This issue of Analytical Reporter brings you a diverse collection of articles exploring the latest breakthroughs in forensic testing, pH instrumentation, and water testing & purification. We're also particularly excited to feature the round-up news of the analytica Lab Africa show, which was by all accounts a resounding success!
Moreover, the excitement doesn’t stop with the lab expo. My sister, who lives in Nottingham, UK, recently told me about an exhibition she had been to. She is a graphic illustrator and writer, not a scientist, yet she was captivated by an innovative LEGO installation which brings the world of quantum science to the layman.
Researchers from the University of Nottingham’s Gravity Laboratory, alongside student LEGO enthusiasts, have developed unique LEGO-based interferometer kits to make quantum science more accessible and engaging.
The kits are designed for secondary and older pupils, embracing a hands-on approach with LEGO bricks that are suitable for classroom use.
The fully functional LEGO interferometer sets are designed to replicate professional optical equipment, bridging the gap between abstract concepts of cutting-edge technology and tangible demonstrations that captivate live audiences. With easy-to-follow instructions, these kits serve as valuable teaching aids, inspiring the next generation of scientists. Featuring lasers, mirrors and beamsplitters, the kits demonstrate the principles of interferometry. When two laser beams are combined, they create a delicate, alternating pattern of dark and bright stripes, known as an interference pattern.
This pattern is highly sensitive to even the tiniest changes in the lengths of the beams, otherwise imperceivable to our senses. Interferometry has a range of practical applications that touch our daily lives. For example, it enables eye doctors to capture detailed images of the retina, helping in precise diagnoses and treatment of eye conditions. It's also used to improve navigation systems by providing us with the most accurate rotation sensors.
In science, interferometry plays a crucial role in detecting gravitational waves, which are ripples in spacetime caused by massive cosmic events, allowing astronomers to gain new insights into the Universe.
This project, titled Photon Bricks and led by Dr Patrik Svancara, a Research Fellow from the School of Mathematical Sciences, is funded under the UKRI’s Quantum Technologies for Fundamental Physics Programme, which demonstrates how quantum technologies can explore key physics questions, such as dark matter, gravity, and the quantum properties of elementary particles.
Says Dr Patrik Svancara: “Photon Bricks have completely transformed the way I see my research.
Developing this project made me realise just how incredibly similar my work as a quantum scientist is to the hands-on creativity of building with LEGO.
It’s an absolute thrill to show the public that cutting-edge research isn’t just complex equations.
It’s so much more about curiosity, problem-solving, and gradually bringing ideas to life, brick by brick!”
The significance of quantum science has been recognised this year, with the United Nations declaring 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology to raise public awareness of its importance and impact on various aspects of life. Quantum mechanics led to the development of things like lasers, light-emitting diodes, transistors, medical imaging, electron microscopes, and a host of other modern devices.
Your cell phone would not exist without the science of quantum mechanics!

Green cement represents a revolutionary approach in the construction industry, focusing on sustainability and environmental responsibility. This innovative material is developed by incorporating recycled materials and utilising advanced techniques such as heat treatment, surface area analysis, grinding, and elemental analysis characterisation to determine the characteristics of these materials.
The production of green cement involves replacing traditional carbon-rich limestone with alternative materials like calcined clays, slags, manufactured sands, and fly ash. These materials not only reduce the carbon footprint but also enhance the properties of the cement. At Verder, we strive to support research and industrial laboratories to enable the progress in the production of innovative and sustainable materials.
The construction industry is increasingly focused on sustainability, and one promising approach is the use of waste materials in cement production.
Hardened cement, as HCP, is a key component of concrete and can benefit significantly from the incorporation of various waste materials, both in terms of environmental impact and performance.
Hardened cement paste (HCP) is a porous, heterogeneous material mainly composed of Calcium Silicate Hydrates (C-S-H). Its properties and structure are influenced by moisture content, with pore size distribution being nonlinear and affected by relative humidity. Surface forces and capillary condensation play significant roles in HCP behaviour.
The BELPORE mercury porosimeters, available in three models (LP, MP, HP), measure pore diameters from 3.6 nanometers to 1 millimeter using the P.A.S.C.A.L. principle for optimised pressure control, enabling rapid, precise measurements with low running costs and comprehensive data analysis capabilities.

Fast and robust determination according to current ISO, EPA, and ASTM standards using direct measurement
Determination of ammonium is one of the most crucial applications for sectors such as water and waste-water analysis, fertilisers, and others. Metrohm Application Bulletin AB-133 describes the determination of ammonium by ion measurement according to ISO 6778, EPA 359.2, EPA 305.3, and ASTM D1426. Tips and tricks on how to deal with possible interferences, sample preparation, and handling of the ammonia ion selective electrode are also covered.
While there exist photometric methods for ammonium, they are rather time-consuming (up to 90 min. reaction time). Moreover, photometric determination in opaque solutions is always a challenge. Determination by direct measurement using an ion selective electrode,
on the other hand, is faster and more robust. Hence, measurements can be easily performed in waste-water, liquid fertiliser, and urine, as well as in soil extracts.
Determination of ammonia in ammonium salts, of the nitric acid content in nitrates, and of the nitrogen content of organic compounds with the ion-selective ammonia electrode is based on the principle that the ammonium ion is released as ammonia gas upon addition of excess caustic soda:
NH4+ + OH– → NH3 + H2O
The outer membrane of the electrode allows the ammonia to diffuse through. The change in the pH value of the inner electrolyte solution is monitored by a combined glass electrode. If the substance to be measured is not present in the form of an ammonium salt, it must first be converted into such a salt. To this end, organic nitrogen compounds, especially amino compounds, are digested according to Kjeldahl by heating with concentrated sulfuric acid. The carbon is oxidised to carbon dioxide in the process, while the organic nitrogen is transformed quantitatively into ammonium sulphate.

Maintaining air purity in controlled environments is essential, and Airborne Particle Counters (APCs) are critical tools for contamination control in cleanrooms and similar settings. There are two main types: portable and fixed-point remote APCs - each suited to specific monitoring needs.
In partnership with Lighthouse Worldwide Solutions (LWS), we offer a complete portfolio of airborne particle counters designed to meet the demanding requirements of cleanroom and controlled environment monitoring.
Portable particle counters: Flexible and easy to use
Portable airborne particle counters are userfriendly mobile units that collect and analyse airborne particles on-site. They feature internal air sampling systems and can operate on battery or AC power, making them ideal for routine cleanroom checks and validations.
Portable airborne particle counters are differentiated by their airflow sample rates, which are reported in volume per minute in either Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM) or Litres per Minute (LPM).
The main types include:
Handheld units: Best for quick checks with low flow rates (≤0.1 CFM / 2.83 LPM)
• ApexZ3 standard flow units: The most widely used model for cleanroom monitoring (1.0 CFM / 28.3 LPM)
• ApexZ50 high flow units: Designed for rapid sampling and cleanroom certification (>1.0 CFM, up to 100 LPM)
Fixed-point remote particle countersContinuous, real-time monitoring:
Fixed-point remote airborne particle counters are smaller, more robust and less invasive than portable units. They can be installed directly on process equipment, cleanroom walls, or transport devices, making them ideal for continuous monitoring at critical control points where product integrity is at risk. They integrate easily with Building Management Systems (BMS), Facility Monitoring Systems (FMS), or Non-Viable Particle Monitoring Systems (NVPMS).

To streamline workflows and support upcoming ISO accreditation, the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at UNISA’s Florida campus has upgraded its former potting shed into a functional laboratory. As part of the upgrade, the lab acquired the robust Fritsch Pulverisette 19 Universal Cutting Mill, designed for grinding tough plant materials like bark into fine powder with greater precision. The new equipment, paired with a range of sieve sizes, allows them to grind material in stages - starting coarse and working down to a fine dust - ensuring durability and consistency.
Dr Garland More, Chief Laboratory Technologist and specialist in medicinal plant research, uses these finely ground samples to extract compounds for studies in antibiotics and other therapeutic applications.
“We extract compounds from plant powders using solvents like ethanol, hexane, or methanol, depending on the research,” he explains.
Current research includes anti-cancer studies using Hypoxis hemerocallidea (African potato) and Artemisia afra (African wormwood), which have shown strong antiviral and antidiabetic properties when synthesised into nanoparticles. “Some medicines can’t easily enter the body,” says Dr More. “Nanoparticles act as vehicles, carrying compounds into cells and the bloodstream, where they begin to work. We’re doing similar work with Moringa.” The research on medical plant metabolomics at UNISA’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences has already positioned it as a hub for groundbreaking plant-based medicinal research.

The Instrulab Super Sonic Ultrasonic Bath Series is an advanced, high-performance cleaning solution designed to deliver exceptional results across a wide range of industries. Whether used for laboratory research, industrial maintenance, or precision component cleaning, this ultrasonic cleaner ensures efficient, reliable, and deep cleaning — even for the most intricate and challenging parts.
Ultrasonic baths use high-frequency sound waves to agitate a cleaning solution, creating microscopic bubbles that remove contaminants from surfaces. This method, known as cavitation, is highly effective for cleaning delicate or complex components that would be difficult to clean using traditional methods. The ultrasonic cleaning process ensures thorough cleaning without physical contact, reducing the risk of damage to sensitive parts.
Key features include:
Degassing Function: Removes dissolved gases from solvents, which enhances cleaning efficiency by improving cavitation, ensuring more effective cleaning of complex or delicate items
• Industrial-Level Transducer: Equipped with a high-quality, industrial-grade transducer that guarantees durability, optimal performance, and uniform cavitation for demanding applicationsranging from electronics to automotive parts
• Lower Frequency (35 kHz): Ideal for cleaning larger surfaces and breaking down tougher stains, while maintaining the integrity of sensitive components. The lower frequency produces larger bubbles that effectively dislodge stubborn dirt and residues
Stainless Steel Construction: The SS304 tank offers durability and resistance to corrosion, making it easy to maintain and clean while providing a longlasting solution for demanding environments
International Certification: CE certified, ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety. Backed by a oneyear warranty, offering peace of mind and reliable after-sales support
Versatile applications:
• Solvent Degassing: Essential for applications like HPLC (HighPerformance Liquid Chromatography), where removing gases from mobile phases ensures cleaner, more accurate, and reliable results
Component Cleaning: Ideal for cleaning PCBs (printed circuit boards), electronics, and mechanical parts that require precise and gentle cleaning without causing damage
• Lab Equipment: Perfect for cleaning delicate laboratory instruments, such
as cuvettes, glassware, optical lenses, and medical tools, ensuring thorough removal of contaminants without risk of corrosion or abrasion
• Tough Stains & Residue Removal: Capable of removing a wide variety of contaminants, including oils, grease, dust, corrosion, and biological residues from both small and large parts
The Instrulab Super Sonic Ultrasonic Bath Series offers the following benefits:
1. Thorough Cleaning: The ultrasonic cleaning process is far more effective than manual scrubbing or traditional cleaning methods. It reaches hard-toaccess areas, ensuring complete cleaning without causing damage to the components
2. Time Efficiency: With ultrasonic baths,
cleaning times are significantly reduced compared to manual cleaning, which helps improve laboratory or production line efficiency
3. Gentle on Delicate Components: Since ultrasonic cleaning uses sound waves instead of abrasive methods, it is gentler on fragile components like optical lenses or precision medical tools
4. Environmentally Friendly: By reducing the need for harsh chemicals and solvents, ultrasonic cleaning is an ecofriendlier option, promoting sustainability in your cleaning processes
5. Increased Equipment Longevity: Regular ultrasonic cleaning helps extend the life of your equipment and tools by preventing the build-up of harmful residues that could lead to wear and tear over time
The Instrulab Super Sonic Ultrasonic Bath Series is engineered to meet the highest standards of performance, durability, and precision. Whether you're cleaning sensitive laboratory equipment, industrial parts, or complex components, this ultrasonic cleaner offers the ultimate cleaning solution for industries and laboratories worldwide.
