Editor’s Letter It looks as though positive thinking has only got me so far. I swore I wouldn’t be bound to winter bugs this year but my mission has so far failed! As soon as the cold snap hit that was me, bam – in bed with chicken soup, sneezing, coughing and feeling awfully sorry for myself. I suppose I should thank my luck stars I haven’t been stung with man flu! Thankfully I seem to be immune to that strand of flu, but there have been a few male victims at the Nevaeh office and it doesn’t look like much fun. Being brutally attacked by the dreaded winter lugi, inspired me and the rest of the team at Nevaeh to focus this issue on all things health, in hopes to ward off and prevent all those nasty winter bugs. This month we take a look at total wellbeing, natural healing and a challenge that will battle the bulge (let’s be honest, we are all prone to a bit of extra padding around the cooler months). As always, we have jam packed this issue with all your monthly favourites, including a new feature that could help you contact a loved one from the other side. Introducing Andy Pentecost, our new resident Medium. If there’s someone you want to reach, email your question to info@nevaeh.net.nz and Andy could be helping you make contact. I hope you enjoy the August issue of Nevaeh as much as we loved bringing it to you. Happy Reading! Lou Parker xxx

Wearable

Creationz

Celebrating 10 years!

The annual event that is sure to turn heads everywhere is back again in what will prove to be Wearable Creationz’s biggest and best year yet.

Celebrating 10 years, Wearable Creationz will showcase it’s largest show to date with an all new format, draw dropping production, entertainment to surprise and best of all, a whopping 76 entrants from across the Bay of Plenty, Waikato and North Island, with 11 schools involved in the occasion. It’s hard to believe that the event which has empowered hundreds of youth and nurtured so much creativity and confidence has been around for 10 years. When a group of South African orphans and musicians were left stranded in New Zealand after a preforming programme went wrong, Rotorua local event enthusiasts Terry Wheeler and Barbara Cook decided to hold and art inspired fashion show. They had no idea that it would result in one of the country’s most fabulous creative stage shows.

“300 people turned up and we thought, this is something we can really run with,” said Mrs Cook, Chairperson of the Rotorua Creative Art Trust.

organising their own music, writing the story, creating the wearable creation and organising and implementing how it will be showcased.

“Every year has had so much growth. It just keeps getting better,” Mrs Cook said of the show, which is held across August 16, 17 and 18 at Rotorua’s Energy Events Centre.

“Entrants are judged on a range of different aspects including creativity, colour, movement, how the creation is built and stage presentation.”

With this year’s event increased to 3000 seats per show, board of directors on the Rotorua Creative Art Trust - Barbara Cook, Terry Wheeler, Nick Dallimore, Mijo Katavic and Elizabeth Cochrane, have truly outdone themselves. Mr Wheeler, who is on the judging panel said Wearable Creationz is all about the youth. “The talent is mind-blowing,” said Mr Wheeler, explaining that students do everything from submitting a design board,

The event has become a vehicle to showcase the talent of our young people, giving them a creative voice while wowing audiences by the thousands. “It’s a truly fantastic night out; you would be missing out if you didn’t come along.” By Lou Parker To find out more information on Wearable Creationz or to book tickets go to www.wearablecreationz.co.nz

BATTLE OF THE BULGE Nevaeh reader, Alison King and Rotorua’s More FM Breakfast announcer, Andy George are about to embark on the weight loss journey of a life time. Over the course of the next three months Alison and Andy will be left to their own devices to shift the extra pounds and get their health back on track.

Nothing is off limits. The pair can do whatever they like to lose the weight, but there is one condition….they have to diarise their journey for the world to read. The good, the bad and the ugly. The highs and lows, the gains and losses will all be recorded in the next three issues of Nevaeh.

We will be able to experience their journey every step of the way, and who knows maybe even learn something ourselves! Nevaeh’s resident personal trainer, Paul Chattell put Alison and Andy through a range of tests to see exactly where their fitness is at.

13

Profile:

Alison King Age: 35 Weight: 94.4KG Height: 165CM Resting Heart Rate: 85BPM Blood Pressure: 110/80 Push Test: Average: 45kg Max: 48kg Percentage Body Weight: 48% Leg Press Test: Average: 105kg Max: 110kg Percentage Body Weight: 111% Pull Test: Average: 45kg Max: 48kg Percentage Body Weight: 48% Bike Test: Resting Heart Rate: 85bpm Target Heart Rate: 130bpm Time Watts Heart Rate 1 Min 50 116 2 Mins 50 116 3 Mins 100 131 4 Mins 150 149 5 Mins 150 161 Recovery: at 1 Mins 50 141 At 2 Mins 50 128 Measurements: R Arm – 35cm L Arm – 35cm Waist – 105cm Hips – 122cm R Thigh – 64cm L Thigh – 64cm

14

Analysis: Alison has been a triathlete in the past but has not really exercised since giving birth. Alison’s BP is good. Her resting heart rate is a little high, probably due to the stress of having her baby at the test. Her fitness test showed that her cardio fitness needs work at all levels but especially at the higher end.

Alison’s power to weight ratio is poor for the upper body both pulling (48%) and pushing (48%). These should be up at 80% and above. Her leg strength (111%) is also low and needs work. This needs to be at 170% and above. All these figures can be improved with regular load bearing exercise and diet control.

Profile:

Andy George Age: 30 Weight: 110.8KG Height: 190CM Resting Heart Rate: 74BPM Blood Pressure: 130/90 Push Test: Average: 77kg Max: 80kg Percentage Body Weight: 69% Leg Press Test: Average: 161kg Max: 170kg Percentage Body Weight: 145% Pull Test: Average: 76kg Max: 84kg Percentage Body Weight: 68% Bike Test: Resting Heart Rate: 85bpm Target Heart Rate: 130bpm Time Watts Heart Rate 1 Min 50 95 2 Mins 50 101 3 Mins 100 114 4 Mins 150 126 5 Mins 200 144 6 Mins 250 167 7 Mins 250 174 Recovery: at 1 Mins 50 149 At 2 Mins 50 130 Measurements: R Arm – 36cm L Arm – 36cm Waist – 114cm Hips – 112cm R Thigh – 53cm L Thigh – 55cm

Analysis: Andy hasn’t exercised seriously in a while although he has ridden a MTB quite a lot in the past. Andy’s BP is a little high but not too bad. This would come down with a little exercise and some diet changes. Andy’s fitness is good at lower levels but suffers when put under pressure. This indicates that the cardio system is not stressed enough. Andy’s power to weight ratio is poor for the upper body both pulling (68%) and pushing (69%).

These should be up at 80% and above. His leg strength (145%) is better but needs to be improved. All these figures can be improved with regular load bearing exercise and diet control. One thing that really needs addressing is Andy’s hip to waist ratio. Having a waist measurement higher than the hip measurement is a bad sign. Too much body fat in this area can lead to potential heart problems.

YOUR WELLBEING With Maximum Wellbeing Welcome to the healthy world of Maximum Wellbeing. Maximum Wellbeing, operated by Gary Becks and Andy Pentecost, concentrates on all areas of healthy living.

Andy Pentecost and Gary Beck, Maximum Wellbeing.

Services include full naturopathic consultations, biofeedback analysis and treatments, detoxification programmes, weight loss programmes, organic personal care and various forms of healing. The following are some ideas to help steer you in the right direction so your health speaks a picture of total maximum wellbeing. something rather than nothing, especially if your body has a deficiency.

NUTRITION It’s time to go back to basics. In this day and age many of us are running around trying to fit a week’s worth of work in one day. We are more stressed and are relying on quick fix, processed foods to fuel us. Our living environment is more polluted than it’s ever been and combined with a poor diet; we are consuming more toxins and fewer nutrients. The way forward? Well, actually it may be better to go backwards in this case. Back to home grown, quality organic foods. Try and get to your local farmers market. The organic food sold there is usually a reasonable price.

16

SUPPLEMENTS Because the quality of our nutrition is so poor, supplements are a good option. There’s a lot of debate on the effectiveness of supplements, but like anything if it’s a good quality product it will do the trick. Use reputable organisations but at the same time if you’re on a low budget it is better to have

Alarming trends are showing people are lacking particularly in minerals which are the basic building blocks for our cells to function, Gary Beck said. “Vitamin B as well as Essential Fats are also what a lot of people commonly lack,” Mr Beck said. STRESS Consider these questions…. • Difficulty getting up in the morning? • Not fully awake till after 10am? • Need caffeine to get going?

• Low energy levels in the afternoon? • Better energy after 6pm until around 9pm? • Second wind from around 11pm -1am? • Snack on salty or sweet foods and caffeine to keep going? • Feeling run down? • Harder to bounce back from illnesses or other stresses? • Difficulty concentrating and thinking clearly? • Lower libido? • Poor sleep? • Sick more often? • Increased symptoms with allergies, PMS or menopause? If you said yes to six or more of those questions you may be suffering from stress and adrenal fatigue. Adrenal fatigue is produced when the output of adrenal hormones is diminished through over stimulation by severe or repeated stress, or because the adrenals are weakened by poor nutrition, congenital factors and other influences. These influences can include illness, physical stress such as surgery, injury and poor nutrition, emotional stress from unfavourable life situations and environmental stress from toxic chemicals and pollutants. If you think you might be suffering from adrenal fatigue contact your naturopath or family doctor.

ACHES AND PAINS FOR NO REASON? CLAY THERAPY / MUD PACKING Sometimes the body can go through trauma without us even being aware of it. Things like tattoos, vaccinations, falls, and even surgery can have an impact on our body, sometimes years after it’s happened. Incidences like this can cause what’s called – Physical Interference Fields by short-circuiting energy flow to organs and glands. The result of this can manifest into symptoms negatively impacting your overall health. Thankfully there is a solution. Therapeutic clays and ionised mineral packs are applied externally to the body. This restores the Physical Interference Field blockage and restores optimum cellular resonance. DOING ALL THE RIGHT THINGS BUT STILL NOT FEELING BETTER? EMOTIONAL REPOLARISATION TECHNIQUE Any physical disease or illness has an emotional aspect to it. This applies to everything from the common cold to cancer. Emotional trauma or negative thought patterns, whether you’re aware of it or not impede on an individual’s progress to restore health and vitality.

Identifying emotional patterns and clearing Emotional Interference Fields may be the key to unlocking the body’s innate healing capacity. Quantum Reflex Analysis No single body is the same. Each of us has different needs so we can function in optimal condition. QUANTUM REFLEX ANALYSIS (QRA) This is a great way to assess what your body is potentially lacking. A qualified QFA practitioner can assess organ and gland stress, chronic infections, detoxification, nutritional requirements, product quality (including efficacy and dose) and emotional or physical interference fields that may be inhibiting health. INTUITIVE LIFE COACHING Intuitive life coaching targets people who are ready to step into who they really are says Natural Healer Andy Pentecost.

“People naturally feel better when they talk about things,” said Mrs Pentecost. “It can sometimes just be an easy and effective tool for everyday life. It creates a safe and positive environment for you to find the right path in life.” If you’re feeling deflated, tired, depressed, lacking goals or inspiration, have been through a traumatic or dramatic experience or simply feel like something is missing then enlisting a life coach could be just what you need. This guidance is specifically for you, and usually makes perfect sense with what is happening in your life,” Mrs Pentecost said. Introduction to a Better Life BY ALAN SOLOMON Ex-military Physical Training Instructor, Health and Fitness Coach, Relaxation and Sports Masseuse, Journalist, TV Presenter, International Speaker Business Owner, Student, Motivator and Encourager

When we are born our minds are unpolluted. It knows no constraints and is without boundaries or limits. Our mind does not know or comprehend the proverbial ‘box.’ Between the ages of two and four, our senses have no filters so everything we see, hear, touch, taste and smell is absorbed and remembered by the complex networks of neuro-synapses in our brain. These crucial years are the most important stages of our brain’s development. As we grow we learn from our experiences, good or bad, which in turn develops our intrinsic filters. We learn if something is hot not to touch it, not to go near a busy road for risk of getting run over, and not to steal cookies from the top shelf - we all know the danger of that one.

20

It is in this stage of our lives where we also develop our morals, values and how we see the world and others.

Unfortunately, most of us don’t always have positive experiences when starting out in life - be it broken marriages, abuse, poverty, bullying, illness, weight issues, confusion, jealously and the list goes on and on. These experiences shape our perceptions of life and the world around us.

There is always something or someone we can blame for why we have not reached our full potential. In saying that, regardless of who you are, where you are from, what your situation is or what has happened to you - if you are prepared to give it a go, you can achieve anything. Over the coming months I will be sharing my own experiences on what I have learnt through personal development, trial and error, success and failure and everything in between.

This column will challenge you and it will push you outside your comfort zone I have invested a huge amount of time and resources in developing myself, not only vocational and educational but in character as well. Why, you may ask? If we have a richer, fuller life with a high standard of living, the more we have, the more we are able to help others. This column will challenge you and it will push you outside your comfort zone. I make no apology for that. Read them as if I am an unreasonable friend who can talk straight with you but in a gracious manner - because that is exactly what a mentor, coach, motivator and encourager does. You are the greatest investment on this planet. You owe it to yourself to become the best that you can be. He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata! He tangata! He tangata! What is the most important thing in the world? It is people! It is people! It is people! PART ONE - IMAGINATION Right now, you have everything you need to start your journey of achieving your greatest dreams and desires.

This is a pretty bold statement considering I don’t know you or your circumstances, but it’s true. I’m not talking about finances, resources, intelligence, university degrees or a prefect upbringing. All you need to achieve your greatest ambition is imagination. It’s the focus of the first of these motivational columns I will be sharing with you. If you were asked to go snowboarding for a week, had a wedding to attend in Australia, or your car needed urgent work and you didn’t have enough money, what would your reply be? Yes you guessed it, “I can’t afford it!” Guess what? You would be right - you can’t! That’s it, your imagination shuts down, nothing creative will happen and it’s game over. American industrialist and founder of the Ford Motor Company, Henry Ford’s most famous quote was, ‘whether you think you can, or you think you can’t - you’re right.’ This is a maxim I live by. Read it again, whether YOU THINK you can, or YOU THINK you can’t--YOU’RE RIGHT. With the three examples above, shift your mind-set to ‘HOW... can I afford it?’ Your creative juices will kick in, allowing your imagination to move up a gear. You will begin coming up with ideas and ways to make or find the money you need.

It is honestly that easy. Ideas and strategies will come to you such as, ‘maybe I can work a couple of extra shifts a week for the next two or three months,’ or ‘maybe I can find a temporary weekend job’, or ‘I can sell that CD collection I don’t really listen to anymore,’ TradeMe is great for that. Look at ways you can temporary cut back on things, like that daily coffee, weekend wine or even extras on the shopping list. Once you allow your imagination to flow, it can start to take you on a journey in your mind’s eye, you can start to visualize your future of what/where you want to go. This will motivate and encourage you to plan to achieve your dreams and desires. Whatever is created in your imagination will require you to make a decision, which nicely leads me onto part two for next month - Making a decision. ‘If you can see it in your mind, you can hold it in your hand,’ another amazing quote by world famous life coach Bob Proctor. You see, success comes in a can. Re-read this column and see how many times you read the word ‘can’. Have a great month, stay blessed and love all who are around you. See the September issue of Nevaeh for the next installment of Alan’s motivational column.

WOMEN IN WORK Nevaeh chats to working mum Tracy Notman to find out how she balances her work, home and social life.

For women in work, it has never been harder to raise children, maintain a career and fulfill all the other obligations and duties that everyday life brings. That may be because 30 years ago it just wasn’t the norm. With harder economic times and more opportunities now available to women who want to excel in fast paced careers, today we are taking on our traditional father’s job as well as maintaining our mother’s role. It’s hard but not impossible. For Rotorua local Tracy Notman, ‘juggle’ might as well be her middle name. The working mother of two, whose husband has recently come back from working in Saudi Arabia, and now works in Auckland Monday to Friday, balance is the key to a functioning lifestyle. “We do what we have to do to make it work,” said Tracey.

The career orientated beauty who has recently started her own business, runs a tight ship, with the mindset that no opportunity will pass her family by.

don’t worry about tomorrow if today hasn’t finished With that being said - what better person to compile a list of tips for all those incredible and hard working mothers.

1. Tracey’s mantra is to take one

day at a time. Be in the moment and enjoy every minute of it!

“Don’t worry about tomorrow if today hasn’t finished,” Tracy said.

2. Be well planned. Being

organised or not being organised can make a huge difference to your day. Write things down, have a calendar somewhere in the house where everyone can see it. Jot down notes/ events so everyone in the family knows who is doing what when and what is coming up on the agenda.

3. If you are not enjoying what

you’re doing then change it. If something at work is bothering you and you’re bringing it home with you or vice versa then look at making some changes.

In a busy lifestyle there is no time to dwell and certainly no time to be unhappy. Tracy has a massive poster in her dining room which says ‘nothing is permanent but change.’

4. It is hard to juggle everything

and find flexible work to suit your family and lifestyle.

Don’t try to be superwoman. You’re only human, seek support from friends and family Don’t try to be superwoman. You’re only human, seek support from friends and family. Whether it’s a chat over coffee, a few wines on Friday night or asking someone close to babysit while you have a break – make sure you have a good support system to help share some of the load.

5. Don’t feel guilty. Mothers

typically put a lot of pressure on themselves to make sure they are providing for their children in the best way possible, combined with work this can get quite stressful. Just make sure the time you do spend with your family is quality, stress free and enjoyable.

It’s important not to feel guilty if you can’t always spend as much time with your children as you would like. Childcare is a huge part of our reality these days. Look at it in a positive light.

you really need to make some time for.

“It helps children grow mentally, gain social skills and learn about responsibility.”

Life Around the World After two days of travelling when we finally saw the south coast of England come in to view, we felt a sense of relief at having reached the shores of Great Britain.

24

It was a clear blue sky and a balmy 22° below as our plane followed the River Thames from the ocean to the centre of London. From high above we saw the London Eye, Parliament, the O2 Arena and finally the stadium.

I felt a great sense of excitement for the opening of the 30th games the following day. On Friday evening we settled in at a friend’s house in Surrey (south of London) and joined 27 million other brits to watch the opening ceremony which had everyone moved from bewilderment to amazement, humour to tears. It was an incredible event choreographed and directed by Danny Boyle.

Saturday morning and my eyes sprang open at 6.30am, I had been looking forward to and planning for this since it was announced as the host city in 2005 just days before the tragic London bombings. We set out before 8am in an attempt to get a good spot on the Box Hill section of the Cycling Men’s Road Race. All eyes were on Mark Cavendish to come away from this event with a gold

there was a true sense of anticipation as we knew the peloton was due soon

medal and after team-mate Bradley Wiggins won the Tour De France only one week before; the UK embraced their cycling team with a sense of true pride. The train stations were bursting with people, but for the first time in my experienced in the UK, everyone was happy, friendly and ready for an amazing day. People were chatting and joking and for those who have ever been to London, normally on

the trains people avoid making eye contact and certainly don’t speak to each other. Officials were happy to help, answering the same question repeatedly and always with a smile. Our bus driver even gave us a free ride which is completely unheard of. We alighted at Box Hill station and walked a few km’s to the bottom of the circuit that these riders were due to complete nine times.

On arriving at the junction where we were watching this event from we were pleased that although packed with thousands of people we had timed our arrival well and were only three back from the barrier, we also had the advantage of standing on the curb so we could see this amazing race perfectly. The race had left London at 10.00am and all we had to do was wait for the boys to arrive.

25

The sun was beaming down and the crowd was in a great mood. The old bill (police officials), were on the road in front of the crowd choreographing a huge Mexican wave and at one stage, one of the officers assisted the spectators by holding his beer bong for him. By 11.30am there was a true sense of anticipation as we knew the peloton was due soon. However, it quickly got to the stage where you knew you could no longer trust the masses as the crowds began cheering the official cars, motorbikes and even the police who came round the bend on their pushbikes. And then at 11.50am there they were. There was a reasonably large breakaway group and rumour was they were five minutes ahead of the rest of the bunch. Everyone was cheering the first riders that came through but what they really wanted to know was where were the British team placed in the main pack?

26

After standing on the side of the road for three hours we decided to head to the local winery Denbies where they had a huge outdoor screen set up so that we could watch the remainder of the race as the boys headed back to London. It was a fantastic turn out at Denbies with thousands of people enjoying the sun, the race and a quiet pint or two.

Five minutes later the crowd surged forward and an enormous cheer went up as the peloton rounded the corner with all five brits at the front of the group working together to help Cavendish win this race.

Unfortunately it soon became clear to everyone that the main bunch, led by the British team was not going to catch the breakaway group. For any who understands cycling, this was extraordinarily disappointing to see as the other cyclists from around the world gave up on their own chance at gold simply to stop Cavendish winning.

The pack took around 20 minutes to come back around the circuit. On the third trip around I spotted our kiwi rider Jack Bauer. He was sitting at the back of the peloton as his strength as a rider is not inhills, but is instead in sprinting, he later came in at 10th place.

What is the point (many commented) on training for years for an event like this simply to give up competing just so someone else doesn’t win? It was truly a sad moment for the nation to see their hopes of gold in this event dashed.

So the crowd turned to supporting Fabian Cancellara, an amazing Swiss rider who won the first Time Trial stage of this year’s Tour de France. Cancellara, was leading the breakaway group when tragically he misjudged a right hand corner and slamed into the barrier injuring himself. He ended up finishing the race 106th overall while Alexandr Vinokurov, an unpopular former blood doping cheat from Kazakhstan, raised his arms in triumph as he rode across the finish line. So it was on this note we headed for home and began to queue with 25,000 other spectators from Box Hill for the next train service. Thankfully the friends we were staying with understood our plea to not queue for hours and so while we waited to be picked up (in a convertible) we finished the day in the local pub with a cold pint of Fosters and a warm friendly chat with the locals. Conquering Fear - Horses

BEFORE As I lay in the darkness I bargained with god, mother nature, karma (whatever you call the powers that be), I made promises I knew I couldn’t keep, to drink less wine, to be a better person. I lay awake for hours wishing with all my heart that I did not have to conquer this particular fear. When daylight broke I thought, “In my life I wanted to achieve two things – to own a business and to dance in the musical CATS. Since I have already achieved both these goals I guess I’ve had a good run if I die today.” The fear had firmly taken hold. The thing with fear is that it is irrational and when people try to rationalise it doesn’t help. So when people ask, “Why are you afraid of horses,” I can tell stories of horses chasing me as I sung Phantom of the Opera, I can tell tales of horses charging at me on my aunties farm, but ultimately the reason I don’t

AFTER like horses – in the words of Sherlock Holmes, “They’re dangerous at both ends and crafty in the middle.” So it was with trepidation we set off to Horse Trekking Lake Okareka and met our guide Lucy and my horse TK. On arriving at the farm I felt like I was going to be sick. Every time anything moved (horse, person, tree) I panicked and held on to Lou for dear life. The fear had truly set itself deep within my bones. Climbing on to TK was terrifying, I was shaking, I was crying and more than anything I wanted to get off and go home. But through the tears I took lots of deep breaths and persevered. As we set off on our trek TK abruptly stopped walking. In my mind he was about to lie down and roll over, my foot would get stuck in the stirrups and I would be crushed to death. In reality Lucy assured me he was just bored

(how embarrassing – I can even bore horses!) So after a 30 minute walk (no way was I going faster than a walk) being lead the entire way, through gorgeous farmland with amazing views of Lake Okareka, we arrived at the summit looking out over Mt Tarawera. I was greeted at the top by hundreds of cows (another fear for another day) and Lou with the jeep. While proud of myself for conquering this fear, I was pretty happy to slide out of that saddle, have a quick photo with TK and climb into the safety of the car. Would I do it again ... do you know what, I’d like my husband to experience this – so yes, yes I would! PAULA LINES IS YOUR LEGAL EXPERT WHO OWNS AND OPERATES THE LAW SHOP. IF THERE’S A LEGAL MATTER ON YOUR MIND, GET TO KNOW YOUR RIGHTS WITH PAULA LINES - CONTACT INFO@NEVAEH.NET.NZ AND PAULA COULD BE ANSWERING YOUR QUESTION IN THE NEXT ISSUE OF NEVAEH.

Dear Paula, My husband and I are thinking of starting up our own business. Most of the work we would do would be from home. What types of legal channels to I need to go through to make the business ‘official’?

For example food preparation is not suitable to run from home. There may also be covenants on your property preventing you from having signage, make sure you are not breaching any copyright or trademarks or your existing employment agreements.

From Brenda Downs There is quite a lot you need to do! This is a summary - decide what structure to use for the business – a partnership or a company. Be sure to check your tax obligations with the IRD. Make sure there are no restrictions on using your home (some areas restrict businesses and some types of business).

28

Dear Paula,

The Property Relationship Act specifies equal sharing for couples together for three years but in some cases the time frame can be much less (such as when children are involved). You don’t have to live together to be deemed to be in a de facto relationship. If you’ve been together less than three years then your rights to assets is based on your contributions.

Is it true that you only have to be in a de facto relationship for two years until your partner is entitled to half of everything? Do they have to be living with you?

I suggest a “Contracting Out Agreement” which sets out who owns what and when or if the assets will become shared.

I just want to know the best way to protect myself and children.

Dear Paula,

From Sandra Clarke

What is the process of changing a lawyer? I am unhappy with the one I have.

I’m not sure where to start. Can you tell me what I need to be looking for when picking a good lawyer?

You need to be clear what you need the lawyer for when you start to look for a new one. If you are dealing with family matters (property or childcare) you need someone that specialises in family law but that may not be the same person as the lawyer that specialises in employment issues.

You will need to sign a form authorising them to do that and will need to pay any fees owing to your current lawyer before he or she will send the documents.

I hope you find these answers and advice helpful. Contact The Law Shop in Rotorua for any further legal needs or information.

IF YOU HAVE A LEGAL QUESTION FOR PAULA LINES, FROM THE LAW SHOP - SEND IT TO INFO@NEVAEH.NET.NZ AND KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR YOUR ANSWER IN THE AUGUST ISSUE OF NEVAEH!

If you have a combination of issues you should choose a firm that has a team of both litigators (court lawyers) and commercial lawyers (property, wills, trusts, etc). Many firms have websites now so you can read about what they do, ask friends who they recommend (but remember their issue may be very different to yours). You can also email or ring the lawyer to see how helpful they are. When you have decided who to use, make an appointment to see them and ask them to uplift all your documents from your current lawyer.

The Education Station - Study Tips Adults endeavouring to re-educate and re-train is becoming more and more common. Whether it’s you, your partner, friend or child studying - the following tips may help make the process easier, helping you accomplish your goals faster! 1) STUDY BUDDIES Get a few people together and have a bit of a nut hut. Everybody has a different way of thinking and sometimes a second opinion on a topic or situation creates the light bulb moment you need.

2) FIND YOUR PEAK MENTAL HOURS Work to your strengths. If you are too tired in the evening to study, try studying in the morning when you may be more fresh or vice versa. Find your peak mental hours to maximize your studying potential.

3) GET A TUTOR If you’re really struggling to get into the groove of things how about enlisting a tutor who can motivate you and personalise a learning style to suit your needs.

4) EXERCISE If you have a healthy body, chances are you will have a healthy mind. People who keep in shape and look after their health are able to stay sharper mentally.

30

5) SELF-TEST Test, test and test again. By testing yourself you can identify your strong and weak points. Find someone that can quiz you once a week, and then spend the following week concentrating on your weak points. Your knowledge will go from strength to strength.

6) BE ORGANISED Make sure your studying environment is clean, tidy and uncluttered. It’s easier to concentrate on the task at hand rather than getting frustrated rummaging through mess and squalor. 7) BALANCE Socialise with friends, indulge in hobbies and meditate. These are all things that help maintain a balanced lifestyle and allow a fresh mind for studying. 8) TEACH IT Find someone and teach them everything you have learnt on a particular case study or topic. Explain all the ins and outs to them. Nothing helps you to learn better than teaching.

9) VISUALISATION Imagination is the key! If you’re finding a concept hard to grasp try closing your eyes and adding a mental picture to the equation. Having visual reminders like post-it notes or pictures around your study area can also help enhance your chances of storing away that much needed knowledge.

10) SLEEP Getting the right amount of sleep plays a crucial part in the success of a study plan. Adequate sleep improves the ability of your memory. Take time to rest and recuperate so that you can remember what you learn.

11) MAKE IT INTERESTING The more interested you are in a subject, the more information you will retain. Make study interesting and relatable to your everyday life. If you find ways to use the information you learn, it will be easier to remember.

New Mum Blog BABY LOVE. One woman’s experience into the wonderful world of parenting.

I’m a new mum. What a loaded word…Mum - caregiver, cook, cleaner, peace maker and superhero. For now my new role comes before my other roles of wife, individual, career woman and exercise fanatic. Before March my understanding of being a mum was clinical. During my sickness and insomnia plagued pregnancy, I read all about pregnancy, my changing body and the impending labour. But I didn’t really think past the delivery room. After surviving my less than ideal (traumatic!) birthing experience, I was pleased to go home and begin my new role as Mum. I vowed to warn friends to AVOID pregnancy as you had to GIVE birth! However after many tears and counselling sessions with friends and family my traumatic experience diminished in size

32

and I realised everyone has different experiences. Perhaps I was just unlucky. I also realised Mother Nature is very clever as I caught myself thinking “I could do this again…” The experiences I’ve had as a Mum can be summarised with six key words. LOVE - It amazes me that the overwhelming love I feel increases every time I look at him. I have an instinctive protector role that could see me take on wild dogs to protect my boy (which is huge considering I am scared of dogs).

SURVIVAL – Surviving day by day with interrupted sleep and the loss of life as I knew it. My husband nicknamed me ‘tissues’ at first as I cried over everything and nothing. Happy tears, sad tears, tired tears; I wore my nickname with pride. TIREDNESS – The tiredness is indescribable. There’s no TGIF feeling, payday, weekend or day off. Motherhood has engulfed me 24/7 with feeding, cuddling, settling, changing, playing and teaching. Some days I am physically, mentally and literally ‘sucked’ dry!

SLEEP – “Sleep when your baby sleeps” I was constantly told. But what about when he doesn’t sleep, or wakes repeatedly, or will only sleep in my arms. Some days a ten minute nap feels like a miracle and other days I just run on empty. FEEDING – I’m pleased to say feeding came easy for my boy, thank goodness or I might have put him on trademe! Oh I had the normal painful cracked nipples along with other difficulties but feeding has ultimately been successful. As mothers we are pressured to breastfeed but this personal and often painful journey is hard and no mother should be judged on breast vs bottle.

Of course there is something magical about feeding and strengthening the bond between mother and child…blah blah, but what about the leaking boobs, the massive rock-cake boobs, the ‘good boob’ vs the ‘bad boob’, the horrible bras, the exhausted empty feeling at the end of the day when you wonder if there is any milk left. What about the itchy hot armpits, painful tingling of the milk being let-down and one boob being bigger than the other…no one tells you these things! TORN – Being torn between holding on to what made me ‘me’ and fully embracing the new and exciting changes in

my life. Letting go of any control I had on my life, job and relationships and learning to go with the flow. Routines? What routines. Days are filled to the brim yet I can’t recall what day it is or even what I had for lunch.

If you have spent time getting dressed up, ensure your make up is flawless and hot to trot. Don’t go overboard but make sure you make an effort! • Finding your own style Don’t be a fashion clone! MAKEUP GUIDE WRITTEN BY LOU PARKER Makeup is a great way to give us confidence, hide imperfections and change up our look from time to time. It’s easy to accumulate a collection of makeup over the years. While it’s hard to part with, it might be time to get rid of the old and bring in the new. Some makeup has a pretty reasonable shelf life with preservatives to slow bacterial growth, but old makeup can cause more harm than good. As a breeding ground for bacteria, old makeup can cause irritable skin and in some cases, even infection. The following is your makeup guide on how to use makeup safety.

38

YOUR MAKEUP SHELF LIFE: • Concealer = 6 months shelf life. • Foundation = 6 months - 1 year shelf life (depending on the foundation). • Powder Cosmetics (includes face powder, eye shadow, blush etc.) = 1 year to 18 months shelf life.

• Lipstick and lip gloss = 1 year shelf life. • Natural cosmetics = 6 months shelf life. • Lip and eye liner pencils = 1 year to 1.5 years shelf life (only if sharpened regularly).

• Mascara and liquid eyeliners = 3 months shelf life. • Makeup sponge = one week shelf life.

HANDY TIPS TO KEEP YOUR MAKE UP HYGIENIC: • If possible don’t put your fingers in your makeup products. Use a brush or applicator to avoid spreading bacteria. • Avoid sharing your cosmetics. • Store makeup in cool, dry places and out of direct sunlight. Refrigerating cosmetics can sometimes extend their shelf life once they’ve been opened. • Clean your makeup brushes weekly.

FITNESS 101 PRIMAL MOVEMENT PATTERNS PART II Following on from last month’s introduction to Primal Movement Patterns, here are some practical exercises you can do at home. While all primal movement patterns are important, the two that are most often performed incorrectly are the squat and the lunge. Everyday life plus bad instructions from trainers have corrupted this pattern. When performing a squat there are a few vital points that need to be observed. Mastering this pattern will help to keep you injury free.

Follow these guidelines to perfect your squat:

• Ensure that your chest is facing forward and not the floor.

• Feet should be hip distance apart with your toes, knees and hips in a straight line. If you want to perform a deeper squat then widen your stance and point your toes out a little.

• Lower until your thighs are parallel with the floor. Ensure your knees are behind your toes and your feet should be flat on the floor with the weight on your heels. If you are in a wider stance then you can squat lower.

• Pull your belly button towards your spine and contract your abdominal muscles. • Move your hips back and lower them as though you are sitting in a chair.

• To return to the upright position push up through your heels, slowly push your body back to starting position. Ensure that you push your hips forward at the end of the movement. Try a few sets of 10-15 repetitions using just your bodyweight.

44

Contact us 021 705 696 or 0275 357 403

Lunges are essentially single leg exercises but the rear leg will take some of the load. Follow these guidelines to help with your lunge technique • Ensure that your feet are far enough apart. A good way to set this is to start on one knee with both knees at 90 degree angles. When you stand your feet should be in the correct position.

• Keep an upright posture. Do not lean forward when lunging down.

Try a few sets of 10-15 repetitions using just your bodyweight.

• As you lunge down keep your front knee over your ankle. • Stop when your rear knee is just short of hitting the floor.

These are both the very basic versions of these exercises. It is best to master these before moving onto more advanced versions.

• Extend back up by pushing through the front heel

Spiritual Connection with resident medium Andy “My Grandad passed away suddenly at the end of last year. I would like to know if he is safe and happy, and if he watches over us? Does grandad have any messages for the family?”

Dear Whitney,

Hi Andy,

I feel a lot of fear and confusion around you. You need to trust more. It feels very busy around you. It feels like there is a Maori connection around you, it’s quite strong. Your grandad wants you to know he is safe and healed. It feels like it could have been a heart attack and very quick. He saw white light and it was very peaceful and serene. It took him by surprise but it was just another adventure. He says you are too serious; to lighten up, you need to relax. It feels like you are really feeling the separation from him. He is with you. If you sit quietly and take the time, you can communicate with him. It may sound like your voice in your head but it’s his words.

Your grandad is very peaceful and easy going. This may not have always been the case but his softer side has grown. Did you spend time at the beach with your grandad? There is also something about a fishing rod, and it feels more like surfcasting than on a boat. It was relaxing quality time – not always a lot of talking. Your grandad loves you and is with you, you may get an awareness of him being there sometimes, don’t doubt that. There is a younger man with your grandad. He is in his 20s or so, you need to know he is safe and with your grandad and could you pass that on please. From Andy

That was amazing to hear! Especially the part about the moari connection as that is something my family and I are currently exploring. Your reading clarified a few things and it was so good to hear that my grandad is safe and not in pain. From Whitney

If you want to make contact with a loved one – write in to Nevaeh’s resident medium. Send your email and question off to Andy at info@nevaeh.net.nz, and Andy could be connecting with your loved one.

GEMINI: In a bit of financial dilemma? Lucky for you the planets could come to the rescue. If you do come into a bit of money this month, as tempting as it maybe, the new shoes can wait. Make sure you use your money wisely and start getting those bills down. Small term pain, long term gain this month.

ARIES: As far as you’re concerned this month is for rest and recuperation. The stars have other plans for you. Muster up that extra energy because August will be full of fun! You’ll be invited to social event after social event. You might not feel up to it, but once you get into the swing of things – it will be full steam ahead for the ram. Just make sure you get plenty of sleep because you will be prone to burnouts.

CANCER: Your charming ways will have people molding like putty in your hand. You will quite enjoy the attention that comes your way this month. Why not make the most of it? Celebrate your socks off this month with as many social gathering you can. Lots of smiles and laughs will be just the trick to capitalise on your already great mood.

BURNING QUESTIONS Need advice? Ask our resident “know it all” She’ll tell it how it is I am a young girl who is dating a boy who likes me a lot. All my friends know him and say that he is a user and a player. He says he will commit suicide if he loses me. I still like him but I can’t stand this emotional stuff. All the guys I know say to leave him and that he is a jerk. I don’t want to hurt him and I still care about him a lot. It makes me cry. Sara, via email. Sara, this type of relationship can be very hard to manage as your partner is using what is called ‘emotional blackmail’. These types of men often struggle with low self-esteem and can be extremely jealous and possessive. I’m sorry to tell you that your friends are probably giving you the advice to leave him, because they love you and they can see the changes in your personality that he is making. These are often hard relationships to get out of and I know you really care about him, but if he really cared about you he wouldn’t make you feel like his entire happiness in life depended on you, that is a huge demand for anyone to live with.

??

My advice, ask for the support of your friends and family and make choices that make you happy – not choices that make you cry.

I spoil my kids, but my kids aren’t spoiled brats. I’m not sure why people have a problem with it. Why do other people care if my girls have nice things? As they get older, they are asking for more expensive and nicer things, which they get if they do well at school and do what they are told. What is wrong with that? Emma, via email. The truth is Emma that there is a big difference between being spoiled and acting spoilt. If other people are so concerned with how you spend your money on your children then there is one of two things to seriously consider... 1. You don’t think your children behave like spoilt brats because you are biased (and they actually are brats). 2. These other people are jealous that they cannot spoil their own children as they don’t have the financial security you do.

I think so long as you teach your children how to be humble, appreciative and good natured then there is no harm in spoiling them. Just make sure they understand the value of a dollar otherwise they could end up with few, true friends later on. I am a 28 year-old single professional woman with a successful career and I am financially well off. I am also taking classes for a graduate degree. I love my career and I am a bookworm. People assume that I have it all, and that I should be tremendously happy. In reality, I drive about 100-150 km’s per day, have little free time, and am frequently so exhausted I just fall into bed at night. I have some casual friends I do things with, but I have no close friends. I haven’t dated in almost 3 years. I am considered attractive, but I don’t normally spend a lot of time on my appearance. How can I have it all yet have nothing? This isn’t me, and I don’t like my existence. It would be nice to just

sit, talk, and laugh. When I do, I feel like I’m wasting time. I feel like I’m 40. Help! Lynette, via email. Lynette let me start by assuring you that you are not alone. It is a true epidemic these days that women are juggling too many things at once and when they do get time to chill out or relax they don’t know how to. They then end up feeling guilty for ‘wasting time’. This way of life can be disastrous for your health and relationships, you need to learn how to relax and appreciate the little things in life. I would suggest you read a book called Rushing Women’s Syndrome by Dr Libby www.rushingwomanssyndrome.com Good luck.

Monthly Confessions! My wife was away on business and I was at home by myself. I was bored one day after work and after hanging my suit up I noticed one of my wife’s lovely dresses in our wardrobe. I was compelled to touch it. It felt amazing. The next thing I knew I was standing in front of the mirror in my wife’s dress. The way the fabric rubbed against my skin was liberating. From time to time when my wife goes away on business, I put that same dress on and just walk around the house in it. From Cross dresser

My husband was so excited when our baby girl said ‘dadda’ for the first time. Little did he know I had specifically taught her to say his name first before mine. I did this so he would respond to whatever she needed. It worked for tantrums, midnight waking and all sorts of other things. He feels so guilty whenever she calls that he’s up straight away to see what she needs. I’m completely off the hook! This trick makes my husband pitch in without me having to nag him.
