D

o you look at the words ‘women’ and ‘balance’ together and think, ‘that’s an elusive ideal’? Do you dream of doing a yoga class and catching up with a friend for an organic chai on almond milk at your favourite healthy hub… but the phone has rung non-stop all day and now the kids need to be picked up, so instead, it’s a quick pit stop at the servo for a coke? The point of this edition is not to create more expectations or put pressure on yourself to ‘nail’ being the ‘Queen of Balance’. No! This edition is more about tuning in to yourself, asking some questions and taking the next steps with kindness. Maybe the work you do doesn’t feel like ‘work’ and you have generative energy running through your body every day and so maybe it’s more about letting go of the judgement you have of yourself or the judgements from others who call you a ‘workaholic’. But let’s face it, many women try to be everything to everyone, which can be a thankless task and when

it comes to the crash and burn, it can be in the form of depression or illness. Sometimes this can be a cry for help, maybe it’s the only way friends and family take notice and the only time to feel ‘less guilty’ about receiving care from others and a time when it’s ‘okay’ to have a rest. What would it be like if you no longer felt ‘selfish’ and a ‘failure’ for choosing what works for you? Running a magazine, being a partner, family member, a friend, and a creative means I have a lot going on and when I choose the most creative and light ways to express myself everyday things flow… yes sometimes I have to sit with bills and BASs! But more and more I am handing things over and that leaves me with more of what lights up my world. The work load doesn’t slow down… but I tune in and ask myself if this is still working for me and then choose to really have fun while creating and being mindful of how I would like to assist more people where I can. I believe I’m more of a contribution to others and the planet when I can water my own inner garden and let those inner flowers bloom.

Life as a chef and my new awareness WORDS LUISA TOALDO

B

alance can be one of those tricky words that can conjure up so many different ideas and feelings. Irrespective of what balance means to you, how we create it is always our choice. Often times the biggest stress in our life can come from thinking we need to do it all, have it all, and be it all instead of just choosing what feels light and fun for now. I have been a chef for many years and balance for me has been that wobbly hairy line between working too much and not working at all from burnout. Although I didn’t think it at the time, being made redundant from a job three years ago was the biggest gift at that time. It forced me to look at my life, what wasn’t working and what I was constantly whinging about and to change it. I had to choose something – sitting by and staring out the window hoping for a better balance wasn’t going to net the results I was seeking.

So what are some easy steps to creating balance in your life? For me I considered the following: 1. Is it fun? Are you spending too much time and energy completing tasks, seeing friends or working in a job that just aren’t fun, aren’t interesting and aren’t contributing to your life? If so, whatever for? Perhaps it is time to look at these choices and see what else you could choose. 2. Could you be doing less and creating more? It is easy to fall into the trap of the false busy – sometimes just spending a few dollars asking someone else to complete a job for us can free up our time to create more with it in turn allowing more possibilities for ease, money and fun to enter our lives. 3. Can you change one thing right now? A full lifestyle overhaul is not always the most practical pathway – is there just one thing you could change to create some ease and balance?

Cashew Mango Combo RECIPE ABIGAIL O’NEILL

Mmm! This delightful chewy, raw cacao chocolate reminds me of something I ate as a child, some naughty sweet treat. It tastes like luscious chocolate lollies with a little cashew crunch. Prep time: 10 minutes + setting time. Makes 15 chunks of heavenly goodness. Ingredients: 60g Power Super Foods cacao butter, finely chopped 2 tbsp cashew butter, or raw nut butter of your choice 1-2 tbsp maple syrup, or sweetener of your choice ¼ cup chunky chopped organic raw cashews ½ cup organic dried mango, finely chopped ¼ cup Power Super Foods raw cacao powder A few whole cashews for decorating top (optional)

Do I even need to spring clean? WORDS JOEL GRACE

et me ask you a few questions. How clean is your house right now? Does your shower need a good scrub? Do you need to vacuum the dust hiding under your couch? Have you got any old unwanted clothes cluttering up your wardrobe? Spring is the time that most of us get around to cleaning the house from top to bottom. There’s no better feeling than a beautifully clean and tidy home, and you can sit back and enjoy your spotless surroundings. But what’s the point of having a clean house when the only REAL place you have to live (your BODY) – needs a good clean too? In my opinion, when we fill our bodies with rubbish like refined sugar, processed foods, alcoholic beverages and animal products eventually it’s going to become pretty messy in there! Why mouth breathing is bad for your health WORDS DR WEI SHEN

• We bypass the entire air filtration and conditioning system and drag large volumes of untreated air directly into the sensitive lung passages. • This air contains viral and bacterial matter and we can be more susceptible to coughs, colds and chest infections. • We dry out and irritate the lung tissue and cause it to produce mucus to protect itself. Continued mouth breathing dries this mucus, makes it sticky and hard to shift. Mucus takes up valuable space in the airways which are already narrowed due to the smooth muscle spasm, wheezing is a common result. • We breathe out far more carbon dioxide than we would through our noses and this lower level of retained CO2 makes our breathing tubes much more susceptible to spasm. • The constantly low level of CO2 which results from mouth breathing causes the breathing trigger to reset itself

to this lower level. This makes us overbreathe on a permanent basis, but it seems to be normal to us. • We also remove the support that the tongue provides to the upper jaw and this can cause narrowing of the jaw and crowding of teeth. • Constant mouth breathing alters the pH of the saliva, removes some of its antibacterial effect and we become more susceptible to tooth decay. • Mouth breathing is directly related to the majority of upper respiratory tract infections especially, ear nose and throat, inflamed adenoids and sinuses. What is the answer? Learn how to breathe less and bring your breathing pattern back to normal. Store more CO2 in your lungs and blood. Normal breathing is defined as: - 8-10 breaths per minute. - In and out through the nose. - 4-5 litres of air per minute.

- Driven by the diaphragm. - Silent. - No upper chest movement. Breathing from the diaphragm: Slow, gentle and rhythmic breathing from the diaphragm is the key to this, as is keeping the mouth closed and breathing through the nose. Shallow breathing only uses the top one third of the lungs and severely restricts the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide that can be exchanged. Five ways to satisfy hunger without food! WORDS JULES O’NEILL

F

ood ideas are everywhere lately. So much information is available on how to nurture and nourish our cells with food. What to eat, what not to eat, when to eat, how much to eat: it is so easy to become obsessed with food and eating. All of us feel hunger at times and can instantly relate that feeling to food alone. The feeling of hunger can sometimes be your body’s way of reaching you and grabbing your attention. There are many ways our cells can feel nourished and nurtured that are unrelated to food and just as effective as eating a nutritious meal. If this feels light for you, the next time you feel hungry tune into the feeling and ask yourself, “Am I hungry for food or do my cells want to be nurtured and nourished another way?” Your own inner guidance will assist you here. If you feel lighter being nurtured and nourished in another way, here are 5 ways to choose from.

1. Nature and the Outdoors: Your cells love it – no matter what the weather! Aim to give yourself an hour a day to tune into nature. Feeling the earth under your bare feet, the warmth of sunshine on your body, the breeze against your skin or somewhere in nature where all its glory can reach you. 2. Breathe: Find a quiet spot, sit and either open or close your eyes. You can use a guided meditation; your own imagination or simply focus and tune into your breathing. 3. Get Creative: Follow your joy. Draw, sing, write, paint, garden, decorate or birth and create an idea. Any creative process allows you to be the receiver of a broader perspective. It activates connection to your higher self and who you are. Extremely nurturing and nourishing! 4. Be inspired by someone else’s creativity: We all have access to what’s out there globally. It is so easy to be inspired by the creativity

and excitements of other amazing souls. Tune into your favourite field either through YouTube, reading, live speakers, courses, retreats or simply take the time to listen to someone in your family. Go see a movie, live theatre or something similar. There are now infinite ways to be inspired by the creativity in others. 5. Self Awareness: One of my favourite ways to nurture and nourish myself is through awareness. Discovering more of who I am, new things that excite my heart, expanding the ones that already excite my heart, and connecting more to my higher self. The next time you feel hungry, pick one of your desired ways to gather and create awareness and connect with someone uplifting and like-minded and go for it. FOOD FOR THE SOUL

Are you just tired or do you have adrenal fatigue? WORDS SUZI LE FANUE BSc (Biomedical), Naturopath & Nutritionist

H

ave you heard of adrenal fatigue? It can strike anyone, even if on the exterior they appear physically healthy and totally composed. Many question whether or not adrenal fatigue really exists. So this often makes it hard for those to know if they have it or not. Those with adrenal fatigue will often visit their doctor many times and feel as though many questions are left unanswered. What sort of symptoms would you display if you had adrenal fatigue? The biggest one is obviously excessive fatigue. This may be accompanied with poor immunity, feeling run down, changes in blood pressure, difficultly waking up in the morning, low libido, mental fogginess, poor memory and irritability, particularly when overwhelmed. You will generally feel like it doesn’t matter how much you sleep, you will still be tired! How does this happen? The biggest cause is long term stress and burn-out. Our body is designed to have a stress response for a very short period of time. If on a day-to-day basis we are continually stressed, busy or overwhelmed, the body keeps on producing massive amounts of the stress hormones from the adrenal glands. With time they fatigue and the production of the hormone, cortisol, reduces.

What do you do if you have adrenal fatigue: Reduce carbohydrates and remove refined sugar. Generally our diets sit too heavy towards carbohydrate. When you eat refined sugar, processed or simple carbohydrates your body releases insulin. This hormone causes your blood sugar levels to peak and then drop. Those with adrenal fatigue are usually more sensitive to these peaks and troughs. I tend to recommend keeping carbohydrate to a low-moderate level (never very low) and making sure there is protein at each meal and at least three cups of low starch vegies to help balance your blood sugar levels. Getting your carbohydrates from sources like quinoa, sweet potato and pumpkin are generally better sources than the grainy types. Eat smaller portions. You may also benefit from eating six smaller meals over the day rather than three big meals to help balance your blood sugar levels. And reduce the heaviness of food as the day goes on, to assist in the digestion of your food. A stressed gut can impact the adrenal glands. Eat plenty of colourful fruit and vegies. Add high antioxidant fruits in your diet. Fantastic fruit examples include berries and kiwi fruit. I always say your shopping basket should look

like the rainbow. Of course, only natural colours! Cut out the caffeine. Your morning coffee may feel like it is giving you a boost, but that is very short lived. It is adding pressure onto your adrenals and over the long term can contribute to fatigue. Add in some gut boosting goodness! Bone broth is incredible. It contains an abundance of antiinflammatory, immune boosting and gut healing nutrients. You can use it as either a base for soups and casseroles or sip as a hot drink. Brew some tea. A combination of licorice and Siberian ginseng is a blend that comes to mind. A tasty combination and great for a subtle pick-up. So if you are presenting with these symptoms request for your adrenals and the nutrients essential for adrenal function to be tested with both the assistance of your GP and Naturopath. We generally prefer the hormone cortisol to be measured over the day and not just a single sample to see where your adrenals function at their highest and lowest. LET GO AND FLOURISH INTERVIEW WITH NAT KRINGOUDIS WORDS AMY TAYLOR-KABBAZ

T

here is one word that keeps coming up when speaking with Nat Kringoudis, author, Chinese medicine practitioner, and hormone specialist. Surrender. And you can see why. This champion for work life balance had been in her fourth year of practice, working to build her clientele and reputation, when she fell pregnant with her first child. Her hours were long – she travelled to regional areas fortnightly to see in excess of fifty patients in two days, and as anyone building a small business would know, there was a lot of pressure, a lot of stress, and a lot of ‘unbalance’. And then, at 30 weeks, she went into early labour with her daughter. In her words, she was “just over doing it.” And so the journey to surrender began. “It was pretty dramatic – I had to be airlifted from Mildura back to the hospital, and it was a really scary and horrific time. And then when I was told I had to be on bed rest for the next ten weeks – that’s when it all changed for me.” “As you can imagine, I don’t do bed rest very well. That was a big lesson for me, and a big transition into motherhood and becoming aware of how I need to juggle everything.” “After the first two weeks of couch rest, my husband would often come home and find me crying because surrendering to that was just so hard. He would remind me that it was going to be fine, that it was only ten weeks, and that I had to get comfortable with not doing anything. And then, something just clicked a couple of weeks in; that I realised that this was my lesson, and I actually started accepting it.” A lesson, she says, she believes we all need to accept if we want to embrace a real balance in life. “The beautiful thing about my own

journey, and everyone’s journey, is that it’s all about surrendering, and it often takes a turning point for us to make any real difference and change. I had to keep learning this, even after my daughter was born. I had to learn what was worth worrying about, and what wasn’t. Children are amazing at doing that!” While she’s quick to point out that

not everyone needs to become a parent to face this turning point in their life, she says motherhood and the desire to have both a career and be there for her children, has always been a driving force in her life. “There was a turning point in my business when I had to get really clear on what I wanted because I didn’t want to

sacrifice my business, and I didn’t want to sacrifice being a Mum either. Once again, it came down to surrendering. Part of that was also coming to the understanding that it was okay to be a working mum (there’s so much judgement around it). Some women love being at home, some need to work. So once I removed that pressure on

myself and accepted what worked for me without judgement, it was much easier to make those decisions.” She also speaks a lot about our need, especially as women, to let go of our superwoman ideals. “Another big thing I had to surrender to was building a community of people I could rely on around me, rather than doing this alone, because that’s not only very ambitious, but also sets yourself up for disaster. “A big realisation for me was that when I was home with my children, I had to be present with them, and when I was at work, I had to present with my staff and clients. And that’s not always that easy to do! But once you start establishing some good habits, and practise that awareness, then you can start to use your time so much better. “If I go home and open up my laptop after picking up my kids, I’m not productive. I like to think I am! But I’m not. It’s actually working against the natural flow of things. And while there are times I have to do it, there would have been a time I was doing that 90% of the time, and now I’m doing it only 5%.” To get real balance in our lives, it’s important to know how stress affects us, she advises. Having run a clinic in Melbourne for more than a decade, building a career talking about hormones and natural health, and now with a book under her belt, Natalie has seen thousands of stressed women (and men) first hand. “I think we need to recognise that stress is many things. It’s not just being busy or having deadlines or feeling pressure, if you’re not eating properly and giving your body the nutrients it needs, it will be under stress. If you aren’t practising mindfulness and bringing your thoughts back on track, that can become toxic and add pressure. Over-exercising as a way to cope with pressure is another way. Your body doesn’t understand or compartmentalise your stress – it’s just stress. “And when it comes to your hormones, the stress hormone is so bossy that it just comes along and basically turns off all the other good hormones, like the sex hormones and what makes us happy. So, we need to look at how we’re moving our bodies, what we’re feeding our bodies, and what

we’re thinking, and if we can tick those things off and know they are taken care of each day, we can focus on the other types of stress that come with running a business or working.” Start small, she says. We don’t have to have a massive overhaul of everything straight away, in fact that can just trigger even more stress hormones! Begin with small steps, and acknowledge that you need to give yourself and your body the balance it craves after a stressful day. “The number of people we have through the door here that really just come to us to calm the heck down. There is so much pressure on everyone these days, it’s just so important we find ways to start to calm that stress and the effect on our bodies. We need to create the boundaries for ourselves. We need to create the realistic expectations for ourselves about what we can and can’t do. “If you’re having a big day at work, you need to come home and recharge the battery. I’m not going to pretend we should not have any stressful times – that’s not realistic! In any business there is a time things are busy and stressful – but it’s about looking at what that does to your body and how you can set yourself up to recover from that afterwards, and not just keep on going. “That to me is a successful business person – someone who can recognise how to channel their stress and also know when to schedule in that downtime.” Natalie now balances her two children with working in her clinic three days a week. She credits her “amazing team” in helping her find balance, and says accepting that work is a big part of her happiness was important in her feeling content with her life. “I am a better mum for working, and being a mum means I am a better practitioner, and a better person. Those ten weeks on the couch taught me that the recharge can be so important to be able to switch on your productivity later on. “In my mind, once upon a time, if I wasn’t stressed then I wasn’t successful. What is the value of

T

he most common complaint I hear from women during their medical intuitive session is that they don’t have balance in their lives. Grab your self a ‘cuppa’ and let’s get balanced! There are two areas in the body that are concerned with balance and they are the organ of the heart and the pituitary gland. The heart is about awareness, balance, love of self and others and respect. The pituitary gland is about intuition, insight and balance. These two areas are where most women work from and focus on other people but not themselves. So what does this mean? Best if I share about Mary. Mary’s medical intuitive session was about her enlarged heart that she had been diagnosed with from the doctor. She was told that she needed to rest and not do much. This was a like a death sentence for Mary. Mary was used to being very active and on the go all the time, as she

was on committees, volunteering and caring for her grandchildren. Her heart was making her aware that she had a ‘big heart’, she always loved others more than herself and she was very unbalanced by doing for others and not herself. Mary did not understand as she felt like she was giving to herself when she did for others but she was not aware that she was not open to receive the praise, acknowledgements, love and compliments that she was given. It was all give, give, give. Totally unbalanced as the heart’s four chambers are give and receive. Her insight to the situation (pituitary gland) was not in balance either as she perceived that she was not doing enough for other people. Mary stated that she once had such accurate intuition and was able to connect to guides, angels and energy but since caring for her grandchildren full time, she had lost it. A closer look at Mary’s energy and she was

working from Root Chakra – survival only and that again was because she was out of balance. So it was time for Mary to learn tools and techniques to bring her life back in to balance and look after herself. After a crystal grid session, I witnessed all duality aspects of Mary come in to alignment again for her and her cellular memory was forming a divine balance within. So for those women who are out of balance; stop, reflect and have time for you. Allow your intuition to give you messages and insight to what your mind, body and spirit require. Give yourself time: to play, work, learn, for family, and sleep. It is OK to say no as saying no sets a boundary and does not reject the person. Enjoy your new balanced life. M

enopause can be a powerful and transformational gateway into the next stage of a woman’s life if she is willing to accept with grace the changes taking place within her body. It’s a time of transition, physically, emotionally and spiritually, a time of stepping into a new phase of life. This is often a time when life circumstances push us to make the change we’ve been avoiding for years. It’s a time when women can feel quite broken emotionally and result in a deep lack of self-worth, even self-hatred for not living up to the expectations of society, peers, family or self. Men her age may be looking at younger women and her self-esteem gets a battering with the feeling of failure in the bedroom. Sometimes it means the end of relationships or a marriage or at least a big shake-up. And if a woman doesn’t stop and slow down, her body will, by showing up with illnesses, adrenal fatigue, depression or putting on weight.

Pragmatist of Femininity

W

hat if the key to your ultimate well-being was embracing everything that

you are? So many times, when you have a lot going on and you feel like you can’t balance all the different aspects of your life, that is the exact moment where things can actually start to become more magical and greater than you can imagine – if, in that moment, you are willing to ask for more, and then use everything you have to your advantage to create it. As a woman desiring to create a greater sense of well-being in your life, would you consider becoming a Sty? Instead of trying to manage all the parts and pieces of your life, rather than believing that you have too much going on and you can’t handle it, and before you take the advice of all the people in your life who say “you are doing too much!” and that you should take a load

off, slow down, stop, take time off or eliminate things from your life, what if you would ask “What can I add to my life that would make this all work out better than I could imagine?” and “How can I use everything I have to my advantage in every moment?” Being a pragmatist of femininity is where you apply your feminine power to create what you desire in life. Where you go beyond where others believe being a woman is a disadvantage, and where you get to acknowledge that there is no-one to compete with or that can compete with you. There is no one else like you on the planet which means you are on a playing field all of your own! A pragmatist of femininity knows that she can create the life and the future she desires with ease. She enjoys having a woman’s body, and is willing to have fun using it to her full advantage too!

Becoming a pragmatist of femininity makes it a lot easier to have a continually expanding sense of wellbeing, because when you acknowledge that you have a lot going for you, and choices that others do not, it gives you a sense of peace and possibility that nothing else can. Ask yourself: “Which is more true for me – knowing I can go beyond what I have been told is possible and what my limits are with ease, or believing I need to scale back and make everything “manageable” in life?” Chances are it’s the first part that lights up the most, because being and doing more than what anyone else can do is far closer to your true reality, than being or doing less. Thank you, Bridget Mary. Answer: Hi Bridget, thank you for reaching out. I feel that Spirit is definitely guiding you to earth yourself more in your Base Chakra. This Chakra helps us to trust Spirit more and more each day. I feel that there is some unresolved pain in there that you need to heal. I would definitely be calling in higher vibrations into your Base to raise the lower vibrations in there and to also

heal past pain. If you have had any issues with earthing yourself, this is a symptom of an unhealed Base Chakra. Often when we come into this life, we have many gifts and perhaps we can easily access our higher faculties such as Claircognisense, Clairvoyance and Clairaudience. We may also be very sensitive with feeling energies and this leads us to feel overwhelmed and saturated with other people’s energy. Because we have this occur, we conclude that we can’t trust ourselves or our spiritual gifts. Sprit is telling me you definitely can. You just need to learn how to moderate them in your human body. You also need to learn to anchor in your Higher Self so that you can sustain your gifts and use them wisely in your job. This will help you moderate your emotions and impulse control as well. I understand that you are feeling blocked, however, the more you trust

Spirit, anchor it into your body, raise your vibration and ground yourself, the more you will encourage a natural flow into your work. You take yourself into whatever move you make next. Some tips for grounding: • Breathing into feet as you walk can be very helpful while imagining roots on your feet. • Connecting your Crown Chakra with your Base Chakra. • Breathing into heart space. • Eat grounding foods: carrot, beetroot, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, all root vegetables. • Lavender essences are grounding. • I have 12 high vibrational exercises in my book ‘The Everyday Lightworker Bible’ that relate to the Base Chakra. Thriving Spiritually in the world today WORDS LEE FINKELSTEIN

M

any of us today, women as well as men, are looking for answers to the same questions. Who am I? Why am I here? What is my spiritual purpose in this lifetime? How will understanding all this help me to survive and indeed thrive in today’s world? What does thriving spiritually mean to me? Is there more to life than just making it through the day? How might we, as women, begin to see the challenges we face at work and at home as part of our spiritual journey? How can we enrich the relationships that matter most to us while staying energised and balanced? These are common questions today. Many years ago now, I met a lady who, it seemed to me, had found the very answers I was looking for. She glowed with love, happiness, confidence and that special something that I could not define. But I knew I wanted what she had! She introduced me to an ancient spiritual teaching called Eckankar. This path focused on the fact that we are Soul, not a body

with a Soul. We recognised that Soul has no gender. Something in these teachings really called to me, and so after much deliberation, my husband and I decided to join Eckankar. We have never looked back. It was the best decision we had ever made, individually and as a couple. We both felt we were on a journey of great personal and individual discovery that would never end. As Harold Klemp says in Past Lives, Dreams and Soul Travel, “Anyone in harmony with the true way of the Holy Spirit will demonstrate the survival factor. It means doing whatever it takes to survive another day. Why make the effort? Because every second of life is a precious moment. Each day offers another chance to learn more about God’s love.” Today, discussions and classes introducing the teachings of Eckankar are available all over the world. Here in South East Queensland, a number of events are held regularly featuring spiritual principles that are so relevant in our lives today and offering simple

spiritual exercises practised by members of Eckankar. Those who attend often talk of the benefits they find in these get-togethers. Many are repeating the things I found all those years ago. One of these fundamental practices is the chanting of a special sound… HU. regnant women want to suffer less back pain, have a quicker labour, and need fewer pain killers. Kawana Chiropractor Dr David Hendrey has been helping pregnant women have less back pain, quicker labours and less painful childbirths since 1995. “Back pain is a common problem for pregnant women,” Dr David explains. “As your baby grows, your back is placed under strain. Chiropractic care at this stage of life may have some major benefits for both mum and baby.” The main focus of the chiropractic care is to ensure the spine, pelvis and nerve systems are balanced, moving and working properly. The treatment of pregnant women is gentle and safe for both mum and bubs. Researcher, Dr Joan Fallon conducted a comprehensive study which was presented at the World Federation of Chiropractic in 1991 pages 24-31. The title of the study was “The effect of chiropractic treatment on pregnancy and labour.” The study

showed that first time mums who received chiropractic care during the pregnancy experienced 24% quicker labour times, while multi-mums experience 39% quicker labour times. Keeping in mind, regular adjustments can safely continue up until and during birth. Two medical researchers decided to investigate how chiropractic care can benefit women and even gave expert testimony in the US District Court Northern Illinois Eastern Division No. 76, Case number 3777 in May 1987. Dr Irvin Hendryson MD, a member of the American Medical Association board of trustees, conducted a clinical study which showed women under chiropractic care in the third trimester were able to carry to term and deliver the child with less pain killers. Dr Per Freitag discovered that women who received chiropractic adjustments required pain killers 50% less than the women who did not receive chiropractic care. hendreychiropractic.com.au

When we (Amanda, Kerri and Wendy) founded our group, “Disoperative Women”, we laughed at the name we chose. At the time we didn’t know exactly what “Disoperative” meant, but it definitely matched how we saw ourselves! “Disoperative” is defined in the dictionary as: “interaction among organisms living in a limited area that is mutually harmful and disadvantageous.” Basically, disoperative is where you come out worse off anytime you try to exist within a limited environment. In other words, when you are not being you and everything you are truly are, and you try to be something else or something less… life. really. sucks.

The big problem is, most of us don’t look at the world around us and go ‘oh this isn’t enough for me, I actually desire way more, yippee let’s goooo!” We go “Oh I am a bad person, why aren’t I happy with my lot in life? What’s wrong with me?” Rather than questioning the world we have been taught to believe in – the shoulds, should-nots, expectations, either/or mentalities, fairytale romances, picket fences and whatnot – we assume that we are the faulty ones. The truth is, we are just very different and we weren’t made to function in a limited capacity! As Disoperative Women, we recognised that no matter how messed up we thought we were at the time, we somehow never settled for the status quo! We wondered, “what if we actually enjoyed our Disoperative state, and didn’t judge it? In fact, what if we celebrated it, expanded on it, and found other Disoperatives to change the world with?”

The first thing that happens when you choose to become a “Disoperative of Change”, is you get to know that the rule book doesn’t actually apply to you. Secondly, you become a Super Spy for a new reality, which means you must: not limit yourself, always go beyond, realise you are the one with all the intel, the tools, the tactics and the superhuman skills to do with ease what no one else dares. What would it be like to trail-blaze into the life you know you should be able to have, no matter what that looks like to anyone else? My

Journey with Leukaemia!

H

ow often do we sit down and ask our bodies – ‘how do you feel’? With our busy lifestyles, we often ignore the one thing that is definitely the most important possession we own! I know I used to! Some 30 years ago when I first started taking an interest into ‘why’ certain things occurred in my life, I was blessed to have some amazing teachers ‘fall into my lap’! One of them was Dr John Harrison who wrote ‘Love Your Disease, It’s Keeping You Healthy’ and I was even more blessed to have the opportunity to work with him. At that time, I had managed to ‘develop’ Leukaemia and I was looking for answers as to why this had happened. I can remember him saying “that ‘it’ will go away when you don’t need it anymore”! When he said that it made no sense to me at all! Now I can happily say that with awareness and yes – much introspection – I have no symptoms and did it without

medications. (I must add here in my work with clients, I always suggest that they seek medical advice. And how I managed to turn around the cancer I had will not necessarily apply to others because we are all different.) I learnt pretty early on during ‘my inward journey’ that I had as a child, developed a habit of ‘getting sick’ to get my needs met and/or to ‘get out of’ doing things I didn’t want to do. During my life this has led to many uncomfortable situations regarding my body! Since working with John, I have continued my path of discovery and have been for many years, using what I have learnt to help others overcome the ‘challenges’ that they have in their lives – mainly helping them deal with depression, anxiety and relationship problems to do with loss. Now that earth’s energies are rapidly rising with our shift into higher dimensions, many people are finding

that the issues they haven’t dealt with are coming to the surface in the form of illnesses. These in some cases could be called ‘Ascension Symptoms’! The energies now are triggering anything that still needs to be cleared on a thought / emotional / behavioural basis and our bodies are our amazing messengers and teachers! They always have been, but now, more so than ever! We are being forced to take notice of them! We can connect to them in many ways – spend time in nature, meditate, get in the ocean – which is my favourite! Learn to talk to your body and listen to it asking you for help! W

hy is it that so many of us need a crisis before we really consider our priorities in life? Why do we need a crash before the breakthrough? When interviewing the inspiring Nat Kringoudis for this month’s feature, her story sent goosebumps down my body, and not just because of the important message. The goosebumps were because her story was so similar to mine. Too similar. Too similar for too many of us. I, too, went into early labour with my son at 28 weeks. I have also seen the physical, mental and spiritual devastation that believing I was superwoman had on my life. And I, too, spent ten weeks on my couch facing the truth about balance, and what I had believed my whole life: Success is hard-work. Money doesn’t grow on trees. There’s no value in being a Mum, meditating, slowing down, or

just being idle. To do so is not only lazy, but selfish. Until we crash. So here’s what I’ve learnt on this journey of redefining success and finding true balance in life: 1. STOP COMPARING In the age of Instagram, social media and over-share, focusing on where others are in their journey can be toxic to your soul. The biggest pressure in life often comes from looking outside ourselves for success. Close Facebook and get clear on what feels good for you. Not everyone was meant to have a book deal and an international audience – and that’s OK. 2. GET QUIET The only way to really start to release all those old expectations of yourself, and start to slow down, is to create space in your life to get quiet. Meditation has, hands down, changed every aspect of my life. It has helped me let go of my ego’s attempts to constantly be better and do better, and helped me

finally connect to what I really want to do. 3. LET GO OF SUPERWOMAN There is a new wave of women showing us success can come from being authentic rather than pushing, and it’s starting to sweep the world. Women like Ariana Huffington, creator of the Huffington Post, are leading the charge towards a more feminine approach to success – where family, mindfulness, and true health (not just the gym-junkie focus) is our goal. It’s time for us to let go of the superwoman fantasy. In my opinion, a truly successful woman knows her priorities, and happiness is at the top. Even though it sounds like something you would read on the wall of your local public toilet block, he may be onto something about how you can strive towards well-being on a daily basis. Wellbeing rule number one: Life is a paradox. Some things are just unexplainable. Perhaps you have a list of things you would like to ask the Divine when you get to the other side. For example, are washing machines actually portals to the Well of Lost Socks? Although it may seem important at the time, if it’s unexplainable, is it worth worrying about? Hair tests identify WORDS SUE NELSON

I

t gives me no pleasure to tell you that 50% of my patients; both females and males, of all ages, have Hair Tests displaying the classic preconditions for breast and prostate cancer i.e. oestrogen toxicity. Patients are genuinely puzzled. They are not familiar with the concept and they don’t understand why they have not been warned by the medical profession. And yet the concept of oestrogen toxicity or ‘dominance’ has been written about in thousands of peer-reviewed scientific and medical articles since the 1970s when Dr John Lee, a family doctor, first discovered it. It’s not new information! Dr Lee’s research was profound enough to change the ingredients of The Contraceptive Pill from exclusively oestrogen, which caused a rapid escalation in breast cancer cases, to the more balanced mixture of synthetic oestrogen and progesterone found in today’s Pill. Unfortunately these synthetic

hormones are still causing a modern epidemic of hormonal cancers especially when combined with other xeno (foreign) oestrogens like pesticides, fertilisers, plastics and petroleum products in our regular daily exposure. The gut and liver cannot easily dispose of these false oestrogens and must dump them back into our cells. The oestrogen receptors in our cells accept anything remotely oestrogenic, thereby locking in the false oestrogens – and locking out the real oestrogen made by our bodies (for up to 20 years!). This leads to hormonal havoc in reproductive cycles, and high levels of circulating and stored oestrogen, the perfect pro-growth and cell-division ‘food’ for cancer. As a practitioner, I find it ironic that oestrogen is one of the easiest toxicities to identify in a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis – there are ten clearly identifiable signs, as defined by Dr Tabrizian of Perth. It’s also easy to identify the 34 warning symptoms of

oestrogen dominance just by closely questioning the client, especially about their reproductive symptoms. In my 15 years of dealing with this toxicity, I have found it relatively easy to clear oestrogen dominance with an integrated three-month detox program based on chelating xeno-oestrogens and promoting the good minerals and nutrients that ‘balance’ oestrogen in the body. The beauty of my three-month detox program is that the client also gets to chelate all heavy metals into the bargain! magine being a litigation lawyer, driven by deadlines and results. Imagine being a hard core left brainer, working your way through problems pragmatically and without attachment. Imagine the feelings of success in this highly paid, high-profile, respect-earning position. And now imagine throwing it all away and following an intrinsic knowing half way across the world to become an expert in the art of mindfulness and counselling. Underneath his unassuming demeanour is a powerhouse of knowledge, and philosophical paradoxes that challenge the conventional way we view human behaviour, mindfulness and life in general. Diploma in Mindfulness Cognitive Behaviour Therapy which has been an integral contribution to his work. Marc has a deep desire to see purpose in everything he does and during our interview, the words authenticity, honesty and integrity were clearly defined as his core values. Compassion, forgiveness and belonging is a fundamental driver for human behaviour and Marc sees from a pragmatic perspective, how human evolution has driven us further away from our true and natural way of functioning. For the most part, many people function from the point of view that working harder, studying more and sleeping less equates to success. His own experiences of this particular mindset has led Marc to realise that ultimately the working harder mindset was in fact a lack mindset which keeps us in a neverending loop of struggling to get on top of our game. ‘Pushing’ for success, unsuccessfully, led him to explore other possibilities and he became aware of other forces at play that ultimately defy hard work as a way to move things forward. Mindfulness and awareness began to feature heavily as he became curious about the correlation between mind and body which led him to the exploration of neuroscience, neurobiology and neuropsychology, and

he was fascinated by what he found. Through his studies, Marc discovered that there is a real mind-body connection. Our thoughts influence our bodies, creating subtle body responses, which in turn influence our emotional state and reactions. Because our emotional reactions are inextricably linked and preceded by an initial physical response, our emotional responses can be regulated simply by becoming aware of those body sensations. Unfortunately, we’ve become more and more disconnected from our bodies and grown a mental fear muscle, giving it more control power than it’s actually designed and capable to handle. In addition to our mind/body disconnection, we are also conditioned to make assumptions that we aren’t even aware we are making, resulting in the way we function as being predominantly reactionary. We are conditioned for risk aversion and pleasure seeking. Our natural hard-wiring to look for danger has been so engorged that we’ve lost the capacity to follow our body’s own barometer system. In physiological terms this risk aversion and fear-based existence has resulted in changes in our brain function and we are quite literally out of balance. Psychological journals indicate that we are getting more depressed, more unfulfilled and more unhappy,

which completely contradicts our desires. However, all hope is not lost. Marc explains that this fear-based, collective evolution of the human brain is indeed reversible by implementing simple practices in mindfulness and by bringing our awareness back to our body sensations. Studies have shown that people who take an 8-week mindfulness meditation course show positive changes to their brain structure and function. We become calmer, more considerate, more deliberate and more effective. Holistically, it also has physiological benefits, making us healthier overall. So how do we change? Lao Tzu summed it up beautifully and simply when he said, “Practice not doing and everything will fall into place”. Mindfulness practice helps us to put the attention back where it belongs. It allows us to reconnect with our bodies and become aware of those body sensations that assist us to regulate our emotional responses. It allows us to move away from fear-based functioning and back to trusting in our own mindbody connection. The benefits of such a practice will be evident in all areas of our lives. on Tolman loves to remind us just how long he’s been “barking” about the coming “Peaceful Revolution”. Well, it’s been about five decades, if you must know! Yes, there is bite to Don’s bark, but it’s a soft, soothing, transcending, uplifting and gentle bite, and it goes a bit like this: trust, surrender, and be humble and reverent to the beauty, perfection and wisdom inherent in all of nature. For only through nature will holistic healing and “the truest of truths” be attained. uring October we are moving through the influence of Libran Energy. During this time we try to bring a balance between our mundane day-to-day physical lives and our spiritual connections. To neglect either during this time would be to waste the current energies. When you work with the energy you will feel more in flow and balance. So what can you do during October? Libra is considered a month of rest and preparation for the challenges that we will face during Scorpio which starts around 22nd October. It is important to take time to meditate and relax so we have the energy required to meet the coming challenges. Try to sit quietly once a day and look within for insight and understanding of the current issues in your life or perhaps those around you. This will enable you to give sound advice without judgment when the

opportunity arises in your day as you have given yourself the time to consider and contemplate. Allow yourself to look at an issue from a bird’s eye view. Is this situation actually as important or as devastating as you first think or feel? Perhaps this cloud has a silver lining… or perhaps this issue is just laughable and considerably unimportant. A good way to check with yourself about how important it is, is to ask yourself if you just found out you had cancer and were going to die within a month, would this issue really be important? Resolve the issue in the light of this. Resolve all issues under this light and you will soon sort out what is actually of the utmost importance. We become so caught up in the day-to-day issues, emotional dramas and disturbing scenarios that occur in our lives that we lose sight of what is actually important.

Of course you can focus too much on spiritual things and this is not useful either. If you are totally absorbed in spiritual things you can lose touch with reality and normal life challenges. During this month we work on standing somewhere between the two. Gain understanding of the highest and the lowest, the good and the bad, the lofty and the insignificant. Your past will not change, and your future concerns may never come. Many people spend a great deal of time and energy thinking about past problems and future concerns while the present is passing them by. Remember the here and now is a gift, which is why they call it the ‘present’. Treat it like a present, enjoy it to the fullest and make the most of it. The Mirror and Mind “

The mind is the uninterrupted flow of thoughts which arise and then disappear. It has the capacity to judge, to reason, to imagine and so on. But beyond the mind, beyond our thoughts, there is something we call the ‘nature of mind’, the mind’s true condition which is beyond all limits. “Let’s take the example of a mirror. When we look into a mirror we see the reflected images of any objects that are in front of it; we don’t see the nature of the mirror… its capacity to reflect, and definable as its clarity, its purity and its limpidity… This nature of mirror is not something visible and the only way we can conceive of it is through the images reflected in the mirror. “In the same way, we only know and have… experience of that which is relative to our condition of body, voice and mind. But this itself is the way to understand their true nature.”– Chögyal Namkhai Norbu, Dzogchen: The SelfPerfected State, 1989, Snow Lion: p32 The state of Dzogchen is primarily concerned with understanding our true nature. It does not belong to any kind

of religion or philosophy, as it is the natural state of all individuals, stripped of any cultural trappings. However, authentic knowledge of this state can only be in individuals by receiving Dzogchen transmission, or direct introduction to the nature of mind from a qualified Dzogchen master. Such a master, who has themselves realised the true nature of mind, is able to pass on this potential to students by introducing them to this state and then encouraging them to develop it in their own experience. Originally Dzogchen was considered secret, the highest and most direct of all Buddhist paths to knowledge, but today the teachings are offered freely in the west by masters such as Chögyal Namkhai Norbu. He says Dzogchen is a teaching that is ideally suited to our often busy, stressful lives because it teaches us how to live in a relaxed way with greater awareness. Most of the time, we don’t even notice how our mind works and what kind of limitations we are placing on ourselves. Discovering our real nature,

or the state of Dzogchen, means gradually overcoming all of the limits that we impose upon ourselves. These limits can take the form of our continual mental judgments: this is good, that is bad; I like this person, I don’t like that person; and so on. This is called our dualistic vision, which when followed, inevitably causes us to get swept away by strong emotions or attachments to people or things. The first step in Dzogchen teaching is observing ourselves, then overcoming the limits that enclose us. As Chögyal Namkhai Norbu explains, this is the true function of the teachings. “The teachings must become a living knowledge in all one’s daily activities. re small children balanced? Are teenagers balanced? The adult answer will be ‘no’.

Let’s delve in to a young child’s mind first. They are about pure play and they know that life is one big school. Lessons are through play and self discovery. There is balance as they know when they are hungry, they know when they want to ‘stop’ an activity and they know when it is time to sleep as they will take themselves off to bed or I have witnessed them sleep wherever they are. From an adult perspective they look unbalanced as they appear to just be playing all the time. What if we are incorrect and they had it divinely correct. Teenagers look as if they are ‘slacking off all the time’ as I have heard some parents say. What if they are balancing their growth, hormones, integration of life as a child and adult as they are caught in between. Yes they seem to sleep during the day, stay awake at night

and want to not do things or leave it to the last minute… is this balance? Not for an adult. Let’s take the average parent working long hours, spending a lot of time on Facebook, having late nights socialising, racing around after the children, travelling ridiculous hours to work or events and then spend minimal time caring for themselves. Where is there balance in that? Guess what – the parents are showing the children how to have an unbalanced life. The worst offenders tend to be Mums! I

’m a night person more than a morning person, so that makes our mornings very crazy… From the moment we are up it’s all systems go! I know most people are busy… work, self-care, children, chores and the myriad of other tasks. However, many people don’t seem to make time for love or their relationship a priority. I often hear people say that “true love” doesn’t need to be worked on, that it should just work. I always challenge that statement… “if we want our garden to grow we must water it and nurture it”… our relationships are no different… When I ask couples how they are prioritising time with their partner, the usual responses are – • I don’t have enough time for “date nights”, or • I am too stressed and tired to deal with it. What I often intuitively see is that people are not making time for love because they are vulnerable.

The truth is that many people are keeping themselves so busy because they are afraid of their own feelings and being seen on a deeper level. Keeping busy and stressed can be a mask used to manage fears and block love. I am not saying people are not truly stressed and time poor. So many people are feeling overwhelmed in this society with the pressures to keep up with the materialistic world. This is why it is more important than ever to balance life with love. Too many couples are not spending quality time together. Zoning out together with the TV is not quality time. Turning off the TV can give you back time you didn’t know you had. This is precious time to work on tuning into your spirits and expressing love through loving communication and intimacy. Most people have lived through heartache and pain. This hurt creates beliefs around how they feel about themselves, the world, and relationships.

I

f you have ever felt like life is one big emotional roller-coaster or whenever you feel physically or emotionally off balance, Geranium is the number one oil to call on. Due to its regulating effect on the nervous system it can help to relieve stress, nervous tension and headaches. Used in a bath, vaporizer or spritzer, the relaxing yet uplifting qualities make it an ideal choice. It has been known to be the best oil for workaholics and obsessive perfectionists, so again placing a few drops in a vaporizer by the computer or in the office can also bring a sense of calm, balance and perspective. Not too dissimilar from Lavender, if Geranium had a personality it would be described as a mother – a person who is nurturing and always ready to take care of someone! This beautiful floral aroma gives a sense of security and stability. It is said to be balancing, stabilising, regulating and comforting. Geranium contains geraniol making it strongly anti-viral and due to its high

ester content it is also considered an excellent anti-fungal oil. Geranium has excellent healing, astringent and homeostatic properties which is why it is used in compresses and massage blends to treat wounds and bruises. It has anti-inflammatory properties making it excellent in skincare. And it has antiseptic and cytophalactic (cell regenerating) qualities for the treatment of burns and skin conditions. You can add three drops to a teaspoon of coconut oil and apply to the affected area three times per day. It is however, recommended to be avoided topically on hypersensitive skin. One drop of this green leafyrose scented aroma added to your moisturiser can have a wonderful balancing action on the skin’s sebum. This can be particularly helpful for dry, oily and combination skin. From soaps through to moisturisers, detergents and perfumes, Geranium has been used throughout history for its fragrance and to promote beautiful radiant skin. Combined with jojoba

Geranium oil, it is excellent in helping to reduce wrinkles. adly in this country, Australia, like most countries around the world allows chemicals to be used in cosmetics (skin, hair, beauty, oral, baby and personal care products) until such time as they are PROVEN UNSAFE. Unfortunately it can literally take generations to determine if a chemical is or isn’t safe as identifying which chemicals are in fact dangerous when so many are combined together (sometimes thousands) in any given formulation, is extremely difficult. I believe we are now seeing the results of these mostly untested chemicals in the alarming rate of illness society is now experiencing. So what does that all mean for us? What that means for us and for most people around the world is that the mostly man-made petroleum-based chemicals as well as lots of the plantbased ingredients that use chemicals for processing those ingredients, have never been tested for safety

in cosmetics. In fact according to the EWG, of the 10,500 chemicals commonly used in cosmetics, skin, hair, beauty, oral and personal care products, only 13% have ever been tested for safety over the last 30 years, and when and if those chemicals are tested, they are tested in isolation and anyone who knows anything about chemistry knows that if you test a chemical individually, you will have a totally different outcome than when testing with other chemicals (all cosmetics, skin, hair, oral, baby and personal care products contain more than one chemical!) We need to adopt a similar approach to the “Reach Program” in Europe where chemicals are now not permitted to be used in cosmetics, skin, hair, beauty, oral, baby and personal care products until they have been proven to be safe. Most chemicals used are either carcinogenic, neuro, immuno toxic and toxic to the reproductive system.

The cosmetics industry (including all categories mentioned above) is selfregulating, i.e., the very people who make the cosmetics, skin, hair, beauty, oral, baby and personal care products are the ones who deem whether the products are safe. Only certified organic guarantees consumers of purity, certified organic plant-based ingredients (processed without the use of dangerous chemicals) – regulated by the certifying body. Even the packaging material has strict regulatory requirements. Transforming this will only occur when we choose it to and I personally believe it will be women who will lead this change. o you visit your dentist only every 14 years? One year in a dog’s life is said to be the equivalent of seven human years. An annual check-up at the vets would mean a broken tooth would be sore and infected for too long. This would be the same as checking your teeth every 14 years! Even six-monthly check-ups are too sporadic in difficult cases of periodontitis. Dental disease is the most common health problem affecting 80% of dogs and cats over the age of three years. It consists of periodontal disease with gingivitis (swollen, red and bleeding gums) caused by plaque and calculus (tartar), infected bone and also broken teeth. Much of these diseases can be prevented by providing them with oral mucosal health: a natural diet which provides mildly cleansing, slightly abrasive food, and is nutritionally complete in antioxidants, vitamins, good fats and oils which are anti-inflammatory. HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR PET NEEDS A DENTIST? This can be difficult for owners who

are not used to looking in their pet’s mouth. We advise you to bring your pet to a veterinary dental practice for an annual check-up. There may be no signs externally that you are aware of, such as in this case included here. This picture is of a surgical extraction of a fractured upper premolar 4th tooth – this is the one that is commonly fractured in mature dogs when they bite down on hard objects (shafts of bone, sticks, rocks). This tooth has three deep roots which must be sectioned from the crown and removed separately. Please note there is a swab with ties around the endotracheal tube. Most animals with sore mouths are not candidates for allowing their carers to brush their teeth! your pet’s teeth! brushing in its healthy mouth. It is pleasurable for the animal to have a clean mouth and most pets will look forward to their tooth brushing time, requiring very little persuasion. 1. Be regular. Practise the brushing technique several times a day until the pet is conditioned to the positive response. After the pattern has been formed, and the job learnt, once or twice daily brushing is necessary. It is important to set up a routine. 2. Begin slowly with only one or two teeth, or even starting with the pet licking the toothpaste off the brush or finger stall. Repeat often in the day, about six times daily for the first two weeks. 3. Reward. End positively with praise. Praise lavishly. Use tasty food rewards liberally, liver Jerky snacks, paté, freshly cooked chook pieces, cheese. 4. Make an associated location, eg. on top of the washing machine. We refer to this as, “set the stage”. Use an associated word with praise, eg “ toothtime” and lots of pats, treats “good tooth-time” in the higher pitched happier voice. 5. Use a finger stall brush with

pleasant tasting toothpaste for animals – human ones ‘burn’ the mouth, are unpalatable for pets, and are meant to be rinsed out, not swallowed. 6. Graduate to a small head toothbrush to reach the distal teeth surfaces after 2-3 weeks. 7. It may not be necessary to open the mouth, often only the lateral (buccal) areas require brushing, and the gingivabuccal aspect of the canine and lateral incisor teeth. 8. Rotary/ motorised (electric) toothbrushes save time and do an excellent job once the pet is trained to accept this. Choose a small headed electric toothbrush, rinse/soak the head in a chlorhex solution after brushing. Plaque comes back! Tooth brushing to remove plaque is best achieved twice daily. Plaque becomes mineralised within 48 hours after the plaque is laid down, and this becomes calculus. The snowball effect continues until the hard calcareous deposits are layered on.

Your tooth brushing efforts need to be evaluated and praised. This is true in any training of a new technique, or the motivation to better their efforts will wane. Looking after your pet is a taught and learned behaviour, many nuances and slight changes in body positioning, tonality of voice and calming techniques help in “obedience” training. Teaching a dog to accept tooth brushing is no different than teaching a dog to sit. Approximate, set the stage, reward, repeat. Did you know that thyroid disease is becoming increasingly common, particularly in Australia? It could be the result of many factors, such as an overwhelming stress load, chemical overload, increased autoimmune risk, or the depleted nutrient content in the soil our food grows in. Both selenium and iodine are low in many locations of Australian soil, both are important for optimal thyroid function. Both an over and under active thyroid can influence weight, infertility, mood, sleep, libido and menstrual problems.

Your digestive system is like the root system of a tree, when the roots are healthy the tree is healthy. Did you know the digestive system is in fact a nervous system? It is called the Enteric Nervous System. This system has a huge role in the production of your brain’s happy chemicals, not to mention the huge role that it plays in absorbing nutrients for everyday bodily functions. Certain bacterias in the gut have the potential to produce an enzyme called Beta glucuronidase, this enzyme can increase oestrogen recirculation. This may lead to oestrogen dominance. This imbalance can be linked to painful periods, PCOS, PMS, breast tenderness, irritability, weight gain, depression, skin conditions, fluid retention and lethargy.

Much of the standard thyroid testing measures TSH, when in fact to truly diagnose a thyroid problem, the tests require more detail. T3 and T4 are the thyroid hormones that your body uses, so it is best to get those checked too.

Are you stressed and fatigued? Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. Its role is to help regulate our response to normal levels of physical and psychological stress. Clinically we frequently see cortisol levels either too high or too low. High cortisol is often seen in the acute stages of stress, however, when the stress response is activated too frequently the adrenals can fatigue and produce too little cortisol. Imbalanced cortisol levels are often seen in those suffering with unexplained fatigue, disturbed sleeping patterns, blood sugar level imbalance, increased fat mass, blood pressure issues, brain fog and altered mental performance.

What about Pyroluria? Pyroluria is a genetically determined metabolic condition. Those with elevated pyrroles usually have an increased demand for certain nutrients that are essential for neurotransmitter production, such as serotonin and dopamine.
