLSNSW CEO Steve Pearce said, “Last summer alone, 50 locations from Tweed to Bega were covered, with drones completing 18,027 flights over 4897 flying hours.

“During that time, 815 sharks were sighted including 41 bull sharks, 45 white sharks and 729 unknown sharks.

“Our lifeguards and lifesavers enacted 115 preventions, including 88 beach evacuations, plus other counter-measures including beach sirens, drone sirens, and tasking Inflatable Rescue Boats (IRBs) and jet skis.”

More than 100 Australian Unarmed Aerial Vehicle pilots (UAVs) will operate the drones.

“Our incredibly talented and highly skilled team is well-placed to deliver a greater scope of service for this summer,” said AUAVS Manager James Bassam.

“To pull together a comprehensive rollout of drone patrols earlier than scheduled, all while pushing boundaries with new innovations and projects, is why Surf Life Saving NSW leads the way in this space.”

Minister for Agriculture and Regional NSW Tara Moriarty, said drones have

proven to be an effective eye in the sky when it comes to early shark detection and warning beach users.

“This enhancement package is another important step forward in using and expanding their potential along our coastline,” she said.

“A better awareness of sharks and their behaviour can help us all enjoy the beach and reduce the risk of shark interactions.”

As previously reported

by News Of The Area, shark bite trauma kits will also be installed on 67 SLSNSW Emergency Response Beacons, in mainly high-risk unpatrolled locations along the coastline.

The kits contain tourniquets, compression bandages and other first aid supplies to treat serious bite injuries, and were the inspiration of Danny Schouten, whose mate Kai McKenzie was attacked by a shark while surfing off Port Macquarie’s North Shore in 2024.

The new funding will also see an extensive community awareness and SharkSmart education program across social media and at coastal communities this summer to promote shark safety tips.

Recycling overhaul approved for Cairncross facility

PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council will transition the Cairncross Materials Recycling Facility from a local processing plant to a largescale transfer station.

A council report says major changes across the recycling industry have made small regional facilities increasingly unviable.

The decision last week confirms Council will move away from plans first flagged in 2022 to establish a new best-practice materials

recovery facility at Cairncross.

Instead, co-mingled recyclables will be collected locally and transported to larger external facilities for sorting and processing.

A council report said industry feedback had consistently shown that economies of scale are now essential for recycling facilities to operate profitably, with regional councils struggling to justify the cost of building, upgrading and operating local processing plants.

Under the new approach, Council will seek public tenders for the operation of a transfer station

rather than a materials recovery processing facility, simplifying the procurement process and providing clarity to prospective operators.

Councillors supported the shift but raised concerns during debate about transport costs, long-term resilience of recycling services, and the need to ensure the community continues to receive strong environmental outcomes.

Council officers said transporting recyclables to larger facilities would allow access to advanced sorting technologies not feasible at a regional scale, improving recovery rates and alignment

with evolving sustainability standards.

The report said that other regional and rural councils, including MidCoast, Orange, Dubbo, Tamworth and Maitland, had already transitioned to similar models, sending recyclables to major processing hubs in Newcastle, Sydney and the Central Coast.

While the move may result in small increases in transport costs, Council said these would be offset by avoiding the significant capital investment required to build a new processing facility, previously estimated to range between $20 million

and $90 million before inflation.

The existing recycling contract at Cairncross is set to run until August

$17 million retrofit as the most affordable and practical option for ratepayers.

Council officers advised that the plant, originally constructed in the 1960s and last upgraded in the early 1990s, is facing capacity and asset condition issues.

The deteriorating inlet works were identified as the most urgent priority, requiring immediate investment regardless of whether the plant is upgraded or relocated.

A detailed options assessment considered relocating the plant to a new site outside the floodplain, expanding onto adjacent land, or upgrading the existing facility.

The report found that acquiring land and constructing a new plant would cost around $92 million, compared with about $17 million to upgrade the current site.

Even if a new plant were pursued, council would still

need to complete a $7.7 million inlet works upgrade at the existing Wauchope site, as the current infrastructure cannot be deferred.

Flood risk was a central concern in the assessment.

While the site is flood prone, council officers said flooding typically occurs with low water velocity, and past events in 2021 and 2025 caused minimal disruption to operations.

To manage risk, the concept design incorporates

flood mitigation measures, with all new critical infrastructure, including electrical systems, switchboards and mechanical equipment, to be constructed above designated flood planning levels.

Non-critical components such as sludge lagoons would remain below those levels.

A $92 MILLION price tag to build a new wastewater treatment plant has driven Port Macquarie Hastings Council’s decision to instead upgrade the existing Wauchope facility, despite concerns about flooding at the site.

Councillors last week unanimously endorsed a staged upgrade of the Wauchope Wastewater Treatment Plant, backing a

Community Santa photos bring joy and support to local charity FESTIVE spirit was on full display in Laurieton as Bower On Lake, in collaboration with the Camden Haven Chamber of Commerce, hosted community Santa photos for charity.

Just under $200 was raised, with all funds donated to Aussie Battlers – Pay It Forward Inc., a local organisation that works tirelessly to support people in need across the region.

The event began three years ago, founded by Laurieton business owner Susi Kurteff as a way to give back, spread joy and ensure families doing it tough could still enjoy the simple tradition of a Santa photo.

Although Susi has since sold her business, the

tradition lives on thanks to fellow Bower On Lake proprietors and Laurieton locals Amy Vandenhurk and Dan Fox. Amy, who also serves as Treasurer of the Chamber, continues Susi’s legacy with warmth and community spirit at the heart of the event.

A founding supporter of the initiative was local real estate agent and current Chamber President, Luke Hadfield, who has stepped into the role of Santa each year.

While modest in size, the event has steadily grown since its inception.

This year, Aussie Battlers was chosen as the beneficiary.

The organisation does not receive government

funding and relies entirely on volunteer support and community donations to continue furnishing homes and providing essential items for those facing hardship.

Children, families, adults and even pets joined in the festivities, enjoying a relaxed and welcoming opportunity to capture a special Christmas memory.

Luke said the event carries meaningful value for the wider community, particularly during a challenging year for many.

“This year, many local businesses have shared with me the pressures they are facing,” he said.

“When our businesses feel it, our community feels it too.

He also acknowledged the efforts of the event hosts.

“We are fortunate to have them as Chamber members and as a valued local business.”

Amy said continuing Susi’s original vision has become a meaningful tradition for Bower On Lake.

“We continued what Susi started back in 2023.

“After customer requests and with the help of Santa, we had a fun afternoon and

were able to raise money for the wonderful local charity, Aussie Battlers.”

She said the chance to bring her passion for event styling into a community project adds to the magic of the day.

“With a background in styling events it’s nice to be able to give back and create a Christmas photo backdrop that feels special and supports the beautiful community that we live in.”

Christmas decorations steeped in history

HAVE you ever wondered why we decorate cone-bearing trees, eat turkey and ham, light candles, pull bonbons, hang Christmas stockings, decorate homes, make wreaths and credit Santa with delivering presents via flying reindeer?

Most of us know that many Christmas traditions from the Northern Hemisphere sailed south with immigrants.

But many so-called Christmas traditions originated from pagan rituals associated with the Winter Solstice, just before Christmas.

Burning Yule logs, present giving, decorating homes with holly, kissing under the mistletoe and making wreaths were activities designed to nurture new life, fertility, and promote peace and hope.

Before Clement Clark Moore wrote the poem “A Visit from St Nicholas” in 1822 and before Coca-Cola transformed Saint Nicholas into an extension of their brand, the 4th Century Bishop of Myra in Asia Minor was being revered for his kindness and generosity especially to children and the needy.

As Christianity spread, the Greek Saint Nicholas evolved.

For centuries, the Dutch have celebrated Sinterklaas on 5 December, which is St Nicholas’s Names Day. Traditionally children leave their shoes out in the hope they will find them filled with treats and presents in the morning.

In some regions of Italy, La Befana was believed to sort “the naughty” from “the nice” on 6 January.

Arriving by broomstick, she would fill stockings with presents for the good and lumps of coal for the naughty.

Latvia claims to be the birthplace of the first decorated Christmas Tree when, in 1510, a pine tree was erected in the Town Hall Square in Riga; a tradition that continues to this day.

Latvian children receive presents on Christmas Eve but only after they entertain the family with a song, a poem or a musical performance.

Before the discovery of the Americas, a Christmas fowl was usually a goose, a chicken or, for the wealthy, a peacock.

Turkey didn’t become a popular dish among the general population until the 19th Century, thanks

Channelling my mother’s Christmas spirit

MY mother started making her Christmas cake from Miss McGregor’s recipe in about 1950.

Miss McGregor was Scottish and she owned and ran an exclusive dress shop in Smith Street, Kempsey which also sold hats, handbags, shoes and gloves to match any ensemble.

My mother started working there when she was 20 in 1949 and she stayed working there until I was born in 1959.

I don’t remember Miss McGregor but my mother talked about her, and the shop, for the rest of her life.

Mum passed away in 2017 and had long ago given up making Christmas cakes.

I started making the cake from the same recipe about 20 years ago, when Mum handed over the reins.

I still feel like a novice but I am getting better at it each year.

When Mum and Dad married and moved into our family home in 1957, Mum cooked on a fuel stove and eventually that was replaced by a combustion stove.

She never cooked a Christmas cake in an electric oven.

That makes such a difference, one that I am often reminded of when I q Soaking the fruit in Grandma Cain’s bowl.

It is very much trial and error and sometimes I find myself talking to Mum about how much longer I should leave the cake in the oven.

Mum always mixed her Christmas cakes and puddings in the bowl and it feels like I have the spirit of Mum, Miss McGregor and Grandma Cain working with me as I prepare the cake.

Keep the cake wrapped in the foil and a tea towel in a dark, cool cupboard until Christmas Day. Top up with a tablespoon of brandy every week or so.

I still can’t cut it until Christmas, as per Mum’s instructions.

Christmas under the stars: The sky that started a story

EVERY year, as the festive season picks up speed, the night sky quietly rolls out its own holiday display- no tinsel, no blinking bulbs, just a crisp dome of stars performing the same cosmic pageant they’ve been staging for thousands of years.

And woven into that ancient canvas is a tale as old as Christmas itself: the mystery of the so-called Christmas Star.

It’s easy to imagine that long-ago night, clear, cool, and still, with the kind of silence only the desert can manage.

To the east, the familiar constellations of winter marched upward: Orion with his unmistakable belt, Taurus the Bull following close behind, and the pale shimmer of the Pleiades, a cluster so distinctive even non-astronomers can spot it in a heartbeat.

It was a sky suited for wonder.

A sky perfect for a story.

But was there truly a special star?

Something bright enough, strange enough, to send

travellers on a journey?

That’s where astronomy steps in, not to spoil the magic, but to show that the universe itself may have provided something extraordinary.

Historians and astronomers have been investigating this puzzle for centuries, and the contenders are more interesting than you might expect.

One idea points to a brilliant planetary conjunction, the meeting of Jupiter and Saturn in 7 BC and again in 2BC. The two brightest planets huddled so closely together that, to the naked eye, they would have appeared as a single, unusually intense point of light.

And since Jupiter was associated with kings and Saturn with older wisdom in ancient astrology, some scholars suggest the sight may have had symbolic meaning to early skywatchers.

Another possibility is a nova or supernova, a star exploding in a surge of light so dramatic it becomes briefly visible even without a telescope.

Ancient Chinese and Korean astronomers

recorded such events around the right period, and it’s entirely plausible that one of those stellar outbursts lit up the western sky for weeks.

Then there’s the idea of a comet.

Halley’s Comet swept through the inner solar system around 12 BC - too early, but not impossible if later storytellers merged events into a single narrative.

Comets, with their sweeping tails, were often seen as omens.

Some good. Some… well, less festive.

Still, the idea refuses to fade because a bright comet is, undeniably, a scenestealer.

And here’s the twist: it might not have been one single event at all, but a series of striking sights across several years. For ancient skywatchers, who monitored the heavens with a dedication modern stargazers can only admire, the sky was a messenger.

When something unusual happened, people paid attention.

Fast-forward to today.

When we step outside on a warm December night in the Southern Hemisphere, the sky is dramatically different from that old Middle Eastern

canvas.

Our summer evenings are ruled by the brilliant Southern Cross, the coal-black patch of the Coalsack Nebula, and the faint smudge of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, two nearby galaxies visible to the naked eye.

If your Christmas involves a backyard barbecue, chances are you’ve glanced up at these silent companions without even realising how rare they are globally.

High overhead sits Canopus, the secondbrightest star in the night sky, dazzling enough to turn heads even in suburban light.

To the east, Sirius rises

- whiter, sharper, and bright enough to cast a faint shadow under the darkest skies.

And if you’re up before dawn, you might catch Venus, so luminous it often gets mistaken for a UFO… or something far more biblical.

So, what does all this mean for the Christmas Star?

The beauty of astronomy is that it doesn’t try to replace wonder - it expands it.

The same laws of physics that govern planets and exploding stars also allow us to retrace the sky as it looked thousands of years ago.

Whether the star was a planetary alignment, a nova, or simply a poetic way of marking a moment, the fact

remains: the sky has always been part of our story.

And maybe that’s the real magic.

Long before fairy lights and plastic reindeer, before crowded shops and digital wish lists, humanity looked upward for meaning.

The night sky connected people across cultures, across deserts, across centuries. It still does.

This Christmas, when the air cools and the stars sharpen, take a moment to step outside and look up.

The universe isn’t just overhead, it’s part of the holiday tradition too, quietly shining, just as it did the night a story began.

Work continues to restore Oxley Highway

RECONSTRUCTION work is continuing on the Oxley Highway at Mount Seaview to restore full access through areas affected by natural disasters.

The weekly planned closure at Mount Seaview will be lifted after Thursday 18 December, with parts of the highway returning to single lane, alternating flow traffic arrangements during the NSW summer school holidays and into the new year.

The Australian and NSW Governments are funding this work through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Transport for NSW Executive Director Regional Road Network Maintenance Alistair Lunn said it has been a challenging project.

“The unavoidable delays we have seen due to repeated weather events mean this work is taking longer than we had hoped,” he said.

“The road travels through

steep and rugged terrain which has been subjected to repeated deluges over recent years, making the challenge to restore it even greater.

“We’ve made significant progress at numerous sites along the highway, despite those extreme weather impacts in March and May 2025 and ongoing wet weather from June to August, when more than 100 new landslips were recorded around Mount Seaview.

“That exacerbated earlier damage and delayed work at other slip sites.

Virtual stock fencing legalised

CATTLE and dairy farmers have welcomed the government’s decision to legalise virtual stock fencing, which involves using GPS collars to control the animals through audio cues and electric shocks.

The move is expected to reduce physical fencing costs, improve rotational grazing systems, and provide remote access to data on the welfare of herds.

Minister for Agriculture Tara Moriarty, announced the technology would be regulated for use in NSW, following extensive consultation with farming groups, animal welfare enforcement agencies, and suppliers.

“NSW farmers have now gained access to this new technology like their counterparts in Queensland, the Northern Territory, Western Australia and Tasmania,” she said.

“We have listened to the farming industry, animal welfare groups, and advocates like the Member for Orange Phil Donato and we have got the balance right for delivering virtual fencing on farms.”

Mr Donato said legalising

virtual stock fencing is a commonsense win for farmers and regional NSW. “I’ve been calling for this reform for years because it gives producers the freedom to manage their herds more efficiently, safely, and sustainably.”

The neckbands can alert farmers to animal issues requiring intervention, and can be disabled to reduce stress.

The RSPCA says that animal welfare must remain the foremost concern, arguing that technology should never replace “good husbandry, management and training.”

The NSW Guide to Animal Welfare for Virtual Fencing of Cattle, includes certain safeguards that must be met.

These are that: — the user must be trained in how to use the device by the supplier or manufacturer — the user must ensure devices are regularly monitored and animal welfare standards are met — devices will allow users to control the boundaries that trigger cues to the animal, but users cannot deliver cues directly to an animal — devices must use vibrational or audio cues first, before using electric cues.

Major change to gas connection fees THE Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) will require newly connecting retail gas customers to pay the upfront cost of their connection, often more than $2000, moving away from the old system where these costs were often shared across all customers.

The recent final determination responds to a rule change request from Energy Consumers Australia and addresses challenges created by declining gas demand projected by the Australian Energy Market Operator.

“The rule aligns with the AEMC’s strategic narrative, which focuses on how the gas regulatory framework can best support consumers and the electricity system during the transition to net-zero emissions,” the AEMC said in a statement.

Under the old framework, when a new customer connected to the gas network, the connection costs were typically added to the gas distributors’ capital base and recovered from consumers over time.

However, as the outlook for residential and commercial gas use becomes increasingly uncertain, the costs of operating and maintaining the

network may be spread across lower demand, meaning remaining customers increasingly bear the cost of connections that may not be fully paid off.

AEMC Chair Anna Collyer said the changes will protect lower-income households, renters and apartment dwellers and small and medium businesses - who often face barriers to electrification - from bearing the costs of new connections as other users decide to leave the network.

“The existing approach was designed for growing networks, but it’s no longer fit for purpose in a context where the outlook for gas demand is uncertain and is projected to decline," Ms Collyer said.

"Our final rule ensures those who benefit from new connections pay for them, while protecting existing customers from increased network costs.

“We're pleased this beneficiary-pays approach achieved broad stakeholder support.”

The final rule is supported by AEMO’s Gas Statement of Opportunities and distributors’ demand forecasts, which projects distribution-connected

residential and commercial demand will fall.

AEMO projects this will be by around 30 percent in the next 10 years and 70 percent over 20 years.

“This is about giving customers clear, upfront price signals so they can make informed decisions about their energy choices,” Ms Collyer said.

“Customers will still be able to connect to gas if they choose to, they'll just pay the true cost of connecting upfront rather than having those costs spread across all gas users.

“This approach was supported by stakeholders because it protects consumers who may find it difficult to leave the gas network.”

The rule will apply to new retail customers connecting to the main gas distribution networks in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, South Australia and some Queensland gas distribution networks from 1 October 2026.

Rewiring Australia welcomed the move away from the old system, which it has argued has been rewarding developers at

the expense of families.

“For too long, developers have been imposing higher bills and more emissions on people by building gas-connected homes just because it saved them a bit of money,” said Rewiring Australia CEO Francis Vierboom.

“This announcement fixes the economics.

“We can run our homes on electricity and we hope it marks the end of new gas connections nationwide.

“When you’re in a hole, stop digging.”

The latest figures from the Australian Energy Regulator show that gas has already slowed down, with only one new gas connection for every five new electricity connections across the country, and home gas usage declining by 15 percent last year according to the ABS. “We need to focus on helping more families and households electrify their homes so that they can benefit from cheaper and cleaner energy, and we need to do this urgently so that renters, and low income households aren’t left behind and left stuck on gas,” Francis Vierboom said.

No justification for terrible Bondi act

called out savagely.

Whether on the ‘right’ or the ‘left’, anyone attempting to use this event to justify antisemitism or Islamophobia on the one hand, or attacking people’s right to protest against the actions of the state of Israel in killing 60,000-plus people in Gaza or, for example, the human rights abuses of the state of Iran, on the other hand, should also be resisted in the strongest possible terms.

There can be no justification for this terrible act, and, also, no justification by

individuals, political groups, or the state, to use this event to further divide people and to advance their political agendas.

When people start using this shooting as an excuse to stir up anti-Palestinian and Islamaphobic sentiment, don't forget that it was an Arab, Ahmed al Ahmed, who took down one of the shooters.

And the last time there was blood being spilled in Bondi (when "Joel Cauchi launched his stabbing attack, killing five women and one man") it was Faraz Tahir, another man of Arabic descent, who

stopped Joel Cauchi, and lost his life in the process, just as Ahmed al Ahmed could have.

Finally, it is obvious that further gun law reform is needed in Australia.

Why should anyone be allowed to have six guns, no matter what their occupation or recreational interest.

Kids are nagging me for a real one, but I have a tree on the mezzanine that I can just drag down and decorate.

A one-way ticket to the naughty list AFTER many years of delivering Christmas Cheer around the world, Santa decides it is time to get his legal affairs in order.

He visits his long-time solicitor Ebenezer Scrooge, who dutifully prepares a Power of Attorney (‘POA’) appointing Santa’s son, Kringle Jr. The POA contains a specific power allowing Kringle Jr. to oversee “emergency operational decisions” strictly relating to “the distribution of gifts, management of the reindeer herd and the elves’ employment”.

Santa executes the POA in the presence of Scrooge, who witnesses the appointment as a legal practitioner.

Mrs Claus convinces Santa that even immortal gift-givers deserve a holiday, so they fly off to the Caribbean, leaving Christmas in the “capable” hands of Kringle Jr. After two weeks, Santa receives a call from Dr Suess, deeply concerned for his distressed elf clients who have not been paid and were threatening to go on strike.

Santa immediately checks the North Pole Operating Account and discovers several large transactions to Kringle Jr Enterprises for consulting fees, a goldplated sports model sleigh and an Airbnb charge for a “self-morale retreat” in Whoville.

Santa and Mrs Claus immediately abandon their pina coladas and race back to the North Pole, where they are greeted by a host of angry elves yelling “No Pay, No Sleigh!”

Santa seeks urgent advice from Scrooge who, with his usual frosty precision, confirms that while Kringle Jr had been given authority to make emergency decisions, siphoning funds for personal use was a breach of his fiduciary duties.

The conduct of an attorney is subject to strict obligations to always act in the principal’s best interests and unless expressly authorised, an attorney cannot personally benefit from their role.

Scrooge explains that emergency decisions do not reasonably include purchasing gold-plated sleighs or spa weekends.

Santa promptly revokes Kringle Jr as his POA, scrambles to pay the elves and Christmas is saved just in the nick of time.

Meanwhile, Kringle Jr receives a permanent one-way ticket to the Naughty List.

AS another year of newspapers comes to a close, I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone involved in the News Of The Area (NOTA) world for their support in 2025.

It is hard to believe it has been fiveand-a-half years since I first came on board with NOTA, and I continue to be very proud of the role our newspapers play in their communities.

Family-owned and operated, NOTA has expanded rapidly in recent years.

In 2020 the business ran two regional newspapers (in Port Stephens and on the Myall Coast), before launching papers on the Coffs Coast and in the Nambucca Valley (2020 and 2021 respectively).

In the past two years we have launched papers in Dungog, Gloucester, Camden Haven and Port Macquarie and it has been a privilege to work alongside those communities since.

Dozens of people contribute each week to make these eight weekly newspapers a reality.

A huge thank you to the ads team, admin and reception staff, truck drivers, deliverers, designers and more for their hard work and professionalism.

Our editorial teams across the board have had a fantastic year too, and should be applauded for their dedication to communityfocused public interest journalism.

I don't want to alarm you, but do you realise we are heading towards the pointy end of Christmas?

With just a handful of days to go, I'm not sure if now is the time to be making decisions about what sort of tree you want.

There are extremes on the Christmas preparation spectrum though, so who am I to judge?

I clearly remember having an existential crisis in the Santa queue at the local shopping centre one year, which was the very last year we had Santa photos.

I may have put a Santa hat on our pet goat and taken a quick snap with the kids before the goat head-butted them as a sub par alternative.

I personally get irritated by those who have their tree up and presents wrapped by mid-November.

I know these people exist, because they drop casual, 'Have you done your Christmas shopping yet?' questions from about September, just waiting for me to say, 'don't be ridiculous' so they can tell me how they've pretty much completed every detail. Elf on the Shelf enthusiasts drive me crazy too.

Who has time to come up with 25 naughty elf ideas?

Not this bunny.

Going back to the tree, there are pros and cons of both options. Real trees look spectacular but they drop a lot of pine needles which means you're constantly sweeping. They are also not a great idea if you have an indoor dog for reasons I'd prefer not to spell out.

Then there is the issue of postChristmas disposal.

Nothing looks sadder than a withering tree on the wood pile that will have to stay there until the end of March when you can burn it, unless you diligently cut it into green-bin sized offcuts.

The tree you have stored like a safer bet this year.

Though terrible from an environmental perspective, you already own it, so it's better going up in your lounge-room than being put on the council verge ready for landfill.

May I suggest that in the postChristmas sales, you purchase a tree in a pot.

This will grow with your family, resolve the real/fake tree dilemma, and be far better from an organisational and environmental perspective for many years to come.

Returning for a much-anticipated encore after last year’s special, Australia’s musical theatre community comes together in support of Beyond Blue for this delightful concert. At a time of year that can be difficult for many, it’s an important reminder of the charity’s free mental health and wellbeing support. Filmed on the festively decorated set of MJ the Musical at Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre, the special sparkles with homegrown talent including Casey Donovan, Rob Mills (pictured) and Caroline O’Connor.

After filming her 2024 special in Hollywood, Delta Goodrem (pictured) returns to home soil for this sparkling evening.

Taking over Channel Nine’s Sydney studio and transforming it into a retro winter wonderland, the newlywed singer invites Cody Simpson, Jon Bon Jovi, Jordin Sparks and a bevy of talented Aussies to perform their festive favourites. There’s delightful duets, joyful surprises and moving moments in store as Goodrem shares the stage with her famous friends. A toetapping tradition that began in 2020, Goodrem’s annual special is the perfect way to celebrate the season in style.

A triple treat for soap opera fans on both sides of the Atlantic, this homegrown drama combines the talents of Neighbours stalwart Jackie Woodburne, Coronation Street favourite Kym Marsh and one-time Summer Bay resident Dannii Minogue (all pictured). Set in a Victorian coastal town, the four-part series sees Woodburne swap Susan Kennedy’s cherry locks for a bushy silver bob as Helen, the matriarch at the centre of a bitter family feud. Helen’s three adult kids are pressing her to sell a seaside hotel, but she’s determined to stay put. The situation is heightened by the arrival of Amanda (Marsh), the daughter Helen gave up decades ago.

LOCAL Dave Castleton lives and breathes sailing.

When he first joined the Queens Lake Sailing Club in 1997, his long-term goal was to sail in the annual Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

Surpassing that goal, on 26 December Dave will commence his eighth race, crewing on the Lake Macquarie based boat “Inner Circle” which will cross 628 nautical miles, covering challenging stretches of rough water with notoriously unpredictable weather.

Most of the crew have been racing together for more than 20 years, with this being the

highlight of their racing calendar.

Dave told News Of The Area, “I’d encourage everyone to have a goal, and this shows that anything is achievable.

“To come from a country club and be able to sail in such a prestigious race is fantastic.”

With the help of a committed group of volunteers who work hard behind the scenes, the Queens Lake Sailing Club is producing some excellent sailors and club membership is booming.

Sailing on an open flat water rather than a river like many country clubs, it is also becoming renowned as a desirable place for sailing championships, with sailors prepared to travel great

distances to compete there.

Recently Dave was nominated by a member of the community to receive parliamentary acknowledgement of his efforts; this resulted in him receiving a certificate from Member for Port Macquarie Rob Dwyer, recognising him as a driving force behind the growth and success of the Queens Lake Sailing Club for the last two decades.

While delighted to receive this recognition of his hard work, Dave is keen to point out that the club successes are very much a team effort.

The iconic Sydney to Hobart race has been running since 1945 and is organised by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia.
