I
n 1992 I graduated from dental school, trained to fill teeth and deal with dental disease. Little did I know back then, that my role would go from saving teeth to helping save lives… Early in my career, frustrated that the dental model of brush, floss and don’t eat sugar, was not sufficient to maintain the health of my patients’ teeth and gums, I extensively explored the links between dental health, stress, diet, lifestyle and chronic health issues. Through my research, I learned that your overall health affects your teeth, but also that your dental health impacts overall health. Oral health disease is linked with many chronic health conditions such as: diabetes, dementia and heart disease. With these facts at hand, I see that my role as a dentist goes way beyond saving teeth – it is to help save lives by ensuring your mouth is not making you sick.
It is my mission to revolutionise the way people look at their dental health, to see dentistry as equally vital as diet and exercise if we are to prevent chronic health issues and early death. Why am I so passionate about this? My father died unexpectedly, aged 47 of a massive heart attack. I was a 2nd year dental student at the time. Looking back, I now know he had severe and untreated gum disease that I am convinced increased his risk for cardiovascular disease and an early death. I can’t help but wonder if his dental issues had been properly diagnosed and taken care of, if he would still be alive today? So you’d think you’d know if you had a life-threatening dental disease, or that your dentist would tell you right? Well no, dental disease like heart disease is painless until often it’s too late, and most dentists are unaware
of the seriousness of dental problems when it comes to preventing health issues that they won’t even tell you about them. You have your regular 30-minute check and clean every six months but all the while, a deadly dental time bomb can be ticking in your mouth.
