ROUND 11 CEO REPORT Matt Harris, CEO—Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League Due to closure of Townson and Harker Ovals only two games were played in round 10 of the Business Plaza Cup. On Saturday 2nd place Macquarie travelled to Coronation Oval to take on a Maitland Pickers side desperate for a win. The 11th hour inclusion of former English Super League player Curtis Naughton added some fire power to the home side resulting in an extremely competitive contest. Despite taking an 18 to 10 lead into the break the Pickers couldn’t hold on to the lead with the Scorps running out 26 – 24 winners.

Sunday’s feature match saw Lakes United clinch an important 12 point win over rivals Central Newcastle. The Seagulls jumped to an early 18 point lead only to see the gap reduced to one converted try mid-way through the second half. A late try sealed the win for the home club leaving them only one win outside an all-important top 3 position.

This week’s Tooheys Newcastle RL action has Kurri Kurri hosting Cessnock, Lakes United up against competition leaders Western Suburbs, Macquarie v South Newcastle, and Maitland travelling to St John Oval to take on Central Newcastle.

Another unpredictable season makes picking a winner difficult which contributes to an exciting competition. The coalfields clash between the Bulldogs and the Goannas is always a physical match-up while the return of captain Chris Adams should see Lakes United challenge front runners Western Suburbs. Defending premiers Souths have hit some form and are coming off 3 consecutive wins while Maitland on their day are capable of beating any side. All bodes well for a great weekend of football.

KURRI KURRI The Bulldogs return to Sylvester Real Estate Sportsground with their semi final chances on the line against arch rivals Cessnock. Defeat would see us four points behind them and Souths.

Coming off a strong effort despite being defeated by Central 18-8, with the score at 14-8 for long period in the second half. The Dogs lost three players in the lead up and three more during the game. It saw the first grade debuts off Brock Hollis selected, Jordy Mitchell after 45 minutes in under 19s and Jacob Lollback after a full game in reserve grade. Best efforts by Terrence Seu Seu, Ben Wyborn and Mick Steele.

Reserve grade went down 32-12 after leading 12-10 at half time, with late tries blowing the score out.Strong games by Justin Peterkin and Damien Walters. Under 19s went down 24-16, after leading 16-14 with less than 10 to go. The boys are wholehearted in their efforts and only a couple of errors at critical are costing them. Strong efforts by Zac Watkins, Callum Nugent and Bailey Pride.

The LLT went down 22-4 after their usual poor start allowing Central early tries to lead 18-0 at half time. In the second half as has been usual they matched Central 4-4. The coach has spoken about harder warm ups to liven the girls up for the first half. A blistering try by Elyse Stoker was our points.

A reminder that our Sportspersons dinner with Legendary Kiwi captain, NRL and Super league star Tawera Nikau. Tawera has suffered some serious injuries in his career and also losing a leg in a motor bike accident . It has not stopped competing in Boston Marathons and other events and recognised as a true motivational speaker on the international speaking circuit.

LAKES UNITED Tremendous effort by our players last week who obviously enjoyed playing on home turf again. MACQUARIE This weekend the Scorpions take on South Newcastle in a game to highlight the “Lets Tackle Domestic Violence” Program and proceeds from the day will go towards the Westlake’s Women’s Refuge. The Scorpettes are still to find their first win but showing great improvement going in at half time down 12 – 6 against Maitland. Keep working hard ladies.

The 19s are starting to come to grips with the grade intensity and requirements and playing some very good football defeating 3rd place Maitland 28 - 16.

Unfortunately the Reserve Grade side suffered another loss, but are still well placed on the competition ladder and are sure to try and put last disappointment behind them and come out firing this weekend against Souths.

Scorpions won their first grade game 26-24 against Maitland last weekend, and sit 2nd on the ladder behind West with a game in hand which will be played Sunday July 16.

MAITLAND The boys gave 100% effort in our match against 2nd position Macquarie however we were unable to come away with the points, going down to strong finishing opposition by 2 points. Heartbreaking for the effort and no result. We will be looking to turn this around when we next meet them in the last match of the season. Well Done to Reserve Grade and our LLT team both having good wins. Great to see the excitement from the Ladies team who put in the effort week in and week out. Our 19s hit a small hurdle resulting in the Scorps taking the spoils.

All teams are going into this weeks away match at Central confident and ready to redeem or continue good form.

CONGRATULATIONS TO JACOB SINCLAIR for his service at the Pickers. Jacob has now played over 100 grade games and this weekend sees his 100th 1st grade game.

Jacob is a Morpeth Junior and has played with the club since 2009, with a small break overseas in his career. Jacob featured in our 2010 and 2011 Premiership sides. He is our Club Captain and leads by example on and off the field. Well done!

SOUTH NEWCASTLE Unfortunately last week’s game against Cessnock was called off due to the state of the ground. The fixture has been transferred to the spare weekend in August.

Hopefully the ground will be available for our deferred game against Macquarie next Sunday and our Round 12 clash with Lakes the Sunday after.

Early indications predict that this year’s “Sleapy’s Day” on the Saturday 26th August will be our biggest ever. This annual event is held to raise money to help in the fight against cancer – more details in later editions of this programme.

Wests Under 19s in the first half our team showed what a big improvement they were from the start of this season, going into the shed at half time 12 to the unbeaten Cessnock side 16. However, in the second half Cessnock showed what a good team they are, with the final score being 18 to 32. Wests First Grade came up against a very inform Cessnock team who lead 4 to 10 at half time.
