water crisis creates retail opportunities

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent address highlighting investment in critical water infrastructure signals significant opportunities for hardware retailers across South Africa. As the country grapples with ageing water systems, intermittent supply, and increasing water restrictions, consumer demand for water management solutions has never been higher.

Forward-thinking retailers are already expanding their plumbing sections to include comprehensive ranges of water-saving devices, storage solutions, and DIY repair components.

Smart merchandising strategies include creating dedicated water conservation zones featuring rainwater harvesting systems, water-efficient taps,

low-flow shower heads, toilet cistern adjusters, and leak detection equipment. These high-margin categories attract both homeowners and contractors responding to municipal water restrictions.

why the buying group model may make sense

When considering becoming a business owner and neither the idea of branching out on your own or joining an established franchise operation appeals to you, there is another option that may give you the best of both worlds.

South Africa has seen an increase in the emergence of buying groups — also called group purchasing organisations (GPOs) — over the past decade. Being part of a buying group gives businesses the support of being part of a larger organisation while still enjoying the autonomy of being your own boss.

As the name suggests, a buying group is a collective association of businesses that join forces to improve buying power, drive efficiencies and share collective knowledge, all leading to better pricing and an improved retail experience. It differs from the franchise model by being less prescriptive in terms of operational requirements, corporate identity, and marketing obligations, while providing a level of support according to the unique needs of each retailer in the group.

Buying groups exist in many retail sectors in South Africa, particularly fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and hardware. Noteworthy buying group brands in these sectors include SPAR and Shield in FMCG, and Powerbuild, Build it and Mica Hardware in hardware.

“Independent retailers operate in a competitive, complex environment,

constantly facing the threat of losing out to large retail chains with their huge marketing budgets, and a customer base that is increasingly savvy and cost-conscious,” says Nedbank Commercial Banking national retail services manager Karen Keylock. She adds that, to thrive in this environment,

these independents need more than just an innovative idea and strong business acumen; they need a strategic edge. This is where the power of a value-adding buying group with or without retail brand options, optional central accounts and multiple other support services becomes attractive.

RETAIL MATTERS

“This collaborative approach is about much more than simply pooling volumes to secure substantial discounts from suppliers. By obtaining better credit terms, streamlining the supply chain, reducing wastage, improving inventory turnover, and adopting joint accounting systems and marketing initiatives, the buying group can improve pricing and efficiencies and offer a broader range of products.”

An interesting spinoff is that the savings generated in the network by centralised

purchasing increases the profits of each individual network company because they receive a portion of the rebates from each purchase. And on the other side of the transaction, group purchasing affords suppliers easy access to a larger pool of buyers, which streamlines their operations and, in turn, allows them to offer lower prices. According to Powerbuild MD and founder Armand Feldtmann – a buying group in the hardware, building materials, DIY, and paint sectors with more than 700 stores in their

BUYING GROUP MODEL

network – the support they provide their retail partners is flexible and can be determined by the retailer on a pay-as-you-use basis.

“Our entire business model is centred around providing our partners with the specific assistance they need. So, members can select anything from a simple purchasing power arrangement, which they apply to their own branded store where they take care of their own administrative, marketing and support needs, to a fully branded Powerbuild store and the supplier deals associated with it, strengthened by operational, human resources and admin support, marketing and cutting-edge software solutions.”

International FMCG retailer, SPAR, is a voluntary trading organisation that provides store owners with access to bulk-buying benefits but differs from a franchised business in that retailers are not dictated to by a corporate structure. This means they have the freedom and flexibility to choose their own product range and provide input into the pricing and strategy of growing their businesses within the community they serve.

As with Powerbuild, SPAR couples the freedom and independence provided by the buying group model with consultation and assistance in all areas of retail operations, such as merchandising, promotion and advertising programmes, finance controls,

staff employment support, new store development, as well as revamps of and upgrades to existing stores. Their distribution network is extensive, with six distribution centres around the country and an extensive fleet of trucks delivering frequently to 2 500 stores nationally.

While certain operations, such as

restaurants and fast-food outlets, lend themselves to a stricter operating model to ensure consistency of quality and a standardised customer experience, the efficiency-driven savings provided by the buying group model are attractive in other sectors. This is particularly important in an environment where every rand and every improvement can transform a business from one that is just surviving to one that is actively thriving. This business model allows independent retailers to benefit from the economies of scale typically reserved for larger counterparts, while enjoying the autonomy of being their own boss.

CEMENT AND CONCRETE

top eco trends and tips for cement and concrete retail

From towering skyscrapers to highways and everyday building structures, cement and concrete materials are indispensable to development. These materials form the backbone of modern construction, shaping urban landscapes and supporting critical infrastructure.

The African cement industry stands at the threshold of unprecedented growth, offering savvy retailers significant opportunities to expand their building materials business. As rapid urbanisation transforms the continent’s landscape, cement demand across subSaharan Africa is reaching record highs, with infrastructure spending projected to increase by more than 10% annually by 2025. This construction boom mirrors similar trends in Southeast Asia and parts of South America, positioning Africa as a critical global market for cement producers and retailers alike.

For hardware stores and building supply merchants, this surge presents a compelling opportunity to diversify product offerings, strengthen cement-related inventory, and develop strategic relationships with manufacturers who can guarantee consistent supply during this period of explosive growth in the construction sector.

Understanding industry developments and challenges equips professionals, retailers and end users to navigate the sector successfully.

Environmental impacts and concerns

Cement manufacturing stands as one of construction’s most significant environmental challenges, contributing approximately 8% of global carbon emissions despite concrete being the world’s second most consumed substance after water.

The environmental impact is twofold:

The chemical transformation of calcium carbonate into lime inherently releases CO2 as a byproduct, while energy-intensive kilns requiring temperatures above 1,400°C consume substantial fossil fuels. Each tonne of cement produces roughly 900kg of CO2 — accounting for 88% of emissions in typical concrete mixtures.

Standard structural concrete (14% cement) generates approximately 410kg/m³ of CO2 However, replacing 30% of cement with alternatives like fly ash significantly reduces emissions to about 290kg/m³, demonstrating viable paths toward sustainability.

Beyond carbon emissions, the industry drives

resource depletion as sand and gravel become increasingly scarce. In South Africa, where water scarcity remains critical, concrete’s waterintensive production and curing processes present additional challenges.

Without intervention, these environmental burdens risk outweighing cement’s infrastructural benefits, making innovation in sustainable production methods essential for the industry’s future.

Emerging trends and industry challenges

Digital innovation is rapidly transforming the cement industry from a manufacturing necessity into a competitive advantage. Industry experts predicted that by 2025, cement production will be fundamentally transformed by artificial intelligence, machine learning, and IoT technologies, resulting in smarter plants with optimised efficiency and significantly reduced waste. Forward-thinking manufacturers are already implementing predictive maintenance systems that dramatically decrease plant downtime, while smart sensors provide real-time

performance data that enables more sustainable and cost-effective operations. These advancements are becoming increasingly vital for operators of Rotary Kiln Cement Plants, the critical infrastructure at the heart of cement manufacturing.

Alongside technological transformation, the cement industry is embracing resource innovation through alternative materials. Traditional cement manufacturing relies heavily on limestone and clay, but growing resource scarcity and environmental regulations are driving significant changes in production inputs. According to the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA), by the end of 2025, sustainable alternatives such as fly ash, slag, recycled plastics, and innovative materials like geopolymer cement will constitute at least 30% of global cement production. These alternatives not only address waste management challenges but also promise remarkable environmental benefits, with the GCCA reporting potential carbon emission reductions of up to 90%. For manufacturers, these alternatives offer the added advantages of reduced production costs and lower energy consumption, creating a triple win for business, consumers, and the environment.

Despite the cement industry’s promising growth, manufacturers and retailers face significant challenges that will shape the sector’s future. Raw material scarcity represents a pressing concern as the increasing demand for cement drives up requirements for limestone, clay, and gypsum — resources with finite availability and substantial environmental extraction impacts.

The energy-intensive nature of cement production presents yet another hurdle as manufacturers contend with volatile energy

costs. Traditional cement plants rely heavily on fossil fuels — coal, oil, and natural gas — all subject to unpredictable price fluctuations that directly impact product costs and retailer margins. Although renewable alternatives like solar and wind power offer promising longterm solutions, they require substantial upfront investment that many manufacturers are still working to secure.

Retailers who partner with manufacturers embracing sustainable materials and energyefficient processes will be better positioned to weather these industry-wide challenges while meeting growing consumer demand for environmentally responsible building materials.

In South Africa, eco-conscious developers and architects increasingly choose recycled concrete or green concrete, which incorporates industrial by-products and reduces the reliance on traditional cement.

These advancements underscore that a sustainable future for industry is possible, but achieving it requires ongoing collaboration between policymakers, manufacturers, and retailers.

However, South Africa’s industry faces challenges in terms of regulations and policies. The Board of Cement & Concrete SA (CCSA), the industry body that had been promoting quality and environmentally friendly cement and concrete products has officially ceased operations. In line with its Memorandum of Incorporation, the CCSA deregistered from the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission in 2024.

A report submitted to DIY & Industrial Trade News in May 2024 revealed that after a final attempt in 2021 to consolidate the various industry bodies, namely The Concrete Institute (TCI), the Concrete Society of Southern Africa,

and the Association of Cementitious Material Producers (ACMP) into one entity known as CCSA, the initiative failed to achieve its desired objectives. It was initially anticipated that running CCSA would result in cost savings, but a continued lack of investment in infrastructure placed further strain on the already challenged industry. As a result, the decision was made to wind down the organisation, effective from 1 April 2024.

Despite these setbacks, the industry continues to strive towards aligning with international carbon emission standards and sustainable practices, ensuring that its products are more environmentally friendly.

Benefits of stocking cement and concrete products for hardware retailers

For hardware retailers, offering a diverse range of cement and concrete products presents both competitive and financial benefits. With construction and DIY markets thriving, positioning your business as a reliable supplier can ensure a steady footfall and encourage repeat customs.

By stocking eco-friendly alternatives, premixed concrete, and specialty items like waterproof or fast-setting cement, retailers can cater to a range of customer needs while capitalising on emerging trends. Furthermore, promoting cement and concrete sales alongside complementary products such as adhesives, sealants, tools, and safety gear can result in higher sales and improved profit margins.

Equipping staff with knowledge about the products and their application can foster confidence in your sales force while building trust and loyalty among customers.

WHY A MAINTENANCE AISLE MATTERS

Customers appreciate a store that helps them maintain their investment rather than

retailers — become the perfect paint finish experts!

Advising customers on the correct preparation products is just as crucial as recommending the right topcoat. A flawless, long-lasting paint finish depends on proper surface preparation, making primers and undercoats indispensable.

Medal Paints understands the important role that these products play in ensuring customers build trust with retailers’ paint advice. Educating customers on primers and undercoats builds trust and reduces complaints from failed paint jobs.

By positioning primers and undercoats as essential steps, not optional extras, retailers can drive sales while ensuring customer satisfaction.

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PRIMERS AND UNDERCOATS

PRIMERS: The essential first layer

A primer is the foundational coat applied to bare surfaces such as new plaster, bare wood, or metal. Its primary functions are:

• Sealing porous surfaces to prevent uneven topcoat absorption

• Promoting adhesion for durable topcoat bonding

• Blocking stains such as water marks, tannin bleed from wood

• Providing corrosion resistance (for metal primers).

UNDERCOATS: The bridge to perfection

An undercoat is applied over primed or previously painted surfaces to ensure the best possible result for the topcoat. An undercoat is primarily used when transitioning from solvent-based to water-based coatings.

Key benefits include:

• Improved opacity, especially when transitioning between dark and light colours

• Creation of a uniform base for the topcoat, ensuring true colour representation

• Enhanced durability through the addition of an extra protective layer.

WATER-BASED VS SOLVENT-BASED PRIMERS:

Water-based primers are best for plaster, drywall, and masonry. A water-based primer is recommended for indoor use, has a low odour (VOC), dries quickly and is eco-conscious. Recommend water-based primers for residential interiors and projects requiring fast recoating.

Water-based primer solutions from Medal Paints are:

• Medal Professional Water Based Plaster Primer: Ideal for new plaster, offering excellent sealing and adhesion

• Medal Professional First Coat Plaster Primer: A cost-effective primer with reliable alkali resistance and hiding power. Not recommended for gypsum.

USE THIS KNOWLEDGE TO:

• Offer bundled solutions  (primer + undercoat + topcoat)

• Display application guides near products

• Train staff to understand customer needs better.

Solvent Based Primers perform excellently in harsh environments and are suitable for exterior use and in high-moisture areas. A solvent-based primer should be used on surfaces requiring superior stain blocking. Solvent based primers are tougher but require proper ventilation. Ideal for exterior or industrial applications. Solvent based primer solutions from Medal Paints are:

• Medal Professional Trade Plaster Primer: A solvent-based alkali-resistant option for tough plaster

• QD Industrial Primer: A quick-drying, anti-corrosive solution for steel

• Pink Wood Primer: A solvent-based primer for all wood surfaces.

WHY MEDAL PAINTS?

Medal Paints’ primers and undercoats are trusted by professionals for their:

• Superior adhesion and sealing properties

• Tailored formulations (water-based for ecofriendliness, solvent-based for toughness)

• Time-saving efficiencies.

TOP PICKS FOR RETAILERS TO STOCK

• Medal Professional Water-Based Plaster Primer (interiors)

• Medal Professional First Coat  (exterior/alkali resistance)

• QD Industrial Primer (metal protection)

• Universal Undercoat (versatile, compatible with most topcoats)

multipurpose repair solutions drive sales in a cost-conscious market

In a challenging economic climate, consumers are increasingly looking for cost-effective repair solutions rather than replacing damaged items. This presents a valuable opportunity for hardware retailers to stock and promote versatile, high-performance repair products that cater to both DIY users and professionals.

“We understand the diverse repair challenges that people face. Whether it’s a household fix or an emergency vehicle repair, we provide reliable adhesive solutions that help customers take control of their repairs and avoid costly replacements,” says Pratley national sales and marketing manager Mark Bell.

A MUST-HAVE SOLUTION FOR HARDWARE RETAILERS

One such solution is Pratley Quickset® Putty, an exceptionally high-strength, hand-mouldable adhesive putty that bonds to metal, cement, stone, glass, slate, wood, and most rigid materials. Its fast-setting properties — hardening in about 15 minutes at 23°C — make it an ideal product for urgent repairs.

From sealing a cracked radiator to fixing a leaking water pipe or mending a broken tool handle, Pratley Quickset Putty provides a simple, cost-effective alternative to expensive replacements or professional repair services. It is also resistant to petrol and many other chemicals, ensuring durability and reliability in demanding applications.

MEETING THE DEMAND FOR SUSTAINABLE AND BUDGET-FRIENDLY SOLUTIONS

Consumers are shifting away from a throwaway culture in favour of resourceful, long-lasting repairs. For hardware retailers, this trend represents a key opportunity to offer products that align with this mindset.

“Well-formulated, reliable DIY adhesive solutions not only instil confidence and self-reliance but also help consumers save money and extend the life of their belongings,” Bell adds. “Pratley Quickset Putty is just one example of our extensive high-performance adhesive range that meets this growing demand.”

Stocking products like Pratley Quickset Putty allows hardware retailers to cater to a broad customer base, from DIY enthusiasts

to professionals who need quick, strong, and dependable repairs.

Boasting NEW blister packaging, with an improved product, Superflex Evolution Diamond Blades feature both excellent longevity and cutting abilities.

Available in two derivatives – The Segmented, and Continuous Rim, these blades fit directly onto a normal angle grinder.

Segmented Rim, which is used within the construction industry to cut brick, concrete and stone, will

provide the fastest cut. This blade is used for dry cutting, as the Segmented Rim allows for both air to flow through and cool down the blade during application, and debris to exit faster during the cut.

Continuous Rim is favoured for tile cutting as it provides a slower, but much neater cut that reduces chipping to almost zero.

Suitable for wet cutting applications on hard materials, such as glass, porcelain, ceramics, marble, and granite.

Apart from NEW blister packaging, Superflex Evolution Diamond blades now feature improved durability and longevity due to the enhanced design achieving multiple cuts for longer.

saint-gobain africa reaffirms its commitment to africa

Saint-Gobain Africa announced its renewed commitment to the African continent through a new unifying programme called: ‘Make it in Africa to Build Africa’.

This regional commitment is an extension of the group’s purpose – Making the World a Better Home (MABA) – and underscores its dedication to empowering the continent by prioritising local production, nurturing local talent, and encouraging economic growth within the industry.

“MABA is our drive and the lens through which we view everything we do. It’s about partnering with all construction market stakeholders to build a sustainable Africa from within, where local solutions meet local needs, reinforcing our belief in the potential of African markets and communities,” says CEO Othman Benjelloun-Touimi.

MABA translates into actionable and impactful goals tailored to Africa, addressing

its unique realities and opportunities. It is based on four main pillars, each linked to specific examples of how Saint-Gobain aims at bringing all partners and stakeholders along in building Africa.

1

SUSTAINABILITY

Inviting the entire ecosystem to transform industry: sustainability is no longer an option. The Group is committed to innovation with products and solutions that maximise its contribution to people’s health and well-being, while minimising its impact on the planet.

In line with this commitment, SaintGobain Africa is excited to introduce The FutuRE range; a new selection of sustainable

construction solutions designed to enhance efficiency and minimise environmental impact, while maintaining the same cost. This range currently includes RhinoBoard® 9mm, RhinoBoard 12.5mm, RhinoBoard FireStop (12.5 and 15mm), Isover Cavitylite, and Weber WB11, each with a third-party verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and a positive contribution to at least one strategic sustainability criteria such as a minimum of 10% reduction in CO 2

As building regulations increasingly mandate lower-carbon materials, retailers stocking The FutuRE range help customers stay ahead of compliance requirements. Each product’s third-party verified Environmental Product Declaration provides the

documentation professionals need for green building certifications, creating additional value beyond the product itself. By introducing these products to their inventory, retailers can attract both environmentally conscious DIY customers and professional contractors looking to meet increasingly stringent green building requirements.

2

LOCAL PRODUCTION

From Africa, For Africa: producing locally and creating opportunities within communities. By investing in local manufacturing and expanding production lines, Saint-Gobain Africa aims at reducing dependency on imports, creating jobs, and driving economic growth.

In line with this commitment, the opening of our new South African fiber cement

plant in the third quarter of 2025 marks a major milestone. This facility will not only create more than 60 permanent jobs in its first phase and empower local communities but will also ensure access to high-quality, durable building solutions at the right cost.

3

OUR PEOPLE

Saint-Gobain Africa is dedicated to empowering local talents through initiatives like ourgraduate programme, which nurtures future African manufacturing leaders. SaintGobain Africa also supports community development projects, provides contractors and applicators training and offers education opportunities throughout the continent.

4

OUR CUSTOMERS

Saint-Gobain Africa is committed to understanding its customers across

the value chain and partnering with them to better meet their needs. The MABA commitment will enable us to offer meaningful innovations and locally produced materials that meet international standards, while also strengthening our support and technical knowledge to better serve our customers every step of the way.

Saint-Gobain Africa will collaborate with local businesses, governments, communities, and all construction industry stakeholders who share the same commitment to driving innovation and development. “The future of Africa lies in the hands of its people,” says Othman Benjelloun-Touimi.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

75 years of

trusted performance

This year, Q20 celebrates 75 years as South Africa’s leading multipurpose lubricant – an achievement made possible by the retailers and trade professionals who have supported the brand over the decades.

Originally developed in 1950 by local inventor William Robertson in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal, Q20 was designed to displace moisture and prevent Robertson’s daughter’s Beetle from breaking down in rainy weather. But Robertson had a bigger vision: A multipurpose solution that could clean components, lubricate, protect against corrosion, and provide “20 answers to 20 questions.”

Three-quarters of a century later, Q20 remains a household name and an essential product in workshops, hardware stores, and industrial settings across South Africa. Now exported to multiple countries, Q20 continues to set the benchmark in lubrication and corrosion protection.

EXPANDING THE Q-RANGE

To mark this milestone, Q20 has introduced a new range of specialist products tailored for trade professionals and DIY enthusiasts:

Q-ZINC SPRAY

Provides durable, long-lasting corrosion protection with a sacrificial zinc coating. Ideal for automotive, marine, and industrial applications.

Q-MAF SENSOR CLEANER

Safely restores mass airflow sensors for accurate air/fuel ratios, improving engine efficiency.

Q-WHITE LITHIUM GREASE

A high-performance lubricant that reduces friction and protects against rust and wear in automotive hinges, gears, and sliding mechanisms.

Q-CONTACT CLEANER

A fast-drying, plastic-safe electrical cleaner that removes dirt, oil, and contamination from electrical contacts without residue. Ideal for electrical, automotive, and industrial use.

Q-VALVE CLEANER

Designed to increase power and torque, Q-VALVE CLEANER effectively removes carbon build-up without requiring top-engine disassembly. The formula is also safe for turbos and intercoolers, enhances engine efficiency and stabilises a rough idle for a smoother ride.

Winter comfort, controlled your way

Effortless warmth at the touch of a button.

RHE15

WiFi Free-Standing Decorative Heater

When the cold hits, you want quick, reliable heat — without the hassle of firewood or fuel. The WiFi Free-Standing Decorative Heater delivers powerful warmth with two heat settings (900W and 1800W), perfect for areas up to 15m ²

Sleek in black powder-coated steel, it’s both stylish and practical. With WiFi control via the Tuya app, you can preset, schedule, and manage heat from anywhere — including an 8-hour timer. Add to that five ambient light settings, and you’ve got the mood and the heat, all in one. Just plug in, power up, and enjoy instant comfort.
