STAY IN YOUR LANE (COVE)

THE CANOPY is open, the aquatic centre is complete, and backyard barbecues are being scrubbed clean in readiness for outdoor entertaining. While the general state of Rita Bratovich affairs keeps see-sawing, our need for good a quality of life remains constant and we’ve discovered that the key to that is simplicity. Lane Cove is like a mini-metropolis. Virtually everything you need is just past the front gate (and these days, much of what you need is available virtually). There’s the new shopping, entertainment and community hub right in the centre of town with its cluster of eateries and bars; the world-class facilities at Lane Cove Aquatic Centre; lots of artistic outlets; the river and bushland and the great activities they afford. Just because you have to stay put, it doesn’t mean you have to stand still. * In this issue we take a kayaking trip along the Lane Cove River. We delve deeper into the district’s past. We get some handy hot weather tips for our pets and tips on how to entertain without the strain. We feature some very creative locals, a nearby holiday destination, a home-made jam with a kick, and a chef with a recipe for happiness. All this and more just waiting for you to turn the page…

[*Of course you should observe the relevant current NSW Health restrictions, maintain social distancing and wear a mask.]

HISTORY

BLOOD By Alec Smart

F

At the end of the 18th century, British colonists crossed the harbour from their Sydney Cove settlement and began harvesting timber around the lower reaches of the Lane Cove River – which the Indigenous Cammeraygal people knew as Turrumburra. FOR millennia the Cammeraygal resided in sandstone caves and bark humpies across Lane Cove’s five ‘fingers’ - the peninsulas now known as Linley Point, Riverview, Longueville, Northwood and Greenwich - in close proximity to the seafood they gathered along the shoreline or caught in the tidal waters. Over 40 Aboriginal sites have been recorded in Lane Cove National Park, including axe-sharpening grooves in rocks, assorted shelters, shell middens, cave art and rock engravings. Unfortunately, the British settlers’ encampments and (from 1794) land grants inevitably drew them into conflict with the natives as they competed for resources. Eucalypts – blackbutt, bluegum and stringybark – and hardwoods including red mahogany and yanderra (turpentine) were felled by the new arrivals for the construction of boats, furniture, fencing and houses. In the freshwater estuaries feeding the river, grasses were cut for roofing thatch and animal fodder. Shells gathered from centuries-old Aboriginal middens were burned to produce lime for mortar used in construction. Burns Bay Road in Linley Point began as a bullock cart route to enable former convict William Henry to transport timber from his 1000-acre forest leasehold to boats on the river. Tragically, a 1789-90 outbreak of smallpox decimated the Indigenous populations around the Sydney basin.

04

In 1790 a military fort was constructed at Woodford Bay, occupied by a garrison of marines, and for the next three decades they waged war on the remaining Aborigines, including Pemulwuy, the fearless resistance leader thought immune to bullets. In 1797 the Secretary of the Colony recorded that Aborigines were ‘exceedingly troublesome to the settlers in the Lane Cove area.’ In April 1816, the autocratic Governor Lachlan Macquarie, infuriated by the growing Indigenous resistance to European settlements expanding out from Sydney Cove, ordered a 23day military mission to resolve the issue. His soldiers were instructed to capture any Aboriginal peoples they encountered, from Lane Cove west to the Nepean and Hawkesbury rivers, and shoot dead all resisters. This resulted in at least one recorded massacre. Thereafter, British business interests in the Lane Cove region expanded rapidly, with the arrival of dairy farms, orchards and piggeries, after the forests were cleared. Roads soon traversed the steep ridges down to the waterfront wharves, enabling easy transportation of goods to Sydney town. In 1831, the headland of Longueville (which wasn’t named until 1924), became the site of one of Australia’s first manufacturing industries with the production plant for Rupert Kirk’s soap and candles.

Join our community @ Kirk named the area Woodford Park and also attempted to grow tobacco and grapes, without success. (Rupert Kirk was not related to Scottish industrialist James S Kirk, who, coincidentally, in 1839, founded the American brand Kirk’s Soap in New York, still in production today.) In 1851, Ludowici and Radke relocated their abattoir and tannery from Balmain to the stream flowing into Burns Bay – now known as Tannery Creek. 1861 saw their partnership divide and set up either side of the creek, with Ludowici eventually “BRITISH BUSINESS INTERESTS buying out Radke, his company IN THE LANE COVE REGION continuing for another century. EXPANDED RAPIDLY, WITH THE Rich clays suitable for making drinking vessels and ARRIVAL OF DAIRY FARMS, storage containers attracted ORCHARDS AND PIGGERIES, potters, and the Phoenix Pottery Company was founded AFTER THE FORESTS WERE CLEARED. in 1883, followed in 1886 by ROADS SOON TRAVERSED THE the Sydney Pottery Company, STEEP RIDGES DOWN both sourcing their clay from Gore Creek. TO THE WATERFRONT” Pottery Green Oval now commemorates this thriving industry. In 1894, the Chicago Starch Mills opened, and produced starch and cornflour on a site previously used as a boiling-down work near Stringybark Creek in North Lane Cove. The processing plant was finally closed and sold in Jan 2020 by its latest owner, US-based global starch and sweetener producer, Ingredion.

KAYAKING ADVENTURE

ALONG LANE COVE RIVER

T

THE indigenous Cammeraygal people called the area where the two rivers met ‘Mookaboola’, which literally means ‘meeting of waters’, while Lane Cove River was known to them as Turrumburra (or Turranburra). Covering a catchment area of around 95 square kilometres, Lane Cove River is separated by a weir mid-way near Fullers Bridge. Its narrow, freshwater upper reaches lie within the forested Lane Cove National Park, while the lower section is a tidal estuary characterised by mangroves and oyster-covered rocks between private wharves and waterfront properties. Seen on a map, the four peninsulas that make up the lower region of the 2066 postcode, around which the river flows west to east – Linley Point, Riverview, Longueville, Northwood – could be described as four ‘fingers’ (albeit taking into account those fingers would be lopped off at the first knuckle!). With a friend I set out to explore the bays characterising the aforementioned four fingers, paddling downstream on kayaks. We dropped into the dark green river at Cunningham’s Reach on Linley Point, where there is convenient waterside parking accessible from Burns Bay Road, and stone steps descending into the water. The tide was out, and as we paddled beneath Fig Tree Bridge we came upon a sandbank where a pelican sun-baked beside a few squawking seagulls. Adjacent to the bridge, in Hunters Hill to the south, is historic Fig Tree House, an attractive yellow timber and stone cottage

08

The 2066 postcode region is dominated by the Lane Cove River that flows 15km from a confluence of creeks, snaking its way south into coves and bays before joining Parramatta River on the western edge of Sydney Harbour.

built in 1836 by successful businesswoman Mary Reiby. Mary, whose portrait appears on one side of the orange $20 note, was an English-born merchant and shipowner. However, she originally arrived in chains among the Fourth Fleet of convicts on the Royal Admiral in 1792, after she was sentenced to seven years transportation for stealing a horse. To enter Burns Bay, we paddled around Linley Point, one of Sydney’s smallest suburbs, which has only 131 houses, including heritage-listed Linley House (now a privately-owned B&B), and Carisbrook (now a museum of life in the 1880s). In the 1860s this area was utilised as an abattoir by the Ludowici and Radke tanneries, where no doubt the blood from slaughtered stock washed into the cove to feed hungry sharks. Riverview, the peninsula to the east of Burns Bay, is dominated by the playing fields and buildings of St Ignatius, a boys-only Jesuit school. On the shoreline at the tip of Riverview is a small two-tone pagoda with an Indian-style domed roof, in which newly-married couples often pose for romantic clinches after they’ve tied the knot. Tambourine Bay, between the peninsulas of Riverview and Longueville, was a popular fishing cove for the Cammeraygal, who used multi-pronged fishing spears (which British colonists called ‘fizz-gigs’), nets woven from tree fibres, and hooks carved from bones. Fishing was done from rock platforms or bark canoes; fires were often lit on stone slabs in the canoes where fish were cooked fresh as soon as they were pulled from the water.

Join our community @ There used to be a tidal swimming pool in Tambourine Bay, built circa 1930 and mainly used by St Ignatius students for swimming tournaments and training, but it was demolished in 2015. As we followed Longueville peninsula around into Woodford Bay, we observed caves set into the overhanging sandstone strata, where the Cammeraygal people lived along the shoreline in close proximity to the seafood on which they thrived. Foreign-introduced diseases, primarily smallpox, decimated the Cammeraygal peoples. Thereafter, most of their rock shelters were destroyed by European settlers, who blasted and ground down the stone to extract phosphates for fertiliser, as the Sydney soil was too poor for European agriculture. Woodford Bay, between Longueville and Northwood, is densely packed with anchored yachts. Woodford Bay Bicentennial Reserve on the Longueville side features a sea pool with a walkway along one edge. It is staked with timber fencing to shark-proof the enclosure (although some of those wooden bars are missing with gaps wide enough for a hungry bull shark to swim through!). Woodford Bay is where a military stockade was built in 1790, during the time the European settlers began expanding north from their Sydney Cove settlement and encountered Aboriginal resistance during land clearance. A permanent garrison of soldiers here clashed with the Indigenous inhabitants, among them feared resistance leader Pemulway. The final part of our watery journey took us around Northwood, named after Northwood House, the first estate to be built on the headland in 1878. After owner Jane Davys’ death in 1903, it was sold to Abdul Wade, a camel breeder from Bourke who kept his camels on the grounds before losing the house in a poker game.

Gore Creek, between Northwood and Greenwich, is a small inlet that features more mangroves than waterfront properties. It is the last cove before the Lane Cove River flows out between the Woolwich and Greenwich peninsulas into Parramatta River. Then we undertook the long paddle back to Cunningham’s Reach.

HOME LIVING

HAVING your house closed up during winter may have kept out the cold but it also kept in stale air and mustiness. Now that it’s warm outside you can fling open the windows, but to help nature along why not burn some fragrant candles? Your olfactory nerves (that’s the industrial site inside your nose) are very sensitive and responsive to smell. They will identify and interpret a smell then send signals to other parts of the body which react accordingly: salivate if it’s a tasty aroma; wince if it’s pungent; smile if it stirs a pleasant memory; get up and move if it’s invigorating. One easy way to introduce a fresh, summery fragrance into your home is by burning scented candles. Soy candles are best as they are natural and contain no harmful substances. They also burn more slowly and therefore, longer. Palm Beach has a quality range of soy candles in delicious scents that will make your indoor space inviting and uplifting.

While Europe, particularly France and Norway, are aiming at having EVs (electric vehicles) and hybrids as the only new cars available by 2025, Australia seems reluctant to plug in to the technology. by Robert Everett

The natural bushland surrounding Lane Cove offers beauty and serenity, but it is also filled with danger, not the least being the threat of bushfire. As we approach the peak of fire season, here are some tips on how you can help reduce the risk to yourself and your home.

D

MAKE A PLAN

STAY INFORMED

DECIDE NOW what you will do if a fire threatens your home. You have two main options: stay and fight or leave. If you plan to stay and fight the fire, be sure you are well equipped to do so. Install heat-resistant hoses with wide-spray nozzles. Make sure you can reach every part of the house and that your water pressure is strong enough to be effective. It’s also advisable to have roof sprinklers and a pool pump. Educate yourself on how to fight a fire. Ensure that you are fit and healthy. Do not stay if you suffer from any condition that will be exacerbated by smoke, heat, stress or physical exertion. Ensure that your phone is charged and handy. Keep track of the fire’s progress and current alerts. Make sure someone knows where you are and how you are. It is extremely dangerous to leave once the fire is close, so think hard about whether you will stay and fight and only do so if you are prepared. If you plan to leave, then leave early. Have everything you need packed and ready at the first sign of any threat. Plan optional escape routes depending on the location of the fire. Know where you will go and inform someone that you have left your home and arrived safely elsewhere.

Clean leaves and debris from your roof and gutters. Clear any potential fire hazard and fuel from around your house and garden. Keep the lawn mowed and trim overgrown tree branches and bushes. Store flammable and incendiary items in a protected, cool environment. Replace old wooden fences and outdoor furniture with ones made of metal or fire-resistant materials. Pay attention to fire danger ratings in weather forecasts. Know the fire alert levels and what they mean.

Check websites and apps for fires near you, listen to ABC radio for official reports. Download the Fires Near Me NSW app.

KIDS LET THE KIDS

T

For ten years, Lane Cove Bush Kids has been teaching young children how to understand and appreciate the life and leaf of their natural environment.

THE Lane Cove Bushland and Conservation Society was originally established to help protect the beautiful flora and fauna in the area from the ravages of urban development and neglect, as well as to share knowledge and encourage interaction with the bush and its creatures. Three Society members, who were also mothers of young children, got together in 2010 to establish a bush care program for children. Bushkids was an instant success and many young bush-lovers discovered the wonders of their native surrounds and learned how to keep them wonderful. The program was expanded in 2016 when the Society teamed up with Lane Cove Council. It is now one of the most popular activities for young children in Lane Cove. Bush-lovers as young as 2 and up to 10 years old can join a session and get close and personal with cicadas, beetles, tadpoles, or butterflies. They can engage their senses and discover the scents, textures, sounds, colours (but perhaps not flavours!)

GO WILD

of the bush. Bushkids is a beautiful bonding experience for children, and between children and the adults who accompany them. It is also a way to engender an appreciation and respect for the natural environment from a young age. Programs such as this help build pride in community as well as confidence in young individuals. Kids have a natural instinct to be creative and they’re not afraid to experiment. So what could be better than channeling that imaginative energy into art?

CHILDREN love to use their hands to shape and mould; they love discovering shapes and colours and seeing their imagination realised on a page or in a sculpture. That’s why the children’s art classes at Gallery Lane Cove + Creative Studios are so popular and such a good idea. Most courses last from 7 to 9 weeks, one afternoon a week, and are aimed at kids aged 5 to 12 (some allow older kids). They cover an exciting selection of disciplines including art, craft, art history, creating with clay, machine sewing, puppets, and painting. Kids don’t only learn technical skills, but also how to follow instructions, invent and experiment and turn their inspiration into a creation. They watch and encourage and are motivated by the other children in the course. Art is very rewarding and a wonderful way to stimulate imagination and learning. And handmade artworks make great gifts!

FOOD

Guillaume Le Gal is the genius in the kitchen at famed Lane Cove restaurant, Garcon. He tells Neighbourhood media about his life and love of food. garcon.com.au

LET’S start with a little story of my life. I grew up in France - Brittany - on the west coast. My father was a fisherman, retired now. I eat so much fish and seafood, so many family meals where you stay five hours at the table without a smartphone! After high school I didn’t really know what to do, like many young people. I start a degree of hospitality hotel management; I was one of the worst at cooking but I loved it. After my degree I worked six months in France and packed my bag to go to England for a year. I couldn’t speak a word. Every morning before work I was going to the supermarket with my little notebook to learn more vocabulary. Then I move to New Zealand for one year, travelling and doing different job, fruit picking, kitchen hand, chef. I work for six months for Danger Sohnke, a German chef who was awarded the best restaurant in Taranaki. I left New Zealand to Australia on the Gold Coast with $800 in my pocket. I find a job in 3 days with a French chef who used to be a Michelin star in Belgium. It was hard, long hours but so much to learn. Then I left to Sydney. I work in Bondi for a couple of years, starting a sponsorship. I transfer my sponsor for my first position of head chef at Bitton Gourmet - I was 25 years old. I work almost four years there; during this time I participate in a couple of cooking competitions including chef of the year Australia 2018. When I finished my sponsorship I wanted to learn more about Asian cuisine, I worked at Mr Wong. I did an opening with my Indonesian friend at Auvers Dining in Darling Square. After that I wanted to focus again on my French cooking background and start at Garcon five months ago. We open a new restaurant in Lane Cove trying to create a French menu with seasonal product; food you share with friends and family, humble food, done with French techniques without shortcut, with love and memories from my childhood, twisting it a bit. Like the stuffed mussels I used to do every Sunday - I just change it, adding some sambal to spice it up. I believe food is sharing and creating memories around the table. We don’t spend enough time talking and eating good fresh local produce in our busy city life.

SUMMER IN A GLASS

W

WITH one sip, a good cocktail will transport you to a tropical island where you lay in a hammock suspended between two palm trees, a salty, cool breeze blowing through the fronds. There are some keys to creating the perfect cocktail and we’ve included some here, as well as a selection of drinks from menus around The Canopy.

Follow the recipe.

Don’t be tempted to free-hand it. It’s like making a cake - you have to get the measurements right and add things in the right order.

Chill the glass first.

A cool receptacle will keep your refreshing, icy drink refreshingly icy for longer.

SUNSET DINER

Sunset Soda

Gin, grapefruit, limoncello, fino sherry

LILLAH MIDDLE EASTERN

The Passion Queen Gin, homemade passion fruit cordial, citrus, fresh parsley & ginger beer

LITTLE RED ROBIN:

Royal-Tea

PERSIAN BASEMENT

Archie Rose Dry Gin / Belsazar Rose Vermouth / Peach Liqueur / Earl Grey Tea

PERSIAN BASEMENT

Be artistic.

The alcohol in your cocktail should be a brand you’d happily drink straight. Same goes with the other ingredients - use fresh fruit, real juices, good mixers.

Use quality ingredients.

Presentation is particularly important for a cocktail. Use fresh, nicely shaped garnish, try layers and patterns with the liquids, get some funky swizzle sticks, parasols, cute ornaments, metal straws.

Get the accoutrements.

A basic toolkit includes a jigger, shaker, strainer, bar spoon, and muddler, but, like everything else, you can just keep adding gadgets and gizmos. A selection of glasses would be ideal.

A

ALREADY popular in Avalon after being open for a mere couple of years, Sunset Diner is bringing its American style diner to Lane Cove. With warm pastel tones, simple, clean lines, and vintage-styled fittings and furniture, Sunset Diner offers a tweaked traditional diner menu with a side of nostalgia. Their burgers are bulky and filled with good stuff. They offer a wide selection of classic burgers including their own “The Burger” with truffle parmesan fries; and their Chicken Katsu burger with a side of broccoli bites. Or you can opt for a fresh salad with optional extras like

seared tuna or crispy chicken. Delicious griddle dogs, tasty sides and snacks, and desserts that’ll stick to your bones. Any day is perfect for a delicious sundae or big frothing shakes - you gotta get whipped cream and a cherry on top! Easy kids menu with all their favourites. Meanwhile, the grown-ups can sit on a stool at the bar and sip beer, wine, or one the amazing Sunset cocktails. Good food and great vibe.

THE PROOF IS IN THE JAM

During the COVID lockdowns, a lot of people took up hobbies. For some it was a way to fill in the hours, but for others like Frosene Agathokleous that hobby became a new business.

W

WHEN you first taste Tipsy Jam you are delighted and intrigued. It’s delicious, but there’s something else, a special zing. The mystery ends when you read the ingredients. Take the Strawberry Margarita Jam, for instance: strawberries, sugar, lemon juice, pectin, tequila…say what? Yes, that’s right - these jams are alcohol infused. “I have always loved being in the kitchen and experimenting with different flavours,” explains Frosene. “I wanted to add a quirky twist to regular jams, so I started experimenting with alcohol infusions!” Frosene had already been making jams and preserves as a hobby before the pandemic hit. Being in lockdown with lots of time and creativity on her hands gave her the opportunity to turn her home-made jam into a viable product. Tipsy Jam comes in a number of tantalising flavours and is perfect for grazing platters. Frosene also makes up gorgeous gift boxes that may include jam, wine, chocolates, candles, and… another jar of jam? It’s still a home-based start-up but you can order via Instagram:

For a town that sits beside a river, Lane Cove has very few seafood restaurants. However, if you’ve got a hankering for the salty taste of ocean wildlife, here are a couple of places that will satisfy that desire. POSEIDON’S CATCH

S

SELLING both fresh and cooked seafood, this is a great beachside-style, on-the-street, fish and chips and other tasty seafood shop. A Local Business Award winner, they sell all your favourites in simple, fresh, delicious meals. Firm bright orange prawns, fresh fish, tender calamari, thick fluffy fries. Great for a quick fix or economical lunch/dinner. Shop 6, 225 Burns Bay Rd, Lane Cove

FOURTH FISH CAFE AND RESTAURANT

This is sit-down dining. It’s a nice eat-in experience with indoor and outdoor areas and they’ve bought into the whole nautical decor concept hook, line, and sinker (‘scuse the pun). The unusual name is derived from the chef’s desire to create four new specials each month. The varied menu includes oysters, prawns, soft-shelled crab, octopus, mussels and other delights for entree/ share plates, and several fish species for main. If you’re with a non-seafood lover, the restaurant also offers beef, pork and chicken alternatives. Shop 1/12-16 Burns Bay Road, Lane Cove

LANE COVE SUSHI BAR This is definitely the kind of place you go to with a group of people because you’ll want to be able to order lots of different dishes. The sushi platters look amazing and are presented really nicely. They offer a great selection of sushi and sashimi, bento boxes, tempura, Japanese salads, interesting entrees, and mains served with rice. Plus udon, ramen and authentic Japanese beer. 122 Longueville Rd, Lane Cove

GUS

WINSTON AND BETTY COCKER

WINSTON and Betty are 2 cockers with attitude from Lane Cove. Betty, the blue roan cocker, is 12 and a bit of a grumpy old woman. She loves her ball and toys, but is not too keen on Winston! Winston, the golden cocker, is 2 and still full of puppy energy! He also loves his ball and is forever trying to steal Betty’s! He is very sociable and loves going to daycare once a week at Bloomingtails to meet and play with all his friends. Winston and Betty host the quarterly #sydneycockermeetup in Centennial Park and you can catch up with their daily exploits on Instagram @winstonandbettycocker

YOURNEIGHBOURHOODMEDIA

GUS is 6yrs old. He had his birthday on the 1st December. He is a black and tan Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. He is very loving and laid back and is a great companion dog. Because he is lazy and loves sleeping he is also the perfect apartment dog. Gus’s all time favourite place - I call it his happy place - is Tambourine Bay Park, Riverview. Another favourite place in summer is the little beach next to Lane Cove Rowing club, Aquatic Park Longueville. I remember being up at the plaza and hearing a neighbour introduce Gus to her friends as: “This is Gus. He lives in my building.” I just stood there. At that stage, after moving into the new Botanic building, we did not know each other’s names. Many people know Gus and call out hello to him as we walk past. He is like a little celebrity as many of the shopkeepers, bank staff etc. know him and give him treats. Our favourite things to do together is to go to one of the many excellent Lane Cove cafes or restaurants in the plaza or the Canopy and relax, read the paper and people/ dog watch.

Students begin study at a level that allows them to build self-confidence from day one, and progress according to their ability rather than their age. Over time, our students develop the study habits, attitude and skills that will allow them to study advanced material confidently and independently. Kumon has operated in Lane Cove for over 30 years, and is run by local mum (and ex-Kumon Student) Sheryl Lee. Families can study with us in person, online, or via correspondence – choose the system that suits your family best! Find out more about the Kumon Method of Learning by watching our introductory video (https://au.kumonglobal. com/kumon-a-foundation-for-the-future/) or booking an Orientation Meeting via hello@kumonlanecove.com.
