MEET PAULA MASCIOLI ’75

As a member of the Alumni Executive, the Class of 1975 campaign, and a donor, Paula certainly did not bid NJC adieu at graduation. At 18, Paula was keen to leave home, explore the world, and make her own decisions. Finally given the chance, she relished it, but also realized how grateful she was to her family, who had given her “the best year of her life.”

Paula knew how fortunate she was to have the opportunity to live and study abroad, and in 1995 she contributed her first gift to support NJC. In one of the alumni newsletters, there was a call-out to help ensure all students, no matter their financial situation, were able to attend. She felt compelled to help. If a donation could help a student fully participate in all the school events and travel, she was committed, knowing it would change their life as it did hers.

HER GENEROSITY DID NOT STOP THERE. SHE HAS CONTINUED TO DONATE OVER THE COURSE OF TWO DECADES TO HELP ENSURE THAT EVERY STUDENT WHO WANTS TO ATTEND NJC CAN!”

Her generosity did not stop there. She has continued to donate over the course of decades to help ensure that every student who wants to attend to NJC can! Her latest gift supports the Dare to Dream, Dare to Lead Grant, which aims to stimulate the creativity of students so they will learn about teamwork and develop resourcefulness- as Paula did when she was at NJC!

Meet The Canadian Office

BETH, DORIT, MEGAN AND ROBYNE

The members of the NJC Canadian Office believe in the life-changing experience that NJC offers to students. They also hope that one day every deserving student can experience NJC no matter their socio-economic status. Beyond dedicating themselves through their work, each member has made a personal contribution in 2022.

The Canadian office of NJC is located in Toronto and serves the needs of the NJC community nationally. Staff oversee admissions, advancement, and operations, as well as current families, alumni, and community relations.

Meet The Nussbaum Defehr Family

DAN, SHANTI, LEO ‘19, SACHIN ‘21 AND COLETTE ‘23

NJC is more than just a school to Dan, Shanti and their three children. It has provided each of their children with incredible opportunities, newfound independence, and skills that will carry them through life. Dan and Shanti see how fortunate they are to have sent their three children to NJC—a truly transformational experience.

The family of five has become a staple at NJC. Both Dan and Shanti have taken every opportunity possible to visit with their children. Being able to live the experience with them has been the most rewarding: visiting at parents’ weekend and getting to know their pension families, meeting teachers, spending time together in Zermatt (they have all gone three times!), all culminating in graduation.

When the opportunity to support the school was presented to them they quickly realized their philanthropic focus matched the school. They give because they want to provide this opportunity to others who might not have the ability to do so.

As Dan and Shanti prepare for Colette (class of 2023) to walk across the stage and join her brothers as NJC graduates, they reflect on the time they had as a family— one they hope every student can experience. Dan, Shanti, Leo, Sachin, and Collette are proud to be part of the NJC family, and even more proud that they can help others have a transformational year with memories to last a lifetime.
