BOARD CHAIR & GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT Tena koutou, tena koutou, tena koutou katoa Greetings, greetings, greetings to you all. It has been a unique year, worldwide, nationally and for our community with Covid19. Following an incredible amount of support from our netball family and a lot of hard work, Netball in Taranaki happened. It is easy to forget the projects completed and accomplishments to celebrate when we all endured a challenging 2020. The year started off quickly with Summer League Competition’s, Preparing for Reps Programmes, completion of the much welcomed and deserved Waiwhakaiho Tower upgrade, and preparation for the regular Winter Competition when we were sent into the unknown of a National Covid19 lockdown. The resilience of our staff and netball community was obvious when we had to rethink and reshape how we provide netball competitions, development opportunities, safely participate, and have positive experiences in a changing environment that was participant focused and compliant. Several changes were made including a shortened 10-week season, alterations to regulations, cancellation of the Major Awards and the North Island Junior Championships but we were happy to be back on court. Online learning quickly became the ‘normal’ and despite the difficulties with face-to-face courses and workshops we were still able to provide education, development and a place for coaches, umpires, managers, and officials to share and learn. A highlight for 2020 was gifting 250 netballs in the ‘Balls for Bubbles’ giveaway to enable some of our young members to practice at home during Covid19 lockdown and we extended our online audience with new online coaching programmes to Mother Earth futureFerns and other aspiring young netballers. We celebrated diversification in 2020 with the inclusion of males in our Premier Competition and the Taranaki Invitational Tournament. The inclusion of male netballers and supporting their pathway received National attention and support from the Netball community who are finding ways to improve their offerings for males and print media and tv helped tell our story. Following on from Parengaio Huhu Netball NZ National Award win we launched Bilingual Umpiring and encourage the use of Te Reo, it has been included on our venue signs, in our introductory umpire workshops/courses and print material is available to further learning. We are proud to initiate these improvements and inspire others to use Te Reo as part of our sport. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the players, officials, volunteers, parents, supporters, and seasonal staff who have given up their time to contribute to the strength of netball. Thank you to our major funders NZCT and TSBCT for continuing to support Netball Taranaki and provide is with the platform to deliver netball to our Region and we extend our appreciation to our family of sponsors, funders, local businesses, and corporate supporters. Returning to netball and successfully managing our community back to sport during Covid19 would not have been possible without their incredible help and understanding.

COVID-19 AND NETBALL When Covid-19 started to permeate throughout the world, it eventually came to New Zealand with its first recorded case in February 2020. New Zealand was forced into a nation-wide lockdown on March 25 (Alert Level 4). This forced the cancellation and postponement of all Netball Taranaki events and activities. It was a waiting game as the virus intensified and staff were reimagining a year without netball. When New Zealand moved down Alert Levels, a three staged approach to return to netball was implemented. These were Get Ready to Play, Prepare to Play and Return to Play, which eventually occurred on 13 June when a pre-season tournament hosted followed by the first round of premier on Thursday 25 June and Satellite and futureFERNS netball on the week of 25 June. The later start of the season had some impacts to our overall numbers, with plenty of our rural players unable to play due to farming commitments. However, Netball Taranaki continued to provide netball at various grades throughout Taranaki. Netball Taranaki postponed events for a week in August until advice was received from the Ministry of Health after another community case in Auckland. That gave staff time to re-plan and arrange various restrictions and requirements, should netball continue. Netball did resume with restrictions in place to ensure the community remained safe and vigilant during the second outbreak. Health and safety measures were implemented, and spectators were limited at outdoor courts and not permitted at indoor facilities. Once Taranaki moved into Alert Level 1 for the second time in September, crowds were permitted back at venues, but some safety restrictions remained until the end of the season.

DOMESTIC COMPETITIONS SUMMER LEAGUE Summer League Netball was played on Monday in Stratford, Tuesday in New Plymouth and Wednesday in Hawera with 31 teams competing in Women’s Social and Mixed Social grades. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 the league could not be completed. The below teams were leading the respective satellites at this time. Stratford Mixed Section 1 The Crew Section 2 Sparkies

After an extended break, this was an opportunity for teams to work on combinations and umpire and bench official development for the upcoming season. SATELLITE PRESEASON GAME DAY The Satellite Preseason Game Day was held on Saturday 27 June at the Waiwhakaiho Courts in New Plymouth. This day was a perfect opportunity for teams to get match-ready for the start of the season. The day attracted 43 teams with 28 in senior, 8 youth and 7 futureFERNS. TARANAKI CHAMPIONSHIPS The Taranaki Championships were held before our Premier finals at the TSB Stadium, New Plymouth on Saturday 26 September 2020. Each Senior Section 1 winner from Hawera (Hawera High School Rimu), Stratford (Stratford High School Senior A) and New Plymouth (Tukapa Diamonds) played off for Satellite supremacy. Tukapa Diamonds won the championship after winning its two matches during the morning. Senior Champion Tukapa Diamonds SPRING LEAGUE Spring League Netball was played on Monday in Stratford, Tuesday in New Plymouth and Wednesday in Hawera with 43 teams competing in Women’s Social and Mixed Social grades – an increase of four teams from last year. REPRESENTATIVE NETBALL Netball Taranaki offered representative opportunities for the Under 18, Under 16, Under 16 Mixed and Under 14 age groups. We had our largest turnout of players trialing for the Under 14 team with 130 players wanting a spot in the team in 2020 up from 74 in 2019. It was the first time a New Zealand netball centre introduced a mixed division. The Netball Taranaki Mixed team went onto win the Taranaki Invitational Tournament, which effectively replaced the North Island Junior Netball Championships, cancelled due to Covid-19. Taranaki Invitational Tournament Netball Taranaki hosted a junior representative tournament between Friday 2 and Saturday 3 October at the TSB Stadium. Six teams took part in the event, including Otorohanga U14, Taoroa U16 (Whakatane), Taranaki U14, Taranaki U14 Development, Taranaki U16 and Taranaki U16 Mixed. The matches included four 10-minute quarters and was a great opportunity to represent their age group at a representative level. Winner Taranaki U16 Mixed

DEVELOPMENT Coaches Online learning took a step forward and included Core Coaching Seven Steps, Community Coach Award modules, and the popular Mother Earth futureFERN coaches and Star Helpers with 109 participants attending. There were also specific workshops at Hawera Intermediate and Spotswood College to upskill in the coaching of netball fundamentals. Netball New Zealand also developed its learning and development portal in addition to local resources. This ensured that all levels of the game are reached and have access to coaching opportunities with continued support and mentorship from the Netball Taranaki Development team. Coaches play a vital role in all sport and we are very appreciative of all our coaches, who strive to give players the resources they need to improve and develop.

New Plymouth Old Boys coach Ann Rodgers during a break in a premier match at the TSB Stadium Players The year started with the Preparing for Reps programme, followed by pre-season tournaments, the full season of premier, satellite competitions (senior, secondary schools, junior and futureFERNS), Player Development Programmes and Satellite Cup. The Player Development Programme is an extension programme for the Year 7 & 8 players and focuses on technical and tactical elements of netball, athlete development and fundamental movement skills. Following on from this programme, Netball Taranaki offers Satellite Cup for juniors and Preparing for Reps for high school aged players and above. This year, Netball Taranaki facilitated six PDP sessions across the year with a total of 85 players involved across the New Plymouth/Waitara/Inglewood and Stratford/Hawera combined areas. Later in the year, we continued our successful Satellite Cup programme. A total of 107 players participated in this programme in New Plymouth, Waitara, Stratford and Hawera. This programme received outstanding support from players, parents, coaches, and umpires and successfully continued to promote netball, fundamental skills, build friendships and a love of the game.

MOTHER EARTH futureFERNS With a focus on participation, inclusion, skill development and ultimately to have fun in a supportive environment the Mother Earth futureFERNS programme is modified to suit each age group, “netball that grows with our players”. As the players grow from year to year so does the game modifying rules, equipment, court size and number of participants on the court.
With interest between Waitara, New Plymouth and south to Hawera, Netball Taranaki provided workshops for coaches, star helpers and parents to develop their knowledge and understanding before the season started. These workshops focused on modified rules information, equipment changes, the general running of each satellite and promotion of participation.
In 2020 the Mother Earth futureFERNS program grew to 270 teams throughout the region. We are proud of the development throughout the futureFERNS age groups and cannot wait to see them developing and transitioning in to the 7-aside game. The Mother Earth futureFERNS aims to give these young players a lifelong love of the game, encourage physical activity and create new friendships. Thank you to our coaches, starhelpers and umpires for giving up their own time to take part in Mother Earth futureFERNS programme, this would not have been possible without you all. Also, a big thanks also to YoGet and Pita Pit New Plymouth for supporting our futureFERNS programme this year.

Umpires and Bench Officials Taranaki umpires continued to service the game. We were very proud of our officials who showed commitment during the season covering futureFERNS to Premier grades. Taranaki has a total of 1239 qualified umpires. There were several umpire development opportunities during the year, namely the Good Call Rules workshops. This gave potential, new and existing umpires growth opportunities. We had both face-to-face and online classes including Central Zone workshop that covered obstruction, contact, game management, self-analysis, post-match discussion and techniques. Throughout the year we had four Centre Awards, four Centre Endorsements, three Zone Awards and two Zone Endorsements. Thanks to our Premier Umpire Coach/Assessors: Karen Eliason, Sandy Phear, Joan Hodson, Jane Hickmott, AJ Brown, Theresa Strachan and Darleena Christie and our other umpire coaches. During lockdown, ANZ Championship umpires from the Central Zone held a local Q&A Zoom session called ‘Supper with the Squaddies’ on 12 May. Umpires and those interested could attend the online session hosted by Netball Central Zone’s Josh Bowring, Ken Metekingi, Gareth Fowler, Myron Elkington, Jess Lea and Marlissa Howard. It was a chance to ask questions to the umpires and hear about their experiences.

Netball Taranaki had 14 bench officials who were involved in our premier competition. Without these personnel, premier netball would not be possible. The committed team kept the scoresheets, statistics, and time for matches in New Plymouth, Stratford and Hawera. Bilingual Umpiring Netball Taranaki was excited to present new initiatives in 2020 and were proud to announce the introduction of bilingual officiating in netball with the inclusion of Te Reo Māori. We encouraged umpires, teams, and the netball community to speak Te Reo Māori. During a match, an umpire would state the infringement and sanction in both English and Māori. This encourages diversity, culture, and a larger presence in the sport. Translations and techniques are provided in umpiring workshops, print material available at the control rooms and new signs in the tower at the Waiwhakaiho Courts and online. A series of translation videos by our local umpires were posted on social media, shared around the country and are available online.
