LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

IN THIS EDITION

Anyone who has ever invested a substantial chunk of time and money in paid advertising can attest to the fact that while money does talk, so do people. There’s a lot of truth in the old adage, “it’s not what you know, but who you know.” Word of mouth is, arguably, the most powerful marketing tool any business owner or entrepreneur has at his or her disposal, and the power of this medium is why the Uxbridge Networking Group continues to thrive. Crucial to the meaningful connections that come with this word of mouth, of course, is the right kind of word of mouth. Positivity, accuracy and consistency are pillars of the connections the UNG strives to create and support, and these qualities are behind all our initiatives.

First, we’re going to recap the success of 1st annual Connecting Business Event. I’d like to extend my personal thanks to all who came out to take part in this extraordinary gathering of businesses. I know so many of us met the people and made the connections that will help drive our businesses in the future. I also want to thank everyone who provided feedback so we can make the event in 2020 even better. Next, we pay homage to the 100 Women Who Care and Pharmasave Uxbridge who’s charitable efforts are supporting ground-breaking local initiatives. As always, you can also look to this issue to salute the most recent achievements of UNG members. UNG member, The Uxbridge Public Library, has a special announcement of their own about their fundraising efforts to have a sculpture created in memory of the past Library CEO, Alexandra Hartmann. Readers looking for valuable information about economic health and trends in our township will want to check out the economic statistic sheet. Keep reading, and I guarantee you’ll find exciting new avenues to make the connections that will help encourage your vision, and ultimately, grow your business. Together, we prosper! Member Spotlight: THE Uxbridge Cosmos Hyperlocal news at its best The Uxbridge Cosmos newspaper was created in 2005 as an independent alternative to the corporate-owned local papers that already existed in the Township. Its focus was local news and the arts, and it quickly became a popular, necessary voice for both the arts and democracy in Uxbridge. Lisha Van Nieuwenhove took over the Cosmos in 2013 as editor and publisher, and immediately chose to fervently maintain the newspaper’s mandate of covering all things Uxbridge. If it happens in the township or affects the township, then it can appear in the Cosmos! The paper has evolved over the past six years, becoming less an “arts” newsletter and more a general interest township newspaper. It covers local politics and events closely, and has, under Lisha’s guidance, won three provincial awards. The Ontario Community Newspaper Association granted a first place award for an in-depth survey of business life in downtown Uxbridge in 2018, a first place award for a nine-month long series based on the book “13 Ways to Kill Your Community” in 2019, and another for Lisha personally, as Humour Columnist of the Year, 2019. The Cosmos also recently won a national award from the Canadian Community Newspaper Association for the “13 Ways” series it published - a major coup for a small-town newspaper competing on a national stage!

Publisher/Editor, Lisha Van Nieuwenhove

Lisha ensures not only that her stories are local, but that the people who work on the paper are local as well. She has several award-winning freelancers working with her - writers, photographers, and a graphic designer - and they all live and work in the Uxbridge area. Together they are taking the newspaper through a challenging time - the age of “fake” news and technology are making the newspaper industry have to fight harder than ever to stay relevant. Lisha believes, though, that the Township of Uxbridge benefits from the paper she produces each week, and that independent community newspapers will survive whatever comes their way! “Just like we need to stay connected with one another through groups like the Uxbridge Networking Group, we need to stay connected to our community by learning about what’s going on with our town and with one another.” Thanks for reading the Uxbridge Cosmos!

BETTER, TOGETHER Good Things Brewing: UNG Members Support for Worthy Durham Initiatives

Uxbridge Fall Fair fundraiser through Celebrity Server Event at Boston Pizza Uxbridge Boston Pizza, Uxbridge, was proud to host the Uxbridge Fair Celebrity Server Day. The Fair has been a part of our community for a long time and we are honoured to be able to help fundraise for the event. Through our Celebrity Server program, we donate 10% of all our sales, from 11 am to 9 pm, to this great community cause. With the Fair board team being the celebrities serving and seating patrons along with supporters we, as a team, were able to raise $1000 from revenue and an additional few hundred from raffles. We look forward to working with the Uxbridge Fall Fair Board team in the future and continuing to support local community events. 100 Women Who Care Raise Almost $10,000 for the Uxbridge Public Library The Uxbridge chapter of the 100 Women Who Care initiative has outdone themselves yet again! This time, they’ve raised $9,770 for the Uxbridge Public Library, who will use these funds to support a continuing robotic program for seniors that began with a one year grant from New Horizons. This training, known as STEM training, will teach seniors how to use coding to program robots to do simple movements. More than teaching robots to dance, the STEM program also provides a social outlet for seniors, while teaching them new skills that will support mental vitality and cognitive function. A worthwhile cause, to be sure! You can learn more about this program by dropping into the library or visiting the library website http://uxlib.com/programs. UNG member Andrea Scowcroft of White Glove Virtual Assistant is one of the co-founders of 100 Women Who Care and on July 12th, she presented a cheque to Jennifer Thorson and Corrinne Morrison of Uxbridge Public Library. To date, Uxbridge’s 100 Women Who Care has raised over $281,000 for local charities. Learn more about 100 Women Who Care by visiting their website www.100womenuxbridge.com. Uxbridge Pharmasave’s Sameer Remtulla Supports Durham’s Community After vandals defaced Bomanville’s rainbow crosswalk, the Second Wedge Brewery and UNG member Sameer Remtulla and owner of Pharmasave Uxbridge Medical Pharmacy & Home Health Care Centre stepped up to stand against intolerance. He will be matching donations raised from sales of the brut IPA Love is Brutiful, made specially by Uxbridge’s Second Wedge Brewery in collaboration with Bowmanville brewing company Manantler as a show of support for the LGBTQ2 community. 50 cents from each bottle sold of this limited-edition beer will go towards the peer-to-peer PFLAG Canada Durham Region, a support organization for Canadians struggling with issues of sexual orientation. Sameer is a proud member of the Uxbridge community and has sponsored other events such as the Hike for Hospice, train rides for kids at the Uxbridge Canada Day festivities, a community Christmas skate night, and is a proud supporter of GRID’s mission to build a hospital in Ghana. To buy a bottle of Love is Brutiful, visit Second Wedge Brewery at 14 Victoria Street, and while you’re there, raise a glass to Sameer!

ACHIEVEMENTS BY MEMBERS A Life-Changing Diagnoses from UNG Member Dr. Vi Tu Banh In a story worthy of a tissue and a happy cry, UNG member optometrist Dr. Vi Tu Banh and his Vision Therapist, Mamie, have reminded us all of why we should always do what we love, and love what we do. Dr. Banh’s continued commitment to staying on-top of his game led to life-changing results for a young boy named Billy and his family. Read on for Billy’s story, as told by his relieved and grateful mother. As many of you know, Billy fell when he was three and spent many days at Sick Kids due to his injuries. When he was six, he started to complain about blindness spells. This got progressively worse. He had many invasive and noninvasive procedures to try and figure out what was happening. No one could figure it out, not even the specialists at Sick Kids. In desperation with Billy’s behaviour tanking as he was scared he was going to die, we went back to our optometrist in Uxbridge, Dr. Vi Tu Banh.

Vision Therapist Mamie, Billy and Optometrist Dr. Vi Tu Banh

Dr. Bahn watched Billy and said he knew what this was! He had just finished a weekend course on concussions and their effects on the eyes. He gave Billy a pair of prism glasses and almost overnight the blindness episodes ceased! Billy’s life improved but he was still struggling. He could not write or read sentences. He skipped lines and his letters were misshapen and not together. His behaviour was not at its best as he was frustrated by his inability to communicate adequately. At a check-up, Dr. Bahn suggested vision therapy to help Billy’s eyes learn to work together and to help his brain find new pathways. Billy had a consultation and was tested to get his baseline. Enter Mamie, Dr. Bahn’s Vision Therapist. She is literally a miracle worker. I don’t know how vision therapy works but it works and VERY well. He went from hieroglyphics for letters to real letters that are mostly properly spaced. He went from not being able to read, to reading novels on his own. From Cs and Ds on his last report card at one A and all Bs! The best part though is the confidence he has now —confidence he has lacked for so long. Mamie has made it fun for him and he has no idea he is reworking his brain: he just sees it as games. Billy graduated from vision therapy last night after a year of going once a week. Thank you Dr. Bahn and Mamie. You will never know how much this means to us. You have given Billy the chance to succeed and to do whatever he wants to do in the future without limitation.

ABS Abacus Brain Study: See Where Commitment Gets You! ABS Abacus Brain Study (Uxbridge) recently celebrated the momentous success of one of their students, Cailin, who graduated from the 15 levels of the Abacus program. Cailin McCullough, follows her two siblings, Ciara McCullough and Carter McCullough who graduated two and four years ago. ABS Uxbridge owner and teacher, Annie Hardock says, “I’m always proud of my abacus students, but especially when they graduate the program. It shows an immense dedication to their personal development.” ABS Abacus Brain Study is also excited to have students representing Canada in the PAMA Global Abacus & Mental Arithmetic Competition in August 2020—an international event that will be held in Toronto. ABS Abacus Brain Study is a member of Pama Global (www.pamaglobal.org). Visit ABS headquarters’ website at www.absabacusbrainstudy.com to learn more about the ABS abacus program.

Cailin McCullough, Annie Hardock, Carter McCullough and Ciara McCullough

For the last seven years, our three kids have been a part of the ABS Abacus program in Uxbridge with Annie and have now all graduated. Our kids are now in grade 12/10/7 and they are excelling in math. It’s amazing to see what they can calculate in their heads faster than we the parents can do on a calculator. I am confident they will appreciate having this mental math knowledge as they navigate through life.

STATISTICaLlY SPEAKING, THIS IS UXBRIDGE By Lisha Van Nieuwenhove, The Uxbridge Cosmos Uxbridge often gets swallowed up statistically, getting “grouped” with Brock and Scugog Townships to create numbers that represent North Durham. It might be interesting, however, to know how the Township of Uxbridge fares all on its own. The population of the township is around 22,000 – the 2016 Census* put it at 21,176 – people living, working, and playing on 420.65 km² of land. Of all these people, the largest group, by age, is women 45 to 49 years old. The largest male population is men who are 50 – 54 years old. The smallest population belongs to adults who are 80 years old and older. The education level of Uxbridge residents is quite varied. Fourteen per cent of the population has no high school diploma, while 30 per cent do have their high school diploma, and almost 56 per cent has some sort of post-secondary education – Uxbridge is a clever bunch! They must be – the average annual household income is reportedly $124,982. Uxbridgians are a hard-working lot, as well. For the total population aged 15 years and older, approximately 12,290 people are working - 6,390 men, and 5,900 women. Not many of us don’t work – only 360 males and 355 women are unemployed. Uxbridge has a 5.9 per cent unemployment rate. It appears that, for most part, there are more people with working skills than there are jobs in the township. Noting the chart here**, there are more people working in fields such as retail, education, and construction than there are actual jobs in those fields, meaning they must go out of town to find their work. Surprisingly, there are more jobs in the hospitality industry in Uxbridge than there are people to fill them. And understandably, there are quite a few more jobs in the agricultural sector than there are bodies to do the work. There are approximately 270 farms in the Township of Uxbridge, whose average size is between 10 and 69 acres. These are mostly beef farms/ranches. Thirteen are dairy farms, and there is only one hog/ pig farm! The remainder appear to be mainly field crops, fruits and vegetables.

IN MEMORY OF ALEXANDRA HARTMANN: Uxbridge Public Library Turning the page Turning over a new leaf A new chapter ...all expressions of hope and progress ...and all reflecting the significance of books and reading - and of libraries - to our lives and the well-being of our community The Uxbridge Public Library has commissioned this sculpture to recognize the importance of books and libraries, and also in remembrance of Alexandra Hartmann, who worked at the library for 15 years. Alexandra was the CEO when she died in September 2018. The sculpture, to be cast in bronze, has been created by Uxbridge sculptor Wynn Walters, who also created the Col. Sam Sharpe statue across the road. It will be installed by the main entrance, facing the street, and will be visible from inside or outside the library. The scupture will be financed by donations - in honour of Alex, and in support of the library. It will be a significant addition to public art in the Uxbridge area, as a gift to the community from the library. Donations gratefully accepted at the library.
