MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear NJC Community,

It is my pleasure to share with you the 2022 NJC Gratitude Report. This publication is one small way in which we celebrate and recognize the contributions of all of our alumni, friends, families, students, staff, and volunteers who give their time, talent, and treasure to move Neuchâtel Junior College forward.

Over the last year we came out from the pandemic behind the strength of the Class of 2022. Travel opened back up for students which is a memorable and important part of the NJC experience. The NJC staff and faculty continue to make strides in their respective fields, whether developing new lessons for students, liaising with our pension families, or meeting with prospective students interested in attending the College.

In 2022 NJC began the development of our next strategic plan for 2023-2027. With input from our community of alumni, parents, and staff, and with the support of the Canadian Advisory Council we will usher in a new chapter for NJC. As our plans take shape we will focus on what we must do, what we will continue to do, and what we aspire to do, and I am sure it will be nothing short of ambitious.

To the entire school community, I truly appreciate our time together, our conversations, and our meetings. Each opportunity I have to talk with NJC alumni is a chance for me to learn something new about the rich history of our school. Thank you so much.

Sincerely,

EXCERPT FROM OUR 2022 VALEDICTORIAN ADDRESS

“...It’s these experiences that made me step outside – step outside of my comfort zone, step outside of a sense of familiarity – not an easy thing to do. This year we stepped outside, outside of planes, and trains, and gondolas on the tops of mountains, and out of river rafts, soaking wet. We stepped outside of the budgets we were set at the beginning of the year, outside of hotel rooms, in some of the most beautiful cities on earth… Years from now, we’ll get to tell people about this incredible experience we had when we were seventeen. An experience that was shaped and defined by the people we had the privilege of spending it with.” Zita ‘22

Gifts made in 2022 made a difference in the lives of NJC students. All donations, no matter the amount, have a profound impact on our students and organization, making them critical to our success.

NJC delivers a transformational experience that changes the way that our students think about the world and helps them grow in confidence, ability, and integrity. This transformation is supported by the passion and generosity of our community. While tuition covers the school’s operating costs, it is our legion of loyal donors — alumni, parents, staff, and friends — who advance the school through their contributions.

Donors supporting tuition bursaries help bridge the financial gap for NJC students. Their support allows more promising students to benefit from the one-of-a-kind Neuchâtel education. On average, the NJC experience is supported by financial assistance for one in every six students each year.

“I hold such a large sense of gratitude to those who kindly donated to the Marcel Jeanneret Scholarship. Your generosity in funding this award provided me the opportunity to, not only graduate high school from a very commendable institution, but gave me the privilege of travelling and exploring Europe, a privilege many will not encounter in their lifetime. Neuchâtel Junior College is an admirable establishment that any young person would be more than lucky to attend.”

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING TUITION BURSARIES

“Because of you, my life has been changed for the better. Because of you, I will continue to seek out experiences like these and continue to expand my world-view, and better my life. Because of this, I make it a goal to one day provide the same help that you have provided to me, to future NJC students.”

Harper ‘22

“I would not have been able to have the pleasure of this remarkable experience without the financial bursary that was so graciously provided to me by NJC’s various contributors. While I was at NJC, I had a safe environment in which to grow, and learn more about myself. I truly believe this opportunity has pivoted my course in life for the better.”

Graeme ‘22

“I will forever be insanely grateful for everyone who made my NJC experience possible. I have grown so much as a person and have really expanded my knowledge of who I am and what I am capable of. Without NJC, I would still be stuck in my small city with little knowledge of the world around me. I now hold so much admiration for new things and cannot wait to see what life brings my way. Because of the experiences I was granted in Switzerland, I know that no matter what comes my way, I am able to overcome it. I can now call myself a world explorer after my time at NJC and it is all thanks to the amazing people who donate, to send kids like me on an experience of a lifetime!”

STEPPING OUTSIDE

One of the ways NJC students Step Outside during their time in Switzerland is by learning through experiences; travel builds citizenship, global perspective, independence, and instills responsibility. Thanks to our donors, the NJC travel bursary program ensures that no student is left behind. Gifts have provided the opportunity to ensure all students are able to afford travel while they are at NJC. Here are just a few of the experiences our students had.

LOCATION: France and Belgium

EXPERIENCE: Remembrance Day (November 2022)

“The NJC experience has already made an immeasurable impact on who I am. I have learned so much in Neuchâtel but also in my travels. Each place I’ve been to has opened my eyes to something new. In Belgium, I experienced an immense sense of gratitude. The soldiers of WWI fought in horrific conditions. They braved each day in order for me to live the life that I do.”

LOCATION: Uganda

EXPERIENCE: Service Trip (December 2022)

“Going to Africa was such an amazing experience for me, and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to go. We got to do so many crazy things, like going on game drives to see lions and elephants, boat rides to see the hippos, hikes around various parts of Uganda, and so many other things. I will remember this trip as the most influential and eye-opening experience I have ever had.”

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING TRAVEL BURSARIES

8 Neuchâtel Junior College

LOCATION: Berlin

EXPERIENCE: Model UN (March 2022)

“This trip was truly unforgettable. It was so enriching and interesting, and I think everyone felt the same way. The fact that it [Model UN] was in Berlin only added to the beauty of this event.” Arnaud ‘23

LOCATION: Zermatt

EXPERIENCE: Family Ski Week (February 2022)

“Being in Zermatt with our classmates, as well as our families, allowed us to show our parents just how amazing life in Switzerland is. It gave not only the students, but also the parents, a chance to bond with one another. We are all so lucky to have the opportunity to explore Europe, but being able to do so with, not only our peers, but family, was truly an amazing experience. We believe that the experience we had at Zermatt is one we will forever remember.”

’22

LOCATION: Greece and Italy

EXPERIENCE: Ancient Civilizations Trip (April 2022)

“The Greece and Italy trip was clearly the best trip we attended as a school. While there were countless elements of each site to be admired, it was the students and teachers exploring these sites as a group which made the experiences all the more memorable and unique for years to come.” Alexandre ’22

LOCATION: Florence

EXPERIENCE: Optional Trip (February 2022)

“This trip was among the most significant to me, in particular, because as someone who has studied the renaissance in art history and analyzed many of the most famous frescos and statues, I already had a very high level of respect for these pieces of art. Seeing them in real life is an experience that I will never forget.”

MEET PAULA MASCIOLI ’75

As a member of the Alumni Executive, the Class of 1975 campaign, and a donor, Paula certainly did not bid NJC adieu at graduation. At 18, Paula was keen to leave home, explore the world, and make her own decisions. Finally given the chance, she relished it, but also realized how grateful she was to her family, who had given her “the best year of her life.”

Paula knew how fortunate she was to have the opportunity to live and study abroad, and in 1995 she contributed her first gift to support NJC. In one of the alumni newsletters, there was a call-out to help ensure all students, no matter their financial situation, were able to attend. She felt compelled to help. If a donation could help a student fully participate in all the school events and travel, she was committed, knowing it would change their life as it did hers.

HER GENEROSITY DID NOT STOP THERE. SHE HAS CONTINUED TO DONATE OVER THE COURSE OF TWO DECADES TO HELP ENSURE THAT EVERY STUDENT WHO WANTS TO ATTEND NJC CAN!”

Her generosity did not stop there. She has continued to donate over the course of decades to help ensure that every student who wants to attend to NJC can! Her latest gift supports the Dare to Dream, Dare to Lead Grant, which aims to stimulate the creativity of students so they will learn about teamwork and develop resourcefulness- as Paula did when she was at NJC!

MEET THE CANADIAN OFFICE

BETH, DORIT, MEGAN AND ROBYNE

The members of the NJC Canadian Office believe in the life-changing experience that NJC offers to students. They also hope that one day every deserving student can experience NJC no matter their socio-economic status. Beyond dedicating themselves through their work, each member has made a personal contribution in 2022.

The Canadian office of NJC is located in Toronto and serves the needs of the NJC community nationally. Staff oversee admissions, advancement, and operations, as well as current families, alumni, and community relations.

MEET THE NUSSBAUM DEFEHR FAMILY

DAN, SHANTI, LEO ‘19, SACHIN ‘21 AND COLETTE ‘23

NJC is more than just a school to Dan, Shanti and their three children. It has provided each of their children with incredible opportunities, newfound independence, and skills that will carry them through life. Dan and Shanti see how fortunate they are to have sent their three children to NJC—a truly transformational experience.

The family of five has become a staple at NJC. Both Dan and Shanti have taken every opportunity possible to visit with their children. Being able to live the experience with them has been the most rewarding: visiting at parents’ weekend and getting to know their pension families, meeting teachers, spending time together in Zermatt (they have all gone three times!), all culminating in graduation.

When the opportunity to support the school was presented to them they quickly realized their philanthropic focus matched the school. They give because they want to provide this opportunity to others who might not have the ability to do so.

As Dan and Shanti prepare for Colette (class of 2023) to walk across the stage and join her brothers as NJC graduates, they reflect on the time they had as a family— one they hope every student can experience. Dan, Shanti, Leo, Sachin, and Collette are proud to be part of the NJC family, and even more proud that they can help others have a transformational year with memories to last a lifetime.

2022 GRAD CLASS GIFT

Families and friends of the Class of 2022 came together and raised over $75,000, leaving a lasting impact on our school.

This campaign is the legacy that the Class of 2022 left behind. The funds raised help bridge the financial gap for students through our tuition bursary program, ensure no student is left behind with our travel bursary program, and provides campus comforts and improvements, all of which positively impact the daily student experience.

NJC HONOURS MARCELE JEANNERET: MORE THAN JUST A SCHOLARSHIP

Monsieur Jeanneret served NJC as President of Le Conseil de Fondation for nearly twenty years. Respected by the many staff and committee members who had the pleasure of working with him, he was known as a diligent and kind colleague whose exemplary service has left a memorable mark on the school’s rich history.

A life-changing scholarship was established to honour Monsieur Jeanneret. A group of past Canadian Advisory Committee Chairs: David Binet, Hugh Hall, Sally Morris, Gordon Piercey, and Max Thompson spearheaded and supported the project to ensure more students would have the opportunity to experience all that NJC has to offer.

The Jeanneret Scholarship has been renewed for the next five years by an anonymous donor, continuing to enable additional students to attend NJC. Not only will this scholarship ensure students “have the best year of their life” no matter their family’s financial situation, but it will continue the legacy of Monsieur Jeanneret.

THANKS FORE YOUR SUPPORT

What an incredible NJC Nine, Dine & Wine Golf Tournament held on Friday, September 23, 2022, at the beautiful Lionhead Golf Club. For the first time in years, we have brought together NJC alumni, parents, and friends for a day of camaraderie, and to celebrate our Homecoming, not to mention a little homage to Fête des Vendanges with our wine tasting!

Thank you to all our golfers, sponsors, and dinner attendees for joining us on the greens and supporting NJC! Congratulations to tournament winners Marc, Corey, Connor W. & Connor B. representing the Class of 2011!

We are looking forward to seeing you all again on September 15, 2023.

THANK YOU NJC CLASS REPRESENTATIVES

2022 brought our Class Representative program new life. These 71 dedicated volunteers are the connectors of your class and have the honour of fostering connections among their group to the larger NJC community. We saw a number of new members, many re-engaged reps, and even an opportunity for them to provide us with some important feedback on their needs. NJC looks forward to continuing to support these key volunteers in whatever capacity they need.

19 2022 Gratitude Report

MESSAGE FROM CHAIR, CANADIAN ADVISORY COMMITTEE

While the past few years have been some of the most challenging in Neuchâtel’s history because of the uncertainties created by the global pandemic, we have a great deal for which to be thankful. Andrew and his team navigated through the logistical shoals of running a Canadian school in Switzerland with confidence and clarity in a time of profound anxiety. Through it all, Neuchâtel stayed true to its mission to provide its students with an experience like no other. Yes, virtual schooling was necessary for a short while, but as soon as Andrew deemed it practical and safe, he brought the students back to their pensions, and they began travelling around Switzerland. Hopefully, the worst of the pandemic is behind us now, although we remain ever-vigilant. The Canadian Advisory Committee, a group of volunteers charged with providing practical guidance and appropriate governance for Andrew and Neuchâtel, is now focused on the creation of a new Strategic Plan to help guide the Neuchâtel team through the next few years. We are in the last few months of its evolution; we will be sharing it with our community, and beyond, at the beginning of the 2023 school year. I would be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to thank everyone who provided input into the various iterations of the Strategic Plan. We listened carefully to your insights, and Neuchâtel’s Strategic Plan is better because of your collective wisdom.

Our graduates continue to state that the year they spent at Neuchâtel was one of the best years of their lives. Our parents deeply appreciate the bespoke education their children receive through the kindness and diligence of their teachers. Finally, our students are thankful for the freedom to learn, to grow, and to be more independent in an educational environment that values each of them as individuals.

Thank you for the many ways you have supported Neuchâtel.

WE HAVE MUCH TO BE THANKFUL FOR; THE NEUCHÂTEL EXTENDED COMMUNITY IS UNIQUE AND FERVENTLY COMMITTED TO THE MISSION OF THE SCHOOL.”

MESSAGE FROM CHAIR, ADVANCEMENT & ALUMNI COMMITTEE

As a proud alumna of NJC, it is an honour to serve on the Neuchâtel Junior College Canadian Advisory Council and as Chair of the Alumni and Advancement Committee.

As a committee, our main goals are to engage our NJC community, to enable strong and ongoing connections to the school, and to encourage them to give back through charitable gifts that support the main priorities of the school. These priorities include tuition bursaries to ensure as many young people as possible can benefit from the transformational educational experience offered by NJC, or capital projects and technology upgrades, as well as unrestricted giving, which allows the school to respond to emerging needs and opportunities for students.

Our tradition of generosity has never been stronger, with over $321,000 being donated in 2022 to support NJC and its students. Our Grad Class Gift Campaign for the Class of 2022 contributed $78,000 toward tuition bursaries and campus upgrades, and the class of ’75 Dare to Lead, Dare to Dream Grant has raised an astounding $100,000 which will be awarded for the first time in 2024 for student-led initiatives focusing on critical issues in our world.

We were thrilled to add a signature event this year, the NJC Nine, Wine & Dine Golf Tournament, which hosted 60 alumni, parents, and friends for an afternoon on the greens. We have also reinvigorated our Alumni Executive Committee and Class Rep programs this year, so please watch out for more ways to connect to alumni.

Our NJC alumni and their families continue to inspire me with their passion for the school and willingness to volunteer in many capacities to make our community even better. Please accept my thanks for all that you do.

MESSAGE FROM CHAIR, NEUCHÂTEL JUNIOR COLLEGE FUND

The Neuchâtel Junior College Fund is a registered Canadian charity dedicated to responsible fundraising and asset stewardship in support of Neuchâtel Junior College. It works in the service of long-term preservation and enhancement of the school and its legacy of exceptional immersive education—it truly is an honour to serve as the Chair of the NJC Fund.

The 2022 NJC Gratitude Report represents the kindness, and dedication to our school made possible by our community of donors. We are privileged to be able to share the impact you have made over the course of last year. Our community has a long history of generosity, and the Fund is responsible to the alumni, parents, grandparents, staff, faculty, and our Board, who invest in the future of our school.

As Chair of the NJC Fund, along with the other directors, we are committed to the highest standards of financial management and fundraising ethics, and pledge that our donors’ investments in NJC will be treated with the utmost respect. Thank you for entrusting us with your gifts as we continue to build on the foundation that Mr. Leonard Wilde started all those years ago.

We all know what a special place Neuchâtel Junior College is; as an alumna from the Class of 2008, I have a firsthand understanding of the incredible life-changing experiences that NJC can have on a student. Thank you to everyone who contributed to NJC in 2022.

NEUCHÂTEL JUNIOR COLLEGE GOVERNANCE

Neuchâtel Junior College is a Swiss non-profit foundation of the Ville de Neuchâtel. As such, the College is governed by a Swiss Board of Governors (Le Conseil de Fondation) that works in close collaboration with a Canadian Advisory Committee (Le Comité Canadien). The members of the Conseil are appointed by the Neuchâtel City Council and come largely from the fields of education and business. The Comité Canadien members are alumni of NJC and/ or parents of recent students.

All members of our governance boards act on a volunteer basis, and help to ensure that NJC remains a school among the best, and most unique in the world. Together they are responsible for the selection of the Head of School, the financial operation of the College, and the strategic direction of NJC’s programs.

The Neuchâtel Junior College Fund is a registered Canadian charity dedicated to responsible fundraising and asset stewardship in support of Neuchâtel Junior College. The NJC Fund, incorporated in 1977, works in the service of long-term preservation and enhancement of the school and its legacy of exceptional immersive education.

Thank you to the members of Le Conseil de Fondation, our Canadian Advisory Committee and the Neuchâtel Junior College Fund. Members for September 2021 through August 2022 are listed below.
