Welcome

I

P.S. PRETTY PLANNER

have always preferred setting the mood to planning the menu when hosting a dinner party. I’m a distracted cook, and I often leave the food prep to the last minute. I once concocted an elaborate centerpiece with my favorite garden blooms, punctuated by sprigs of rosemary and other herbs intended for the meal, which resulted in a disastrously under-seasoned chicken—but a wonderfully fragrant tablescape. On another occasion, I spent days tenting my porch for an outdoor dinner party, complete with hanging lanterns and layered rugs. I have no idea what I served, but I fondly recall lingering over whatever it was, surrounded by dear friends and serious fabric yardage. I host less often these days, but it’s still important to me that my family sits down to dinner together whenever we can—and I still put effort in o making it feel special. Even on a weeknight I’ll light candles or snip fl wers in between seasoning the chicken. With the fall holidays fast approaching, I do anticipate hosting one or two large gatherings, which is why I wanted this issue to feature several inspiring dining rooms. I love that each design emphasizes ambience, no matter the occasion. That leaves plenty of time to plan the menu—or at least craft an elaborate centerpiece. Happy hosting! SENTIMENTAL SOPHISTICATION

A Westport family’s cherished Thos. Moser dining table and chairs, antique Murano-glass sconces, and an antique painting were the basis for a dining room refresh by architect and interior designer Carol Kurth. “Our goal was to make the furniture feel cohesive and part of a more modern-classic-traditionalist aesthetic,” says

Without Marco, it wouldn’t be Clarke.

Spend an hour at a Clarke Showroom and one thing is clear: your time with a Clarke Consultant is the most valuable part of your kitchen journey. While they’re not designers, these are the people designers call on when it comes to appliance recommendations. You won’t buy anything at Clarke, so there’s simply no pressure. What you can do is compare more Sub-Zero, Wolf and Cove models than anywhere in New England. And explore a living portfolio of kitchens created by the region’s top designers. You’ll leave inspired with new knowledge to make your appliance selections with confidence. With a global luxury perspective informed by living in the Seychelles, Marco Barallon is perhaps the savviest appliance expert in the Northeast. For over 20 years, architects, designers and homeowners have relied on his expertise.

A modern light fixtu e that’s in contrast with the classic table creates a new dynamic mood. It adds sparkle, drama, and reflectivit .” Kurth chose the same shade of gray for the existing wall paneling, a new buffet a ea, and a new butler’s pantry. Both the buffet and pantry featu e metallic finishes that pl y off the dining oom’s flo al-petal light fixtu e: the buffet boasts graphic custom stamped-metal backsplash, while gold metallic hexagon tiles and burnished-brass hardware add another layer of sheen. ARTISTIC SPIRIT

A young New York City family tapped Lisa Schwert Pohlschroeder of Innate Studio to design their country house in Westport, where they often host friends and family. “The primary objective was to make it feel welcoming,” says the designer. “When it came to the dining room, we wanted it to work for everyday family use as well as dinners for twelve people.” The turn-of-the-twentieth-century landmarked residence,

DARK & DRAMATIC

When architect and designer Elana Tenenbaum Cline of Carta Creatives moved her family from Brooklyn to a center-hall colonial in Fairfield, she didn’ forget her city roots. “The dining room feels a bit like a dimly lit restaurant in Brooklyn,” says the architect, a self-proclaimed minimalist. “Most of the house is light, bright, and airy, but the dining room is the inverse. H&T GOOD BONES

A classic raised ranch that was largely destroyed by a tornado in 2020, the rebuilt house now comprises three stories: a garage and storage area, the main living space, and a top floor that holds his and hers offices, guest suites, and a wine room. Designer Patricia Miller won a 2023 Westport Green Building Award for the home.

hat do you do when a tornado rips the roof off your house, taking par of the second floor with it The new owners of this Westport home used the rare occurrence, a byproduct of 2020’s Hurricane Isaias, to take a second look at their renovation plans for the waterfront home. Luckily, they hadn’t moved in yet, relates Patricia M. Miller, who spearheaded the design team charged with expanding and updating the house. The

disaster, which somehow left nearby houses unscathed, gave Miller and builders Marc and Joseph Fuscaldo the opportunity to create what essentially became a brand-new

Zoning regulations demanded that the house, a two-story raised ranch built in the 1960s, keep to its original footprint, but the homeowners wanted to expand the two-car garage. “There was an office in back of the g age, so I knocked out the wall to create a tandem four-car garage,” Miller explains. “It was as simple as that.” Less simple were FEMA regulations that meant the garage level was no longer suitable for living space. “It didn’t count as a story,” Miller says. “It could only be used for storage.” She devised a plan to move the front door to the second level, then added a third level, working with zoning laws to satisfy height restrictions. Timeless by Design: Designing Rooms with Comfort, Style, and a Sense of History is the debut book from Boston’s Nina Farmer. The 240-page tome features nine projects, including a stone-walled 1930s colonial in Westport, Connecticut, a midcentury–inspired beach bungalow on Martha’s Vineyard, and Farmer’s own 1850s Federal-style brownstone in Boston’s Beacon Hill. Farmer imbues each house with a sense of place and often uses one-ofa-kind and vintage objects to create highly unique spaces for her clients. rizzoliusa.com

A spare room transforms into a space that bridges quiet conversation with rollicking jam sessions. BY ROBERT KIENER

Using a rich palette of dark blues, grays, and tans, interior designer Christina Roughan renovated this New Canaan home office into a multipurpose room that includes cozy sitting areas for overflow party guests, a wall covered with photos of rock and roll icons who have inspired the guitar-playing owner, and a desk for getting work done.

He wanted a combination office a sitting room that would be more ABOVE: As Roughan explains, “Strong imagery mixed with textures and a wood-veneer coffered ceiling help create a calm yet powerful presence, while numerous decorative small pieces, such as the KleinReid ceramic vase on the coffee table, resonate with the interior.” LEFT: A vintage Debbie Harry black-and-white poster, found at a flea market, crowns a fireplace painted, like the rest of the room, Benjamin Moore Gray in a satin finish.

comfortable and reflect his myriad in erests and tastes. “It needed some personality and that was a challenge that excited both of us,” remembers Roughan, who had completed several other interior design projects at the client’s traditional Georgian home. Where to start? “The first thing I noticed in his office was a collection of quisite guitars that were stacked up against a wall,” says Roughan. “When I asked him if he played, his eyes lit up, and he told me he did. Then he added that he’d even been in a rock and roll band years ago. Bingo! I had my design theme.” After agreeing on a color palette of cozy, rich, deep grays, blues, and tans, Roughan suggested that the formerly empty walls be covered with a selection of black-and-white photographs of musicians that appealed to her client. “He loved the idea,” says Roughan, who also boasts musical roots: she sang with the New York City-based funk-rock band Swelter in the 1990s. Roughan sent the homeowner loads of portraits to choose from, and he settled on a who’s who of rock and roll legends, from Keith Richards and Slash to Freddie Mercury, Elton John, and, in pride of place over the new Saint

H&T THINGS WE LOVE

Shell Seeker

BY LYNDA SIMONTON

Renowned interior designer Mary McDonald (remember Million Dollar Decorators?) indulges her love of coquillage with the release of her Shell Grotto wallpaper for Schumacher. The vibrant two-paneled set features a mosaic seashell design and comes in four colorways that allow for a range of looks. The paper’s murallike effect is achi ved with a painterly execution and strong geometric patterns that transport you to a European castle or villa. McDonald introduced the new product at the 2023 Kips Bay

Decorator Show House New York, where she crafted a luxurious bedroom retreat. The designer imagined the room’s occupant as a nineteenth-century woman who loves travel and collecting. The paper served as a bold backdrop to a layered room that featured richly colored upholstered pieces, antiques, and artful accessories. No doubt McDonald’s design proved there’s no need for trepidation about the use of such a transformative paper. Schumacher, Boston Design Center, schumacher.com Photograph by Nick Sargent

We all see the world differently. For Greenwich’s Lisa Warren, that diff rence has a name: grapheme-color synesthesia. The trait causes her to experience numbers, letters, concepts, even days of the week as color, with feelings attached to the hue. So whereas you might see Monday in your mind as letters on a calendar, she sees it as layers of light blue. And even though you might think of blue as somber, Warren says, “I view it as freshness, clarity, and optimism.” At the Rhode Island School of Design, where she earned her BFA, and Yale University, where she earned an MFA, Warren demonstrated talent in so many aspects of art-making—line, color, composition—that a professor rightly predicted it would take her longer to discover her visual voice. And her synesthesia meant that she find multiple colors, or colors positioned close together, too overwhelming, like several people shouting at once or the noise of city traffic. s a result, she has gradually refined h r technique into something like a genius version of paint-by-numbers. Look closely at Warren’s acrylic-oncanvas painting of a sycamore tree, for instance, and you see the peeling bark,

the moss, the shadows cast by light through the leaves. But she doesn’t combine colors on her brush, or layer one color over another, the way other artists might. Instead she creates monochromatic shapes. Close up, they look like diff rent-colored amoebas. Pull back and, like the pixels on your TV screen, they blend, interact, compete, and move. None of Warren’s colors literally match the actual colors of the bark, moss, or shadows, but rather they do what good art ought to do: communicate a feeling. Warren has brought her unique eye to a range of subjects over the years: family members, houses, fl wers. Lately she’s been drawn to trees, many of which have been blue, a shade she experiences as “full of possibility and hope.” Now she wants to paint a tree series that explores other feelings and colors, such as “the slight grief and foreboding” of reds and oranges. Or as she sees it, “more Wednesday and Sunday.” EDITOR’S NOTE: To see more of Lisa Warren’s work, visit lisawarrenstudio.com.

alongside European antiques. She works with makers willing to collaborate on unique colorways and finishes—li e Swedish blue, creamy putty, and spring green. “I find artists willing o make small runs for me in Italy, France, London, and all over,” Piccirelli says. A name for the shop remained elusive until Piccirelli’s husband suggested thumbing through favorite books for inspiration, and that’s when she reconnected with Lucy Honeychurch from A Room with a View. Not coincidentally, Tuscany, where the E. M. Forster novel begins, was also Piccirelli’s firs stop when sourcing inventory. Like the headstrong heroine’s agenda, the shop features items with depth and substance to create a life well lived. In keeping with Salisbury’s character, Honeychurch Home skews classic.

“I don’t follow fads,” Piccirelli explains. “Instead, I find things that a e timeless. That’s better for the artisanal environment.” Honeychurch Home also strives

The kids may have been enjoying camp and idle days this summer, but the design industry was as busy as ever. Here’s what’s happening. Gault Family Companies has been celebrating its 160th anniversary all year, from the launch of a new website to a surge in community involvement. The revamped gault familyco.com includes an anniversary page featuring a business timeline and historical photos. New services and products in the business’s energy and stone divisions also mark the occasion. “One of our sustaining principles has been to continually evolve to meet the ever-changing needs of the communities we serve,” says Sam Gault, fifth-g neration president of Gault Family Companies. To thank the community for its ongoing support, the Gault team will perform 160 Acts of Gault, from memorable customer experiences to taking part in charitable events and volunteer opportunities. It may not be a century-plus anniversary, but it is significant all the same. Bevan & Company is celebrating one year at its downtown Greenwich location on 123 Mason Street. Congratulations! Speaking of Greenwich, the American Society of Landscape Architects named Greenwichbased Renée Byers to its Council of Fellows. Byers will be honored at an investiture ceremony at the organization’s annual meeting in Minneapolis, Minn., in October. Connecticut-based Ring’s End is expanding. The building supplies company recently purchased eleven Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine paint stores. Previously operated under various monikers, the stores have all been renamed

Johnson Paint | A Ring’s End Brand. The brand’s flagship location on Bos on’s Newbury Street features a second-floor design center specializing in designer fabrics, wallcoverings, and window treatments. Decorating your home has never been so easy. In other acquisition news, ProSource of Stamford transferred ownership to Jaz Kahlon and Divya Andhavarapu. The new owners aim to work with the existing team to elevate the wholesale floorin , kitchen, and bath showroom into a customer-centric haven of inspiration, service, and top-notch design-and-build solutions for trade professionals. It’s easier than ever for homeowners to create exceptional outdoor living spaces now that Glengate Company has launched an outdoor furnishings shop in Wilton. The expansive showroom carries various brands including JANUS et Cie, Sutherland Furniture, and Summer Classics. Call to schedule an appointment now to prepare your decks, patios, and porches for spring. Two well-known Connecticut ceramicists announced some exciting news. Frances Palmer exhibited her terracotta pottery at de Gournay Paris in celebration of Paris Design Week. Palmer’s pottery was paired with de Gournay’s dynamic Mahal Garden wallpaper. “The vases were inspired by shapes I saw in the Antikenmuseum Basel, which I had recently visited,” says Palmer. “I was also thinking of Cy Twombly sculptures and [Constantin] Brâncuși pedestals.” Closer to home, Westporter Lauren Kaplan has been busy traveling back and forth to Manhattan. You can find a collection of the artist’s bespoke ceramics at the recently launched BR Home showroom in SoHo and on Bergdorf Goodman’s trendsetting seventh floo .

Bevan & Company 1

B

evan & Company is an interior design firm based in Greenwich, CT, specializing in residential interior renovations and design. Since opening her eponymous firm in 2016, Bevan Talbott’s work has included a range of projects throughout Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Texas, Missouri, and California. Whether taking on a full-scale renovation project or updating tired decor, her approach to design is always the same: create something the clients will fall in love with. Bevan has become known for her fresh and restrained take on traditional interiors, blending clients’ existing heirlooms with new pieces to create a lived-in, collected look. Her spaces feel luxurious without being pretentious and family friendly without compromising on style. Bevan specializes in a transitional or “clean traditional” aesthetic,

blending classic elements with clean lines and a timeless palette. Her full-service offerings include all aspects of interior design, from the initial walk-through to the final fluff of the pillow, including space planning and drawings, custom furniture and window treatments, custom millwork and stonework, kitchen and bath design, and contract administration and project management. All of which is possible thanks to the close relationships Bevan has developed over the years with wonderful vendors and tradespeople. Bevan currently lives in Greenwich with her two sons and their two cats, Bandit and Duke, but credits her success to her Midwest roots and time spent living between Missouri, California, London, and Connecticut.

The design becomes more casual in the family room, which Ruderman outfi ted with durable fabrics that will stand up to the antics of three young boys. “Having three boys speaks for itself,” says the

homeowner, laughing. “I wanted something as nice as possible while still being livable. Linda has three sons, so she’s kind of an expert on designing a house for boys.” Speaking of those boys, they got in on the design process, too. The homeowners asked Ruderman to complete most of the heavy lifting, including the

The genesis of Phoebe Russell’s overall design scheme, which is marked by earthy color tones and light oak wood paired with black accents, took shape in the living room. Updated for modern living, the home has five bedrooms and a family-friendly layout, complete with a mudroom on the far left and a three-season room on the far right. Primed for lounging by day and games at night, the living room is multifunctional: “I wanted cozy yet airy,” Russell says of the space. “That comes down to creating a good furniture layout.”

move to Connecticut wasn’t on the table. Pegi and Adam had met in San Francisco and moved to Brooklyn in the spring of 2019. While on the hunt for a house in Carroll Gardens, their world shifted: the pandemic hit, and they were expecting their first child.

“We had to make a call on where we were going to live,” remembers Pegi. “I woke up one morning and said to Adam, ‘We’re moving to New Canaan, and I’m having this baby at Stamford Hospital.’ ” Time was of the essence, so the couple rented a place while they scoured the listings. A week after their bundle of joy arrived, they found it: “We both walked in the front door and immediately could imagine raising our daughter here,” says Pegi. “We could picture hosting the holidays here.”

“All the woods throughout the house are consistently light oak.”—Interior designer Phoebe Russell “Here” turned out to be a 1764 colonial that had recently been gutted and updated. It was a 5,300-square-foot blank slate—a daunting task considering the scope of the project (“We had like two chairs,” says Pegi with a laugh) and their hectic lives as new parents. As luck would have it, Adam’s grad school buddy is married to Belmont, Massachusetts-based designer Phoebe Russell, founder of Lovejoy Interiors. Adam’s wish when they closed on the house? He wanted at least one room designed by her. That one-room wish steadily morphed into a whole-house project. Russell started with the living room, setting a clear design scheme and color palette from which to build. Conjuring the couple’s bicoastal roots, she went for a vibe she describes as “unfussy

elegance” and a neutral palette that incorporates green, black, camel, and distressed leather. “They are a young couple living in a traditional, mature house,” says Russell. “I wanted the interior to feel current, fresh, light, and airy. But they are also old souls, so they like a bit of patina.” Designed to do double duty, the sizable living room has both a sitting area, grounded by a substantial distressed oak coffee table, and a game a ea. “We love a good game night,” says Pegi. Heated battles of Scattergories and backgammon play out on the round oak table with a black base surrounded by sculptural iron-framed chairs. “All the woods throughout the house are consistently light oak,” notes Russell. “The contrast with black makes me think of California.”

The sunny West Coast sensibility continues in the kitchen, which Russell left largely as is, save for new lighting, furniture, and brass fixtu es. She added a banquette to create a cozy spot for casual meals, and even a doggie dining nook (surrounded by plentiful pantry storage) for goldendoodle Harry. Personalized touches like this, from the gallery wall in the dining room, complete with a framed wedding-day speech, to an office that incorp ates stealth storage for daughter Effie’s oys, made working with Russell a must. “The biggest gift we gave ourselves was having Phoebe take the reins,” says Pegi. “She helped pull my style out of me and articulate it—and she turned an already great house into our forever home.”

he clients wanted a new house that was low-maintenance, built to net-zero energy standards, and designed to accommodate two generations who could each live both separately and together. It was a tall order, but the owners got exactly what they wanted by working with

Among the contributions by local artisans is the dining table crafted by Ian Ingersoll using a walnut slab procured at Berkshire Products in Sheffield, Massachusetts. Platt also imagined the gold-flecked dark blue venetian plaster ceiling—designed to mimic the night sky—in the family room.

a team of collaborative professionals and local craftsmen and vendors. Nestled in the hills of bucolic Litchfield Count , the handsome house is proof positive that in the right hands, green technology and beautiful, personal design can make happy symbiotic companions. The younger of the generations, a married couple who had been living in Manhattan and weekending on Long Island, were ready for a change. The wife had grown up in this picturesque corner of rural Connecticut and liked the low-key atmosphere, natural beauty, and outdoor opportunities. Meanwhile, her empty-nest parents were looking to transition to the next stage of their lives. Together, they purchased ten acres of woodland and hatched a plan to build a primary residence for both their futures. Architect Julia Metcalf designed a 6,500-square-foot structure as two separate residences connected by a central highceilinged corridor that runs from the front

door to the rear terrace. To the right is the one-story “in-law” unit, to the left is the larger two-story space occupied by the younger couple. Straight ahead is the view to the rolling hills. To meet net-zero status, the project was designed to use energy at levels equal to or less than the

amount of renewable energy created on-site. “As an architect, it is my duty to help the environment,” says Metcalf, who opted for a geothermal heating and cooling system, which eliminates the need for fossil fuels save for a back-up generator. Solar panels on the southeast-facing roof provide electricity. The

house also has an envelope that exceeds building code requirements by 25 percent and low-emissivity triple-pane Marvin windows. Sensitivity to the environment was also important in the interior design of the house. “We used eco-friendly and sustainable materials,” says designer Kathryn Hunt. The younger couple wanted space and amenities that would facilitate entertaining and overnight guests. “I’m from a large family,” says the husband, “so I wanted an open floor plan for th

kitchen and dining area.” The adjacent family room has double pocket doors that, when open, connect the two spaces. Upstairs, well-appointed bedrooms and baths await visitors. “We wanted a modern farmhouse feel,” says the wife, which they achieved with a muted palette and natural materials such as the white-oak floors Vermont Danby marble countertops, and the custom walnut dining table. RIGHT: The ample outdoor dining table beneath the covered section of the rear terrace is a favorite spot for the family to gather. FACING PAGE: A custom partners desk made by Litchfield Hills Kitchen & Bath sits by a window in the home office.

Consulting was brought on early in the process and worked with the team to create lawn and meadow and thoughtfully placed plantings to enhance the property from every angle. A favorite spot for both couples is the rear terrace, which is directly accessible from each of their units and where they often meet at the end of the day to enjoy the view and the quiet. Both indoors and out, every aspect of the home meets the needs of two generations thanks to the stellar designers. “The design team was willing to take feedback and be collaborative,” says the husband of the younger couple. The result is two sets of satisfied home wners. EDITOR’S NOTE: For details, see Resources.
