20 years may not be a long time on a cosmic level, but in the business world where initiatives are subject to volatile and brief life spans, two decades is something to celebrate. That’s precisely what we’re doing in this issue of our biannual magazine. We’re not only paying homage to the past 20 years of the Uxbridge Networking Group, but we’re celebrating the present accomplishments and future endeavours of our incredible organization.

It all comes back to our continued commitment to collaboration and expansion: these are the driving forces at the heart of the continued growth of the Uxbridge Networking Group and its members. We also share testimonials from other group members who have been drawing on the Uxbridge Networking Group to inspire and to form advantageous opportunities. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: BDO CANADA LLP BDO Canada LLP has been in Uxbridge since 1991 and a member of the Uxbridge Networking Group since Randy Hickey first joined the organization as a corporate sponsor 14 years ago. A few of the reasons he brought this accounting, bookkeeping, tax and advisory institution to the UNG? To meet new people, learn more about business trends in town, and get more referrals. Heather Allison, CPA, CA, the Senior Manager at BDO, elaborates. “The best way to get a referral is to give one – so having a network of similar minded people is beneficial because referrals are our primary source of new clients.” But that’s not where the benefits of being an Uxbridge Networking Group member end. For BDO, the Uxbridge Networking Group has been a hothouse of growth opportunities. “Whether you’re a part of an organization like the Uxbridge Networking Group or a business like BDO, success is about nurturing and building relationships. Joining the UNG also put us in touch with other resources, specialists in different fields. The UNG has been and continues to be a marvelous journey for me. During the breakfasts/lunches and community events representing UNG, I am one among equals. Each one of us shares a goal to be the best we can be in our businesses for our community. UNG provides the opportunity to network with peers and the general community. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: NANCY HILL - K.R. MAY Nancy Hill, Sales Representative with K.R. May Real Estate Limited, has been a member of the Uxbridge Networking Group for 13 years. During that time, she’s witnessed incredible growth of businesses in town. “Business in Uxbridge has grown leaps and bounds over the past 20 years. We continue to attract much needed services in to the area. Technology has played a huge part in changing the way business is carried out. The UNG membership also benefits business members who are isolated in self-employment. Our members achieve amazing milestones almost every single day, and every now and then, an individual in our networking elite does something really remarkable. We’re going to recognize those achievements, here and now, starting with three UNG members who are celebrating personal and professional bests. Congratulations to you all!
STAN TAYLOR Stan was the recipient of the “Right Stuff” award from the Space Academy’s Space and Rocket Centre (NASA) in Huntsville, Alabama. This award is presented to a trainee who embodies the qualities of the early space explorers and test pilots. Those characteristics are integrity, excellence, courage and a self-sacrificing nature. Prior to awarding this distinction to Stan, the presenter spoke to how Stan exemplified those attributes. “Despite his age, he never let anything get in his way. He pushed through difficult tasks and persevered through all physical challenges while his teammates cheered him on.” Space camp was an ambition of Stan’s that reached back to his early childhood, so attending this camp at the Space Academy was a dream come true. It’s also been a dream of Stan’s to share his passion for space knowledge and exploration. He received the opportunity to do this last February, when he presented “Inexpensive Science Activities for Your Classroom” for educators at the Space Exploration Educators Conference (SEEC) at the Johnson Space Center (NASA) in Houston, Texas. Because not all schools or school boards have large sums of money to spend, he gave a presentation on activities that would cost educators a minimal expenditure and would still provide their students with hands-on learning opportunities.
STEPHEN WRIGHT Stephen Wright of Wright Web & Photo is known around Uxbridge and beyond for his exceptional eye for breathtaking shots. His photos have been shared in local publications, both in print and online. “One of the highlights of my photography career came this Spring,” says Stephen.”Three of my works were selected to go on display at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg.” The exhibition was on the Greenbelt and humankind’s effect on it. “It was not only an honour to be selected, but to also have my work displayed down the hall from paintings by the Group of Seven.”
PAT FENTON Pat Fenton of Milestones & Transitions has touched the lives of thousands of adopted children and adoptive parents in Ontario. As the Founder and the first Executive Director of the Adoption Council of Ontario (ACO) and one of the Founders of the AdoptOntario program, she has played an integral role in finding homes for children in need of an adoptive family. In 2007, when she left the ACO to go to work for the Ontario government’s Private and International Adoption Unit, the ACO Board established the Pat Fenton Award in her honour, in recognition of her many years of service to the adoption community. It has been awarded each year by the Adoption Council to an individual who has given outstanding service as a volunteer in the adoption community here in Ontario. This year, the award went to Chloe Hockley for her outstanding work with the Adoption Council of Ontario. Pat comes by her steadfast commitment to adoption through first-hand experience. “My passion for working in adoption grew out of my own experience as an adoptive parent,” Pat says. Obviously, it was an experience that would change her life and ultimately, the lives of many others in the adoption process. “Part of my social work practice at Milestones & Transitions is as an Adoption Practitioner, working with adoptive families before and after they adopt.” Today, Pat continues to be a regular supporter of the Adoption Council and its activities. www.adoption.on.ca and www.adoptontario.ca.

BUILDING A STRONG AND RESILIENT NORTH DURHAM ECONOMY The northern municipalities in Durham Region (Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge) share many similarities when it comes to tackling challenges related to economic growth. The Vibrant North Durham Economic Development Plan 2013-2018 (the Plan) represents an intentionally coordinated approach to economic development that seeks to maximize opportunities to build a strong and resilient economy. The Plan was developed through a coordinated and collaborative approach between the Region of Durham and the Townships of Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock. It is built on the recognition that coordinating resources, eliminating duplication and working together effectively can help build a strong and resilient rural economy. There are four strategies identified in the Plan as the foundations to building a strong and resilient economy: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Each year, Durham Region Economic Development staff provide an update to each municipal Council on the progress of the Plan and each specific Township action plan. Overall, the Plan can be considered a success and holds vital strategic importance to furthering economic development initiatives throughout north Durham.
