And just like that, Christmas is over, New Years has come and gone and now it’s Valentine’s Day. When Jesus said, “What ye must do, do it now…” (John 13:27) you can see why. We’ve encouraged our people to get focused in the first quarter of 2014, so that the rest of the year, they can live their plan.

Our plan for Villa Rica is to bless its people, her businesses and strengthen God’s glorious body, the church. And to that end, we want to invite you to use the upcoming Valentine’s holiday to do more than buy flowers and candy, but to sweeten your heart toward Jesus. And allow His love for you to overflow into the lives of others.

So how do we Make Love-Work?

Act of the Will 1. People who routinely fail to give love, likewise find it difficult to receive love. Why then would a person refuse to give love? FEAR. Fear introduces the element of punishment (1 John 4:18). As long as a lingering expectation lies within the heart, it is only a matter of time before it is triggered by the right life event. Once fear is removed however, it casts out the threat of loss (FEAR).

Permission Granted 2. Ed Cole said, “You can only give away one time, that which was intended to last a life time.” Why is virginity mocked in movies and in most social circles? IT’S PURE. Satan uses people in the world to cheapen the things God made beautiful. To exclude the God component is to lessen the value and meaning of the act. In this way, there is no accountability, nor is their any responsibility. When love is made

Why is ‘everybody doing it?’ IT FEELS GOOD. Word on the street is, “If it feels good, do it”. Unfortunately, everything that feels good to you is not good for you. Subsequently all over America, Valentine’s Day will pair uncommitted man with uncommitted woman, who will then commit to a gift that was betrothed only to the committed.

We make love work by allowing God’s heart to act upon our will, by giving Him permission to expand His love and by connecting to His covenant (agreement). That said, Have a Happy Valentine’s Day and remember, Love CANNOT WORK, without God!!

From the moment we walked in, a smiling face immediately greeted us.

We were genuinely struck by the friendliness and training of the staff during our entire visit. The manager, David Mackey, also impressed me. He was visible throughout the evening, checking on the patrons and making sure the restaurant was providing a high level of service and food quality.

Of course, in any dining experience, the food is the most important thing, and the new Winter Peak Season items were out of this world! My son tried the garlic mussels appetizer, steamed in Sam Adams beer, and remarked that they had a great texture and flavor. The winter brie salad was refreshing, with blackberry vinaigrette, mandarin orange slices, dried cherries, fresh greens, and warm brie cheese bites, that created an amazing combination of tastes.

For the main course, we made sure to try both of the items on the Chef’s Showcase menu. My son loves seafood, so he ordered the blackened salmon and cheddar grits. He loved the combination of the two distinct tastes. My wife and I both wanted the blue crab and Meyer lemon filet. It was a tender cut of filet topped with chunks of blue crab in a creamy lemon and smoky paprika hollandaise sauce. Since we wanted to sample as much as possible, we decided to also order the Parmesan crusted chicken with a garlic cheese topping from the regular menu. Both entrees were excellent and perfectly cooked.

The butterscotch praline pudding on the Winter Peak Season menu, was the perfect ending to the meal. It had a hint of Maker’s Mark bourbon caramel sauce along with candied pecans and a dab of whipped cream on top. It was also a perfect size, and was not difficult to finish because of its light texture and flavor.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I would not hesitate to give LongHorn a 10+.

Income above $400,000 (indexed for inflation) and $450,000 for married couples filing a joint return (also indexed for inflation) is taxed at a 39.6 percent rate. Additionally, the American Taxpayer Relief Act raised the top rate for capital gains and dividends to 20 percent where a taxpayer’s income exceeds the thresholds set for the 39.6 percent tax bracket. The American Taxpayer Relief Act also revived the “Pease” itemized-deduction limitation and the personal exemption phaseout (PEP) for higher income taxpayers.

Extenders While the American Taxpayer Relief Act extended many of the extenders, it did so only through 2013. These included the state and local sales tax deduction, higher education tuition deduction, teachers’ classroom expense deduction, research tax credit, transit benefits parity, a mortgage debt forgiveness exclusion, and more. Consequently, 2014 has started with the extenders—at last count, up to 55 of them—having expired.

NEW MEDICARE TAXES Effective January 1, 2013, the Affordable Care Act imposed two new Medicare taxes on qualified taxpayers: a 3.8 percent net investment income (NII) tax and a 0.9 percent Additional Medicare Tax. Throughout much of 2013 …and despite proposed reliance regulations issued in 2012, many taxpayers and their advisors continued to have questions regarding the application of these new taxes. Rose Needs a Home!

Rose is the kind of dog who lifts your spirits just being around her. She looks quiet in her cage, but when you put her outside in the grass, she’s playful, and funny. She loves other dogs, so she would be happy in a home where she would have some canine friends. She weighs around 25

pounds and is approximately three years old.

Blossom Book & Cinema & Television Clubs The Blossom Book Club meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7pm. The locations change from month to month as do the books. They also participate in many fun outings together.

C.A.S.T. reloads with new Café Noir play The Community Alliance for State and Theater (C.A.S.T.), a community theater serving both the Douglas and Carroll county areas, is proud to present Noir Pointblank, the latest in its long-running and popular series of mystery/comedy dinner theatre productions. The new show, which debuts in early February, is a direct sequel to an earlier production.

“This show is a follow-up to Café Noir, which we produced in 2010, and which turned out to be a big hit for us,” states group president Kevin Kincheloe. The production picks up shortly after the last one left off, with “man of mystery” Rick Archer fending off a host of dangerous types while trying to fathom a secret that’s already resulted in murder.

The action takes place shortly after World War II, so the place is still full of complications left over from the Nazi era.

The group has been careful to try to create a stylish “black and white” look evocative of old-fashioned film noir (hence the title). There are also a couple of musical numbers to add to the fun. As always with C.A.S.T., there are plenty of opportunities for audience participation, and everyone is encouraged to get involved.

Noir Pointblank premieres on February 1 at The Olive Tree restaurant in Villa Rica, which has become one of the group’s valued homes.

The run continues throughout the month and into March at various locations. The dates include February 1 and 8 at The Olive Tree in Villa Rica, February 22 and March 1 at The Olive Tree in Hiram, and February 15 and 16 at the Irish Bred Pub in downtown Douglasville. Seating for every show starts at 6:30pm, except for the February 16 show, which begins seating at 4pm.

Davina Grace Hill Assumes Local Arts Leadership Position The Board of Directors of the Cultural Arts Council of Douglasville/Douglas County is delighted to announce that Davina Grace Hill has been hired as its new Executive Director following a national search for qualified candidates conducted this fall.

More than 70 applicants were reviewed by the CAC Search Committee, chaired by Marcita Scharnhorst who recently retired as GreyStone Power Corporation’s Vice President of Human Resources, is a former President of the arts council board, and is currently CAC’s Treasurer. The committee, which also included Bob Smith and Allen Culpepper who both have served as Board Presidents, Ray Martin who is CAC’s County Liaison and Personnel Director of Douglas County, Fred Perry who is the City of Douglasville’s Human Resources Manager, and Greg Williams, the current President of the Cultural Arts Council Board of Directors, interviewed seven candidates before selecting Ms. Hill as the most qualified for the position in Douglas County.

Board President Greg Williams commented, “Ms. Hill comes to us with many years of experience in the arts,” continued President Williams. “She served as the executive director of the Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council in Salisbury, Maryland, for more than two decades, and then she was the executive director of the Chesapeake Arts Center in Brooklyn Park, Maryland, for six years. Ms. Hill has also worked with the National Endowment for the Humanities as an administrative assistant, the Kansas City Chapter of Young Audiences as a programs director, the Kansas City Symphony as its marketing director, the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis as its development director, and most recently as a staff member at the Horowitz Performing and Visual Arts Center in Columbia, Maryland. Davina earned her bachelor’s degree in Communication Arts and Theatre from Austin College in Texas and received her master’s degree in Community Arts Management with a focus on Arts Education

Organizing Tips Organizing the Matters of the Heart

Do you consider yourself an organized person? Your cabinets are in order, your clothes are sorted by color and length and your shoes are stacked and labeled. If someone opened the linen closet or peered under your bed, it wouldn’t bother you at all, but how would you feel if they took a peak at your relationships?

How good are you at organizing matters of the heart? Disorganization comes in many forms, and while you may have mastered organizing your “stuff”, if you haven’t organized your time in such a way that your family knows they are valued more than the stuff, you’re still disorganized!

Because of Valentine’s Day, February seems to be a good month to encourage you to think about organizing matters of the heart. If you aren’t careful one day becomes two then three and before you know it an entire week, month or even year has passed and you realize you’ve been so busy keeping your things organized that you have missed out on living your life.

If you’ve been reading my articles for any length of time you know I’m not saying organizing your stuff is unimportant, I’m just reminding you there needs to be some balance.

Always remember to love those close to your heart and prioritize your time so you can nurture those relationships. Plan your days around the things you value most, which hopefully is family and friends. Don’t allow outside commitments, whether it be church, work or hobbies to consume so much of your time that the people in your life feel neglected. You deserve to live a rewarding life, have a fulfilling marriage and have relationships that matter.

As a designer and organizer, I appreciate the value of having a home that is orderly and aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but if that’s your only focus your home will NEVER be a haven. Creating order and beauty should never be more important than creating a home where your family feels loved. Many years ago I worked for a company called Home Interiors and the owner, Mary Crowley was constantly reminding us that things are to be used and people are to be loved. Now I am on a mission to spread that same message.

This month as you celebrate the month of love, ask yourself, “Does my family know they matter?” The year is still young so now is the time to pull out your calendar and mark off blocks of time to really be engaged with those you love.

While you’re doing this don’t neglect to set aside time to nurture yourself.

One of the best gifts you can give your family is to take care of yourself. It’s impossible to be the person you were created to be if you’re always tired, stressed and irritable.

Until next month, make sure the life you’re living reflects your most important values and then live your life with passion!

The recent cold snap may have sent Georgia residents scurrying indoors, but spring will arrive before we know it. While it’s tempting to wait out the weather, dreaming of bright blossoms while researching seed catalogs and planning cutting edge hardscape projects, there’s still plenty to do to prepare your landscape for spring. Gardens lie dormant in the winter, bare of leaves and blooms. This unimpeded view of shrubs and tree limbs offers the perfect opportunity to make structural changes to your plants.

January to March is the ideal time to trim overgrowth and reshape shrubs.

Winter pruning minimizes the risk of shock and disease in plants. Because pruning encourages growth, trimming limbs during the dormant season encourages a brighter, fuller garden when plants revitalize in early spring. Pruning redirects nutrients to the most vital branches, encouraging better health and more abundant fruit and flowers. Prune your deciduous trees, ornamentals, and shrubs after the initial onslaught of cold winter weather, when frequent thawing and refreezing makes plants most vulnerable. Take advantage of your winter pruning spree and cut back ornamental grasses like liriope, which often become overgrown and bedraggled during the cooler months.

When trying to determine what to prune keep four D’s in mind • Dead branches - start here, this will help to orient you to the specimens patterns of growth • Damaged branches and…

• Diseased branches - remove both damaged and disease growth if feasible

• Deranged limbs - Lastly remove those branches which cross or rub on one another or break the pattern or rhythm of the rest of the structure Pruning Tips Incorrect pruning techniques make plants susceptible to disease, slowed growth, and the disapproving eyes of your neighbors. When pruning your plants this winter, follow these basic guidelines: • Choose a sunny day in mid to late winter.

• Use clean, sharp pruning shears.

• Angle your cuts to mimic branch growth.

• Research proper pruning techniques for frequently over pruned trees like Crepe Myrtles.

• Step back often to reassess what needs pruning.

• When in doubt, prune less.

home & garden Sound Proofing Your Home Unwanted noises in your home from the outside environment and from your home itself can make your home a less comfortable place. Noises of outside traffic, household creaks, and mechanical sounds can cause the homeowner to lose sleep while creating a more stressful and less secure feeling home environment. Your goal for your home should be to create a quiet, secure feeling in your home that is separate from outside noise and distractions.

Appliances. The appliances in your home have a variety of moving parts, and all of them make noise. The goal with appliances is to find ways to make them make as little noise as possible. Washing machines, dryers, and many other appliances make vibrations that create noise. If they are placed directly on your floor, these vibrations travel directly to the floor and the noise is amplified. Adding cork or rubber pads to the contact points between the appliances and the floor can do wonders to muffle this noise.

Additionally, you can decrease the vibrations significantly by adjusting their leg levelers so that they’re evenly balanced. Additionally, moving refrigerators, washing machines and dryers farther away from walls will prevent the walls from picking up the sound and amplifying it.

There are wide ranges of noise levels being generated by bathroom fans, dishwashers and kitchen stove vents. The next time you need to replace them, make sure that you check the noise rating levels (also known as sone levels) and select the ones with the lowest level. If you don’t see a rating, ask to listen to the one in the showroom.

Doors and Walls. The best way to soundproof your walls is to build them with solid, heavy material to dampen sound traveling through it.

Light, flimsy, and hollow materials will not prevent sound from traveling in your home.

If your walls have already been constructed and you’re looking for ways to help dampen sounds traveling through them, there’s still a great deal that can be done. Adding insulation to your walls can help, if it’s done right. Adding drywall is a poor decision, as its rigid material is not strong for sound-dampening and the space behind the drywall can create an acoustic chamber. Make sure that all holes and cracks are covered when insulatingeven a small gap will allow noise to enter. Even attics can allow sound into your home and could benefit from proper insulation.

When installing doors, choose heavy, solid-core doors over lighter hollow-core ones. Hollow doors with a space inside are filled with air, which allows sound to travel through with ease. Making your doors airtight will do a great deal for both insulating and soundproofing your home. If you’ve been putting off lubricating those squeaky door hinges, there’s no time like the present to quiet them!

Windows. Most sound that enters the house comes in through the windows. Check your windows and see if there is anywhere that air can come through- those will be points where the sound comes through the most.

Seal any of these cracks and gaps with flexible polyurethane or latex caulk.

Types of Receptions

The key to the type of reception you decide on will depend largely on the time of day you hold it. For example, an evening reception might necessitate holding a simple buffet meal or even a formal sit-down dinner. In this case, it would usually be held between 6 and 9 p.m. A dinner reception is usually the most expensive type of reception due to the cost of the meal and amount of service required.

Depending on the time of day, other choices include a brunch, a buffet luncheon, a tea or cocktail affair, or even simply light refreshments, if held in the afternoon. Morning receptions are often a much smaller affair than a dinner reception and may center around a brunch-type menu. The afternoon or early evening buffet is a popular choice among brides since it offers some of the advantages of the formal reception but at a much lower cost because minimal table service is required. The variety of foods served and number of guests accommodated can be determined by the reception budget. Food station buffets are growing in popularity as they offer a different serving area for each type of food provided. Each food station offers a different type of food and can provide guests with different ethnic food alternatives.

Bouquet & Garter Tossing the bride’s bouquet and garter are traditions often used at the close of wedding receptions. This could also be done earlier in the reception when more of the guests are present. If these events are to be photographed, make sure to include them in your list for the photographer.

A popular tradition at most weddings is the receiving line, which normally is set up near the entrance to the reception site. This provides the wedding couple an opportunity to greet each guest and for the guests to meet both sets of parents. Formation of the line includes first the bride’s mother, then the groom’s mother, next the groom’s father, then the newlyweds and the bridal attendants. The bride’s father, by tradition, is considered to be the roving host and directs guests to the receiving line.

Dances Many wedding receptions include dancing among the guests. In these cases, an order of dances is normally observed. This dictates that the first song should be the newlywed couple’s favorite, and they should be the only ones on the dance floor at that time. Lights may be dimmed to give a more romantic effect. The next dance should be the bride with her father, and the groom with the mother of his bride. This is followed by the bride with the groom’s father, and the groom with the mother of the groom.

After the parents dance, the wedding party, followed by other guests, join the dancing.

Wedding cakes have changed over time. The tradition of a wedding cake is said to have started in Ancient Rome with guests breaking bread over the bride’s head to bring good fortune. I would much rather have a little cake on my face than a cake over my head; thank goodness that tradition has changed. Then in Medieval England guests started stacking cakes as high as they could. If the couple could kiss over the top of the stack of cakes then they were guaranteed a prosperous life. The wedding cake took many different turns and twists over the last several hundred years. Most wedding cakes were not even for the guests to enjoy. Only the top tier of the wedding cake would be edible and that was only for the bride and groom. That changed with Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany’s wedding in 1882. His wedding to Princess Helena Friederike had the first cake to be completely edible.

Many cakes become the center piece of the reception. Wedding cakes have become works of art. This trend has become very clear by watching TV shows like “Platinum Weddings”, “Cake Boss”, and “Amazing Wedding Cakes”. Some of the cakes you see on these shows are works of art and cost more than the average wedding. I like to call these cakes inspiration cakes.

Love What makes a relationship successful? It can be a marriage, a friendship, or a relationship with a relative. Regardless of the relationship, what is the key to happiness in that relationship? The answer can be found in the New Testament. In I Corinthians, Paul stated, “So now faith, hope and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” God modeled this for us by sending his Son to earth for us. He willingly sacrificed so that we would benefit from it.

We’ve all seen relationships fail. For the most part, the ending of a relationship is painful. While some unhealthy relationships in life need to be ended, others may be salvaged with some effort and intentionality. In our relationships love is fleshed out in many different ways. Christ has to be at the center of our motivation. If we are vessels seeking His will and His way, then His love will flow through us allowing us to love in a powerful way. Being focused on Christ allows us to be sensitive to the prompting of the Holy Spirit to say an encouraging word, take time to pray for someone or put the needs of others before ourselves. In doing these things in any of our relationships we are allowing the love of Christ to shine through us. That is what real love is all about.
