Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa Greetings, greetings, greetings to you all.
Netball Taranaki had another successful year with strong registrations and a growth on 2022 with an increase of 11 teams; mainly attributed to the New Plymouth futureFERNS programme. We are proud to continue to offer free netball for children from years 1 to 4 and hope for their long-term involvement in netball and our community.
Premier Netball continues to thrive on a shortened season and a robust annual review for improvements to enable a participant and club/school focussed approach. Satellite Netball continues to challenge participation and attrition rates remain stable.
The representative programme is growing from strength to strength with excellent coaching support and record numbers of junior players trialling. The North Island Junior championships has also reached further milestones with an outstanding 75 entries in 2023. The stamina to include the mixed u16 grade is slowly reaching its potential and we are pleased that the Taranaki Mixed team were successful 2023 Champions.
Volunteer engagement is significant; support, development and sense of community will be a priority. This has been an area of concentration in 2023 and will continue to attract our attention so that clubs and schools are well supported.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the players, officials, volunteers, parents, supporters, and seasonal staff who have given up their time to contribute to the strength of netball. Thank you to our major funders NZCT and Toi Foundation for their continued support that enables us to provide netball. We would like to extend our gratitude to our family of sponsors, funders, local businesses, and corporate supporters. A special mention once again to Bayleys Taranaki for its ongoing support as the naming rights partner for Premier Netball for its third year.
Finally, we would like to acknowledge, recognise, and thank the Netball Taranaki Board and Staff who worked tirelessly for netball and the community.
We look forward to working with you all and are excited for the 2024 season ahead.
Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou.

DEVELOPMENT
Coaches
Community courses has continued to be more accessible with online learning and improved in person workshops to provide better development and education The coaching pathway has had a more interactive approach as we introduced a coach mentor programme that aligned with the representative programme coaches. We had 10 coaches actively involved in this programme and hope to see this increase in popularity.
Netball New Zealand continue to have a more robust online portal that offer a variety of opportunities for all coaching levels, with delivery and support from Central Zone. Karina Lewis was invited to coach selected players attending the Central Zone tournament in Palmerston North and continue through to advance camp for coaching observation.
Netball Taranaki would like to acknowledge and thank all the coaches for their time, effort, personal development, and commitment to ensuring that players have a lifelong love and connection to netball.
Players
We had 59 participants attend our Preparing for Reps program in New Plymouth and Stratford. This program is designed to strengthen and condition high school aged players and prepare them for the Representative program. With a total of 116 trialists for the Representative age group teams, Netball Taranaki continued to implement a solid and transparent process to select a pool of talented players across 6 teams.
Our Player Development program had great success in two locations during the offseason. This program focuses on technical and tactical elements of netball, as well as developing fundamental movement skills to prepare and support the transition from 6 aside netball to 7 aside.
Netball Taranaki held its annual Satellite Cup program aimed at school aged players Years 6-13. The focus for this program is skill development and progression delivered in 4 locations over 6 weeks, ending in a funday tournament with Satellite vs Satellite. We had a record, 199 players learning and showcasing their skills.

Woolworths futureFERNS
We welcome the new national sponsor, Woolworths to the futureFERNS programme. The focus for this program is for primary age players to explore netball while having fun though modified games and activities of Netball. These activities are suitable to support the stage of physical and mental development in this age group. The aim is not only to grow their Netball abilities but also to help with their overall physical wellbeing which includes confidence, motivation, knowledge and understanding.
The futureFERNS program continues to be successful in 5 locations around the mountain, allowing primary age participants the opportunity to come together and explore netball in their community satellite
Netball Taranaki continue to offer free fees for all Years 1 – 4 in the region, with this we saw 299 teams participate in 2023, with 145 teams registered in the years 1 – 4 programs.
We are proud of the development throughout the futureFERNS age groups and cannot wait to see them developing and transitioning in to the 7-aside game.
Netball Taranaki facilitates workshops to grow coaches, parents, and star helpers, to understand the modified versions of Netball throughout the age levels and provide suitable support. Our futureFERNS Junior Program Supervisors and Junior Coordinators did an amazing job facilitating and delivering the program and we welcomed the help of several High School students currently involved in Netball Taranaki programmes.
A new addition to the futureFERNS family is Subway in the Valley as our new Plymouth and Waitara player of the day sponsor from term 4 2023 and continuing in 2024. We are also very pleased to announce that in 2024 local Subway restaurants in Inglewood, Stratford and Hawera will also be sponsoring player of the day vouchers for these locations.
Thank you to our star-helpers, coaches, and umpires for giving up their time and taking part in the Woolworths futureFERNS programme.

Umpires and Bench Officials
Good Call Rules workshops are a starting point for all budding umpires and a refresher for our existing ones. These were rolled out to the community in New Plymouth, Waitara, Hāwera and Stratford satellites.
Our L Plate Learner Umpire programme in Stratford continues its growth in numbers with Intermediate and High School students developing alongside senior Stratford umpires
The focus of grass roots umpiring has seen many higher level umpires support and mentor our beginner umpires through their pathway in a fun and interactive way. Staying connected with our grassroot umpires in and out of season means that they can go into a new season with confidence and basic experience.
Netball Taranaki produced a range of qualified umpires to officiate our shortened premier season and at all Satellite’s around the mountain.
