Adele’s business journey began in the late 90s when she ran the marketing department for her father’s four Timbercity stores in Gauteng. Her retail passion started early — sitting on tills as a primary school child in her father’s business. After earning a marketing degree in Cape Town, she served on the Timbercity National Franchise Committee, demonstrating strategic thinking in franchise operations.
Her hardware industry expertise flourished at Elliot (later Stein Build), where she spearheaded the BUCO brand rollout across former Elliot stores. She excelled at negotiating supplier deals, coordinating launch campaigns, and managing store openings — thriving under pressure and organisational challenges. After launching her own successful marketing company, Covid disrupted her client base. She then became instrumental
in building the TimBuild brand in South Africa, applying her extensive hardware retail knowledge and positive leadership style. Her decades of experience navigating franchise operations, supplier relationships, and brand development make her an invaluable asset to the hardware industry.

Suzette Geldenhuys grew up in a small town with four siblings. From a young age, she was passionate about the retail industry. DIY and Industrial Trade News joins AfriSam in paying tribute to a remarkable industry professional and much-loved colleague, Abel Mbewe, who passed away on 9 June 2025.
Abel was part of the AfriSam family for 25 years and led the Gauteng sales team for the past 18 years with dedication, perseverance, and grit. More than a highly respected sales leader, Abel was a kind, generous and inspiring presence –always ready with a joke, always willing to give his time, and always bringing a warm smile and a positive attitude wherever he went.
Abel leaves behind his wife Violet and his four daughters, Tanaka, Vuyo, Cleo and Chelsea. Our thoughts are with them, and with Abel’s friends, customers, and colleagues across the country, as we reflect on a life that touched so many.
This tribute was shared with us by AfriSam, and we echo it as our own. The DIY and Industrial Trade News team, too, will miss Abel deeply. DIY and Industrial Trade News recently learnt about Gareth Cole, the CEO of Powafix, and his involvement in a gruelling cross-country cycling challenge in aid of charity. Intrigued by the idea of a CEO swapping a boardroom for a bike saddle, we reached out to Cole to hear the full story. What he sent us was more than his recap of a 12-day, 1 200-km journey – it was a heartwarming account of how individuals and corporates can make a difference.
POWAFIX
I first heard about Trans Africa in October last year. I was sitting in church when a promotional video for the event played. My wife Debbie turned to me and said, “You should do that — it looks like a great adventure.” That was all the encouragement I needed. I signed up immediately.
At the time, it was just a bike ride to me. But the more I learned about the culture, heritage, and impact of the Trans Africa journey, the more I was drawn into its 11-year legacy — and most importantly, into the lives of the children we were riding for.
The FirstRand Trans Africa Adventure (FRTA) is about standing in the gap for children who, through no fault of their own, are unable to help themselves. It’s about using what’s in your hands — your time, talent, and influence — to make a difference wherever you are, with whatever you have.
At its heart, FRTA exists to leave a legacy: to build a sustainable Education Fund that covers the schooling costs for both current and future children of Ingane Yami Children’s Village.
Each rider committed to raising a minimum of R20 000 to participate, seeking support from corporates, friends, and family — and
many even contributed their own funds. To every sponsor who backed a rider: thank you for believing in them.
Once again, FirstRand pledged to double the amount raised by our top three fundraisers. This added an incredible R395 450 to the total — helping us reach a net fundraising amount of R1 411 000.
These funds will be carefully managed by the Board of Restoration of Hope and directed into the EduFund, where they’re needed most. The children — and future children — of Ingane Yami will receive a better education, a brighter future, and the ability to shape their own paths.
Riders trained for over six months. They gave up family time, used annual leave, raised money, and dug into their own pockets when needed. They broke bikes. Some broke bones. But they crossed the finish line.
This event would not have been possible without our incredible support team of four, who travelled with the riders, gave up time with their families, drove their own vehicles (which took a beating!), and spent up to 10 hours a day caring for our cyclists. True servant hearts.
Behind the scenes, our admin, marketing, and DIY liaison teams worked tirelessly. You may not see them in the photos, but they were the engine room of the entire operation.

Being part of this adventure — sharing each moment with such remarkable people — was a true privilege. The memories of these 12 days and 1 200km will stay with me forever.
I hope and pray that each of us finds our own way to pay it forward for the future generations of South Africa.

For many, the answer lies in strengthening their supplier networks through a voluntary buying group like Elite Star Trading (EST).
the Durban Trade Show at the Durban ICC in June and the Johannesburg event at Gallagher Convention Centre in early July –both of which were well supported, busy, and professionally executed.
To help boost attendance, EST hosted its regional annual general meetings (AGMs) for shareholder members at each venue, with presentations delivered by Louis Greef and Rob Suttle. These took place late-morning, resulting in a wave of visitors arriving just before the AGMs and staying throughout the day. The format worked well – giving suppliers ample time for meaningful oneon-one engagements with buyers.
In true EST style, snacks, tea, and coffee were available throughout the day, with lunch
provided – ensuring visitors were comfortable and had time to engage without rushing.
From our perspective, both the Durban and Johannesburg shows were an enormous success – with the Johannesburg show buzzing from start to finish. Several suppliers told us the Durban show delivered excellent results, including new store sign-ups and orders placed on the day – making the investment in attending more than worthwhile.
DIY and Industrial Trade News also had the opportunity to speak to a few exhibiting brands during the Durban leg. One such conversation – with Medal Paints – is included in the adjacent feature. It offers insight into how suppliers are supporting retailers during tough trading conditions.

This June, Gallagher Convention Centre played host to the 12 th edition of Big 5 Construct South Africa — and it did not disappoint. The show drew industry professionals from across the country and beyond, with exhibitors kept busy over the full three days.
Running from 18 to 20 June 2025 , the event filled Halls 4, 5, 6 and the large outdoor area. The clever layout meant visitors had to walk through the outdoor section to reach the main halls, ensuring that every exhibitor got their share of foot traffic. It was clear from the energy on the floor that, despite a tight economy, South Africa’s construction sector is holding firm and looking to the future.
DIY and Industrial Trade News’ focus was on the local suppliers – those brands and manufacturers that serve both the professional construction industry and the hardware retail trade. The main interest was especially on those exhibitors whose products cross over between contractor and DIY use, offering real sales potential
for our retailer readers – both in-store and on-site.
It was encouraging to see how busy the show was. Local and international brands were out in force, showcasing everything from tools and building materials to specialist solutions for construction, manufacturing, and retail. For retailers and distributors, it was a great opportunity to catch up with suppliers, scout new product ranges, and get a feel for what is driving demand in the months ahead.
One of the key features of the event were the Big 5 Talks, offering more than 15 free CPD-accredited sessions on everything from architecture and concrete technology to sustainability and digitalisation. The
sessions were well attended, with practical takeaways that resonated with professionals looking for real-world solutions.
Running alongside the main event was the South Africa Infrastructure & Water Expo, a strong new addition that zeroed in on infrastructure and water management – topics that are increasingly central to national planning.
Overall, Big 5 Construct South Africa 2025 lived up to its reputation as the construction industry’s leading trade show. For hardware and building supply retailers, it was a real chance to connect with the local supply chain, stay on top of international trends, and identify the next big sellers for their stores.

DIY projects are satisfying—but today’s abrasive aisle can feel daunting. Ranges have multiplied and different‑looking products often claim to do the same job.
