November 2023

Dear Friends,

Thanksgiving is upon us! During this month of Thanksgiving, we would like to recognize the Board of Directors of the Newark Senior Center. Not only the current Board, but the individuals who have given of their time, talent, and expertise for more than 50 years to guide this organization. Over the years, these individuals have guided the NSC through many phases. In the early years, the Center served as a social hub for the aging residents of Newark. As times changed, the NSC began to provide essential services like a noontime meal and Meals on Wheels as well as Social Services to help individuals navigate aging in community. It became clear, after serving the community for about 30 years, that a new facility should be considered. The home of the NSC today, serving those who are 50+, is a result of individuals throughout the community who came together to make this facility a reality. Although it was built in 1996, their forethought, planning and vision created a Center of which we are all still very proud of today. As time progressed, the Center and programming have expanded to serve the ever- changing needs of our community. The NSC is still the first and only nationally accredited senior center in the State. Clearly the Center offers a very wide range of programs and services including our newest program, Meeting of Minds. I know I speak on behalf of the Board, that we are all very proud of the Center that we have become under the guidance of so many for more than 50 years.

This is a time for giving thanks, for living with gratitude. But for many who are wonderful supporters of this organization in the form of time, talent, and treasure, it is also my hope that this spirit of giving brings a sincere sense of joy. The ability to give – no matter the form – is truly a gift. I thank the Board, our volunteers, staff and members for the role you play in making the NSC what it is today. Enjoy this season of thanks and giving.

If a NSC program or club would like a table at the NSC Open House scheduled for Friday, December 15th, please contact Heather Mitchell (302)737-2336x127 or hmitchell@newarkseniorcenter.com Health Insurance Caution Please ask all medical providers if they accept your insurance – private insurance or Medicare, and if all costs of your care will be covered under insurance. They may ask for your insurance information but that is not a guarantee that your procedure/ treatment will be fully covered. Please see page 42 for more information.

Kate's Fitness Korner by Kate Boettger, NSC Fitness Center Manager

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or most commonly referred to as COPD, is a lung disease that makes it harder for people to breathe and November is the month to bring awareness to this common disease. COPD is the third leading cause of death in America, and it is estimated that about 15 million people have the disease and several million others are living without an official COPD diagnosis. Living without a COPD diagnosis is extremely bad for your health, as it permanently damages your airways and air space. This damage causes your lungs to lose their elasticity, makes it harder for them to return to their shape after each breath, and become swollen or blocked by increased mucus. The leading cause of COPD in people over 40 includes smoking regularly (currently or in the past), have had exposure to lung irritants like chemicals and dust, and various genetic conditions. If you start to notice that you are starting to cough more than usual with mucus, shortness of breath when doing everyday tasks, have frequent respiratory infections and not able to take deep breaths, it may be smart to talk to your doctor about possible solutions to combat the damage already done to the lungs. The sooner you take the steps towards a COPD diagnosis, the better you’ll be able to breathe!

NEWARK SENIOR CENTER BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Newark Senior Center is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors that meets monthly from September through June. The official duties of the Board include fiduciary responsibilities, oversight, a duty of loyalty and a duty of care, and play a critical role in policy and planning. In recent years, the Board of Directors have become more involved and can often be seen around the Center as participants and as volunteers. Currently board members volunteer to pack and deliver Meals on Wheels, welcome people at the Reception Desk, assist at special events and lead different activities. Their involvement helps to provide valuable insight into the operations of the Center as well as the function of staff and volunteers. Additionally, these experiences allow them to see for themselves the impact the Center has on the lives of members. Each year the board of directors are asked to contribute to the annual appeal just like the rest of our community. We are happy to report that each year we receive 100% participation from them in that effort. Several of our current and past board members are part of our Sustaining Giver program that donate to the Center on a monthly basis. The Newark Senior Center is fortunate to have such talented and dedicated individuals serving the Center. Thank you to all current and past board members for their commitments to the Center.
