trade shows prove their worth in the digital age

In our fast-moving digital age, where time and cost savings dominate every business decision, you’d be forgiven for thinking trade shows might be heading for extinction. The Covid-19 pandemic had the B2B industry holding its breath, wondering if virtual meetings and digital platforms would permanently replace traditional gatherings.

But here’s what we’ve discovered: trade shows aren’t just surviving – they’re thriving.

The magic of trade shows lies in their B2B DNA. They’re purpose-built for forging connections between vendors and buyers.

When companies set up their stands, they’re not just displaying products, they’re creating opportunities for hands-on demonstrations, one-on-one conversations, and meaningful interactions that close deals.

This year's trade show season has proven that despite all our digital advances, nothing quite replaces the power of pressing flesh and shaking hands in the hardware retailing industry.

In this issue of DIY and Industrial Trade News, have a look at our Retailers Guide to Plasters, Paints, and Painting Equipment on page 19; read up on Skillcraft’s first Concept Store launch on page 80; see what went down at this year’s Essential Hardware Trade Show on page 82, and catch the highlights from Power Build’s PowerFest on page 90.

Happy DIYing!

AI-fuelled retail media opens new frontier in performance marketing for South African brands

Retail media has emerged as an advertising powerhouse internationally, becoming a major revenue generator for players like Amazon. Now, the trend is catching on in South Africa as leading online retailers such as Takealot, Checkers Sixty60, Makro, and Woolworths adopt retail media to boost revenues and shopper engagement.

IQ Business digital campaign manager, Alasdair Fey says marketers should pay close attention to how these platforms evolve because they offer exciting new performance marketing opportunities. Leading brands are already investigating retail media platforms for competitive advantage, leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to personalise ads and enhance targeting.

WHAT IS RETAIL MEDIA AND WHY IS IT TAKING OFF?

Retail media allows companies to use retailers’ properties — websites, apps, and in-store displays — to target actively shopping consumers. While offline formats like point-of-sale displays have existed for decades, online platforms make retail media far more targeted, measurable, and immediate.

South African brands are embracing online retail media to connect with shoppers precisely when they are ready to buy. Like programmatic platforms such as META or Google, retail media offers powerful audience segmentation and targeting tools, reaching customers in retailers’ digital spaces at the instant they are researching purchases.

BIG GROWTH, BIG OPPORTUNITY

eCommerce’s rapid rise has set the stage for retail media’s boom. World Wide Worx data shows South African online retail surged 29% to R71 billion in 2023. Online accounts for 6% of total retail spend, forecast to reach 10% by 2026. Beyond driving direct sales, leading retailers are monetising audiences by

allowing third parties to advertise on their platforms. Retail media platforms like Rainmaker Media (Massmart-owned) and Takealot Ads help brands target audiences effectively. These platforms are investing in AI features to improve ad placements, product suggestions, and pricing for better results.

WHY RETAIL MEDIA MATTERS

Retail media offers immediacy, connecting brands to high-intent shoppers already shopping or ready to buy, boosting conversion chances. Brands access retailers’ first-party data to create precise, relevant ads that resonate at high-impact conversion moments.

Retail media provides accountable, closedloop reporting, showing exactly how ads lead to sales — complete visibility from click to purchase. Sophisticated AI and machine learning tools enhance accuracy and measurability, helping brands test, learn, and optimise in fast-moving markets. Finally, retail media integrates seamlessly with other digital marketing channels, ensuring consistent messaging across platforms and creating stronger shopper connections.

AI-POWERED BEST PRACTICES

Enhanced customer engagement via AI, alongside expanding online delivery networks, drives growth of platforms like Sixty60 and Woolies Dash.

KEY STRATEGIES INCLUDE:

• Combine data sources: Use CRM lists and loyalty programmes alongside retailer shopper data for precise audience segments

• Automate with AI: Machine learning tests ad versions, identifies top performers, and allocates budgets effectively

• Personalise recommendations: AI suggests relevant products based on browsing/purchase history

• Deploy AI assistants: Chatbots enhance shopping experiences with instant support and product guidance

• Refine targeting: AI identifies optimal timing and ad placement for maximum results.

THE FUTURE

As more South Africans shop online, retail media will continue expanding. Brands embracing AI personalisation, integrating retail media into broader strategies, and collaborating closely with retailers will achieve superior results. Leaders will view retail media not just as advertising, but as smart partnerships where data, technology, and creativity converge to drive exceptional conversion performance.

Dulux reveals 2026 rhythm of blues

Dulux showcases a dynamic family of blues for the first time, offering more choice than ever before.

It is time to dance to the Rhythm of Blues™ and celebrate AkzoNobel’s Colours of the Year 2026 – an upbeat and versatile colour family that is calming, connecting, and creative.

There is a trio of shades for next year – the light blue Mellow Flow™, the dark blue Slow Swing™, and the vibrant Free Groove™ – so everyone can find a style that works for them. The harmonious collection of signature indigos is just what we need in our homes, according to the results of the company’s extensive annual trend research from AkzoNobel’s Global Aesthetic Centre.

“AkzoNobel’s Global Aesthetic Centre has been translating trends into desirable colours for more than 30 years. Its annual ColourFutures™ trend forecast meeting brings together in-house experts, international architects, designers, and journalists to share insights into how our

reactions to the world around us affect our colour choices,” says Dulux Colour Expert Palesa Ramaisa.

“With everything that is happening in the world, we see that people are reacting in various ways. They are either slowing down and recharging their batteries, wanting to feel in tune with others, and celebrate kinship. Or they are choosing to be bold, have fun, and feel carefree,” explains AkzoNobel’s Global Aesthetic Centre creative director Heleen van Gent.

She adds that the three colour palettes will help create living environments that fit everyone’s individual decorative needs. “To reflect these various moods – and because we understand that colour is emotion and therefore personal – we have chosen a family of colours for 2026. They are centred around three different rhythms that offer endless scope for changing the pace of your space.”

Slow Colour Story

A wholesome, human space that feels restorative. Somewhere we can reflect, refocus, and recharge our batteries. Simple and peaceful, it’s where we can find ourselves and get ready to face the world.

Flow colour story

A friendly and connected space that feels in tune with the world. Somewhere, we can come together and bond with the natural networks of life: our families, our communities, and the earth around us.

// AkzoNobel's Global Aesthetic Centre has been translating trends into desirable colours for more than 30 years //

FEATURE

Feel free colour story

A boundary-breaking space that feels upbeat and carefree. Somewhere, we can think outside the box, embrace our inner child, and find the freedom and energy to play, experiment, and dream.

The colours, textures, and special effects that take centre stage in the Rhythm of Blues collection have been designed to resonate

with a wide range of markets. Along with decorative paints, inspirational palettes have also been created for the aerospace, automotive, consumer electronics, metal furniture, lighting, cabinetry, flooring, building products, and architecture markets.

“We pride ourselves on setting the tone together with architects, interior designers, trend specialists, and product developers

– who all make important contributions to our in-depth research. Our Rhythm of Blues family is perfectly in tune with evolving trends in various industries and will help us deliver market-specific solutions to customers so they can more confidently apply their own style to their projects,” adds Dulux Paints, sub-Sahara Africa marketing director Nathalie Sweeney.

retailers guide to plasters, paint and painting equipment

For hardware retailers, the journey to a flawless finish does not begin with colour, it starts with preparation and the right tools. In this category, plasters and painting equipment form the backbone of every successful project, from small DIY touchups to major renovations. Together, they offer strong repeat sales, valuable add-ons, and the chance to position your store as the go-to destination for quality and expertise.

Plasters are the first and most critical step. Whether it is repairing cracks, smoothing uneven walls, or preparing fresh surfaces, a well-stocked plaster range supports both professional contractors and DIYers. Retailers should focus on carrying a mix of pre-mixed fillers, cementbased and gypsum plasters, skim coatings, bonding liquids, mesh and fibre tape, patching compounds, and primers, supported by sanding blocks and accessories to complete the preparation. These not only drive basket value but also encourage cross-selling with paints and coatings. Painting equipment is where the project comes to life. Every customer who buys plaster or paint will also need tools, and this is where smart merchandising can significantly grow sales. From brushes, rollers, trays, scrapers, knives, and masking tapes to professional-grade sprayers, mixers, and sanders, the right product mix caters to everyone from DIY beginners to trade professionals. Consumables such as drop sheets, gloves, and cleaning rags create reliable repeat purchases.

While paints remain the visible part of the finish, it is plasters and painting equipment that perfect the result. By presenting these sections as a connected category, and working with suppliers on education, merchandising, and promotional bundles, retailers can unlock greater value, stronger customer loyalty, and better margins.

ASHAK

When it comes to plaster preparation, retailers need to offer solutions that not only save contractors time on site but also ensure a professional, long-lasting finish. One of the most effective peparation products on the market is a reliable bonding agent – and that’s where Plasterkey comes in.

// A.Shak has been in the construction and DIY industry for almost 70 years and has cultivated its range to include industry respected products //

// Plasterkey is ideal for contractors working on smooth substrates and is trusted throughout the industry for its performance and ease of use. Plasterkey’s long-standing reputation also gives retailers a product their customers already know and trust –making it a fast mover in store //

Why should retailers stock Plasterkey?

Retailers who stock Plasterkey can offer their customers a triedand-tested solution that reduces labour time (no chipping or hacking required) and significantly improves the bond strength of both cement and gypsum plasters. It is ideal for contractors working on smooth substrates and is trusted throughout the industry for its performance and ease of use. Plasterkey’s longstanding reputation also gives retailers a product their customers already know and trust — making it a fast mover in store.

A.Shak has been in the construction and DIY industry for almost 70 years. Over the years the company has cultivated its range to include high quality products such as its industry respected Plasterkey.

Plasterkey is a universal, waterbased bonding aid that assists in preparing a surface for plaster by ‘keying’ the surface without needing to chip it. Plasterkey is designed to work with sand/cement and gypsum plaster. Plasterkey is perfect for preparing smooth surfaces to greatly reduce the chances of the plaster delaminating or failing.

Plasterkey improves the non-

structural bond of cement and gypsum plasters. Plasterkey is great for soffits and vertical surfaces. You simply need to coat the surfaces with a scratch coat consisting of two parts river sand, one-part cement and Plasterkey.

The scratch coat can be applied by either throwing it onto the surface with a trowel or a block brush. A tyraline machine can also be used to apply Plasterkey to the prepared surface. When the scratch coat is dry then you will be able to plaster in the usual manner.

For Gypsum based plaster you can apply the Plasterkey to the prepared surface and plaster straight onto the wet Plasterkey.

Plasterkey is available in 210L, 25L, 10L, and 5L containers with coverage of approximately 10m²/l.

BENEFITS

• Improves non-structural bond of cement and gypsum plasters

• No more hacking and chipping of smooth surfaces

• Bonds to sound PVA surfaces

• Easy to use

• The one and only Plasterkey.

Tools with a purpose – Matus honoured for supporting CANSA

On 5 August 2025, the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) officially recognised Matus for their contribution to cancer awareness and support, with a special certificate of appreciation handed over at the Matus head office. The gesture marked the success of an initiative that combined purpose and product in the sale of pink tools.

supported by several key suppliers, saw a percentage of every pink tool sold donated directly to CANSA. The result was a meaningful contribution towards cancer research, education, and support programmes – all made possible by something as symbolically simple as changing the colour of a tool.

The handover was done by Makoma Raolane from CANSA, who presented the certificate to Nonhlanhla Thwala, representing Matus. It was a moment to acknowledge the impact that businesses can have when they align their commercial power with a compassionate cause.

“We are deeply grateful for Matus’ initiative and the involvement of their suppliers. Every contribution helps CANSA

fund critical research. And every act of awareness brings us closer to a healthier, cancer-smart South Africa,” says Raolane.

Matus’ pink tools initiative is just one example of the company’s ongoing commitment to social responsibility. As a leader in the hardware distribution space, Matus has consistently used its reach to support causes that matter – and the fight against cancer is certainly one of them.

This initiative would not have been possible without the support of Matus’ supplier partners, who joined the campaign by supplying popular products in limited-edition pink versions. By standing behind the cause, they helped to drive both awareness and sales – proving that the hardware industry can come together for the greater good.

Absa Business Banking supports hardware and DIY businesses with appropriate sector expertise and solutions

During the Covid-19 pandemic, hardware and DIY (do-ityourself) stores saw a significant increase in sales. With people suddenly in need of a dedicated workspace at home, the demand for building supplies and home improvement equipment rose steeply.

Many corporates realised that they could reduce their rental expenses and instituted a hybrid or rotational working model, which supported the trend for home renovations for an extended period.

Amidst widespread load shedding in 2023, the economy came under pressure, consumers pulled back and activity in the sector became a lot more muted.

Over the past year, the sector has started seeing renewed activity – owners of business premises have increasingly been holding on to their properties for longer, necessitating some maintenance spending. According to Absa’s Merchant Spend Analytics Report, card spend related to the building and hardware subcategory grew 3% month-on-month in May this year.

Going forward, the performance of the sector will be closely linked to the health of the consumer, and while many of them remain under financial strain, the hardware and DIY sector continues to show steady growth, particularly in regions with significant development like the North West and Limpopo. The Gauteng province also currently benefits from sustained maintenance by consumers as well as businesses.

The road ahead

For many business owners operating in the hardware and DIY sector, working capital finance can be a challenge –they typically receive deliveries from suppliers on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and if they do not have sufficient funds or an appropriate overdraft facility in place, replenishing stock becomes a challenge.

To solve for this, Absa Business Banking uses a bespoke valuation method that determines an appropriate overdraft limit, which allows businesses in this sector to tap into

facilities. Not only does it allow the business to replenish stock timeously, but it also enables them to build a credit history that will come in handy when they need finance for expansion.

From a payments acceptance perspective, our 7-day settlement also solves for this. The solution enables business owners to receive their settlements every day of the week – including weekends and public holidays. This allows them to manage their finances more effectively.

Furthermore, as e-commerce continues to grow, selling products online presents a valuable opportunity for businesses to reach new customer bases. However, building an online store, handling inventory, and setting up payment systems can be overwhelming. To simplify this process, Absa, in partnership with Visa and littlefish introduced ShopRed –a platform designed to help businesses display and sell their products online. The platform provides user-friendly tools for website creation and hosting, built-in payment integration, market access and sophisticated analytics to streamline the management of both physical and online inventory.

In addition, having a clearer understanding of customer profiles and how a business is performing compared to competitors can help business owners make smarter decisions when it comes to local marketing strategies. To support this need, Absa’s Pocketflow Lite, a web-based analytics tool for merchants, provides comprehensive insights into spending patterns, business growth, consumer behaviour and transaction data at both merchant and broader industry levels.

in the hardware world.

His influence reaches far beyond our walls. Many of you have worked with him directly, shared stories, solved problems, and built things — literally and figuratively — that will stand the test of time. That’s the kind of legacy that doesn’t retire.

We’ll be celebrating Craig in the coming months, and we’ll share more soon. For now, we simply say: thank you, Craig… You’ve built more than a company — you’ve built a legacy.

Within minutes of the announcement going live on the Academy social media pages, hundreds of messages poured in echoing the sentiments in this tribute to a true leader. Due to space constraints we have only included the first tribute received and that of our own- Natalie Sanders.

Dear Craig,

As I reflect this morning on our journey together, I feel the need to extend my deepest gratitude for the long and enjoyable relationship we have shared over the past 30 years. It has been an absolute privilege to work alongside you and to witness firsthand the qualities that have defined your remarkable career.

On a personal note, I have known Craig since I started working at DIY Trade News over 30 years ago. I clearly remember when they did their management buyout and how the company did a complete u-turn under Craig’s leadership. Despite being at the helm, he has always attended events in person, which speaks volumes about his dedication and the respect he holds for the industry to which he has devoted most of his working life. Always smiling and quick to make a joke, Craig will be sorely missed. I wish him everything of the best for the future.

THE DIY DEPOT

a.b.e.® Saint-Gobain, a leader in innovative building solutions, proudly announces the launch of 4-metal DTM, a revolutionary water-based anti-rust metal primer and topcoat designed to redefine durability and ease of use in metal surface treatment. Water-based binders are increasing in popularity and for good reason.

Introducing 4-metal DTM: The future of metal protection is here

4-metal DTM is not just another coating, it is a 4-in-1 solution that simplifies highperformance metal protection. Engineered with advanced self-crosslinking, multiphase acrylic dispersion technology, this product offers direct-to-metal, direct-to-rust, primer coat, and topcoat capabilities in one convenient application.

DTM coatings combine the physical characteristics of a top-coat system and a primer in one layer, saving time and money on the application process, while waterborne technology offers a lower VOC profile. Corrosion protection with high performance and low environmental impact.

KEY BENEFITS

• Outstanding corrosion resistance: Certified to ISO 12944-6 standards, 4-metal DTM delivers long-term protection in C3 (High) and C4 (Medium) corrosive environments

• Superior adhesion and durability: Whether applied to mild steel, galvanised steel, aluminium, or stainless steel, it

ensures excellent substrate and inter-coat adhesion

• Quick drying and easy application: Touch dry in just 30 minutes and hard dry in two hours, it can be applied by brush, roller, or spray — straight from the container.

• Eco-conscious and user-friendly: With low odour, water clean-up, and no need for harsh solvents, it’s ideal for both interior and exterior use.

Available in grey, red, black, and white, 4-metal DTM offers a semi-matt, smooth finish that resists UV, abrasion, and scratches — making it perfect for industrial, commercial, and residential applications. 4-metal used as an anti-rust prime coat can be overcoated with water-based bitumen, acrylic, polyurethane, and alkyd enamel coatings.

BUILT TO LAST

With a projected lifespan of over 15 years in C3 environments and

10-15 years in C4 conditions, 4-metal DTM is a smart investment in long-term asset protection. New build and refurbishment projects benefit from the specific advantages that 4-metal DTM provides. Metal protection applicators like the DIYer, waterproofing contractor, general contractor, and painter for maintenance and refurbishment projects will be able to use it as a complete direct-to-metal coating or as a primer for waterproofing and other paints.

superflex launches compact counter display unit for hardware retailers

Hardware retailers know that space at the counter is prime real estate, the perfect place for products that drive impulse purchases while still offering real value to end-users.

Grindtech has just introduced a new compact counter display unit designed to do exactly that.

The unit makes clever use of minimal space while showcasing 25 neatly packaged five-packs of Superflex slimline cutting discs. With a bold and colourful design highlighting the discs’ unique selling points, it is a display that draws attention and drives sales without cluttering the counter.

The Superflex industrial slimline cutting disc is suitable for use on both steel and stainless steel, delivering fast, clean cuts with less buildup, oxidation, and fewer

burrs compared to conventional cutting discs. Fully reinforced for safety and quality tested to the same high standards as Superflex’s other products, these discs give users the benefit of industrial performance on demand.

For retailers, the packaging adds further convenience, as the units are shink-wrapped and sold in twin-packs, keeping stock tidy and ready for quick

sales at the point of purchase. This innovation combines functionality with clever merchandising, helping hardware stores maximise counter space while offering a professional-grade product that customers can trust.

introducing sikawall®-165 water resistant wall putty

In every home, office, or building project, walls are more than just structural elements — they are the canvas that holds the entire look and feel of a space together.

But ask any contractor, builder, or DIY enthusiast, and they will tell you: achieving a perfectly smooth finish is often easier said than done. Cracks, uneven textures, and poor adhesion can turn what should be a proud showcase into a constant frustration.

THAT IS EXACTLY WHERE SIKA SOUTH AFRICA’S LATEST INNOVATION, SIKAWALL®-165, STEPS IN

As a one-component cementitious fine finishing coat, SikaWall-165 wall putty is designed to take the stress out of wall and ceiling skimming. Its unique formulation offers excellent adhesion and a silky-smooth finish, making it the go-to solution for those who demand both quality and ease of use. Suitable for both internal and external applications, this product empowers builders and homeowners alike to transform walls into flawless surfaces ready for paint, décor, or simply admiration.

THE BENEFITS THAT MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

What makes SikaWall-165 wall putty stand out is not just its water resistance — it enables faster, easier application and delivers cost efficiency from start to finish, because with Sika, you only need to do it

right once. This fine finishing coat delivers a beautifully smooth surface on walls and ceilings, eliminating imperfections and ensuring a level professional look every time. Thanks to its greater durability and flexibility, you can trust it to perform under pressure, whether indoors or outdoors.

Application is quick and simple. SikaWall-165 wall putty is easy to mix — just add water — and easy to apply, with a quick-drying formula that helps customers finish jobs on schedule. The thickness of the plaster can be varied, reducing waste and giving contractors more control over their material use. And because it

is non-combustible, and water-resistant, they can expect a finish that not only looks good but lasts for years.

There is also a clear visual advantage: its clean white finish means it reduces the need for multiple coats. Customers can go straight from coat to colour, cutting out unnecessary steps and reducing overall project costs. Combine this with its excellent adhesion and long-term durability, and the product pays for itself by saving both time and money.

But this launch is about more than just a new bag on the shelf. Sika understands that every project comes with challenges — from tight deadlines to client expectations that leave no room for compromise. SikaWall-165 wall putty was developed to solve those problems. Its ease of mixing and application reduces labour time, while its durable finish cuts down on the need for rework. For small and large business contractors, that means completing jobs faster and maintaining a reputation for quality craftsmanship. For homeowners, it means peace of mind knowing that what’s applied today will stand the test of time tomorrow.

WHY RETAILERS SHOULD STOCK SIKAWALL-165 WALL PUTTY?

Because it is a water-resistant wall putty that is so easy to use. It is simple, effective, and backed by a brand that has been setting the standard in construction innovation for more than a century. In other words, it is the finishing touch your customers have been waiting for

At Sika, we believe in solutions that let you relax, because when you build with Sika, you’re doing it right the first time. And doing it right the first time means no costly rework, no callbacks, and no wasting money redoing a project a few months later. Instead, customers invest once, apply with confidence, and move on to the next job knowing threir reputation — and their client’s satisfaction — are in safe hands.

With SikaWall-165 wall putty, every finish is a watertight flawless finish.

40 years

of strong foundations and lasting legacies

In celebrating a 40-year journey shaped by vision, resilience and growth, Build it stands proudly as the largest building and hardware merchant in Southern Africa, with 397 stores trading in five countries.

The brand has empowered entrepreneurs to achieve independence, build wealth and create a better future for their families. In return, retail members have remained loyal and grateful for the invaluable lessons, hands-on experiences and inspirational moments that defined their journeys. In celebrating 40 years of strong foundations and lasting legacies, we pay tribute to two phenomenal retailers who have excelled at building the brand and a proud legacy.

Herman Steyn, proud owner of Build it Potchefstroom, celebrated his store’s 20th birthday last month. He has walked a long and hard journey with Build it, staring adversity in the face many times. Having endured many challenges he decided to throw in the towel. Having taken this bold decision, he found himself driving behind a truck with a sign that read, "BE A WARRIOR, NOT A WORRIER!" That was all the motivation he needed to keep his store. Continuing to work hard and fearlessly, today he stands proud in a beautiful store with a 20-year legacy.

When Ray Herbert and his family were approached by Build it to convert their small hardware store in Kokstad to the Build it model, he very bravely told them that his family didn’t need Build it. They were doing well in their little store, so he didn’t see the need to make any changes. Build it, on the other hand, was quite persistent and eventually, in 2004, convinced Herbert to join the brand. In Herbert’s own words, the move changed their lives!

Today, 21 years later, Herbert is enjoying retirement and indulging in his love for deepsea fishing while his sons, Dylan and Ryan are carrying the legacy forward. Maintaining the Build it values of family, passion and entrepreneurship, they proudly own six very

Extremely positive about the future of Build it, Steyn speaks with great pride of Build it managing director, Hawie du Preez.

“We could not have asked for a better person to lead the brand. Hawie is open-minded, deliberate and planned in his leadership strategy and he listens. With him steering the ship, the future of Build it is extremely bright.”

successful stores across KwaZulu-Natal.

“I didn’t think we needed Build it, but joining the brand changed our lives. It’s been about family, community and building something real,” Herbert explains.

An award-winning retail member, with awardwinning stores, Herbert is extremely proud of Build it and in wishing the brand a very happy 40th birthday, his advice to all up-and-coming Build it retail members is to “never lose focus of the family values on which the brand was built”.

Build it managing director, Hawie du Preez maintains that Build it’s 40-year legacy has always been and continues to be one for families. He goes on to say that “few brands place people at the heart of everything like Build it does, and there-in lies the strength and success of the brand”.

Like Herbert and Steyn, Build it boasts many retail members across Southern Africa who have worked tirelessly to build the brand and their own legacies, and they continue to do so, every single day. Deeply rooted in the communities they serve, they are in the trenches building the brand, uplifting individuals, giving dignity to lesser-advantaged families, while at the same time building lasting legacies their families can be proud of, for generations to come!

A PROUD COMMUNITY LANDMARK SINCE 1975

50 years of service

This October, Alberton Hardware celebrates an extraordinary milestone: 50 years of continuous service to the Alberton community. A true local institution, the store has become a trusted partner to contractors, DIY enthusiasts, industrial clients, and loyal residents alike.

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO LOCAL LEGEND

Founded in 1975, Alberton Hardware began as a small, ambitious venture by three friends — Tommy Lee, Brian O’Friel, and Joe Small — who shared a bold vision: to establish hardware stores that could serve the growing needs of Alberton’s developing suburbs.

into a beloved local landmark is an inspiring chapter in the town’s history.

A FAMILY AFFAIR – THEN AND NOW

// Alberton Hardware has transformed from a single-store dream into a beloved local landmark //

Joe Small, (Randhart Hardware), Brian O’Friel (Alberton Hardware) and Tommy Lee (Brackendowns Hardware) opened their own stores. This collaboration led to the formation of the Randhart Group of Companies.

Of the original stores, Alberton Hardware is the sole survivor — standing tall today as a testament to hard work, perseverance, and deeply held community values. Its transformation from a single-store dream

From the beginning, Alberton Hardware has been a family-run business at heart. Founders Brian and Jenny O’Friel opened the store alongside one loyal employee, Phillip Khulu, who remained with the business until his retirement in 2015.

Today, the second generation — Patrick O’Friel (Sales), Garth O’Friel (Buying), and Diane O’Friel (Finance) — continue the legacy. Joining them is the third generation, Brendon O’Friel (Sales), ensuring the business stays rooted in family and service.

Our strength lies in our people. With over 40 staff members and more than 550 years of combined experience, many of our team have

been with Alberton Hardware for decades — a true reflection of loyalty and knowledge you can trust. ”This October, Alberton Hardware celebrates an extraordinary milestone: 50 years of continuous service to the Alberton community. A true local institution, the store has become a trusted partner to contractors, DIY enthusiasts, industrial clients, and loyal residents alike. Patrick joined in 1989 after completing his military service in Cape Town. Garth, after years working in London and Australia, returned in 1993 bringing global experience to local operations. Together, the O’Friel family leads from the front — working the sales floor, managing inventory, and building personal relationships with customers.

MILESTONES THAT BUILT A LEGACY

Over the decades, Alberton Hardware has seen significant growth and innovation. One of the most defining moments was the original construction of the store — transforming an open plot into a thriving retail space. A major upgrade came with the addition of a mezzanine floor, doubling floor space and boosting stock capacity to enhance the shopping experience. Over time, space for new additions was needed. Brian and Jenny purchased the building next door and expanded it further when linking three adjoining shops into a single expanded space. This additional space is where the existing paint department is situated.

HONOURING 50 YEARS –A GOLDEN CELEBRATION

After marking its 40th anniversary with pride a decade ago, this year’s golden jubilee promises to be even more special. From 13 October to 15 November, Alberton Hardware will celebrate with exclusive anniversary promotions and once-off supplier specials — a heartfelt thank-you to the community that has made this journey possible.

A birthday bash is also on the cards — celebrating five decades of customer loyalty, dedicated staff, and enduring family values.

ROOTED IN THE PAST, READY FOR THE FUTURE

Through economic shifts, industry changes, and evolving customer needs, Alberton Hardware has remained a steady, reliable presence — a survivor, a supporter, and a symbol of community.

In August 2019, the store launched a full ecommerc website, now offering over 12000 products and delivering nationwide. The digital catalogue continues to expand daily, ensuring Alberton Hardware is ready to serve the next generation of builders and dreamers.

As Alberton Hardware looks ahead, one thing remains unchanged: a commitment to service, to family, and to the people of Alberton.

// Alberton Hardware expresses its sincere appreciation to all its suppliers, without whom this celebration would not be possible //

REMEMBERING THE PILLARS BEHIND THE BUSINESS

The Alberton Hardware story would be incomplete without honouring the loved ones who helped build its foundation. From behind-the-scenes bookkeeping to managing logistics, every contribution made a difference.

WE REMEMBER WITH GRATITUDE AND LOVE:

Their legacy lives on in every aisle, every helping hand, and every satisfied customer.

Over the years, many family members have contributed their time, energy, and love to the store’s success. Paint Club’s Palette of Possibilities Conference 2025: Exploring new horizons

Paint Club’s 2025 Conference, hosted at the stately Kievits Kroon Wine Estate in Pretoria, was a gathering of members and friends, as well as a clear marker of momentum. Held under the theme ‘Palette of Possibilities’, the event brought together member stores, suppliers, and partners for three days of practical insight, strategic vision, and solid relationship-building.

A FIRST FOR THE FORMAT: THE SUPPLIER TRADE SHOW

This year introduced a new addition to the conference: a dedicated Trade Show, giving Paint Expert suppliers a live platform to display their latest products and innovations. Members welcomed the handson experience — touching, testing, and talking through products in real time. The supplier stands remained open throughout tea and lunch breaks, allowing for ongoing engagement in a relaxed setting.

DAY ONE:

STRATEGY, INNOVATION AND COLOUR

The first day belonged to the Paint Club head office team, who unpacked 2024 results, reviewed the first half of 2025, and laid out the 2026 roadmap. Key topics included national sales and marketing efforts, the group’s evolving training programme, and upcoming product innovations and launches. One of the most anticipated announcements was the reveal of Paint Club’s first Bespoke Colour Collection, created exclusively for member stores, marking a bold new direction in colour authority. Later in the day, two standout store owners. Paint Centre Illovo and Paint Palette Rustenburg, shared firsthand insights on launching new stores under the Paint Expert banner. Their real-world feedback set a practical, motivational tone for the days ahead.

DAY TWO:

LEADERSHIP, PARTNERSHIPS AND PRACTICAL TOOLS

CEO Gary van der Merwe kicked off the second day with a sharp recap and outlook. Leadership specialist Erica Anderson then led a no-nonsense session titled ‘Real Skills for Real Change’, equipping members with grounded tools to lead with impact and intention.

Plascon’s mid-morning session followed, with Andries Pretorius outlining strategic focus areas, Gerrie Stemmet speaking to growth opportunities, and Les Frank highlighting upcoming marketing initiatives.

Their message was consistent: Plascon remains invested in helping Paint Expert stores grow from the inside out.

THE AFTERNOON SHIFTED INTO DEEPER DIVES WITH SUPPLIER PARTNERS:

• Hamilton’s Brushware’s Mandy Muller outlined new innovations tailored to category management

• Delaney Impey from Flash Harry walked members through what’s next for the brand’s waterproofing and repair ranges.

ingco concept store launch: steel and pipes centurion leads the way

Following the success of INGCO’s Shop-in-Shop format, which has already transformed hardware stores across South Africa, the brand has now taken the next bold step: the INGCO Concept Store.

// Following the success of INGCO's Shop-in-Shop format, the brand has now taken the next bold step: The INGCO concept store //

Both initiatives are designed to work within or alongside existing client stores, not in competition with them. The Shop-in-Shop creates a high-impact branded display area, while the Concept Store goes even further, turning underused or dead retail space into a full INGCO-powered standalone shopping destination. These rollouts are driven by INGCO’s retail partners themselves, who want to maximise the brand’s drawing power to their own stores.

STEEL AND PIPES CENTURION SHOWS HOW IT’S DONE

On 6 September, Steel and Pipes Centurion unveiled the first INGCO Concept Store with a grand opening that drew an overwhelming response. What was once a disused ‘dead T-off’ area of the shop has now been transformed into a standalone high-impact INGCO only store, complete with massive exterior signage that ensures it can’t be missed, some joked it was ‘visible from the moon’. Despite concerns that the Springboks vs All Blacks game at 9am might dampen turnout, crowds began gathering from as early as 5am. By the time the ribbon was cut at 7:45am, the queue snaked the entire length of the property. A party atmosphere prevailed with balloons, a marimba band, a DJ, and dancing. Boerewors rolls and coffee were on sale for the patient shoppers.

THE POWER OF PULLING CROWDS

The event proved just how magnetic INGCO has become. The first 50 shoppers received tokens for a free electric drill with the purchase of an angle grinder, snapped up within minutes. The opening specials flew off shelves, with many lines selling out in the first hour.

Angelo Angelos, Shawn Gardiner and Ian du Plessis (Co owners of Steel and Pipes Centurion), Lize Swanepoel.
Marimba band and dancers welcomed shoppers. Shawn manning the entrance turnstyle.

Owner, Shawn Gardiner, found himself managing crowd control at the turnstile, letting customers in one by one to avoid overcrowding. “We even had a client drive in from Vanderbijlpark just to attend at the opening” he said, adding that he was overwhelmed by the turnout

A ‘SHOE STORE FOR MEN’

The comment of the day summed up the atmosphere: “Finally, a shoe store for men has arrived in Centurion.”

The quip highlighted INGCO’s unique appeal, men (and plenty of women) queued up, excited to shop tools with the same passion others bring to clothing.

MORE TO COME

If anyone doubted whether a dedicated power tool concept store alongside an

existing retailer could work, Steel and Pipes Centurion has put those concerns to rest. The next opening was Skebet Hardware in Brits, who cut their ribbon on 13 September.

essential hardware’s wild wild west trade show

Complete with a traditional saloon, bank, and even a jail, the venue was transformed into a true western frontier. Adding to the fun, a mechanical bull had members and suppliers lining up to test their rodeo skills. The playful activities perfectly complemented the networking, deals, and digital innovation on

offer, making the 2025 Wild Wild West Trade Day an unforgettable experience for all.

This year’s Trade Day was bigger than ever, with more stands, more energy, and more opportunities for the Essential members! True to its tagline, Essential is so much more than just a buying group, the team rolled out gamechanging initiatives to supercharge both sales and profits for its members, from an AI-powered marketing drive bringing fresh customers instore, to innovative growth strategies designed to help every member thrive.

The 2025 Essential Trade Day took place at Nasrec on 17 August, and this year’s ‘Wild Wild West’ theme made for an exciting day with a mix of deals, industry networking, and digital innovation.

This year Essential Hardware made the event even more efficient and user-friendly with a digital QR code system:

• Once attendance was confirmed, each retailer received a unique digital ticket via WhatsApp

• On arrival, their QR code was scanned, and a personalised name badge — including all contact details plus order and lead QR codes — was printed instantly

• The front of the badge allowed suppliers to scan retailer details, while

• By logging in to the trade day portal (members.essential.portal.com) using the details on their badge, members could scan supplier QR codes at each stand, earning entries into the stand visitation competition and making the ordering process quick and seamless. power build power fest 2025: a festival of business, innovation and fun

Power Build’s fourth annual Power Fest once again confirmed its place as one of the most anticipated fixtures on the hardware and building materials retail calendar. From 27–29 August, the Durban ICC was transformed into a vibrant showcase of trade, partnership, and entertainment.

What makes Power Fest unique is the way it blends high-level business sessions with a celebratory festival atmosphere, creating an environment where deals are done as easily over a cup of coffee as they are on the exhibition floor. With over 600 retail members and more than 300 listed suppliers across Southern Africa, Power Build has become far more than a buying group – it has become a network of collaboration, innovation, and shared advantage.

The festival opened on 27 August at the Hilton Hotel, where delegates were welcomed and registered via Vermont Sales’ efficient VS Events platform, a system tried and tested at their own exhibitions and now seamlessly carried into Power Fest. Registration was quick, allowing attendees to move straight into reconnecting with colleagues and meeting suppliers. The hotel lobby buzzed with anticipation, with familiar faces greeting one another like old friends and new delegates eager to see what all the talk of ‘The Unfair Advantage’ was about.

ARCADE ADVENTURE FUN DAY

Promac Paints set the tone for the day with their Arcade Adventure Fun Day, an inspired throwback to the golden age of arcades. The room was alive with colour and energy – racing simulators roared, ping pong balls bounced, claw machines gripped and missed, while a photobooth with AI-enhancing capability produced playful keepsakes for members and suppliers. Delegates swapped their usual business suits for a dose of nostalgia and laughter, while Promac’s unmistakable Rubber Duck branding, splashed boldly across the hall, kept the corporate connection firmly in view. It was a clever way to get members relaxed and suppliers remembered, while reinforcing the idea that Power Build events are not just about business, but about shared experiences.

BEACH EVENING

The evening brought the first of the themed dinners, hosted by Ingco with a lively tropical ‘beach vibes’ theme. The décor was bright, the cocktails flowed, and the atmosphere was unmistakably festive. MC Pieter Koen – singer, presenter, and consummate entertainer –kept the evening light and engaging. He blended humour with professionalism, making sure the sponsors – Ingco, Promac, Vermont Sales, GlueDevil, and Trade Build –were properly recognised while ensuring the energy in the room never dipped.

The official welcome saw Power Build directors Jacques Joubert, Rashid Mohammed and Armand Feldtmann take to the stage. Feldtmann delivered a heartfelt speech, acknowledging the sponsors for their critical role in making Power Fest possible. He recounted the story behind the decision to bring the event to KwaZuluNatal for the first time. Having hosted the previous three editions in Gauteng, the directors were persuaded by the warm hospitality of the Hilton Hotel staff, who not only welcomed them but passionately promoted the Durban ICC as the perfect

TRADE DAY

The following day, 28 August, the ICC was reconfigured into the Power Build Trade Show. From 08h00 to 16h00, suppliers unveiled new product ranges, ran exclusive deals, and engaged directly with Power Build retailers. The floor buzzed with activity – buyers comparing notes, suppliers explaining new lines, and deals being negotiated in every corner. Trade Build, the sponsor of Trade Day, emphasised the importance of creating a professional platform where business could thrive. Among the highlights was GlueDevil’s 30th birthday celebration. Their stand was a sea of red, with balloons, banners and a giant cake cut by owners Shane and Jason Nadauld. It was both a celebration of longevity and a statement of brand strength, and suppliers and members alike joined in the festivities, cake slice in hand.

venue. Feldtmann quipped that the decision was easy: “Power Build will be having a beach party in Durban.”

The speech then shifted from storytelling to vision-setting. Feldtmann reminded the audience that Power Fest was more than a networking opportunity – it was a platform to break boundaries, share ideas and create partnerships that would ripple through the industry for years. He highlighted the group’s progress since the last Power Fest, particularly the launch of TenX, a programme designed to multiply rebates for members through high-margin consumable products while easing administrative strain for suppliers. Central to this is the evolution of The Honeypot, Power Build’s central digital platform. Once a trade-show tool, The Honeypot now enables members to place and track live orders both during and beyond the event, creating real-time efficiencies and data-driven opportunities for suppliers who lack such systems in the field. Feldtmann closed with a challenge: “Think bigger, connect deeper and dare to imagine the impossible, because collaboration turns sparks into wildfires.”

Ingco MD Angelo Angelos followed with his company’s story – a journey from the early Skillcraft days to becoming a global brand. He unveiled Ingco’s new store-in-store and concept store models, designed to bring international-standard merchandising into local markets. Dinner was served with a trademark Power Build twist: five placemats had been printed with tiny ants, and their unsuspecting owners each won a cordless Ingco drill set. Laughter filled the room as winners held up their prizes to applause, proving once again that at Power Fest, business, and fun go hand in hand.

FORMULA 1 EVENING

That evening, the venue was transformed again – this time into a glamorous Formula 1 themed dinner, hosted by GlueDevil. The GlueDevil team fully embraced the theme, dressed head to toe as racing drivers. MC Pieter Koen returned to keep the evening lively, while GlueDevil MD Shane Nadauld

shared a moment of humility, saying it had taken them “Twenty years to become an overnight success.” The audience laughed, but the message was clear: growth is a long game, built on persistence, partnerships, and trust.

Dinner included another playful twist: some placemats hid the Power Build character, IZMA the bee. Guests who discovered it won a GlueDevil hamper.

THE BRIAN’S CHOICE BEST STANDS AWARDS WERE THEN ANNOUNCED:

Trade Build director Muhammad Sajid also addressed the gathering, reminding everyone that the trade show was more than a meeting point for goods – it was a bridge connecting people, industries, and aspirations. “Trade is not only about goods,” he said, “but about trust, respect and shared prosperity.” It was a message that resonated deeply with the room.

The Formula 1 Grand Prix theme tied into the evening’s grand highlight: the announcement of the eight Power Build members who had won tickets to the Singapore F1 Grand Prix. Sponsored by Academy Brushware, GlueDevil, Lasher, Matus, Promac Paints, Ruwag, Sephaku Cement and Stevensons Paints, the winners represented the diversity of Power Build’s membership – from Cosave Power Build to Handi Inn DIY, from Mega Paints to Crown Discount Hardware. The “…but wait, there’s more!”  surprise prize for Power Build Store of the Year – went to Power Build Doornpoort, recognised for outstanding performance across multiple criteria. Their prize included a ninth Grand Prix package, ensuring their efforts were rewarded on the global stage.

It was the perfect combination of spectacle and celebration, a reminder that Power Fest is as much about shared joy as it is about shared business.

On 29 August, delegates gathered for breakfast at their hotels before departing, tired but energised, their heads full of new ideas, deals, and possibilities. Power Fest 2025 once again proved why it has become an unmissable event. For members, it reaffirmed the strength of belonging to a group that provides not only buying power but also platforms, tools and relationships that create The Unfair Advantage. For suppliers, it reinforced the importance of direct engagement with over 600 retail members who are united, independent, and ambitious. Power Build Power Fest is more than just an event – it is a testament to what happens when business, innovation and camaraderie are brought together under one roof.
