CEO REPORT Matt Harris, CEO Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League The unpredictability of the 2017 Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League competition was again highlighted last weekend with Central Newcastle’s upset win over front-runners Western Suburbs. The injury depleted Butcher Boys proved too strong for a Rosellas outfit that had only dropped one game all season and were looking for their ninth win in a row. An important win for Central in that it puts them in the box seat for an all-important top 3 position.

In the remaining round 13 Business Plaza Cup matches Macquarie turned in a powerful second half to defeat Cessnock 44 to 16, South Newcastle overcome Kurri Kurri by 10 in a high scoring fixture while Lakes United maintained fourth position with a 38 – 26 home win against Maitland.

In this weekend’s Saturday games Maitland host Macquarie and Western Suburbs travel to Cessnock Sportsground to take on the Goannas. On Sunday Central Newcastle are at home against Kurri Kurri and at Cahill Oval Lakes United battle South Newcastle. With only three games left before the finals series every match has significance on the top five placings. The Lakes United v South Newcastle game will be the BarTV Feature Match and can be viewed via our website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au).

Round 14 is also the second of the Futures Rounds. This initiative has Tooheys Newcastle RL joining forces with the Newcastle Knights to promote the future stars of rugby league.

An u19 player from each club will be selected to trial for the Knights 2018 u20 side joining the eight players selected from the first Futures Round. All four u19 games will be played as curtain raisers to the Business Plaza Cup matches. Thankyou to the Knights for their support and best of luck to all u19 players.

CELEBRATING OUR FUTURE Danielle Ries, Communications Intern Round 14 is the second instalment of Futures Round, where the Under 19 teams are put into the spotlight. This initiative is the perfect opportunity to recognize all the skill and talent that younger players possess.

In a unique partnership with the Newcastle Knights, the player deemed “Best on Ground” from each of the 8 teams during the highlighted Futures Round, will be given the opportunity to trial for the Under 20s Newcastle Knights team for 2018. Overall, 16 players over the 2 Futures Round will be given the chance to show off and improve their skills by gaining the valuable experience of trialling for the Knights Under 20s.

Newcastle Knights Elite Pathway Recruitment Manager Troy Pezet says “It’s a good initiative from the Newcastle Rugby League and the Knights to identify any kids getting ready to play under 20s or to get into our senior ranks next year”.

Even the players acknowledge what a great opportunity Futures Round is, with Central Newcastle’s Kyle Kingston saying the initiative is “a great thing the League has done. To give the players a sniff of hope, a pathway to be able to get a trial”.

Speaking to a few boys playing in Futures Round, they were very eager to get out there and take the field. Lakes United Aaron McGrady expresses “it’s a good opportunity for the boys to showcase what they’ve got”.

Futures Round is a pivotal part in keeping grassroots rugby league strong in the Newcas tle area, as it highlights all the potential young players have and what they can bring to the game to make sure rugby league goes from strength to strength.

As part of futures round, the Under 19s game will be played before first grade as it helps to further promote the future of league. Maitland’s Bayley Ritchie is pumped about playing before the big boys, saying “It should be good, a much bigger crowd than we usually get.

Hopefully that means people will see us play and come for future rounds”.

Although, you can never really tell where any game is heading in the future, if one thing is for certain, the future of rugby league looks bright with these young guys spearheading the charge.

CESSNOCK First Grade now have it all to play for following last weeks disappointing second half vs Macquarie with the Scorps running away with the win scoring 28 unanswered points.

Today's game somewhat shapes our season.

Reserve Grade had a terrific 22-8 win, another collective team performance with strong displays from Stevens, L Edwards and See with special mention to Bendiech and Workman backing up from the U19s.

U19s won a 20 minute each way shootout 30-14. An impressive display which gets them back in the winners circle continuing their charge to September.

LLT narrowly went down 12-10 in a game that both teams were desperate for the win.

This week the CRLFC would like to congratulate Brett Stevens and Sam Wilson on their 200th and 100th CRLFC Grade game respectively. A terrific achievement to both and for Brett he as he now gains his CRLFC Life Membership.

KURRI KURRI Another disappointing day with all grades going down. In a high scoring game, first grade going down 44-34. After jumping out to a good start scoring the first try and leading 6-0, then injuries to Kade Hardy (compound fractured finger) and Mark Walker, saw a reshuffle with our starting two second rowers playing centre and wing. Souths rushed out to lead 22-6 fought back by half time to be down 28-22. On resumption and the dogs reached the lead with 15 minutes to go 34-32, before 2 late tries allowed Souths to win 44-34.

Again we had 2 players make the first grade debut Jack Riddett and Jackson Cluff, making it 11 for the year.

All the lower grades went down heavily.

Much appreciation must go to Bec Campton and Angie Peterkin for the efforts in staging Ladies Day with over 120 ladies attending the day. Much needed funds went to Carrie’s Place in Maitland. The day turned into night and with the music starting there were a number of dancing efforts that were highlights of the night.

It took 13 rounds but finally all four teams won on the same day. Our LLT, U/19s & Reserve grade pleased their coaches “Mouse”, “Payne Train” and “Shep” with outstanding defensive efforts which contributed greatly to their wins. The strength of the 2017 Newcastle RL was illustrated by the Maitland First grade side playing some very good football to lead during the match. Well done to our own First grade men who stuck together and applied themselves to win well in the end.

With 3 matches left in the regular season two are at home so given good form, intelligent play and a slice of fortune our coaching staff will be preparing all teams for semi-final football.

Today South Newcastle are again our opposition and going on our most recent encounter First grade will need to play smart, consistent rugby league if the valuable competition points are to be won. Currently our First grade record against the famous Lions stands at 101 wins, 49 losses and 2 draws.

Our Membership draw was not won at our last home game therefore will jackpot to $700 today.

MACQUARIE The Macquarie Scorpions got back into the groove last weekend against Cessnock coming away with an emphatic 44-16 win after the sides were locked 16 -16 at halftime.

It was a very impressive display by the Scorpions in the second half with stand in half Randall Briggs being very impressive throughout the game. With three games remaining the Scorpions are two wins in front of third placed Central so it is essential that the Scorpions continue to win at least two of the last few games.

Unfortunately both the Reserve Grade and Under 19s both went down and also need to finish the year strongly to ensure they secure a semi final spot.

What a day for the Scorpions Ladies League Tag side coming away with a 12-10 win over Cessnock after being down 10-0 at halftime and their first win of the season.

Unfortunately the game had to be cut short due to a possible serious injury to a Cessnock player and everyone at the Scorpions wish Bella a speedy recovery.

This weekend Adam Swadling racks up 100 first grade games for the Scorpions and a special presentation will be made to Adam at the Scorpions last home game against Kurri on the 26 August. Congratulations Adam from everyone associated with the Scorpions.

SOUTH NEWCASTLE It was a successful day for the 'Lions' at Kurri last Saturday with wins in the four games played.

The Ladies TAG set the tone for the day with a good 30-0 win, cementing their place in the top half of the premiership ladder.

The Under 19s were able to field a full side for the first time in many weeks and came away with a much needed 52-24 win, which keeps them in the running for a semi-final berth.

The Reserve Grade maintained their top spot on the ladder with a very impressive 42-0 win, highlighted by a three try haul from the very busy James Livock.

The First Grade flew out of the gates and led Kurri 22-6 midway through the first half but some worrying defence lapses allowed the “Bulldogs” to gain the lead 34-32 in the 21st minute of the second half – fortunately South put on two late trys and won the game 44-34. It still remains a tough task to make the semis, but the coach, Ben Cross believes he has the team to do it.

Good luck against the Lakes “Seagulls” today.

WESTERN SUBURBS Rugby league fans who enjoy watching a quality game be at Harker Oval on Sunday the 20th of August, as Wests take on the premiers Souths. This is our last home game & it is the Wests Old Boys Day. All former players & officials are urged to attend & support our players in their endeavour to take out the Minor Premiership.

LLT our players put up a good effort against competition leaders Central last Sunday. Halftime score was 4-12 against us. In the second-half our players were leading 14-12 with only minutes to go. Central crossed our line and we went down 14 to 16. A great effort. Tries: K Houghton, R Curtin, J Dudgeon.

Reserve Grade played their best game all season and it was such a joy to watch. They could have taken on any First-Grade team. A great effort by all players.
