Most people in the Body of Christ DON’T CARE about the person living next door to them! Statistically, people who attend church would rather not have homosexuals, people with tattoos and people from a race other than their own, as members of their church. Put another way, the church doesn’t want the world in their pews and the non-church goers generally feel that the church is a club. This information comes from Eric Erickson of 10:2 Strategies, who compiled this data from reports received from a large main line denomination. And true to form, after calling 4,000 people here in Villa Rica, we were shocked by the results. Our team actually talked to about 1,000 people. (May the Lord bless them for their work). We invited people to a church service if they didn’t already have church home and offered prayer for all, regardless of their church affiliation. Nearly 80% of those who already attended a church said that they needed nothing by way of prayer. REALLY?!!!!!! NOTHING?!!!! We were not asking them to pray with us over the phone, rather that a team of people would pray off line. There is no wonder the nation is in the shape it is in. So as long as I’m good, I’m not concerned about anybody else? Is that how a walk with Christ goes? Let me get this right, if my needs are met, I am all out of needs? Wow! Well, there you have it. If this is your position, don’t complain about Washington D.C. ever again. Don’t gasp about the drug problem in America, and leave the gay community alone. To the extent that you are smug in your Christianity, it will be reflected in the lack of active concern for others. May the Lord have mercy on us. The survey was right, we don’t like them, and they don’t like us. Thank God Jesus died for everybody! Consider this - we who name Christ have a window open where grace is being poured out. During this time our hearts had better change towards love or it will be trouble when the Lord returns. In a literal sense, there are people who are dying in your neighborhood. We talked to some of them on the phone. It is easy to see the reason for the increase in wickedness in the last days. Where there is a lack of love and a lack of light, darkness prevails. (See Matthew 24:12 and Genesis 1:1-3) What’s more shocking than this information is that on Sunday morning people will go to church for a few hours, return home and never help anyone with their experience. The following week they will do the same. Throughout the year this will be repeated through Christmas, birthdays, graduations and the playoffs for all sports. Along the way, there will be complete disgust with way the world is going, and contempt for those who do evil. But Romans 14:12 reveals how God thinks, “Therefore, each of us will give an account of himself to God.” We are all being warned. Read Matthew 25 about the

Ten Virgins. 1 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of the virgins were foolish, and five were wise.” You, my friend are in one of those two categories. Everyone has an eternal destiny. By receiving Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you can inherit the right destiny. It cost Jesus his life to get you back, therefore please read the remainder of Matthew 25 so that you fully understand the heart of God on this matter and avoid the shock of a lifetime.

dining New restaurant fights domestic violence while serving up sandwiches, salads and smoothies Luther’s Bistro opens on October 3rd at the corner of South Carroll Road and Highway 61, but the purpose is not only to provide great food, but also to benefit charities with every meal purchased. The restaurant is bright and cheery with lime green, black and purple colors inside. It is also state of the art. Customers can use the app to order their food while on the way to the bistro, or they can use the touch screens located throughout the restaurant to build their own salads, sandwiches or smoothies. You can even pay right on the touchscreen from your table. You can also download the app and build your sandwich, soup or salad on the way to the Bistro. For salads, patrons choose on the touch screens from six greens, up to six fruits and vegetables, meats, and toppings, and then select the dressing. The result is a custom salad. Sandwiches are created with the same type of procedure, with a choice of seven types of bread, four methods of preparation (grilled, Panini, plain or toasted), six choices of cheese, numerous sauces, nine choices of meats, plus greens and veggies. You can also create a smoothie in the same way. What makes the restaurant totally unique is that 80% of your meal is tax deductible, because 80% of the proceeds are donated to other charities and community service programs. It is run by the Autumn Hills Foundation, which is dedicated to ending domestic violence. So not only do customers get a tasty meal, but they also get a nice tax write-off. The restaurant is located at 901 South Carroll Road. For more information on the Bistro you may call 404.861.0727. For information on the Autumn Hills Foundation, you may call 678.899.3051 or visit www.autumnhillsfoundation. com or email ah.foundation@yahoo.com.

Those who enjoy barbecue will want to try DaSpot BBQ Grill, which opened on September 16th. The restaurant is located between Fairfield Plantation and Villa Rica at 4921 Carrollton Villa Rica Hwy, about three miles south of I-20. In addition to barbecue pork ribs, platters and sandwiches, they also sell smoked turkey legs, beef smoked sausage and catfish nuggets. You can also try one of their turkey, roast beef, ham, tuna salad or chicken salad sandwiches. They also have a kids menu. The restaurant is open from noon until 8pm Monday through Saturday. Catering is available for any size event. For more information, you may contact them at 770.809.9276.

Sam & Rosco’s introduces new menu and décor Those of you who enjoy the elegant atmosphere and fine dining at Sam & Rosco’s will want to stop in and see the new décor and try some of the new menu items they just unveiled. The restaurant has a more contemporary, yet still elegant look and décor with soft colors that enhance the already relaxing atmosphere. Soft symphonic music still plays in the background and linen napkins and tablecloths, the well trained staff and other amenities make this still the fanciest restaurant in Douglas County. Although the cuisine is still Continental, there are many new menu items. That’s because Chef Matt is back at the restaurant and he is bringing a number of new items to the menu, especially for the daily specials. The lunch menu has several new items as well, including filet mignon sliders and salmon kabobs. On Monday through Wednesday evenings during October, Sam & Rosco’s is offering a special dinner for two menu, where a couple can enjoy two entrees from a limited menu, plus mixed garden salad, their popular garlic rolls, and two soft beverages for $29.95. This offer is not valid with the Groupon or birthday promotions. Sam & Rosco’s is located at 7450 Douglas Boulevard in Douglasville, just down the street from Home Depot. They are open Monday through Friday for lunch from 11:30am to 2pm, and for dinner from 5pm to 10pm Monday through Saturday. For more information you may call them at 770.949.1195 or visit their website at www.samandroscosrestaurant.com.

Take Steps to Guard against Identity Fraud By GEMC Federal Credit Union, www.gemc.org, in partnership with Georgia Credit Union Affiliates. With the recent data breaches in big companies like Target and Home Depot, it is important now more than ever to learn how to protect yourself. Corrinda Edwards, a Member Service Representative for GEMC Federal Credit Union in Douglasville, GA, offers several strategies for consumers to follow. “First, consumers must pay attention to their accounts,” advised Edwards. “The consumer has more access and control than ever before. The ability to log into your account and check your balance any time of the day on your computer or mobile phone makes keeping an eye on your money easy. In addition, paying attention today means watching your credit report. Consumers can use annualcreditreport.com to get a free copy of their credit report once a year, directly from the reporting agencies. In Georgia, consumers are actually able to get up to two free credit reports from each reporting agency every year. The first report can be electronic, but the agencies ask that the second report be requested by mail.” “Secondly, consumers should ensure they are being secure over the Internet,” Edwards warns. “Keep your access information safe with robust, multi-character passwords and protection; don’t over-share information and dispose of personal information appropriately. Shred documents with personal information and keep it simple online. And don’t be fooled. Email and text message ads that require you to enter your personal information put you at risk for identity theft. If you are ever in doubt, ask somebody you trust, such as your credit union, if an offer is real, reasonable or just another attempt to trick you into giving your personal information away.”

Two new exhibits now open at the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center Lisa Upchurch Moore presents “Strength, Grace & Joy” now open and continues through October 24 in the Roush Gallery of the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center. Lisa Moore was born and raised in Northwest Georgia. Surrounded by artists, educators and free thinkers, Lisa was taught to look at the world in a way that enabled her to appreciate the beauty and wonder that surrounds all of us. That open way of thinking and seeing led Lisa to develop the skill of creativity that took her through sixteen years in the corporate world as an organizational development and design specialist. In short, her person and work life passionately lead her to a career as a professional artist. Currently Lisa’s creative progression is influenced by the emotions of everyday life. Lisa creates paintings that evoke a sense of the familiar. Her soulful renditions of everyday subjects help the viewer transcend to another place and time. Lisa’s work has been described as romantic, sensuous and poetic. A gifted colorist, she paints exceptional figures, children and rural settings. By applying paint, wax, lace and plaster, she is creating a dramatic surface with the subject matter becoming more abstract. Cameron Hampton presents “Light, Color, Action” now to October 4, 2014 in the Galleria of the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center. She uses traditional mediums combined with modern materials and digital mediums to create gritty imagery. The Carrollton Cultural Arts Center is located at 251 Alabama Street. Video Game Review

By Chadd Franklin, visit his website: chaddstournamentfuntime.com Hello gaming community! This month I am reviewing Strider for the PlayStation 4. Strider is a 2D action adventure game. The player controls the series’ main character, Strider Hiryu. The environment is freely explorable in search for weapons and items. Strider Hiryu’s main weapon is his Cypher, a plasma weapon that can take several properties The game is a retelling of the “core Strider story” and its common theme which centers around Hiryu’s battle against Grandmaster Meio.[6] The game mixes together elements from the first arcade Strider game, the NES console game, Strider 2, his fighting game appearances, and the original manga. Strider is available at the PlayStation store for $14.99, but PS plus members may be able to get it for free. The game is also available for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Windows. It looks great and is definitely worth the price. I give it a 4 out of 5.

Blissful Skin Care Microdermabrasion to Treat Sun-Damaged Skin By Leanne Lee, Licensed Esthetician, owner of Bliss Hair Salon & Day Spa, located at 4040 Chapel Hill Road in Douglasville, 770.942.1100, blissatlanta.com Microdermabrasion is a skin care technique that is still new to many but is a technique that has been used in dermatologists, day spas, and hair salons for many years. Microdermabrasion is the process of exfoliating the skin by using very tiny crystal like substances. It is the use of a smallpressured wand or abrasive wand that is used to remove dead skin cells on the face and other parts of the body. In human skin, there is a thick and uneven outer layer that protects the skin from weather and pathogens. Microdermabrasion resurfaces the outer layer of skin leaving it smoother and often lighter in appearance. Many people ask for this treatment when they want to treat skin that is scarred or discolored. This method has many benefits. Microdermabrasion lightens dark spots, reduces blackheads, exfoliates the skin, lessens stretch marks, reduces lines and wrinkles, treats acne, reduces hyperpigmentation and lessens large pores. In addition to exfoliating the skin, microdermabrasion also stimulates the

production of collagen fibers in the human skin. Collagen is the building blocks of skin and is the component that gives the skin a younger look and feel. Collagen is abundant when people are in their formative years but collagen production lessens as we age. The suction of the wand is what stimulates the production of collagen. The suction also creates a temporary plumping effect on the skin that is noticeable directly after a microdermabrasion but the long-term effect is more collagen in the skin. There are two common types of microdermabrasion. The most common type makes use of diamond crystals or aluminum oxide crystals in a pressurized wand to remove the outer layer of the skin. The crystals are sprayed onto the skin and then immediately vacuumed up by the wand in a continuous cycle. The second most common type used is a pressurized wand that has an abrasive tip that smooths the skin. The tip exfoliates the skin while the wand provides suction to remove  the dead skin cells. This procedure is considered mild; it can take place in an office or day spa, and a licensed professional should carry out this treatment. Most clients find the microdermabrasion procedure to be slightly uncomfortable to mildly painful. In this process, there is no need to take anesthetics. There is a more aggressive process called dermabrasion, which is surgical and very painful and should not be confused with microdermabrasion. The amount of suction and pressure depends on the resistance of the skin and the preference of the trained professional. A simple session takes about ten minutes to one hour depending on the way the professional will approach it. There is little to no recovery time after a microdermabrasion procedure. A skincare therapist may send home a lotion or serum with the client to apply on the days following the treatment. This soothes the exfoliated skin and prevents any unnecessary irritation after the procedure. If no products are given, a mild cleanser and moisturizer are best after a microdermabrasion. Take care to avoid the sun, extreme exercise, hot showers and saunas 24-48 after your treatment. Waxing and further exfoliation should be avoided as well. Microdermabrasion produces younger looking skin quickly and can change the overall appearance of the skin. Most professionals recommend repeating this procedure every four weeks or in a series to be repeated weekly but not to exceed six treatments in a three month period. Studies have shown that when people carry out this procedure faithfully, avoid the sun and apply sunscreen when they are in the sun, they get the best results. The procedure works on all skin types, but caution should be taken when treating sensitive skin or very dark skin tones.

all need? Yes, there will be obstacles, heartache, tough times, loss, but you have to find that place inside of you, that kicks you in the rear; and forces you to be bolder, about all of it! Believe in possible, pray for possible and then trust that you’re enough

the way? Maybe you never wrote it down in the first place. Perhaps, you’re holding on to it, in your head and heart; with everything you’ve got. Like all of the precious things we hold dear, nurture it, speak to it, in your own way, until it’s time to give it life. As you approach those milestones, I want to encourage you to give voice, to all that’s possible. Take baby steps, do whatever it takes, just do something; because the moment you do, you’re preparing for your breakthrough. No one said it‘d be easy, “Momma said there’d be days like this,” but we all know that it’s possible! A few years back, there was a movie called “Soul Surfer”. It’s about the young woman who lost her arm in a shark attack and her journey back to normalcy, and all that lies ahead. In one of the trailers, and in the movie, they show a scene that’s life changing. There’s a line in it, where her family and doctors are trying to prepare her for the tough road ahead. They want her to understand, that it won’t be easy. She says…..”I don’t need easy, I need possible!” WOW!! She said it with such conviction and determination, because she meant it, and so do I. Senior Living

The Importance of Volunteers By Melissa Murphy. Administrator at Pine Knoll Nursing & Rehab Cen-

ter, Carrollton, 770.832.8243, mmurphy@cypresshealthgroup.com In today’s world of budget shortfalls, cutbacks and layoffs, we here in the nursing home are the same as everyone else, striving to contain costs while maintaining quality of life for our residents. As a result of this, we are benefiting more from the efforts of our volunteers and wonderful family members. While volunteers and family members may not perform any kind of hands-on care for our residents, they can make a huge difference in a resident’s outlook and mood. Volunteers and family members help by visiting, sending the occasional letter or card, bringing their pets (who have been pre-approved and have proper vaccination records on file) or coming in to sing a song or play the piano. Nursing home residents benefit tremendously from volunteer manicurists, volunteer hair dressers, volunteer pastors and volunteer companions. Some nursing home residents have experienced so much loss in their lives – loss of independence, loss of loved ones, homes, and most significant, a loss of a sense of usefulness. For some residents, particularly those who do not have family close by, there is a sense of “What is left to enjoy?” Visitors! Many times what is needed to make a significant difference in a resident’s life is simple companionship, someone to talk to or to hold a hand. Readers, I encourage you to learn about your local nursing homes and assisted livings. Bring your children; let them see that there is nothing to be nervous about. While the residents in a nursing home may sometimes look

or act a little different, they are people just like you who can really benefit from the bright smile of a child or a dog’s happy waggly tail. There are a couple things to keep in mind about volunteering at your local nursing home. Right now, with the flu season upon us, we are discouraging large groups from visiting, particularly school groups. If you do visit, please make sure you are feeling healthy and are not having any illness or fever. Another is that you generally have to have a criminal background check, complete some basic paperwork and get a TB skin test if you plan to spend more than ten hours per week in the nursing home. For pets, check with the nursing home’s Activity Director for further guidelines. In most cases, though, pets are welcome. Adopting a nursing home resident is a great way for teens to get volunteer hours for school organizations and looks great on college applications. It is also a way for our active older adults to give back to their community and to see how fortunate they are to be active older adults, living an independent lifestyle. It is a gift. In these tough times that we keep hearing about, it costs nothing to adopt a nursing home resident and come to visit him or her. You will find that the emotional return on your investment is amazing.

Carrollton AARP Meeting The monthly meeting of the Carrollton Chapter of AARP is held the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Carrollton Senior Center, 220 West Avenue, Carrollton, at 2pm. Visitors are welcome to attend. Call Roberta Brown at 770.214.1525 for more information.

senior Tips for Choosing an Assisted-Living Home Ask to see the home’s state licensing survey, an assessment that usually includes inspections, audits, interviews, etc. Every state has an ALF licensing agency and all have some form of survey system for ensuring that certain standards of quality are met, according to the Assisted Living Federation of America. “Requirements vary from state to state about how often the surveys are conducted and how the public can access the reports, but no matter what state you live in, you should be able to ask the ALF for its most recent report, or obtain it from the licensing agency,” Johnsen says. The surveys will tell you if problems were found – or not – and what the ALF did to address them. Visit the ALF during non-business hours. Go before breakfast or after dinner – times when the administrators aren’t around. What’s the atmosphere? How do employees behave with the residents? “That’s a good time to talk to residents, too,” Johnsen says. Be a “mystery shopper,” he suggests. Pretend you’re just visiting the community – not scouting it out as a prospective customer. Ascertain how truly “homelike” the community is. In your own home, if you don’t feel like eating breakfast at 7:30am, you don’t have to. You can have breakfast at 10. You can get snacks when you want them. “Depending on what’s important to your loved one, there are potentially many rules that can affect how ‘at home’ a person feels,” Johnsen says.

New group forming for West Georgia seniors If you are an active senior in West Georgia, please join the Carroll County Active Seniors (62 to 92) on October 11 at 7pm at The Olive Tree Restaurant (150 Stone Street, Villa Rica) for an evening of fun, dinner and an entertaining play by the Community Alliance of Stage and Theater performers. This is a news organization for seniors 62 to 92 looking to make new friends and attend local social activities. If you are tired of eating alone or looking for someone to join you for social events, they are the group for you. Please visit their website Meetup - Carroll County Active Seniors or email mickigraham@bellsouth.net for more information.

Teaching Children the Benefits of Living Life Organized By Joyce Maxwell, Speaker, Designer, Organizer and Recent Recipient of the “Woman of the Year- 2013” by Douglas Co. Chapter ABWA. 770.312.0100, joyce@makeyourhomeahaven.com.

We’re not animals, and while there are times we wish we could hibernate, it is not an option for us humans. Once fall arrives we do find ourselves wanting to ‘’nest’’ a little more by creating cozy spaces we love to call home. Getting rid of unnecessary clutter will make your home feel cozier. These tips will get you started:

Clear the kitchen counters. Put away all those small appliances you rarely ever use, and if you’re hanging on to appliances you never use because ‘Aunt Sally’ gave them to you or because you paid good money for them, give yourself permission to let them go, someone else might actually ‘use them.’

Create centers in your kitchen. Storing your coffee, filters, mugs and coffee maker near each other will make your mornings go a lot smoother. Create a baking center to keep all baking related items such as mixer, mixing bowls, measuring cups and spoons. This will be especially helpful with the upcoming holidays.

Clean the dining room. Determine what should be stored in this space and remove everything else. That’s not to say the dining table can only be used for ‘’dining’’. If you use this area for scrapbooking or a place for the kids to study that’s fine, just make sure you create storage for the supplies you use when they’re not in use.

Create proper storage in your family room. Let’s face it, you just have to keep some things, but that doesn’t mean they have to become clutter. Use a basket to corral remotes. Have storage ottomans or baskets for toys and such so they can be put away at the end of the day.

Create a place for all paper related projects. Sort and file your paperwork. Use a small portable file box for everyday papers. I call this an Action File because this is where you will keep papers that come into your home daily that must be ‘acted upon. Label them accordingly: To Do; To Call; Discuss (with others); Pay…etc. Your files should be labeled to meet your unique needs.

Clean out your closets. Now is the perfect time of year to weed out clothing you no longer love or wear. If necessary, recruit a friend or family member to help you with this.

Sort the kids’ toys. Take time now to prepare for Christmas by helping your kids make decisions about the toys they already own. Donate the ones they no longer love or play with and discard those that are broken or have missing pieces.

Organize and declutter the bathroom. Throw away expired meds and combine all those half used shampoo and lotion bottles together. Donate all those shampoos you collected while on vacation to the local homeless shelter, you know’ in your heart of hearts that you will never use them.

Landscaping Fescue

JFall is in the air. It’s the time of year when you can sleep with your windows open, wear a light sweater in the morning, but be in short sleeves by lunch, and finally work in the garden without sweating buckets. I love this time of year. Just like spring, it’s all about drastic change. Summer and winter seem to ease in, sometimes you don’t even know they have arrived until, BAM! - they hit you. That first hot (or freezing cold) day makes you think, man when did the season change. Spring and fall come right after grueling weather so we anticipate them, perhaps even jump the gun when it comes to making changes. Ever done spring cleaning or fall purging? I know I seem to start earlier every year. I love to purge my closets in the fall to make room for all the new bulky fall/winter fashions. Spring for me means washing windows and airing out throw rugs. Spring and fall bring big changes to our landscapes as well. One garden task both seasons have in common is the annual color change out. We love getting new annuals in the spring, because it means bold bright colors and fantastic color displays. Most people are not as enthusiastic for fall color. Frankly, there is a perception that the only plants to install are ho hum pansies. Although pansies come in slew of colors, especially the truest blues out there, people still grumble. I think it has less to do with the color assortment and more to do with the lack of texture and height. Pansies, when planted with other companion plants, make things more interesting. This season try incorporating some other cool plants to make your flower beds stand out. To add depth to your pansy planting, try mixing things up with the pansies’ little sister, viola. Violas look remarkably like pansies, but the flowers are a fraction of the size. By combining these similar plants, you make the eye dance across the grouping. To increase the texture, try adding some parsley, Italian flat leaf or curly is fine. Parsley, in addition to flavoring your winter salads, adds a soft green mass that breaks up the monotony a solid pansy planting. To add height and additional texture to your flower border, we again look to the edible winter vegetables. Kale, cabbage, mustard, and chard offer some interesting leaf textures and colors to add height to the back of the border. In spring, they typically bolt with a mass of yellow flowers. These flower stocks can be left or removed depending on the formality of the planting. If you are still not excited about pansy planting season, let me offer up one more companion that can add some pizzazz to your planting. Snap dragons work great in the back of the border. They bloom in the fall, but their real show comes in the spring. Unfortunately they will be at the peak of blooming just about the time we will be installing spring annuals, making them hard to pull sometimes. However you choose to plant your flower borders, wait until the middle of October, as a late summer heat wave can stress your plants out.

The Family Connection Reality TV Done Right By Kerry Patuka, a degreed and certified educator, licensed minister and founder of Drive 5 Ministries.kerrydrive5@yahoo.com

The mention of reality TV often brings to mind the shows we won’t let our kids watch. There are definitely a slew of trashy, profane, ridiculous, demeaning and just plain inappropriate series being produced. Sometimes the number of these shows that kids, pre-teens and teens watch surprises me. I’m not sure if this is with parental permission or

not, but I guess that’s a topic for a different discussion. The truth is, there are some really great reality TV shows out there. As our children grow into pre-teens and teens, it can be a challenge to find TV shows that are appropriate and can interest the whole family. Believe it or not, reality TV can really be a great solution. So here are a few tips for doing reality TV right. First of all, “real” reality TV has been around since we’ve had TVs. News, sports and documentaries are a very different thing than what we consider Reality TV today. So make sure your kids understand the difference between “real” and “fake” reality. Allowing them to think that the stuff on even the good shows is all completely real is detrimental. I love that Phil Robertson is real about Duck Dynasty and the “skits that we come up with”. Understanding and discussing this leads to our next point. Take the time to really discuss the pros and cons of reality TV with them. Are people really special just because they’ve become famous on a reality TV? Would someone really do that? What would happen if people did that in their real lives? Would God want us to do something like that? Competition shows open a whole new range of topics. Was that fair? How would we respond if that happened to us? Would you do that challenge – why or why not? As a Christian, what would you have done differently? Find some shows your family will enjoy. Reality TV offers something for everyone. There are outdoor shows like Running Wild with Bear Gryllis or Raised Hunting. For those with a creative streak, some options are Design Star or America’s Got Talent. Chopped or Cake Boss are fun for those who like food shows. Check out the many shows on the History Channel, Outdoor Channel, National Geographic or Discovery. Youth are the stars in Master Chef Junior and Are you Tougher Than A Boy Scout? Finally, enjoy watching reality TV with them. Our family loves Duck Dynasty. My son and I enjoy cheering for our favorite teams on the Great Food Truck Race or guessing who’ll be out next on Food Network Star. Cut Throat Kitchen has us laughing at the crazy things the chefs have to do to get their food cooked. In a May 2013 Time Magazine article, James Poniewozik noted, “Reality TV is a big, diverse medium, of course: some of it is raunchy, some of it ugly, some obnoxious and some of it very, very good. In other words, it’s not unlike scripted TV. But another funny thing has happened over the past generation: reality TV has also become the new version, and maybe the last bastion, of primetime family viewing.” I encourage you to check out the wide variety of reality TV and find the ones that fit your family.

medical directory & guide Beat Your Bad Health Genes

By Saman Razzak, MD, Tanner Primary Care at Mirror

Lake, www.PrimaryCareMirrorLake.org, 770.812.3839 News reports of research involving health and heredity can make it sound like some health problems are inevitable. However, even if one or more of your close relatives has had cancer, diabetes or heart disease, that doesn’t mean you’re sure to have the same disease someday. Yes, you’re at higher risk; these chronic illnesses, like many others, do tend to run in families. But to a large degree, you can take control over your future. The secret to beating bad health genes is to begin with a realistic sense of your health risks. Once you know your risks, you’re on the way to learning the best ways to lower them. If you suspect you might be at risk for a chronic illness, don’t hide your head in the sand or live each day in fear of every ache, pain or skipped heartbeat. Instead, do some detective work. Find out if any close relatives — such as your mother, father, brother or sister — have a disease that may be genetically linked. For example: • A man whose father or brother had prostate cancer, or a woman whose mother or sister had breast cancer, runs an increased risk of having the same disease. Colorectal, pancreatic and other cancers also can run in families. This is because some cancers are linked to mutated genes in the body’s cells that can be passed from one generation to the next. • If a close relative has had a heart attack, especially before age 65, you

may be at an increased risk for coronary heart disease. • A family history of diabetes increases your risk for diabetes. In this case, the heightened risk is most likely due to both shared genes and similar lifestyle habits. • Take a close look at your other risk factors. A family history of heart disease becomes a more serious concern if you smoke, don’t get much physical activity or aren’t keeping your weight and cholesterol levels under control. The more risk factors you have, the more likely you are to get the disease. To confront these elevated risks, start by choosing the lifestyle change with which you know you’ll have the most success. Perhaps it’s shedding a few pounds, cutting back on fat or calories, lowering blood pressure or walking a little more each day. Any success you achieve becomes part of your learning process. You can apply what you’ve learned to the next change you’re ready to make. Here’s some advice for lifestyle changes that can help you lower your risk for cancer, heart disease, diabetes and many other chronic diseases:

• Quit smoking. If you’re a smoker, by far the best lifestyle choice for your health is to quit smoking. Ask your doctor for advice on kicking the habit.

• Stay physically active. Are you prepared to make physical activity a high priority and schedule it into your daily routine? If so, you have a pretty good chance for success. You don’t have to get in all your exercise at once. You can aim for 10 minutes here and 10 minutes there.

• Lose a few pounds. If you’re going to modify just one habit in order to lose weight, begin by reducing your portion sizes and cutting out snack foods and sugary sodas. This can bring relatively quick results.
