Reinvent your destiny
“Take every opportunity to branch out and try new things – and always accept any work experience you are offered.”
From aspiring artist to business manager, Natalie found her calling at New City College.
Natalie became the Deputy Centre Manager of Romford’s popular indoor shopping mall, the Mercury Shopping Centre, having been an Art & Design student at New City College’s Ardleigh Green campus.
“I found my calling when I was at college and I truly found my independence. Up to this point I had followed the average
academic path through GCSEs and A Levels, but going to college as an adult student was a very different place that gave me passion for what I was doing and taught me that.”
She added: “I realised that despite being very good at art and painting, I didn’t necessarily want to be an artist or a painter, but I had that lightbulb moment when I decided that I definitely wanted creativity to be part of my life.”
“Between myself and the centre manager, we manage everything from HR to finance, customer service to marketing, onsite engineering and public relations to tenant business support. No two days are the same and the job can be as satisfying as you make it.”

“I enjoy the fact that I can immediately utilise the skills and knowledge I’ve learned at college and transfer them to the workplace.”
Take control of your future
From agency labourer to mastic asphalter, Thomas found his calling at New City College.
New City College Hackney is the national centre for mastic asphalt education and training.
Thomas, who works for Brindley Asphalt Roofing, attends New City College on a block release basis, travelling from Birmingham and attending the college in blocks of two to three weeks at a time. When Thomas isn’t at college, he works on-site.
Thomas entered the profession by chance, as he was working as a labourer for an agency.
Speaking about his career, Thomas said: “I ended up in the mastic asphalt sector by chance and it really opened my eyes to what the industry can offer. Every day is different and brings a new challenge; there are always new things to learn and opportunities to broaden my skills set. I enjoy the fact that I can immediately utilise the skills and knowledge I’ve learned at college and transfer them to the workplace.
I would recommend the mastic asphalt sector as a great industry for anyone who enjoys a challenge, working outdoors, and the opportunity to progress to a well-paid career.”

“I had always wanted to teach but I also wanted to do something in the medical professions.”
Reinvent your destiny
From paramedic to teacher, Mij found his calling at New City College.
Mij enrolled at New City College Ardleigh Green on the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PCET) course and hasn’t looked back.
After completing his Nursing qualification, he started work for the Ambulance Service in Ilford, based in the busy call centre, dealing with emergencies, consultations and dispatch.
Mij soon realised that whenever there was the chance to train new recruits, he would be the first volunteer. He found he loved to teach, passing on paramedic and nursing skills.
Mij became involved in the Ambulance Service’s in-house training and then decided to take the PCET (formerly known as the PGCE) qualification to enable him to develop his teaching role.
He said: “Achieving the teaching qualification was tough and quite intense because I was working as a Paramedic and studying at the same time. But I am so glad I did it! It was good fun because of the other people and the tutors on the course. They get you through any hard times and it is worth it in the end. I’d recommend it to anyone.”

Apprentice at SSE, a leading generator of renewable electricity and one of the largest electricity network companies in the UK.
From student to electrical engineer, Henry found his calling at New City College.
Henry was a Controls and Instrumentation apprentice. His new job helped him gain confidence and overcome a stammer.
“Applying for an apprenticeship at SSE made sense. It meant I could study, learn and earn money through working.
It seemed like a much better option than trying to get a part-time job while
studying. I had been applying for all sorts of jobs and never got an interview, or a call back.
I was pleased but nervous when SSE offered me an interview. I was a bit stressed and stammered at the start, but the interviewer, who is now my manager, was able to put me at ease. He told me that he also had a stammer as a kid and shared some techniques with me to help with the interview.
I was really surprised to get a call saying I had been successful and had the job! It has been going very well since I started. I am enjoying the work and I am gaining qualifications, so I have options for the future too.”

“I would recommend this college to anyone who may want a smaller or quieter learning environment compared to a larger university as tutors have more time to help you though your assignments. I have also found it beneficial not having to move away from home in order to study my degree course, which has been less stressful.”

you love, an evening class changed Carlo’s life.
Carlo had always relied on expensive garages to repair and service his beloved motorbike but after enrolling on New City College’s Motorcycle Maintenance evening class course, he now does it for free himself.
“I’d highly recommend taking up an evening course. It’s been great for my wellbeing and brought variety to my life. I’ve been out of school for a long time
but going back to college and learning a new skill has been pretty life-changing for me.” Carlo enrolled after hearing about the course from friends and researching online.
He said: “I’ve been riding motorcycles for a long time but I’ve always had to rely on other people to do the maintenance and trouble-shooting. Now I’m learning to do that myself, which is a great feeling.

“We can actually bring in our own bikes and work on them, so it’s really beneficial. We spend about 20% of the time on the theory and the rest working on our motorbikes in the workshop, so it’s quite cool to be able to apply straightaway the new skills we’ve learnt and use them to fix our own bikes.”
