As predicted round 1 of the Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League competition kicked-off with a couple of interesting results. After an off-season that saw all eight clubs enter the first week of the Business Plaza Cup with changes to their playing rosters the unpredictable results were always a strong possibility.

The highly anticipated clash between Maitland and Cessnock ended up being a one-sided affair with the Pickers proving far too strong for a Goannas outfit that would be disappointed with their performance. A 36 to nil win in front of a big crowd was the perfect way for Maitland to christen their new home ground. The facilities on and off the field at Maitland Sportsground are first class and the home town support will continue to grow if the Pickers can maintain the performance shown last Saturday. Kurri Kurri also started their season in style with a hard fought win over South Newcastle at Kurri Kurri Sportsground. Trailing at half time the Bulldogs clawed their way back to grab a six point win. In the Macquarie v Lakes United match the 2017 defending premiers overcome a dogged Seagulls outfit missing a couple of key players to run out 28 to 12 victors.

The final game of round 1 pitted Western Suburbs against one of the competition favourites Central Newcastle. Over the past two seasons Central have recruited a number of Western Suburbs players, and former premiership winning coach, which generated significant interest in this clash. The result, according to many within the know, did not go to script with Western Suburbs proving too slick for the Butcher Boys. While there is little doubt that Central will improve the 14 point win confirms that the Rosellas will again be a force in 2018.

Round 2 Business Plaza Cup fixtures kick-off with Cessnock hosting Kurri Kurri on Saturday at Cessnock Sportsground .This clash holds plenty of history for both clubs and is more often than not a closely fought and physical encounter. The remaining matches will all be played on Sunday with Lakes United at home against Western Suburbs, Central Newcastle v Macquarie at St John Oval, and Maitland travelling to Townson Oval to take on South Newcastle. Coincidently all round 1 winning teams are up against teams that tasted defeat last week.

The BarTV match-of-the-round is the Central Newcastle v Macquarie fixture and can be viewed via our website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au) or Facebook page (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League). The Butcher Boys will be out to bounce back from their round 1 loss to the Rosellas and should expect a strong challenge from the Macquarie Scorpions.

Adding extra importance to this weekend?s matches will be selection of the Senior Rebels and Emerging Rebels representative squads on Sunday night. Competition for spots will be high and team results over the first two rounds will have an impact on individual selections.

JTHANGS UPTHEWHISTLE The '300 match club' in any sport is one with few members. First grade referee John Taylor belongs in that club, having refereed 338 Newcastle Rugby League first grade matches....at last weekends match between Maitland and Cessnock was his final one.

John began his career as a rugby league referee in 1995. His first year saw him referee consistently throughout the year in schoolboy football and was given control of the Under 12?s Grand Final.

John?s senior rugby league career started in 1997, after officiating in the lower grades of Under 20?s and Reserve Grade for the next few seasons, John was given the opportunity to referee first grade in August of 1999. This game was Central Newcastle at home taking on Kurri Kurri.

From the year 2000 and onwards, John remained stapled in first grade throughout each season. In 2002, he was awarded with his debut in a first grade grand final as a referee. Since this game, he has officiated first grade grand finals in 2004, 2008, 2013, 2014 & 2015. John was also fortunate enough to be a part of the NRL Telstra Premiership squad from 2002 to 2004 officiating in 43 NRL matches as a touch judge.

To add to John?s list of achievements during this time period were representative fixtures. He was given the duties of officiating in the Country Rugby League Open Division Representative grand finals in 2004 & 2008, and during the 2012 rugby league season he was selected as a representative referee to travel as a part of the CRL Samoa Tour.

With great contribution on the field, John was also able to match these feats off the field. He became a life member of the Newcastle Referees Association in 2006, held numerous positions on the board of management including Director of Coaching and Development, received multiple honours of the annual Referee?s Referee award, and in 2017 was awarded with life membership into the Newcastle Rugby League.

Saturday 22nd of April 2018 saw an end of a chapter in John?s career as a referee. The game was Maitland vs Cessnock and was John?s last as a first grade referee in the Newcastle Rugby League. SOUTH NEWCASTLE LIONS Last week saw the Lions go down in a tightly fought first grade match against the Kurri Bulldogs.

After a tough first round, we are excited to be at home for the first time in 2018 when we take on Maitland at Townson Oval this Sunday.

Congratulations to our ladies league tag and reserve grade teams that recorded strong wins last weekend and will be out for back to back wins on Sunday. Our under 19s and open grade team will be out to avenge their first round defeats.

KURRI KURRI BULLDOGS After a great summer training and working hard the Kurri faithful were looking forward to round one of the competition, the crowd arrived early to watch the LLT get our season underway. The ladies showed glimpses of great work they had been doing throughout the summer, however they were beaten by a well drilled South Newcastle team. The next game was a see sawing affair early on with the game in the balance at halftime.

After clear and concise instructions from the coach at the break the Bulldogs were able to stick to what the coached had asked and were too strong in the end.

Age shall not weary them, with an average age of 42 for the winger ?s one would have thought they would be leading the charge in the shed on old boys day not leading the charge on the field. The third grade have had a physical summer working hard with great attendance. The hard work paid off as they came up with a rampant display led by Michael Hugg who had an abundance of support from his teammates. Reserve grade were beaten comprehensively by a strong South Newcastle side, after a tumultuous week of player movement with the club things didn?t get any easier on game day for coach Leggett with his starting halfback pulling out due to illness. Things went from bad to worse for reserves with the referee certainly looked to stamp his authority on this game with Kurri on the wrong end of the count. Look for the reserves to put in a spirited performance this weekend against local rival the goannas.

First grade saw the crowd at fever pitch, the arrival of the new recruits and importantly the retention of the 2017 players has an expectation of better performances in 2018. And game one didn?t disappoint with glimpses from all players of what we can expect this season, Led by Zeb Dunstan and Jade Porter. The Bulldogs had ascendancy for periods of the game however were not ever in front on the score board until the final stages when Tom McKenzie crossed for the match winner. Congratulations to first grade on the win a tough hard fought affair and a great starting point for season 2018.

The talent is there with this side but they really do need to minimise mistakes and control the ball to give themselves every opportunity to win games. Player Auction Points went to Jack Cameron 3, Riley Brady 2 and Floyd Bonar 1 point.

It was indeed very pleasing to see the Open Grade side keeping their try line intact and coming away with a well earned 26-0 win. The defence was really strong and when the Scorpions had a chance to score they took it. Players Auction points went to Graham Morris 3, Doug Beale 2, and Pat Sharkey 1 point.

The Reserve Grade demonstrated just what a force they will be in the competition in 2018 coming away with a 30-8 win. Although the score line would indicate an easy win this was not the case with the Scorpions side having to play some very good football to come away with the win. Best for the Scorpions were Adam Grew 3, Aaron Simon 2, and Matt Geoffrey 1 point. A special mention must also go to Jack Cameron who was very strong for the Scorpions after earlier playing in the Under 19s game.

To finish off the day and put the icing on the cake the Scorpions First Grade side came away with a strong 28-12 win after leading 14-4 at the halftime break. The task was made more difficult for the Scorpions after losing hooker Kelly Benson with a strained ankle very early in the game. It was pleasing to see the way in which all the new players fitted into the Scorpions side with Kyle Smith and Kyle Eather having standout debuts. Player Auction points went to Kyle Smith 3, Kyle Eather 1 point and Jordan Noble 1 point.

This week we are away to Central in what should be very hard fought games, particularly in first grade after the Butcher Boys lost their first round encounter against Western Suburbs.

Finally after a long preseason without Cahill oval we are back at our spiritual home, and there is no better game to welcome the boys back then being up against West.

Last week against Macquarie was always going to be tough start to the year. Our 19?s lead the way and got off the mark with an impressive 28-10 win, 3rds never gave up and even though the results was a 26-0, there is plenty for Coach Craig Martine to work with. Reserves went down 30-8. In a hard fought match that was in the balance until the last 10 mins first grade went down 28-12. While Todd was pleased with the effort, he has asked the playing group to be more disciplined around the basics of the game.

Hosting the Western Suburbs club is always a season highlight for the Belmont community. The Rosella` s are one of only two current NRL club` s who Lakes do not have a positive record against. Almost 12 years to the day on April 30, 2006 Ian Bourke` s side defeated West 34-10 in a round 8 clash at Harker Oval that pushed the Rosella` s back to 7th on the ladder. More recently West have won the last four encounters with the Seagull` s last victory on home soil occurring on May 24, 2015 when Chris Adams led Lakes to a 26-18 win after being behind 10-18 at halftime. A try to Tim Harlow started the comeback and Honeti Tuha` s second try sealed the result late in the game. History tells us West lift at Cahill Oval ? winning on 37 occasions. Like it has been since 1947 today` s clash will be eventful.
