Most people in the Body of Christ DON’T CARE about the person living next door to them! Statistically, people who attend church would rather not have homosexuals, people with tattoos and people from a race other than their own, as members of their church. Put another way, the church doesn’t want the world in their pews and the non-church goers generally feel that the church is a club. This information comes from Eric Erickson of 10:2 Strategies, who compiled this data from reports received from a large main line denomination. And true to form, after calling 4,000 people here in Villa Rica, we were shocked by the results. Our team actually talked to about 1,000 people. (May the Lord bless them for their work). We invited people to a church service if they didn’t already have church home and offered prayer for all, regardless of their church affiliation. Nearly 80% of those who already attended a church said that they needed nothing by way of prayer. REALLY?!!!!!! NOTHING?!!!! We were not asking them to pray with us over the phone, rather that a team of people would pray off line. There is no wonder the nation is in the shape it is in. So as long as I’m good, I’m not concerned about anybody else? Is that how a walk with Christ goes? Let me get this right, if my needs are met, I am all out of needs? Wow! Well, there you have it. If this is your position, don’t complain about Washington D.C. ever again. Don’t gasp about the drug problem in America, and leave the gay community alone. To the extent that you are smug in your Christianity, it will be reflected in the lack of active concern for others. May the Lord have mercy on us. The survey was right, we don’t like them, and they don’t like us. Thank God Jesus died for everybody! Consider this - we who name Christ have a window open where grace is being poured out. During this time our hearts had better change towards love or it will be trouble when the Lord returns. In a literal sense, there are people who are dying in your neighborhood. We talked to some of them on the phone. It is easy to see the reason for the increase in wickedness in the last days. Where there is a lack of love and a lack of light, darkness prevails. (See Matthew 24:12 and Genesis 1:1-3) What’s more shocking than this information is that on Sunday morning people will go to church for a few hours, return home and never help anyone with their experience. The following week they will do the same. Throughout the year this will be repeated through Christmas, birthdays, graduations and the playoffs for all sports. Along the way, there will be complete disgust with way the world is going, and contempt for those who do evil. But Romans 14:12 reveals how God thinks, “Therefore, each of us will give an account of himself to God.” We are all being warned. Read Matthew 25 about the

Ten Virgins. 1 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of the virgins were foolish, and five were wise.” You, my friend are in one of those two categories. Everyone has an eternal destiny. By receiving Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you can inherit the right destiny. It cost Jesus his life to get you back, therefore please read the remainder of Matthew 25 so that you fully understand the heart of God on this matter and avoid the shock of a lifetime.

Making Sure Our Youth Are Financially Educated By GEMC Federal Credit Union, www.gemc.org, in partnership with Georgia Credit Union Affiliates. CONSIDER THIS: According to the Georgia Credit Union Affiliates (GCUA) 2013 Midyear Consumer Survey, more than 52 percent of respondents who have children said their kids do not have a savings account at a financial institution. Are parents doing enough to ensure that their children are prepared to manage their money when they reach adulthood? How can parents better equip their children to manage their finances responsibly? Are parents doing enough to ensure that their children are prepared to manage their money when they reach adulthood? How can parents better equip their children to manage their finances responsibly? According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, only 27 percent of young adults possess basic knowledge of interest rates, inflation and risk diversification. Additionally, parents are often unaware of what aspects of financial management are covered in school or even if those topics are taught. Tips to Teach Kids Money Management • Provide an allowance. Children learn by doing. Base the amount of the allowance on your child’s age, maturity and the cost of living in your area. • Encourage (or require) regular saving. Open a savings account in your children’s names. Then encourage them to put a percentage of everything they earn or receive as a gift into savings. Use this to teach them how to put money aside for big expenses. • Teach by example. It’s still the best teacher. Believe it or not, your children do pay attention to what you do, including how you manage your money. So, be sure to practice what you preach.

Self Determination Soap Box By Melissa Murphy. Administrator at Pine Knoll Nursing & Rehab Cen-

ter, Carrollton, 770.832.8243, mmurphy@cypresshealthgroup.com I read an article recently about a new smart phone app that enables people to save and carry their advance directives electronically. The new app is called My HealthCare Wishes and presumably you can download it from the app store on your phone. If you have been reading this column I am positive you know what an advance directive is and that you even know that in Georgia, ours is called the “Georgia Advance Directive for Health Care”. Right? Right. I’m proud of you! Now that you know what it is and why you should have one, don’t forget to give a copy to your doctor, your significant other and/or whomever you have appointed to be your agent along with keeping a copy of it on your new smart phone app. In the world of rehabilitation and long term care we are entrusted with the mission of making sure you are taken care of according to your wishes and in a manner that preserves your dignity to the extent possible. Without direction from you we (and you) are at the mercy of your family members. Most family members are by far the most wonderful people on Earth and absolutely are on the same page with you about what your wishes would be. By completing a Georgia Advance Directive for Health Care you are simply taking the guesswork out of it. However, in contrast, without clear instruction, there are some family members who are unable to make decisions and unable to put themselves in your shoes and figure out what is best for YOU. With the best will in the world, they are unable to rise above their own beliefs, their own histories, struggles, doubts, fears and concerns.

Senior

I have discussed before in this column that we by regulation in this care setting are the defenders of your right to make decisions for yourself. We cannot force you as a resident of a care facility to do anything you don’t want to do. Yes, we can educate you, cajole, beg, plead (and are not above occasional harmless bribery) to an extent but we can’t MAKE you do anything. Family members have a really hard time with that. We get lots of phone calls demanding that we make Mom take a bath, make Dad take his medicine, make Aunt Susie participate in activities, make Uncle Jimmy stop eating candy. We spend a lot of time explaining that we really can’t. You are in charge, even when it is a life or death matter. Sure, we can offer all the options but we can’t decide for you and neither can your family members unless you give them that authority OR unless you get sick and can’t tell us yourself and didn’t leave instructions. It’s a tricky business, this taking care of people who need it but also respecting their rights. Just because you are sick or even confused sometimes doesn’t mean you don’t have the right to assert your will. Don’t forget that and make sure no one else does either – state your wishes clearly ahead of time. Appoint one person as your Health Care agent – and designate a back up. Don’t Retire to Expire Communicating With Your Partner

By Bob Bradshaw, Certified Retirement Coach, coachbobb@comcast.net, dontretiretoexpire.com How many times have you and your wife, partner or your children sat down and talked about your retirement? Chances are it has never happened, or was a brief conversation, with no real conclusion in the end. One of my interviewees said that she was not ever going to do to her children what

past. If we don’t think this will happen, we are fooling ourselves. Think about it and talk about how these things will affect you. Talk about the changes you already know will come at some time in the future. Talking about it now will save you much anguish in the future. Have you and your mate really talked lately on the subject of your interests and things you both want to happen in your upcoming retirement. I don’t mean a casual conversation, but real and honest discussions. What usually happens is that these casual conversations may occur but with no real conclusions reached. I cannot overly emphasize how important it is to have these talks.

her mother did to her. She explained how after her father had passed, her mother counted on her for all of her mother’s decisions on a day to day basis. She became responsible for everything having to do with her mother. She went on to explain the she became responsible for her mother, and her own growing children. It got to be too much pressure and caused her to become stressed and almost unable to function for her family. When her mother passed she sat down with her husband, and now grown up children, to let them know that this situation would not be repeated with her or her husband. As a result she felt there was a clear understanding of her wishes. This was one thing she would spare her children. This was the first time I had heard of this situation being taken care in this manner. What it did was lay out a plan to relieve her children of making the kind of decisions she had to make for her mother. It ended up being a family decision on how things would proceed with everyone involved in the conversation and discussion. By doing things in this manner there were few things left unclear. The decision to retire is usually made by the breadwinner of the family, usually the male. He will lay out the financial planning and so the decision as to most major components of when, where and how the retirement years will be spent. Where they will retire, what activities will prevail and schedule of travel, etc. The wife is usually consulted as a courtesy and not on an equal decision making partner. When you are going to make decisions of this magnitude there should be honest give and take. Not just one partner going along with the decision, but actively having a give and take now, not later. Age makes a great difference in the ability to hop on a plane, or trains and maybe drive the five or six hours with the frequency once done in the past. One of the things not taken into consideration is that as we age we lose the physical capacity to do many of the things we routinely did in our recent

Organizing Tips

Trading Clutter for Peace of Mind By Joyce Maxwell, Speaker, Designer, Organizer and Recent Recipient of the “Woman of the Year- 2013” by Douglas Co. Chapter ABWA. 770.312.0100, joyce@makeyourhomeahaven. com.

Summer, how quickly it slips away! School seems to start back earlier every year making our summers feel like they’re getting shorter. The good news is, once the kids are back in school your thoughts turn to home and all those tasks you’ve let slide during the busy summer months. Often when you’re busy, it’s easy to allow clutter to accumulate, even if your normal tendencies are to be organized. It’s easy to ignore clutter when you’re on the run, but when things slow down you know you have to deal with it for your own peace of mind. Take a few moments and look around - do you have some areas that need special attention? I call them hot spots. A hot spot is anywhere clutter tends to gather for an extended period of time. As your taking a look around ask yourself these questions:

Why am I allowing clutter to accumulate here? Just making yourself aware of why you’re doing something can often help you find a solution. Take a look around your home and scrutinize each area. This will lead your to my next point...

What is the quickest way to solve this problem? Often it’s just creating a proper storage solution. Solving the problem can be as simple as hanging a few hooks on the wall or adding a basket with a lid to corral the clutter. You can find beautiful, decorative baskets and boxes at local discount stores that allow you to maximize your space. Teaching your children to collect their toys at the end of the day and place them in a basket tucked into the corner of the family room will not only make your life easier, but it will train them to have good organizing skills as well.

Lastly ask, “Am I making it easy for my children to get and stay organized?” Allow your children to have input on how their rooms are organized and they will have a greater tendency to keep them that way. Make it easy for them to put things away by placing hooks and shelves at their height and having designated areas for different types of toys (Legos, doll accessories, etc.) Consider using a color coded system, which will be as easy for the little ones as the older children. If you have several areas that need attention; focus on one area at a time. Remember, it didn’t get this way overnight! Take mail for example, if you’re in the habit of dropping it on the first available surface, for now concentrate on placing it where it belongs each time you bring it in or even better go ahead and file what needs to be filed, throw away junk mail and get bills ready to go. Hopefully, I’ve given you some ideas that will inspire you to start the process of creating a home that is a haven of rest for you and your family. Until next month, God bless and keep taking those baby steps to a clutter free life.

Landscaping

Consider an Irrigation System By Kate Wright, who owns Bloom’n Gardens Landscape. She is a degreed Botanist, Certified Arborist, and Certified Pesticide Applicator, & Georgia Certified Landscape Professional, www.bloomngardens.com • 404.314.1474

Have you been feeling the 90+ degree temperatures lately? I know our landscapes have. Well, it is August and we are all beginning to show a little heat stress, looking tired and wilty. In your landscape, dull, limp leaves are a sure sign your garden is suffering. As the yard caretaker, you may be feeling a little heat stressed too and neglecting your landscape. Try not to succumb to the, “Hey it’s August, what is there to do in the landscape besides watch it melt?” mentality. I am here to tell you that there is plenty to do that will not only help to improve your landscape year round, but it will begin to look better immediately. Most of your tasks this month will revolve around water. In an environment like ours, an irrigation system is crucial to keeping a landscape looking its best. It is human nature that you will not water your landscape nearly enough if you try to do it by hand, plus the best watering goes on while you are still all snug in your bed. Plants that are watered after the sun comes up have a higher probability of scorching under the intense rays of the sun. They also are more susceptible to fungus when watered at

Nathan Mitchell of Mitchell Appliance makes Dealerscope 40 UNDER 40 Nathan Mitchell, Supervisor at Mitchell Appliance Company in Douglasville, made the Dealerscope 40 UNDER 40 group this year. This accomplishment is for appliance and electronic dealers that work in the industry. Only 40 people are selected nationwide each year. Nathan grew up and still lives in Douglas County and has been in the industry for 20 years. His job responsibilities include deliveries and installations and assisting in day-to-day operations and service. Nathan loves having the ability to spend time with his family and assisting the community with their needs. His hobbies are hunting and fishing. He considers his father and grandfather his heroes. His grandfather, Frank Eugene Mitchell, built the business from the ground up and took pride in serving the community, and his father, Michael Frank Mitchell, raised him with a strong work ethic and took the time to teach Nathan that God, family and country are the foundation of the great country in which we live. Nathan is an authorized GE service provider. He also serves as Chief Deputy Coroner for his county, where he conducts death investigations and assists families during the most devastating times of their lives. He currently sits on the Child Fatality Review Board for Douglas County and is involved in preventing child abuse. He is active in Douglasville’s Masonic Lodge #289. He has been married for 12 years, is the proud father of two girls, and a member of Ephesus Baptist Church. Mitchell Appliance is located in downtown Douglasville at 6701 E. Strickland Street. the wrong time of day. August is a great time to consult with an irrigation company about installing a new system for your home. Already have an irrigation system? Is it fairly new or has it been in for a while? Just like with cell phones, the technology has changed considerably, making today’s irrigation systems much more water smart. You don’t have to start from scratch though, most times a good technician can offer up suggestions to improve your existing system. Simple fixes like adjusting spray patterns, removing obstacles, raising heads and unclogging nozzles can make a huge difference in how your irrigation system function. August is also a great time to repair drainage problems. We definitely have not been lacking in the rain department this year, and many homeowners have discovered that their landscape is beginning to erode a bit, or they are beginning to build unwanted pools in their backyard. Drainage issues can develop over time or seem to jump up quite quickly, in either case they can be quite a nuisance. Extremely wet areas can breed mosquitoes, making it practically intolerable to be outside. Erosion creates ruts and makes it difficult to keep mulch in place leaving your landscape looking less than spectacular. In the most extreme cases, a drainage problem can threaten your castle. No matter what your drainage problem is, there is a solution that can be crafted utilizing careful investigation and practical experience. Solving drainage problems can be tricky and one of those tasks best left to a professional.

The Family Connection Breaking a Bad Habit By Kerry Patuka, a degreed and certified educator, licensed minister and founder of Drive 5 Ministries. kerrydrive5@yahoo.com

Do you ever find yourself frustrated with a bad habit your child has developed? It might be an attitude, an action or a choice of words, but whatever it is, you’ve reached the point where you’ve had enough and it’s time to break that habit. Before you get angry, yell or dole out a punishment, stop and pray.

Pray for truth to understand which type of habit has been developed and for wisdom to help them break it. I’m basing the names of these “issues” not on the child’s behavior, but on the parental action that is needed. 1 – Modeling Issue 2 – Investigation Issue 3 – Education Issue 4 – Discipline Issue Modeling Issue: It’s easy for us to blame friends, kids at school or characters on a TV show as poor role models that our child is imitating. Unfortunately for us, we are the biggest role models in their lives. So when you see that annoying habit, consider if you are setting that precedent. Does your child complain a lot? Does he leave his shoes lying around the house? Does she worry that she doesn’t look good in any of her clothes? These are just a few examples of words, actions or attitudes that our children may pick up from us. We might not even realize that we are doing these things and that’s why we need to pray and ask God to show us the truth, so we can help them and ourselves. With little ones, just make the change now for yourself and they’ll probably follow suit. With older kids, own up to your bad habit, discuss it with your child and make a plan to break this habit together. Investigation Issue: Some habits have a deeper root cause and we really need the Lord to show us the real problem. We need to observe, ask questions, listen and read between what they say to hear their hearts. Frustration, fear, anxiety or misunderstandings can lead to bad habits. If we don’t understand the underlying issue, breaking the bad habit will be very hard or this habit will stop and another one will start. Education Issue: When our children are small, it’s natural for us to correct and teach them when they misstep, but as they get older, we have a tendency to assume that they should just know better. If we don’t continue educating them along the way, bad habits can develop. It can be surprising the things we think they know or understand, but they don’t. If after we explain why it is not acceptable and teach them a better way and they still continue with the bad habit, then it becomes a discipline issue. Discipline Issue: Some bad habits are heart issues and we need to be firm to help them change this behavior. We discipline because we want to disciple and grow them into godly young men and women. The longer we allow bad habits to continue, the harder they are to break. We can’t expect out kids to break these habits on their own. It requires a lot from us too. We must be prayerful, honest, graceful, vigilant, firm and much more; that’s why we can’t do it on our own either. We need to rely on God to help our children and us to make the changes we need to and to form new, positive habits.

Pet of the Month - Autumn

Autumn is a wonderful girl. She is about a year old and has a short blonde coat. She is very playful – you can see the twinkle in her eyes when she gets into the play pose waiting for you to chase her or throw the ball. Autumn would be considered large because of her height and length, and she will probably gain a little weight as she matures, but she will never be a large-boned or heavy dog. Her cage card identifies her as being part Husky, but she looks more like a Labrador Retriever. She loves to go on walks and is well-behaved on a leash, and her favorite thing seems to be interacting with people. You can see additional photos of Autumn on the Carroll County Humane Society’s website, www.carrollcountyhumane.org. Just click on “Adopt a Shelter Pet” on the homepage. If you would like to find out more about her, you can visit the shelter or call them at 770.214.3590. The Carroll County Animal Shelter is located at 251 Automation Drive. They are open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm and Saturday from 8am to 4pm. All of the animals in adoption at the shelter have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated for rabies and distemper, and tested for heart worm (dogs) or feline AIDS/leukemia (cats). They have also been microchipped and come with 30 days of pet health insurance. Autumn is only one of many wonderful dogs and cats available for adoption at the Carroll County Animal Shelter. There are all sizes and breeds and range from puppy or kitten to seniors.

Psychologist Corner

The Importance of Reading to Children from Birth By Rebecca S. Blakeman, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist - Adolescent Child Specialty Services, 4935 Stewart Mill Road, 404.310.1161, rblakemanphd@yahoo.com The American Academy of Pediatrics has recently recommended that pediatricians encourage parents to read to children from birth, as this has been found to be associated with improved language skills, and also offers emotional and psychological benefits for children. The more words a child hears during their first 3 years of life, the better their language skills are likely to be. This is why talking to infants and toddlers is extremely important. Reading offers another way to help ensure infants and toddlers hear a multitude of words. When reading, it is important to read with expression, as this also helps the development of language skills. When parents read to their children, they are creating a positive interaction with numerous benefits. Reading to a child usually involves sitting in close proximity to the child, and often involves the child sitting in the reader’s lap, such that physical nurturing is also occurring. When parents read to a child, they are giving that child undivided attention, which is extremely important with our hectic schedules. The habit of reading daily, particularly if reading occurs at a specific time each day, creates a routine that fosters stability and security in young children. In addition, developing

the habit of daily reading in early childhood may increase the chances that the child will enjoy reading as a recreational activity when they are able to read on their own. We know that reading to children exposes them to more language, which benefits language development and early reading skills. However, it is important to note that for children who have dyslexia, simply reading to them will not be enough to result in reading skills; it is still important to read to them, as this helps other language skills and will assist with later reading comprehension, but it will not resolve dyslexia.

church Traveling Well: Planning for Safety and Health By Rajesh Mathew, MD. Dr. Mathew is boardcertified in infectious diseases with Infectious Disease Specialists of West Georgia, a Tanner Medical Group practice. www.InfectiousDiseasesOfWestGa.org, 770.812.5837 Traveling domestically or abroad can be a very exciting and wonderful experience. Even so, it is important to remember that while traveling you must take care of your body’s needs. Whether traveling inside the United States or outside, it is always recommended to carry not only an adequate supply of your medications, but an emergency surplus. Meet with your medical providers about your anticipated needs. Have your itinerary handy while at the doctor’s office to help your provider help you stay as healthy as possible while traveling. When carrying medications on a plane, be aware of the latest Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulations. For example, some medications must travel within their original containers. For the latest information and policies, contact your travel agent or airline. Also, if you have any chronic conditions or major allergies, consider wearing medical bracelets or other means of relating this information in case of emergency. Traveling to foreign countries presents some particular issues, namely a more immediate concern with your vaccination history and appropriate supplements. Your destination will determine what kind or how many vaccinations will be either recommended or required. It is very important to have a detailed conversation with your doctors. While your primary care provider can assist you in most of your needs, you might consider consulting a specialist who may be able to help you more specifically (especially if you wish to travel to underdeveloped nations that require further vaccinations as precaution) because of some vaccinations require up to six weeks to offer protection. Make your appointments at least two months before your planned departure date. As a general precaution, expectant mothers and those who are breastfeeding should not receive any vaccinations that contain live strains or should reconsider travel to regions where such vaccines may be necessary. Some common vaccinations for traveling outside the United States include: Yellow fever, Typhoid fever, Polio, Cholera, Hepatitis A and B, Flu, Japanese encephalitis, Meningococcal disease, Pneumococcal disease, Rabies, Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Chicken pox, Tetanus For additional information and guidelines, consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Their Web site contains a special “Travelers’ Health” section at www.cdc.gov/travel. Once on the ground, it is generally advisable to avoid consuming any raw vegetables or undercooked meats to avoid exposure to foreign bacteria that could cause traveler’s diarrhea and other complications. Also when traveling, it is best to avoid any liquids that are not bottled or otherwise prepackaged. Most water — including ice — is unsafe for consumption. If you must consume domestic water, make sure that it is boiled before being used. When in doubt of a water source or cooking source, avoid it. This includes any street or food vendors. The opportunity to travel is priceless but so is your health. With a little forethought and some cooperative planning with medical professionals, you’ll be able to travel safe, well and happily.

Local church seeking prayer requests Kingdom Dominion Church is asking the community to allow the church to pray for their needs. If you have a prayer request, they may call the secure Prayer Line at 770.459.3600 and leave their request. Callers may leave their contact information if they would like a call back.

Are We Better Than They? By Right from the Heart Ministires, info@rfth.org I love what C.S. Lewis said about loving your enemies. He says, “Do not waste your time bothering with whether you love your neighbor. Act as if you did.” As soon as we do this, we find one of the great secrets – when we are behaving as if we love someone, we will presently come to love them.” In other words, this kind of love has nothing to do with feelings, has nothing to do with ‘liking.’ It has everything to do with ‘action.’ Then, amazingly, our feelings begin to be about love. But even more – Jesus wants the Christian life to be distinct. He wants us to be different from the world. He goes on to say, “So if you only love those who love you, how are you different from anybody else?” If you’re reading this and you are a conservative Christian and only love those who are conservative Christians like you, how are you different from anybody else on earth? If you are a liberal Christian and you despise conservative Christians, how are you different from anybody else? There’s nothing distinct in your life when you only love who you consider to be lovable! Hey, the Mafia loves their families! They are loyal to their friends! If we just love our family and friends that are part of our little world that we live in, we are not “getting it” as followers of Christ. We are to be distinct. We are to be radically different in our approach to those who do not think like we do, who do not live like we do, who sometimes bring great harm to us and great harm to society as a whole. Jesus wants us to be radically different because when we are, it’s amazing how God can use our lives to get the attention of those who are hostile to us and to the faith. Radical Christian Living – radically changes the world.
