COACH SELLERS

PE Coach Jason Sellers has gained more than he ever expected out of nearly 20 years at Fox Run Elementary School. The relationships with his students and colleagues drive him to be his best every day. But the sense of community and belonging helped him realize his job was really his calling.

The Fox Trot 5K is the perfect example of community and purpose colliding. This event originated from a grant from the San Antonio Spurs’ Silver & Black Give Back Team Up Challenge. This three-year project has become a tradition, now eight years running, with a food drive, vendors and more than 200 students, parents and community members in attendance.

“The community just loves it and I think it’s important for families to get involved in their schools,” said Sellers. “The more we get them on campus, it grows our school, and they have a better understanding of what we do day in and day out.”

The Fox Trot 5K reunited Sellers with former students now at Wood or Harris Middle School and Madison High School. That sense of community and reminder of the power of relationships keep him rooted at Fox Run. Students in his first kindergarten class are now seniors at Madison this year. It means a lot when students still remember those life lessons learned in the gym with Coach Sellers.

“PE is all about figuring out what to do when things don’t go the way you wanted it to. Of course, we encourage them to be active, eat healthy and get plenty of sleep. I always tell them, ‘I want you to have a healthy body and a healthy mind.’ We learn how to work with others and how to win and how to lose. To see where they started with me and where they are now so many years later keeps me coming back. I find so much enjoyment in my job and I’m getting paid to do something I love.”

Thank you, Coach Sellers, for all of the life lessons learned in the gym #theNEISDway. #rootedfoxrun

“Being a positive role model – that’s why I’m here. I feel called to be here at Fox Run.”

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT FROM OAK MEADOW, JACKSON AND CHURCHILL TO THE FAST TRACK: TRENTON ESTEP

#NEISDAlumni -- Trenton Estep had a professional racing career before he even graduated from Churchill High School.

Racing isn’t just his passion – it’s his life. Before he competed against some of the top drivers on tracks around the world, he was a North East ISD student. Trenton went to Oak Meadow Elementary School, Jackson Middle School and Churchill, where he graduated in 2018.

“Since graduation I have won the North American Championship with Porsche, the 12 hour of Abu Dhabi with Ferrari, and multiple race wins in Porsche Carrera Cup North America I'm lucky enough now that my job consists of 35 race weekends a year and over 140 days traveling around the globe ” Trenton sacrificed a lot to pursue his dreams. A demanding training and competition schedule sometimes meant missing class or turning in assignments late. That wasn’t an obstacle at NEISD. In fact, his teachers worked with and supported him during a pivotal time in his life. He’ll never forget the Churchill teacher who showed up at one of his races.

“Mrs. Diana Knauth from Churchill High School taught Spanish. She was one of the teachers that helped me the most with my schoolwork. She would give me extensions and help me get assignments even If I was in another country. She would even help me with other schoolwork like math when I was in her class. She is extra special to me because she is one of the only teachers that came to a race of mine. I had a race in Austin that she drove up to come watch and support.”

Trenton got his start by racing go-karts and it quickly turned into a serious career opportunity at a very young age. Looking back, he can see what a challenge it was just to juggle schoolwork and a professional racing career He’s thankful that his teachers chose to support him and his dreams, even when that meant working around his demanding schedule

“One way NEISD really helped me was with working with my schedule. NEISD had some pretty amazing teachers really who helped me learn as much as I could. Without them, I wouldn't have been able to participate in some races and may not have been able to get the results necessary to move forward in racing. With their trust, I was allowed to prepare for the life I have been fortunate enough to live.”

Big or small, we all have a story to tell. If you are an NEISD alumni, we want to hear yours.
