RELATIONSHIPS, PARENTING AND KIDS

Parents, are you giving yourself a WORDS AMANDA TUNNEY

s a Holistic Counsellor specialising in family wellbeing it is often my privilege to work with parents and children to try and create a more harmonious and bonded home environment. Parents experience so many stages within the family environment, the carefree period prior to having children, the newborn snuggles when parents welcome a baby into their home, the sometimes exhausting period spent with a beautiful and energetic toddler and then everything in between leading up to the teenage years. While each and every stage brings its own rewards and challenges, I have found that the teenage years can be one of the most challenging times. Often parents will talk about the lack of communication they are experiencing with their teen, after all in 2015 it is quite possible for your teenager to text, post and tumble you out of their life. Don’t worry, there are many ways to stay connected with your teen during

these years. One of the first steps to maintaining, or building, a strong relationship is to recognise your teen is not you, she/he may have some of your traits and characteristics (of course some of your genetic input) but this wonderful blossoming teen is a person in their own right. This amazing creature that you helped to create is an individual with his/her own thoughts, beliefs and opinions… and this is great! If you have helped mould and sculpt this masterpiece that is comfortable in expressing belief systems then you have done an amazing job, have you got that? Let’s just emphasise that point, if your teen has a belief system and they are confident in expressing that belief system then you have done an AMAZING job as a parent. At this point many of you will probably be wondering what your teen’s belief system is, what morals and ethics are forming in your teen’s mind? So let’s start the conversation by

taking a look at the stories that are trending at the moment. One of the most popular stories in the media which teens currently relate to is the possibility of marriage equality in Australia. This is a great conversation to have as it crosses many sectors, what does your teen think of same sex marriage? Does your teen believe this is a decision that should be made by politicians? Does your teen believe that religion has a bearing on this decision? By starting these important conversations you are not only staying connected with your teen, you are also getting a unique insight into their mind and how amazing is that?! Why not start the conversation tonight? I would love to hear how it goes. AMANDA is a Holistic Counsellor, Hypnotherapist, Health Coach and Best Selling Author specialising in Holistic Family Health.
