Much has changed over the past 40 years. In the
of Rainkote, the first acrylic waterproofer for the retail trade. It was an immediate success due to its ease-of-use and long life, Rainkote and later with other competing products created a large new retail category. At the same time Duram made the important strategic decision to dedicate themselves only to retail, and cease all supply directly to the trade, a commitment which remains today.
Durabak and Herculiner Duram’s most significant technical – as opposed to marketing breakthrough was the development, in 1983, of Durabak. This single pack Bakkie liner was developed to compete with the then established two component Bakkie liners. Durabak proved very successful and was later taken over by a US distributor. It is still the most popular DIY Bakkie liner in the US and is still made in Cape Town.
Expansion into metal care In 1997 Duram bought Aldrin, a company which specialised in anti-rust coatings, including the iconic NS4 Anti-Rust Primer. Duram have subsequently added to this range and the metal-care category remains a key part of Duram’s specialist product range. Because of the growth and brand recognition of Duram’s waterproofing and specialty products, Duram launched a comprehensive collection of decorative and tinting paints in 2016.
