We’ve come a long way since our beginnings as a group for homebased businesses. We’re now more inclusive, and our ranks are made up of entrepreneurs, business owners and operators, as well as local representatives of larger organizations. This increase in opportunity is one of the main reasons we keep growing while also retaining the stability of our long-term membership. It’s these people I’d like to thank: the people who’ve been with us for years, and in some cases, since the beginning. These are the members that have made the Uxbridge Networking Group what it is today: a force for the expansion of individual businesses, and the economic health of Uxbridge as a whole. Now, we’re ready to grow even more. As we are joined by new members, we also extend our reach to capture the whole of North Durham and the GTA — not just Uxbridge. This move makes sense: after all, the UNG embodies the entrepreneurial spirit of the people who form our constituents, and our drive forward is what ensures we stay relevant and stay in business. Uxbridge is not the town it was two decades ago, but it does still carry the same small-town, close-knit allure. It’s this sense of community that continues to attract new people to the area, and it’s these people that inspire and develop exciting new business ventures in town, and throughout North Durham and beyond. From the beginning, it has been our mandate to promote and nurture businesses, both new and established. This drive continues to motivate our membership, and on this milestone celebration, I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has made — and continues to make — the UNG the force for growth through strength and collaboration. Sincerely, Annie Hardock, B.Math Founder & Chairperson Uxbridge & Area Networking Group

MEET THE UXBRIDGE & AREA NETWORKING GROUP What is the Uxbridge & Area Networking Group? We’re small and home-based business owners who meet monthly, building our network of business connections. There are no passwords, no secret handshakes, no quota for referrals or “homework” to be done. We’re a friendly, welcoming business group getting together to help each other to be successful. We exist to: • Share ideas, expertise and experiences • Make introductions to others in the community • Provide cost-effective ways to promote members’ businesses Who are our members? We are entrepreneurs, business owners and operators, as well as local representatives of larger organizations. Our members include individual sales professionals, business service providers, network marketing organizations and companies who provide consumer services. Most members are from the north Durham area, however we support a larger ‘ecosystem’ with members travelling regularly to our meetings from other communities. When are the meetings? We meet once a month (other than July and August), either for breakfast or lunch (see Page 1 for meeting details). How do I get involved? Join us for your first introductory meeting! Benefits of becoming a member • Networking opportunities • Promotional opportunities (including participation in community events like the Uxbridge Fall Fair and Santa Claus Parade) • Membership listing in this semi-annual magazine • Listing at www.uxbridgenetworkinggroup.com • Listing on Uxbridge Online Business Directory at www.uxbridge.com/business under UNG Members • Invitation to join UNG Member-to-Member Facebook Group

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: ALAN FORTNUM - UPRIGHT DOOR SERVICE INC. As one of the first members of the Uxbridge Networking Group and the long-time business owner of Upright Door Service Inc., Alan Fortnum knows a thing or two about what it takes to build a business with staying power. Collaboration and specialization: these are at the heart of his continued success. While this formula may seem simple, it’s also nuanced. Since his initial foray into self-employment as a general contractor and carpenter in the mid 1980’s, Alan has understood the importance of bringing together the best products, the best people and the best service. He’s also understood the importance of evolving, which is why his family-owned business transitioned from general to specific in 2001. Leaving behind his days as a general contractor, Alan decided to focus specifically on garage doors. It has been an exciting time to be a part of the garage door industry,” Alan says. Having developed a passion for garage doors, Alan regularly attends international door conferences to keep up-todate with all the new styles, colours and trends in garage doors. One of the first things he did was join the UNG. As someone who was relatively new to the area, he didn’t know many other people and the UNG provided an opportunity to meet other entrepreneurs and expand his business. “What I’ve found with networking,” he explains, “is that the real payoff is the relationships. When you network for a long time, there’s a level of trust you get that you don’t get when you call someone you’ve randomly picked out of a phonebook. There’s a heightened level of trust and confidence when you connect with someone through networking.” This confidence is apparent in every aspect of his business. From the continued commitment to uncompromising customer service to his business’ accreditation as a member of the International Door Association, Alan nurtures success by encouraging constant growth and steadfast dedication.

DURHAM REGION AIMING TO SUPPORT THE AGRI-FOOD SECTOR THROUGH LOCAL FOOD Local food producers and related businesses in Durham Region have the opportunity to participate in a Regional Local Food Business Retention and Expansion (BR+E) project, led by the Region of Durham’s Agriculture and Rural Affairs Economic Development team. This community-based business visitation project is aimed at supporting local business development and job creation in the agri-food sector. Throughout the first quarter of 2018, trained volunteers will conduct confidential interviews with a variety of local agricultural businesses to understand needs, concerns and opportunities for producers, processors, distributors, and food service providers within Durham Region. “Our local agri-food related businesses help to shape this community. We need to support, retain and create opportunities for these entrepreneurs in the local food chain.” said Nancy Rutherford, Manager of Agriculture and Rural Affairs at the Region. “Through this project, we hope to better understand the specific needs of our local businesses; helping them to continue their growth, here in Durham Region.” The Local Food BR+E project will align with the Ontario BR+E model offered by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs; which has been facilitated in numerous communities across Ontario. Survey responses will be analyzed and an action plan will be developed to address opportunities to improve the local agri-food sector in Durham Region. For more information, or to participate, contact Lisa MacKenzie, Agriculture Program Co-ordinator at agriculture@durham.ca or 905-668-4113 ext. 2615.
