Welcome to round 1 of the 2019 Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League competition. After a long and hot pre-season I have no doubt that the players, clubs and supporters are looking forward to the season kicking off and the opportunity to gauge how their team is shaping up. 2018 was undoubtedly the closest competition in recent years and early indications suggest that this season will again be extremely competitive.

2019 also marks the second season of our affiliation with NSWRL. A relationship that has provided additional resources to our competitions both on and off the field such as game day doctors, ground managers and HIA officials, Hudl video review system, a centralised judiciary system, referee support, and improved representative pathways. This year NSWRL will also provide interchange officials, additional referee support, plus the introduction of the Statedge software system. Newcastle RL will continue to work with NSWRL to identify, develop and implement strategies that maximise the opportunities that exist within the game of rugby league in our region.

Round 1 will kick-off on Saturday with Cessnock and Kurri Kurri both at home against Maitland and Macquarie respectively. The Goannas see the return of former coach Todd Edwards plus the addition of some new faces on their roster and will be looking to challenge for the title after a number of lean campaigns. Their opponents, the Maitland Pickers, were frontrunners last year and will be aiming to set a similar pace in 2019.

The Ron Griffiths coached Bulldogs proved to be the surprise packet last season falling just one game short of the grand final. Always hard to beat at home they will face a Scorpions outfit keen to forget about a disappointing 2018. Expect both games to be tight physical tussles.

On Sunday Lakes United host West Newcastle at Cahill Oval. While Lakes have lost a number of players from the team that played in last year ?s grand final the Rosellas have assembled an extremely strong and highly credentialed squad. It will be a battle of youth vs experience. The final match, and this week?s BarTV match-of-the-round, is Central Newcastle up against 2018 premiers South Newcastle at St John Oval. In additional to a number of playing roster changes both clubs have new coaches in the experienced Phil Williams and former NRL player Andrew Ryan. BarTV will be streaming this game from 3pm and can be viewed via our website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au) or Facebook page (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League).

The 2019 Tooheys Newcastle RL competition also signifies the rebranding of the ladies league tag competition to the Monarch ladies blues tag. This change has come about as a direct result of NSWRL?s introduction of the blues tag format throughout all their member competitions. Monarch Paints have jumped on-board to support this initiative and we look forward to working with NSWRL to expand this format of the game. This season will also see the inclusion of a Nelson Bay Sharks team in the blues tag competition. We are extremely excited to welcome back a Sharks team and would like to thank the Sharks committee and their players for making this possible.

THEBAYIS BACK! After a hiatus of a few years the Bay is back in the District competition! The Nelson Bay Sharks will compete in the 2019 ladies BLues Tag competition under the tuteledge of coach Blaine O'Flaherty. The Sharks will play their home matches at the Salamander Bay sports fields - the same location as the Nelson Bay junior play.

Their home matches will kick off at 10am on Saturdays (except this weekend, where kick off will be 1.20pm).

With the inclusion of the Sharks this season will see a nine team, eightteen round Blues Tag competition. See the draw at the end of the program for all t he Blues Tag details

SOUTH NEWCASTLE LIONS This year will see South Newcastle RLFC compete in our 110th consecutive season the Newcastle Rugby League competition and we will go into as reigning premiers in First Grade and Open Grade. We are club with a proud history and are looking at a long future.

This year we have appointed highly decorated former Parramatta and Canterbury player Andrew ?Bobcat?

Ryan as our First Grade coach and we wish him well for his first really serious foray into the caching ranks.

Hopefully he can maintain his smile for the full year!

Andrew will be well attended by a support staff that includes Reserve Grade coach Matt Kennedy, Open Grade coach Steve Young and Under 19;s mentor Dan Carr. They will also be joined at training by our assistant coaches Joel McCafferty and Regan Tanner as well as input from such luminaries as Michael Hagan and Todd Lowrie.

Our Blues Tag team will be coached by Newcastle league legend Craig Higgins. It seems Craig got sick of his sons and daughters stealing all the limelight and he jumped at the chance to get back involved.

As always we are hopeful of a strong season in all grades and trust that all of our players achieve their potential and enjoy their time with our great club. We also wish all other clubs and their supporters all the best and hope that, whatever the outcomes on the paddock, rugby league is seen as the winner and that all rugby league people work together to see that our game continues to prosper.

M ACQUARIE SCORPIONS PATRON: M R COL BURNS: Well the Newcastle Rugby League season starts this weekend and I am sure that all the coaches, players and supporters across the 8 clubs are keen for the season to start after what appears to have been a long and hard off season. All the clubs would have worked very hard during that period to sign new players to their squads and to ensure that all their sponsors are on board along with the support staff.

A big welcome to all the new Macquarie Scorpion players and the supporters for the 2019 season in what should be another hard fought and competitive Newcastle Rugby League competition. It was a mixed bag for the Scorpions in 2018 with the First Grade taking out the wooden spoon after being premiers in 2017. The lower grades performed well with the Reserve Grade taking out the premiership and Open Grade and Under 19s making the grand final and major semi final. At the time of going to press it was still not clear whether the Scorpions would be able to field a ladies league tag side, but it has not been for the lack of trying.

I know that Head Coach Adam Bettridge and his coaching team have been very thorough in the pre season to ensure that the playing staff are ready to go today against Kurri Bulldogs. It is never easy going to Kurri and come away with the points, but if commitment and preparation counts for anything I am sure the Scorpions will do their supporters and the community proud again this weekend against Kurri and throughout the season.

2019 sees a change in first grade coach to a local premiership winner in Glenn Agland with Robbie Payne as his assistant and Craig Martine coming into the footy manager role. Lyndon Sheppard takes on the Reserve Grade coaching role with another local junior in Kris Sheppard taking on the Captain Coach role for Opens.

John ?Princey? Prince takes on mentoring our 19?s squad, the majority of whom have come from the premiership winning 17?s side from last year, while Logan Redman again heads up our Blues Tag team in 2019.

We are extremely proud of having a playing list that is dominated by local juniors, this excites us as an Executive and we believe sets us up for a strong future ahead. We are very fortunate to have a history and a structure in place that invests in our local juniors and with the points and salary cap in place it is very important to continue to have a strong pipeline of local talent to provide opportunities to.

CODEOF CONDUCT SUMMARYOF OFFENCES NOTE: Clubs are responsible for the conduct of their players, parents/carers of the players, coaches, officials and club supporters No person(s) attending a match, function or event shall: (a) Use offensive or obscene language to any participant; (b) Enter the field of play during the course of a match without the prior approval of the ground manager appointed by the home club and/or Newcastle RL; (c) Excessively dispute the decision of a referee or touch judge either during or after a match; (d) Assult or act with aggression to any person(s); (e) Behave in a way contrary to the code of conduct and/or the spirit of the game; (f) Behave in a way which disturbs the enjoyment of a match, function or event by any other person(s), or brings discredit to the home club and/or Newcastle RL; (g) Act in such a way as to exhibit racial intolerance, by language or other conduct, to any person(s); (h) Refuse to accept the reasonable direction of the ground manager, official of the team/club which that person is supporting, or official of the home club and/or Newcastle RL, Breaches of the rugby league code of conduct may result in penalties, including but not limited to: · Suspension of a match and/or · Termination of a match (including potential forfeiture of competition points) and/or · Monetary fines and/or · Suspension of a participant on a temporary or permanent basis and/or · Suspension of a club, League or Association on a temporary or permanent basis.
