A message from Ms. Sabs

The month of May marks the beginning of summer and a time of testing for our school community, but also the realization that our school year is coming to an end and seniors will be graduating, moving on to their new endeavors soon. Thank you to all of our New Mission Titans for creating the content that makes up our newsletter every month. Check out this month's edition of the Titan Times and see how our students and staff have kept busy through multiple events, honoring our school culture and celebrating our students' successes.

Students in our GSA club planned and participated in the Day of Silence. Club members as well as students who signed up to support wore lanyards with the following prompt:

"Today is the Day of Silence a national student-led movement highlighting the silencing and erasure of LGBTQ+ people. 82% of LGBTQ+ students have experienced first-hand harassment or bullying in their school. 71% of students reported that their classrooms did not include any LGBTQ+ topics. More than 30% of LGBTQ+ students reported missing school because they felt unsafe or uncomfortable. Over half of all LGBTQ+ students of color experienced in-person victimization based on race/ethnicity. I am participating by abstaining from speaking on the #DayofSilence. Please respect my choice today to honor the Day of Silence in the hope that soon we will all have a voice that is heard. "

Staff and other students of the school community supported by wearing swag in support of the LGBTQ+ community and by respecting those who chose to silence their voices.

Biotechnology Highlight

New Mission and Eli Lilly have partnered to offer mentoring support to our Biotech 1 students. As part of the mentoring program, the students visited the Eli Lilly campus in Cambridge for a day of activites and a competitive rebranding for the mentoring program; now called Lilly's New Mission Mentoring Program.

a continuation...

Mael took a look at the distance, the sun was beginning to drift into the night as a meek wind sieved the sands off into the distance and unto other hills and the cavern while scorpions wandered around small holes in the cliff sides, seeking shelter from the wind and the radiant burning sun. The shadow watched in the distance from the caves, eyeing him closely as he became compelled again to voyage eastwards and into the night. The blanket of night splattered with dots of shades of white and purple lovingly smothered the sky, like a mother hugging her child. Mael walked eastward, with the Shadow trailing him. He was too invested in his lifelong mission to reach the east to notice the presence of the Shadow. He passed arches of clay and spire-mountains of terracotta By the time of around 3 AM, Mael had reached a reg (a desert pavement of rocks) Despite knowing that these parts were dangerous at day and that he did not know how large it was, he still walked across it, heading eastward once more. His feet felt unaffected by the innumerous red stones on the floor; he did not feel blood drip down his feet; he did not feel his ability to put pressure on his feet go away. He paid little attention to the surrounding masses of stone. He kept walking, determined to get over this reg by sunrise. He pushed onward and onward, treading along the pebbles at a steady pace despite his hastiness to get back to a flat desert. His clothes gained no tatters and his body felt no fatigue. He remembered reading books about people like him, and about the anatomy behind them, but he quickly got back to his mission The Shadow was intrigued by how this man could walk endlessly without stopping, sweating, or feeling any sense of tiredness and desire for rest. Mael wandered like a puppet being controlled by strings. Eventually he started stumbling. And not much later, he collapsed. The last thing he remembered seeing before it all turned to black was a dark shadow looming over him. He wasn't dead, at least not yet. He dreamed about an otherworldly force sucking the life out of innocent children in a grotto. A strange dream, but tame, and contained within the soles of his mind. Before he knew it, he felt himself waking up, but he was still surrounded by the darkness of night. He was alive, and felt nourished, but how? Mael got up and eyed his surroundings, dazed and confused before moving onwards towards the east amongst the dotted stars in the midnight sky… Little was he aware... the dark shadow had implanted in him what it needed for its genius plan. He headed eastward for another quarter-day, till it almost was time for the sun to rise. He then stopped before a camp, and decided to hide in the darkness and scout the situation.
