Annual Report 2024

BOARD CHAIR & GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa

Greetings, greetings, greetings to you all.

Netball Taranaki membership trends show encouraging growth in senior and secondary school teams with senior numbers back to pre-COVID levels and secondary participation even higher. We welcomed back Patea Rugby and Sports Club to futureFERNS following an amalgamation with Carlise Junior Sports Club in Hawera and new Satellite Club, Kaitake, to New Plymouth. 13 Netball competitions were offered across 5 outdoor satellites and 6 Premier Netball locations.

Premier Netball has produced exciting results in 2024 with 10-time champions Tysons successfully winning division 1 and 2, and Stratford Eltham Rugby & Sports Club winning both division 3 and Taranaki Championships, giving them teams in all Premier Netball divisions in 2025.

The representative programme continues to record outstanding numbers with 181 trialling, and over 1900 young players attending annual development programmes and activities. The coaching and umpire pathway is providing Taranaki with a great foundation for coaches, umpires and coach developers to thrive. Netball Taranaki ranked 50% higher than the national average in ‘quality of officiating’ in the Netball NZ national Voice of the Participant Survey.

The North Island Junior championships remain to be the most popular junior tournament on the Netball NZ calendar, and we are proud to welcome over 3000 guests to New Plymouth annually.

No Limits Netball is going from strength to strength. Following professional development with Halberg the Development Team successfully delivered modified disability netball to secondary students, teachers and careers in Term 3. Walking Netball has taken on a life of its own and is now the only competition that is year-round with primary school students to senior aged participants.

School programs continue to excel with our ‘in-schools’ program at near capacity with 101 sessions being delivered in school hours to 1100 participants and over 60 coaches.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the players, officials, volunteers, parents, supporters, and seasonal staff who have given up their time to contribute to the strength of netball. Thank you to our major funders NZCT and Toi Foundation for their continued support that enables us to provide netball. We would like to extend our gratitude to our growing family of sponsors, funders, local businesses, and corporate supporters. A special mention once again to Bayleys Taranaki for its ongoing support as the naming rights partner for Premier Netball for its fourth year.

Finally, we would like to acknowledge, recognise, and thank the Netball Taranaki Board and Staff who worked tirelessly for netball and the community.

We look forward to working with you all and are excited for the 2025 season ahead. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou.

ANNUAL COMPARISON OF TEAM NUMBERS BY SATELLITE

REPRESENTATIVE NETBALL

The Representative program continues to grow with steady growth in trialist numbers from around the mountain and we welcomed new coaches and management to the program that has allowed for a successful 2024. Coach development has been well supported and that has also reflected in our player participation and engagement. We had an outstanding number of U16 players recognized for further representative playing opportunities in 2024.

The Representative Program had five teams participating at national tournaments with a roster of 12 players, coaches, management and a primary carer for the Opens Team

The junior teams for 2024 were U14 Development, U14 Girls, U16 Girls and U16 Mixed. They attended three tournaments Marjorie Jenden in Masterton, Betty Steffensen in Palmerston North and Whanganui Netball in Whanganui. This was great preparation for all junior teams heading into the final tournament, North Island Junior Netball Championships.

Our senior program welcomed some young and new faces into the Opens Team for 2024, as well as the returning representatives. With higher numbers attending trials we were able to send a full team of 12 to represent Taranaki at nationals

Our 2023 Coach of the Year Karina Lewis was appointed as Head Coach for the Opens Team, which was an exciting and well-deserved addition to this program.

The Opens team competed at the Wellington Invitational Tournament and the Netball Smart Netball NZ Opens Championships in Auckland.

DEVELOPMENT

Coaches

Netball New Zealand continue to offer an online portal that has a variety of opportunities for all coaching levels, with delivery and support from Central Zone. Taranaki had an increase of coaches attending the online workshop opportunities and we look forward to seeing this continue in 2025.

We introduced 10 new coaches into our Player Development Programs and will continue their coach development in 2025.

Players

Annette Perrett was invited to coach selected players attending the Central Zone tournament in Palmerston North. Annette continued through to the advance camp for coaching observation.

With the new coaches in the coaching space, we are starting to see a positive shift in our representative program. There is room to explore and utilise the experience with returning coaches, while creating opportunities for new coaches to enter this pathway.

We would like to thank all our coaches that have been involved in our Player Development Programs for 2024, and we look forward to working with you all again in the upcoming season.

There were some slight changes to the Player Development Programs that were offered and will continue in 2025. The year 7&8 PDP continued in Stratford and Waitara. Satellite Cup focused on U14 players and is offered at all Satellites. Player Academy was introduced and included U14, U16 and U18 players, this was delivered in New Plymouth and Stratford.

PDP – Is a year 7&8 program that is designed to support players transitioning into 7 aside with fundamental skill development and developing an understanding of the rules of the game. The total number of participants for PDP was 56, with 3 new coaches onboard for delivery.

PDA – This academy was aimed at U14, 16 and 18 players who wanted extra preparation before the season commencement and for those who were interested in getting involved in the Representative Program. The academy was delivered in Stratford and New Plymouth. The total number of participants for PDA was 95, with another 3 new coaches involved in the U14 age group.

Satellite Cup –

Had some changes made with the target age group from years 6 - 13 to U14 players only so it would align with the representative U14 age eligibility. The goal for this program was to upskill, prepare and give players an insight into what representative netball looks like, while developing player skills Participation numbers were high with a total of 100 U14 players. All satellites were involved and 5 new coaches were welcomed into the program. This program ran for a total of 4 weeks followed by a festival tournament day, for players to showcase their skills.

Netball Taranaki would like to thank all the following people for their ongoing support and contribution to the development of netball throughout the year:

Coaches: Cheryl Patu, Annette Perrett, Karina Lewis, Kristie Rei, Gina Briggs, Robert Manu, Shayzaria Pirini, Rebecca Dreaver, Nadine Moore, Tamara Merriman, Racheal Gilberd, Lily Bishop, Mel Van Den Brand and Christel Janse Van Rensburg.

Central Zone Tournament Selection

There were 11 players invited to compete at the Central Zone tournament to gain selection into the advanced camp. Players were identified through our Representative Program and at Lower North Island Secondary Schools. Annette Perrett, our U16 Representative coach, was also invited to coach the tournament team followed by the advanced camp for some extended coach development.

The successful players that attended the tournament were Iveti Nau, Haper Leatuafi, Abi Nelson, Stella Henwood, Stella Rae, Sahara Cameron, Libby Neilson, Alyssa Seed, Amy Smith, Ava Picard and Sofia Va’aelua.

The futureFERNS program continues to be successful in 5 locations around the mountain, allowing primary age participants the opportunity to come together and explore netball in their community satellite.

This program offers modified netball activities and skills that are age appropriate for participants with their development and understanding while having fun.

Netball Taranaki continues to offer free fees for all Years 1 – 4 in the region, with this we saw 291 teams participate in 2024, with 143 teams registered in the years 1 – 4 programs.

Netball Taranaki facilitates workshops for Star Helpers (coaches/managers) to support with their understanding, learning while supporting them to confidently get involved in the program. Our futureFERNS Junior Program Supervisors and Junior Coordinators did an amazing job facilitating and delivering the program. We were fortunate enough to welcome back 2023 staff while introducing some new faces in 2024

We say goodbye to our awesome Junior Coordinators Hannah Lobb, Ava Topping, Alicia Mattock, Sophia Sousa and Amy Vickers as they move on to study outside of the region in 2025.

Subway continues to sponsor all Player of the Days a Subway voucher to players in each Satellite. Thank you to our star-helpers, coaches, and umpires for giving up their time and taking part in the Woolworths futureFERNS programme.

In Schools Program

We continue to offer delivery of the in-schools program around the mountain to all age groups. In 2024 we visited a total of 16 schools delivering 19 skill sessions, 5 Tournament Preparation workshops, 8 Good Call Rules workshops and informal Coaching Development Sessions.

These visits are an opportunity for schools to get extra support with player development, coach development and umpiring. During these visits we were able to engage with the community and identify their needs. From these visits we have seen 50% of our coaching database increase from school volunteers. Players are more confident to register for development programs and competitions. Male participation has seen an increase of numbers

No Limits

It was introduced in 2024 to create an opportunity for those with physical and mental disabilities for those not confident to participate in our community programs and competitions. This program was originally aimed at Rangatangi 12-18 years, but we identified the need to open this to young tamariki and the elderly.

The Development Team were involved with Halberg Whanau Day offering modified netball games to children. In term 3 we worked alongside the Waitara High School disability unit and ran modified activities for their students. There was a total of 25 participants.

An all-male session was run at New Plymouth Boys High School over 4 weeks working with year 1113 students. In each session there were 20 participants, from whom we saw half register in our Spring League competition for 2024.

Walking Netball continued from 2023 and was another addition to our No Limits program. This allowed a safe place for seniors and other participants from No Limits to come and be a part of the netball atmosphere at Waiwhakaiho Park.

Our development team offers fun interactive sessions covering basic, modified netball skills and Netball Smart components to assist with injury prevention.

Walking Netball was very successful in 2024. This program is now offered year-round in New Plymouth with participant numbers growing weekly.

Ages varied from 12 – 74 years of age.

We welcomed more males towards the second half of the year, with most coming from after attending either In School Delivery or No Limits programs.

Most weeks we had two courts running with participation numbers sitting at 28 each session.

We saw 9 walking netball players transition into the Spring League program with their own team. The male participants also moved into the mixed grade for Spring League.

Tamara Merriman who has been involved with walking netball in 2023 was upskilled to assist in facilitation and then volunteered in the coaching space with Satellite Cup.

In 2024 we implemented the new rules to netball across all competitions in Taranaki Online and in person workshops were available around the mountain to clubs and schools.

Good Call Rules workshops are a starting point for all budding umpires and a refresher for our existing ones. It is also a good opportunity for players to get an understanding of the rules. These were rolled out to the community in all satellites In-school and club workshops were delivered as well

The focus of grass roots umpiring has seen many higher level umpires support and mentor our beginner umpires through their pathway in a fun and interactive way. Staying connected with our grassroot umpires in and out of season means that they can go into a new season with confidence and basic experience. Alongside Satellite Cup an Umpire Rookie Day was available, thank you to Zoe Hall, Darleena Christie and Sandy Phear for supporting all umpires involved on the day.

Netball Taranaki produced a range of qualified umpires to officiate our premier competition and at all Satellite’s around the mountain. From here umpires can participate in the Representative Programs and enter extended umpire pathways.

Bench Officials:

Netball Taranaki had 14 bench officials involved in our premier competition. The committed team kept the official scoresheets and statistics for games.

We continue to have premier teams supply timekeepers for games. Time keeping workshops were available to teams for preparation.

Thank you to Adelaide Burgess and Phillip Tamatea for your ongoing contribution and support in the bench official space.
