Hello Everyone!

Please enjoy the second issue of the New Mission Titan Chronicle for the 22 23 School Year! This month, we continued our whole school momentum of high rigor, high support through engaging curriculum and positive school culture.

I'm happy to read the feature on the 3Point Foundation. They teach a Student Leadership course to our Middle School and 9th Grade Students, as well as hold an after-school and weekend Basketball league. SUPPORT SUPPORT SUPPORT

Two of our students are seeking support from the New Mission community. On October 26, the family lost their home and belongings to a house fire in Hyde Park. As a school community, we have set up a GoFundMe page and are accepting food and clothing donations/toiletries on behalf of the family.

National Hispanic Heritage Month 2022!

"This is a traditional bread called "Pan de Muerto", specifically baked during the month of October/early November for folks to eat, but also as an offering to loved ones who have passed when celebrating Dia de Muertos. The physical aspect of the bread itself has many meanings and varies depending on who you ask. The center may represent the heart or the skull of the person who has passed while the surroundings may represent bones of those who passed or tears of those who remember our loved ones who have passed. Dia de Muertos is a traditional Mexican holiday where we remember our loved ones who have passed by putting together an ofrenda, which is a physical altar where we put pictures of our loved ones, items that represent them, orange marigolds and goodies that we offer to their spirits, such as the Pan de Muerto." NEW MISSION

Thank you to all the families who attended the New Mission Open House and supported from afar. We were happy to welcome over 100 students and families into the building after three years!

"On Friday, October 14th, Juniors and Seniors attended New Mission’s annual Fall College Fair. There, students engaged with representatives from over 25 colleges and other post secondary programs, asking questions and learning about the different opportunities the institutions offer. At the end of the fair, several representatives commented on how impressed they were by how engaged New Mission students were throughout the day. The college fair was one of many events this October that helped mark the district's college and career month."

TENNIS SUPERSTAR

ERICA GALLOWAY, 8TH GRADE

Galloway, 2nd from right, with her Tennis Team!

I like playing tennis because it is competitive. I enjoy winning trophies and playing against other students from different states. I started playing tennis when I was younger with my cousins. Now we play together on the same team! My favorite tennis player is Serena Williams. If I could spend a day with her, I would rally with her and talk. I would ask her what I should do to be confident when I play in tournaments. What advice would I give young girls who would like to learn to play tennis? I would tell them that you got the power. We've got girl power. Never let anyone bully you for the color of your skin. You are strong and you are very special.

EARLY COLLEGE AND CAREER PATHWAYS

PIC Student Feature: Lucy Jura

Lucy Jura is a 12th Grade student at New Mission. PIC Career Counselor, Mikayla Konopka, sat down with Lucy to hear about her Summer Internship experience.

“Lucy Jura is a Senior at New Mission who completed a paid internship over the summer of 2022. Lucy applied for this opportunity through Mikayla Konopka, the Boston PIC Career Specialist. Before starting the job, Lucy had to complete the Boston PIC internship application, review and upload her resume, and interview with internship organizations.

Lucy interned for the theatre organization Company One for the summer. At Company One, Lucy facilitated a summer program for elementary students where she worked with them on various theatre workshops. Some of the workshops were about confidence, building your own history, artistic minds, and Lucy’s favorite, lip singing. Lucy also assisted with other projects such as murals, social media, and helping to coordinate events for Company One.

Lucy was grateful for all of the college preparation her internship assisted with. On Fridays during the summer, Lucy went on college tours with her cohort to Boston University, Bunker Hill Community College, and Berklee College of Art and Music. Lucy’s internship also assisted her with reviewing her college essays.

Overall Lucy’s favorite part of the internship was working with the students. Lucy stated she learned a vast amount about leadership, patience, and how to ask for help when working with coworkers and adults. For Lucy’s future goals she is planning on attending college and studying law. This upcoming summer Lucy is planning on participating in a law internship with Boston PIC.

Lucy’s advice to others is to not be afraid to participate in new activities because it helps you develop new skills and build connections within your network of professionals. It is also important to develop career readiness skills that are learned outside of the school environment.

Thank you, Lucy, for sharing about your experience this summer!”

EARLY COLLEGE AND CAREER PATHWAYS

PIC Career Specialist Mikayla Konopka and Boston PIC STEM Employer Engagement Manager Mike connected with Biotech Instructor Sarah Goldberg to bring students to BioBuilder. At BioBuilder the students completed a hands on lab. The students discussed their results with the facilitator. Students also were able to tour Ginkgo Bioworks, which is a company in Boston where they focus on strain improvement, enzyme discovery, and new product development.

Early College Scholar Spotlight

Cristiane Ramos Timas Dos Santos | 10th grade Computer Science Pathway with Wentworth

"The reason I'm doing Early College is simply for the knowledge. I was never really into technology or coding but after my first day in this class, when my Professor, Dr. Felker, from Wentworth Institute of Technology, did a little speech about how technology was important then I really got it. Technology will be a huge part of our future and because I took this class I will be able to keep up with it and get both high school and college credits while doing it. It's honestly a huge honor and very interesting class. I hope everyone who has the opportunity to engage in Early College, will."

THE 3POINT FOUNDATION: STUDENT LEADERSHIP

This month in 3Point, New Mission 7th and 8th grade students began to work on the MyCAP (My Career & Academic Plan) strategy that Boston Public Schools uses across all schools to support students with planning for their futures. MyCAP is a whole school, student-directed, multi-year future planning process that begins in middle school. 3Point’s class provides the opportunities for middle school students to discover their individual interests, talents and skills, identify careers or post-secondary options, and then come to understand how their coursework aligns with their career choices.

3Point students took time in class to review their grades and progress reports, and then set academic SMART goals, setting themselves up with a clear picture of success for Quarter 1. Next, in the 3Point class, middle school students created self-awareness roadmaps, reflecting on important events, places, people, and experiences in their lives. 3Point students also engaged in multiple activities to better understand their learning styles, personality strengths, and potential career interests!

3Point also started its after-school basketball program this month! Students who signed up for 3Point’s after-school program meet with a basketball coach every Wednesday and Friday for 2 hours after school. They focus on developing skills and building the fundamentals of a successful basketball team. On Sunday, October 16th, 3Point launched its Sunday basketball league. Hosted at Emmanuel College, 3Point New Mission students have an opportunity to visit a college campus, work with players from the Emmanuel College basketball teams, compete in basketball games against students from other 3Point middle schools, and participate in a social-emotional class. The games are every Sunday from 9am-12pm.

ABA News!

Our ABA program took a walk to the Hyde Park Branch of the Boston Public Library on October 19th. Each student was signed up for a Boston Public Library Card using their student ID number. Each student was able to rent a library book with their new card. Our students did great asking the librarian for help, staying with the group, and finding a book based on their interest! We love taking walks in the community because it helps practice safety skills and the destination is always worth the journey! Prepared by Kayla Higgins, ABA-

Candy Bag Sales! Our ABA students also recently completed a Candy Bag Sale! With New Mission Staff placing orders, they were able to sell over 125 bags! Students were able to practice fulfilling orders and making deliveries around the building.

Lady Titans: Citywide Volleyball Champions!

Our Lady Titans volleyball team made history for New Mission High School today, as they beat the O’Bryant Tigers in a tough match for the city title. Ever since the intense game and defeat they took last year at Charlestown in the 2021 Semifinals, these ladies have been motivated and dedicated more than ever to get one more shot to bring home the gold. From off season practices/workouts, the Summer Volleyball Skills and Development camp, and pre season practices/scrimmages and even camps, these girls took every opportunity they could get or make for themselves to practice their craft and further develop their skills and techniques for the season Once the season hit, it was “go time” for these ladies as they showed how amazing and strong they are at this sport. This was clear through their numerous service aces, strong and active defense, and athletic and versatile offensive line up. These ladies weren’t letting anything stop them from winning cities. After finishing with a 17 3 season record, being the #1 team in the Northern Conference, and beating Snowden in the Semi finals, 3 0, the team went home, rested, and regrouped to take O’Bryant for the city title. Although O’B is a tough and athletic team, they were no match for our Lady Titans as they beat the Tigers 3 0, and brought home the trophy for Girls Volleyball City Champions of 2022. Let’s also celebrate our Most Valuable Player for the Boston City League Girls Volleyball City Championship of 2022, Courtney Sarfo, with 12 aces, 10 kills, and 2 blocks over the O’Bryant Tigers Please congratulate our new Volleyball City Champions and MVP for an amazing season and a great game against O’Bryant in the finals! Also, be aware of game announcements as our Ladies’ are also ranked #26 in Division 3 for the State Tournament, and we’ll be starting games next week! Thank you to Coach Modesto, Coach Santos Hicks, Coach Bernard, Athletic Director Malcolm Smith, and the entire New Mission community for their support.
