Summer’s arrival brings not just sunny days, but also thunderstorms and fireworks. Explosive sounds, including booms echoing from Quanti co, can easily turn your typically calm pet into a panting, drooling, nervous wreck. Here are a few integrative techniques you can use to keep your furry friend calm during these stressful events.

Create a Safe Space

Create a designated quiet and cozy haven indoors where your pet can retreat during loud events, ideally away from windows and external walls to minimize noise. Provide their favorite bedding and toys for comfort, and play calm ing music or white noise to further drown out the booms. Remember, your pet can sense your anxiety, so it’s important to stay calm yourself.

Try a Thundershirt

Invest in a Thundershirt – these swaddling garments ap ply gentle, constant pressure to your pet’s body, which can have a calming effect.

Use Acupressure Points for Calming

Acupressure, akin to acupuncture, can be applied to help soothe your pet Gently press and massage each point with your thumb in a circular motion for about 1-2 minutes. Here are three points to focus on:

GV 20: On top of the head, directly in the middle between the ears.

An-shen (Calm Spirit): A pair of points - Behind the head in the depression at the back of each ear base.

PC 6: On the inside of the front leg, 1/3 of the way up from the wrist.

Work on Desensitization

Gradually expose your pet to recorded sounds of loud noises, thunderstorms, or fireworks at a very low volume, rewarding them for staying calm. Slowly increase the vol ume over time.

Consider Calming Treats/Supplements

There are numerous brands of calming treats on the market, most containing natural ingredients formulated to decrease anxiety. CBD has also gained popularity for its potential to reduce anxiety. Always consult your veterinarian before introducing any new supplement to ensure it’s appropriate for your pet.

THE GILASON FAMILY: Building a Life of Love, Community, and Dance

The Gilason family is full of life and energy. Residing in Stafford, Virginia with Amy and Nick Gilason at the helm, their household buzzes with the energy of their four boys—Brayden, 13, identical twins Carter and Colten, 11, and Rory, 9. Together, they navigate the complexities of daily life, balancing careers, school activities, and community involvement while fostering a deep sense of family and togetherness.

High School Sweethearts Turned Lifelong Partners

Amy and Nick’s journey together began in high school. “We started dating my junior year; he was a senior,” Amy recalled. Their first memorable encounter involved a humorous mishap: “Our first flirt or encounter was at a friend’s house, and we accidentally ripped a page out of the phone book looking for the phone number to Outback!” After dating for a decade, they married and embarked on a life filled with love and shared dreams.

Nick attended Virginia Tech and served in the Army Reserves, being called to active duty after 9/11 and spending a year in Kuwait. Upon returning, he pursued a passion for building homes, eventually opening Green Horizons Construction LLC, which has flourished for the past ten years. Amy’s academic path took her from local schools in Stafford to a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Finance from George Mason University and a Master’s Degree in Management and Leadership from Liberty University. She has dedicated over 16 years to her full-time role at Marine Corps University on Quantico Marine Corps Base.

Raising Four Active Boys

The Gilason boys are an enthusiastic team, too, with each son bringing their unique energy and interests to the family dynamic.

“All four boys are on a Stafford Soccer Travel team! Thankfully, the twins made the same team, but we still travel a lot for games,” Amy said. Brayden attends Rodney Thompson Middle School, where Carter and Colten will join next school year, while Rory will be the lone Gilason at Winding Creek Elementary.

“Math is definitely the boys’ best subject,” Amy said, “although Brayden is really enjoying Spanish this year.”

While Amy may have initially hoped for a daughter to share her passion for dance, she finds fulfillment in her role as the director and a teacher at The Dance Spot, the studio her mother, Susie Shoop, founded 28 years ago.

“I still love it after all these years, and yes, I still dance with the girls when I’m teaching, although I can’t do everything I used to be able to do when I was younger.”

Family Hobbies and Interests

Family time is precious to the Gilasons. They indulge in numerous hobbies and interests when not engaged in work or school activities. Amy is an avid reader, enjoying various genres.

“I read almost every night, something from the Bible and then a book of my choice,” she said. “I’m hoping I’ll rub off on the boys.”

Traveling, especially to the beach, is a shared passion as well. “The beach is my favorite, specifically Atlantis in the Bahamas, where my husband and I had our wedding, and the Outer Banks– it is just so peaceful!”

Through volunteer work, Nick and Amy also ensure their children experience a sense of community. The Dance Spot frequently participates in local performances, including the Stafford County Fair and various school and church events. “We always do the Stafford County Fair, and in the past, we’ve done some performances at local schools, churches, and the Stafford County and Quantico parades,” Amy explained.

Deep Roots in Stafford

Stafford has been home to the Gilason family for over 35 years.

“610 looked very different back then,” Amy recalled, but the sense of belonging and the strong community ties remain the same. Having close family nearby as well has been crucial to their lives.

“Stafford is my home, and the studio has always been a huge part of my life,” said Amy, who has also enjoyed the proximity to family here in Stafford. “My mom babysat my boys for me when I went to work, and she’s been a huge help in helping with childcare,” said Amy.

The Gilasons live on Woodlot Court, a street known for its close-knit community. Amy and two of her best friends, who live on the same street, share a unique bond.

“Between the three of us, we have ten kids that have all grown up together, and our husbands are also terrific friends,” Amy explained. “The FRAMILY is our tribe; we rely on each other daily for carpooling, grabbing something at the grocery store, having a quick hangout for a good laugh, traveling together, etc.”

The street comes alive in the warmer months, with children playing outside, moms chatting, and dads gathered around a fire pit.

Treasured Places and Family Adventures

The Gilasons love exploring local attractions, with downtown Fredericksburg being a favorite.

“We LOVE downtown Fredericksburg, being able to walk, shop, explore, and eat—it’s a great place to take the kids or enjoy a date night,” Amy said. Kings Dominion, the Paragon movie theater, and Sky Zone are popular with the boys. Recently, the family has enjoyed the convenience of the nearby Embrey Mill Town Center.

Vacationing is a cherished family activity, with frequent trips to the Outer Banks and annual visits to Disney World and Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg, VA.

A Life of Love, Community, and Dance

Balancing demanding careers, a bustling household, and a deep commitment to their community, the Gilason family finds joy in the everyday moments and the strong bonds they have built. Their story is a fantastic reminder that, with dedication, love, and support, a family can thrive and dance through life together, creating meaningful memories and a great sense of fulfillment. The Gilasons continue to inspire those around them, embodying the spirit of togetherness and community that defines Stafford.

“Atlantis in the Bahamas is a dream come true! We were married there and still love it,” Amy shared. These trips offer precious family time and the chance to create lasting memories.

Adventure Awaits IN OUR NATIONAL PARKS

We were ready for adventure! Our wanderlust had grown to epic proportions. The RV had snacks, blankets, clothes, games, and all the “things” for a fun-filled family vacation. We were headed for a destination of bliss to several of our nation’s breathtaking national parks. These are trips of a lifetime! Booking the campgrounds, packing, and making sure the kiddos are occupied is crucial. Then comes the tactical search for activities, perfect hikes, scenic drives, savory restaurants, and the perfect souvenir shops. So take it from someone who has experienced spending weeks on end with teens and young children in an RV to see some of the most beautiful sights on earth; it can be accomplished and enjoyed!

One truth about visiting our national parks is that there is so much to see and so little time. The National Park Service app was helpful in choosing sights and hikes with distances and degrees of difficulty. The app describes the national parks and provides photo galleries, activities, amenities, weather, and park fees. Being informed is critical, especially when encountering dangerous terrain and wildlife. Plan ahead and know what to pack for food, water, proper shoes, and clothing.

Our first exploration was to The Grand Canyon and Zion National Parks. We were unaware of the beauty we would encounter. While indulging in our hikes, we were awed by the splendor of copper sunsets, castles of painted sandstone, rainstorms that quenched dry sand, hidden pools of emerald, and hues of flowers that beamed from clefts of jolting rocks. As a family, we were transported to terrestrial wonderlands. Our next

stop on this journey was Bryce Canyon. We raced through the soul-freeing, scenic trails on a pack of four-wheelers. We were made alive with wind in our hair and sun dancing on the valleys!

We escaped to Yellowstone, The Grand Tetons, and Badlands National Parks this summer. While traversing The Grand Tetons, we soaked in snow-capped mountains, prolific evergreens, crystal streams, radiant blue skies, roaring rapids, and exquisite sunsets. Elk pranced in the meadows while we were immersed in the therapeutic mineral water of hot springs. In our stops, we were transported through time to neighboring Wild West towns and log-cabin diners.

As our voyage continued to Yellowstone, the land of a supervolcano, we entered the sci-fi dimensions of thermal vents, erupting geysers, mud volcanoes, turquoise pools, and rainbow hot springs. Wildlife was abundant and intriguing. Bison grazed, almost unaware of our close presence. The experience was magnificent! Moose, grizzlies, and wolves roam free while bald eagles soar above the mountaintops. Our final expedition was a sunset drive through the Badlands. While sitting around a campfire, I could only imagine what it must have been like to live during the days of the untamed West. Reflecting on traveling the world, little can be compared to the majestic beauty in our sixty-three national parks. What could be next on our list of national park adventures? Glacier and Olympic National Parks might be on the horizon. What is on your list? I encourage you to make this “bucket list” a near-future reality. Begin dreaming at https://www.nps.gov.

APEROL SPRITZ RECIPE: A Taste of Veneto at Home

Memories and Tips:

My first encounter with the Aperol Spritz was slightly bitter, but it quickly became a favorite. By the end of our stay in Italy, I found myself enjoying spritzes with our neighbors 2-3 times a week. We even had “Fanta Fridays” with our girls, where they enjoyed Fanta (which is essentially carbonated orange juice in Italy) while I savored my spritz. This tradition, accompanied by San Carlo potato chips, became a cherished part of our routine after school pick-up to start the weekend.

Living in Italy for almost three years was a delightful experience that introduced me to the joys of the Aperol Spritz. This vibrant and refreshing cocktail is a staple in the Veneto region, home to Prosecco Road, where Aperol and prosecco are both affordable and readily available. In our small town of Marola, on the outskirts of Vicenza, you could often find Aperol Spritzes for as little as €2,5 to €3, usually accompanied by a small snack like chips. Italians cherish their aperitivo time, a tradition akin to “Happy Hour” in America, but with a distinct cultural twist.

History of the Spritz

The spritz has a long and storied history in Italy, dating back to the 19th century when the Austrians ruled the Veneto region. Austrian soldiers found Italian wines too strong, so they began diluting them with a splash– or “spritz”– of water, most likely to be more like beer, creating the first version of the spritz. Over time, the spritz evolved, and Aperol, introduced in 1919 by the Barbieri brothers, became a popular ingredient. Today, the Aperol Spritz is synonymous with Italian aperitivo culture, a time for socializing and enjoying light drinks and snacks before dinner.

Aperol Spritz Recipe

The recipe for an Aperol Spritz is simple, yet it delivers a complex and delightful taste. You can customize it with different ingredients to suit your preferences. Here’s how to make it:

Ingredients:

3 parts prosecco

2 parts Aperol

1 part club soda or sparkling water

Ice cubes

Orange slice for garnish

Instructions:

Fill a large wine glass halfway with ice cubes.

Add 3 parts Prosecco.

Add 2 parts Aperol.

Add 1 part club soda or sparkling water. Stir gently to combine.

Garnish with an orange slice.

Serve immediately and enjoy.

Variations:

Limoncello Spritz: Substitute Aperol with limoncello for another citrusy twist. Campari Spritz: Substitute Campari for a more bitter and stronger drink.

Flavored Sparkling Water: Try using blood orange or other flavored sparkling waters for a unique taste.

Even now, back in the States, we continue to enjoy the Aperol Spritz, thanks to finding affordable prosecco from Valdobbiadene at Costco. Although I do miss paying only €11 for a liter of Aperol, I can still find it here for about $27-$30 and the Prosecco is only $7 at Costco.

So, next time you want to reminisce about Italian aperitivo and have a drink alongside some bruschetta or cicchetti, or you simply want to enjoy a refreshing cocktail, make yourself an Aperol Spritz. Sit down, relax, and let the flavors transport you back to the beautiful piazzas of Italy. Cin cin!

Agave Bar & Grill: Fredericksburg’s Hidden Gem for Authentic Mexican Cuisine

Agave Bar & Grill in Fredericksburg, VA, is a charming Mexican restaurant offering an authentic and diverse menu that caters to a wide range of tastes. My friend and I met for lunch a few weeks ago, and it’s our new favorite Mexican spot. It is apparent from the moment you walk in that the restaurant prides itself on its culinary excellence, which is quite evident in its fresh and flavorful dishes, excellent service, and impressive drink options.

We each indulged in a margarita alongside our meals, and we wished we would have done a flight because they were absolutely delicious. I ordered the mango one and loved the Tajin seasoning on the rim of the glass instead of the usual salt. The bar at Agave offers a fantastic selection of tequilas and mezcals. The knowledgeable bartenders and servers can guide you through the choices or craft a delicious margarita tailored to your taste. Additionally, the restaurant offers a variety of Mexican beers and crafted cocktails, ensuring that there is something for everyone.

Agave’s menu is a testament to the rich and diverse flavors of Mexican cuisine. It’s not just about the traditional Mexican favorites such as tacos, enchiladas, and fajitas, but also about the innovative dishes that put a modern twist on classic recipes. The quality of the food is consistently high, with fresh ingredients and careful preparation that highlights the rich flavors of Mexican cuisine. You can be reassured that every dish is a delight.

My friend ordered the tacos de asada for her meal, and she complimented the flavor and portions. I opted for the fajitas de asada, as steak fajitas are my barometer for my first meal at any new Mexican restaurant. They definitely measured up to my standards. Occasionally, places will skimp on the meat and fill the sizzling plate with too many onions or peppers, but not Agave. To my pleasant surprise, too, I loved the refried beans that came on the side, and I have never liked refried beans.

The service at Agave is another highlight. The staff is friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu, often providing recommendations and ensuring that your dining experience is enjoyable. The speed of service is commendable, even during busy times, which adds to the overall positive dining experience. Plus, the salsa and chips delivered upon arrival are always a hit.

For those looking for a more intimate setting, Agave offers a cozy bar area, ideal for enjoying a drink and some appetizers. The outdoor seating is perfect for warmer months, providing a great spot to enjoy a meal while taking in the ambiance of downtown Fredericksburg.

The restaurant also has Tacos & Tequila Tuesdays with specials on—you guessed it—those alliterative staples. On Thursdays, they offer a special discount for active duty/retired military, teachers, nurses, and first responders, which is always a great way to give back to those community members. The only limitation I observed from Agave is its size. It is on the smaller side, so reservations are recommended for larger parties. Otherwise, your taste buds are in great hands.

We’re still hoping our schedules can sync up again, and we can head down for Happy Hour one afternoon this summer, but I’d say Agave could fit the bill for whatever dining experience you’re looking to have, be it a casual date night, lunch with a coworker, or a girls’ night out on the town.

LEASHES OF VALOR:

SAVING LIVES, ONE LEASH AT A TIME

It’s no secret that war takes a toll on service members. Some return from war with visible wounds and scars, but many more return with wounds invisible to the eye— that’s precisely where Leashes of Valor steps in to help. Founded in 2017 by retired Marine Corps Capt. Jason Haag, this nonprofit organization provides service dogs at no cost to wounded and disabled veterans who served during and after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

“One Leash Saves Two Lives,” explained Haag, which encapsulates the organization’s mission to save both the dog and the veteran it serves.

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND LEASHES OF VALOR

Jason Haag’s journey to founding Leashes of Valor is deeply personal. A Marine with three combat deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, Haag faced numerous physical and psychological challenges.

“I was injured multiple times from machine gun fire and bomb blasts. I recovered from those injuries, but it was the invisible injuries I struggled with the most,” Haag shared. After being medically retired in 2013 due to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Haag experienced symptoms like nightmares, hyper-vigilance, anger, and isolation. Despite receiving treatment from the Department of Veterans Affairs, it wasn’t until he received his service dog, Axel, that he began to truly recover.

“Axel and I were together for ten years before his death in January 2023,” Haag fondly recalled. Axel’s impact on Haag’s life was both profound and transformative.

“I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my service dog, Axel. Axel truly saved my life,” Haag emphasized.

“Axel and I spent many years traveling the country, educating policymakers and the public about the life-changing impacts of service dogs for veterans suffering from PTSD and other ‘unseen’ injuries of war. I wanted that for as many other veterans as possible.”

THE PHILOSOPHY AND IMPACT

Motivated by his own experience, Haag founded Leashes of Valor to offer the same life-changing support to other veterans. “We’ve paired more than 32 service dogs with veterans. We’ve had zero suicides and so many success stories,” he proudly noted.

Leashes of Valor operates on the philosophy that pairing a veteran with a service dog can significantly improve their quality of life.

“Our dogs are often from shelters, rescue groups, or are owner-surrenders. The leash saves not only the dog’s life, but that of the veteran,” Haag explained.

Training a service dog is a long and expensive process, taking about two years and costing more than $25,000. However, the profound impact on veterans and their families makes it all worthwhile.

“The best part of my role is seeing a veteran’s face when they meet their service dog. They hope their lives will change, but they can’t yet imagine all the ways it will,” explained Haag.

“There is so much hope in their faces and demeanors, but sometimes skepticism, too, like ‘Will this be what finally helps me heal?’ And it is.”

© Best Version Media

COMMUNITY SUPPORT AND ENGAGEMENT

The success of Leashes of Valor is also a testament to the incredible support from the Fredericksburg community.

“We couldn’t have asked for a more generous and supportive community,” Haag said. “This includes individuals and families who’ve volunteered, hosted fundraisers, held donation drives, and fostered our service dog candidates.” The local business community has also been instrumental in supporting the organization’s mission.

One inspiring story from Leashes of Valor’s journey involved a hoarding situation in a neighboring county.

“Weeks after moving to our Fredericksburg location in February 2023, our trainers learned about an elderly woman with 28 puppies. She took wonderful care of them, but it was overwhelming. Our trainers did an evaluation and planned to get two puppies, but they brought home six,” Haag recalled. The unexpected addition of six puppies was “a challenge,” but the community’s support made it possible to integrate them into the program successfully.

Leashes of Valor also frequently hosts events to engage the community and raise funds.

“We always have events planned, and several of our service dogs in training are at every event.

You can find a list of our events on our website at leashesofvalor.org,” Haag mentioned. One notable event series is the Valor Cup Tournament, which helps raise money for their mission, and information about all upcoming tournaments is available at valorcup.org.

CONTINUING THE MISSION

Leashes of Valor continues to expand its reach and impact, always looking for new ways to support veterans. One key aspect of their program is their robust foster system for service dog candidates.

“We are always looking for fosters and have occasional, short-term, and long-term opportunities available. The more fosters we have, the more dogs we can have in our program and the more veterans we can serve,” Haag explained. The organization provides all necessary supplies and training for fosters, ensuring the dogs receive the best possible care and preparation for their future roles.

Haag also expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the greater Fredericksburg community.

“I want to thank this incredible community for everything they’ve done for Leashes of Valor. We couldn’t have done it without you.”

Through dedication, compassion, and community support, Leashes of Valor continues to make a profound difference in the lives of veterans and service dogs alike, embodying their motto that one leash truly can save two lives.

Summer Sports Camps at Colonial Forge

Allie Medina is a Colonial Forge rising senior and editor of their school newspaper, Talon Online News. Outside of writing, she plays for the Varsity soccer team. She also is co-founder and vice president of Forge’s Female Empowerment Club, which works to provide a platform for women-based acts of service.

It is imperative over the summer for kids to keep moving, get exercise, and interact with their peers. One of the most effective (and fun) ways to do this is athletic camps. This summer, Colonial Forge continued the county-wide tradition of hosting an array of student-run sports camps for a variety of ages and skill levels.

These camps include cheer, cross-country, tennis, basketball, and volleyball. Especially at the cheer camp, many of the younger girls felt inspired by the older athletes and made an impression over the week.

“They especially loved stunting because I think it made them feel like ‘big girl’ cheerleaders, like us in a sense,” said Ruth Chung, a varsity cheerleader.

And by the end, even in just the short week, a lot of the student-athletes felt like they were able to teach their little campers a big lesson on cheerleading.

“I think a lot of the time people think of cheerleaders as just pretty girls who stand on the sideline, cheering on the boys, but in actuality cheer is so much more than that,” said Chung. “I think seeing how we practice, tumbling, stunting, jumps, showed them how even though some people may just see us as girls on the sideline on Friday nights, we are strong and hardworking young women.”

Two weeks later, Forge would welcome runners ages 7-14 to its cross-country camp. Although running long distances can be a daunting idea, especially for younger and inexperienced athletes, luckily, dedicated counselors were there to coach them through it.

“Sometimes kids will come and start with running and walking, and it’s fun to help them be able to run the whole time by the end of camp. Seeing them fall in love with the sport you play every day is really rewarding,” Emily Hicks (‘25) shared.

Cross country is a sport of the mind, so when dealing with children, it can be difficult.

“We make sure at the end of the day that everyone is smiling and doing the best they can. We hope that every kid leaves with the motivation and encouragement knowing that they can do hard things such as running. We want them to learn how to persevere while having fun,” Hicks continued. It seemed that keeping the fun was a common factor in all of the camps, a factor probably influenced by the coaches’ and counselors’ engagement in teaching.

“Coach Spinelli and the high school students that run the camp are so passionate about the sport. This makes it such a fun experience for the kids because the energy is so energetic and there are so many great activities,” Jordan Schiffrin (‘25), a member of the CFHS field hockey team said.

Check the Colonial Forge High School website for more summer camp opportunities.

North Nation Takes on Student Employment

Nora Ahmad, a rising senior at North Stafford High School, is involved with the school’s DECA Club and the Book Buddy program. She harbors a strong interest in literature, journalism, business, and writing. Nora aspires to achieve her dream of becoming a published author one day.

Students at North have been spending their summer either on vacation, practicing sports, relaxing, or, in this case, being employed. Plenty of students at North Stafford have jobs throughout the year and a summer job. As we get ready to start the new year, rising juniors and seniors might want to consider a summer job as well.

Vaniya Ahmad, a 2024 graduate, encourages high schoolers to get a summer job at North. She has been working as a barista for almost a year.

“A summer job is something I would recommend because, with all of the difficulty that comes with school, especially your senior year, it’s nice to be able to save up money to get or do something that you like every once in a while. For some people, this is saving up for a car, and for others, it might be saving up luxury items.” Vaniya continued by talking about what she enjoys most about her job-- “experimenting with different drinks”-- and how she managed work and school since she decided to work throughout the school year.

“During my senior year, I was able to do early release. So I would just manage my time that way since I could have a few hours before work to do schoolwork or just chill.”

Other students, like Ashlena Oti-Boateng, decided to start their own businesses. A rising senior, Ashlena runs her own hairstyling business specializing in hair braiding.

“I have been braiding hair for two years now. I started braiding my own hair in the summer of ‘22 and recently started braiding hair for others about five or six months ago.”

Ashlena intends on working during school as well. “Going back to school, I plan on building my clientele and hopefully building my network with hair braiding; I plan on working during school for extra money since when I go back, I will be a senior, which is quite expensive.”

Senior year tends to be expensive, with all of the different events leading up to graduation. Ashlena encourages others to get a summer job so they can save money and do something that brings them peace and happiness.

“I enjoy braiding hair a lot. It helps me stay at peace, and while I braid hair, I genuinely feel happy.” She also talked about how her job will help her build

connections and mentioned how she’s changed since starting her endeavor.

“I feel as if starting your own business is a hassle and definitely requires discipline, so I’d say [I’ve become more] disciplined.”

A summer job or a job during school is a good idea because it can bring you joy and help you build connections with your peers. A job can also help you pay for the many expenses that come with school or even just have the money to treat yourself every once in a while. If you’re a student who is 16 or older, I recommend getting a summer job.

The Importance of Bathing Suit Color in Preventing Drowning

When it comes to swim safety, one often overlooked factor is the color of bathing suits. While the style and comfort of swimwear are usually prioritized, the color can play a crucial role in enhancing visibility and preventing drowning, particularly in crowded or natural water environments. Here’s why the color of your bathing suit matters and how it can make a significant difference in water safety.

VISIBILITY IN WATER: WHY IT MATTERS

In an emergency, every second counts. Quick detection and rescue are critical to preventing drowning. A brightly colored bathing suit can significantly improve visibility in the water, making it easier for lifeguards, parents, and other swimmers to spot someone in distress. The right color can enhance contrast against the water, whether it’s a pool, lake, or ocean.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT COLORS

Different water environments require different considerations for optimal visibility. Here are some guidelines for selecting the best colors for various settings:

Pools: In clear, blue-tinted pool water, neon colors such as bright orange, yellow, or lime green are highly visible. These colors stand out against the blue background and are easily noticeable from a distance, even in crowded settings.

Lakes and Rivers: Natural bodies of water like lakes and rivers often have murky, darker water. In these conditions, bright and contrasting colors such as neon yellow, bright orange, or even white are more visible. These colors create a stark contrast against the darker surroundings, making it easier to spot someone.

Ocean and Beach: The ocean’s varying hues and potential for waves require colors that stand out under different light conditions. Bright neon colors, especially neon yellow, pink, and green, can be seen against the waves and changing water colors. Avoid colors that blend with the water, such as blues and greens, as they can make it harder to locate someone quickly.

REAL-LIFE IMPACT: CASE STUDIES AND RESEARCH

Several studies and real-life case reports have underscored the importance of bright swimwear in preventing drowning. For instance, a study conducted by Alive Solutions, a water safety consultancy, tested various colors in different water conditions. The study found that neon colors were consistently more visible in both clear and murky water compared to darker colors like black, blue, and dark green.

In one documented case, a child wearing a bright orange swimsuit was quickly spotted and rescued after an accidental fall into a pool, while

another incident involved delayed detection of a child in a blue swimsuit, emphasizing the critical role of visibility.

ADDITIONAL TIPS TO ENSURE SWIMMING SAFETY

1. Learn to Swim- One of the best ways to stay safe around water is to learn how to swim. Enroll yourself and your children in swimming lessons. Many community centers and local pools offer affordable lessons for all age groups. Knowing how to swim can prevent accidents and save lives.

2. Never Swim Alone- Always swim with a buddy. Even experienced swimmers can encounter unexpected issues such as cramps or strong currents. Having someone with you ensures that there is always someone to help in case of an emergency.

3. Follow Safety Rules- Educate your family about water safety rules such as no running near the pool, no diving in shallow water, and not swimming without permission. Consistent reminders can help reinforce these important guidelines.

4. Supervise Children Closely- Children should always be supervised by an adult when they are in or near water. Designate a responsible adult as the “water watcher” who can give their undivided attention to watching the children. Avoid distractions like reading or using a smartphone while supervising.

While selecting a brightly colored bathing suit is a crucial step, it should be part of a comprehensive approach to water safety that includes constant supervision, swimming lessons, strength in numbers, and adherence to safety rules.

Transforming Your Outdoors to an Oasis

The enchantment of summer is upon us. Leisure and frolic have taken on new heights, and our outdoor spaces have become nature escapes. Tranquility and warm connections are calling. You can transform an outdoor eyesore into a tantalizing tapestry. King of his craft, Paul Gardner, owner of Artscapes, shares his expertise with us.

Consider the preferences of the homeowner. What is your primary goal for your outdoor space? Do you seek entertainment, relaxation, or aesthetics? Do you have any specific features in mind such as a glowing fire pit with comfortable seating, decorative water features, or an outdoor kitchen? Do you have a budget and a specific style in mind? Are there existing landscaping or structures to be incorporated or removed? What is the maintenance level you are comfortable with?

Make an outdoor space inviting.

This can be accomplished by landscaping, lighting, patio work, and decor. Use a variety of lush plants, trees, and seasonal shrubs to create a dynamic environment. Install pathway lights, string lights, or landscape spotlights for safety and ambiance. Use pavers for a durable, stylish patio floor. Embellish with outdoor cushions, throws, rugs, planters, and sculptures.

Dream of the ultimate outdoor summer gathering area.

A dream space could include a spacious patio or deck with ample seating and charming dining areas to invite family and friends. From here you could add an

elaborate outdoor kitchen, grill, and prep space. Position it close to the indoor kitchen for convenience. Include a sink, fridge, storage, and inviting counter for socializing. Integrate a pool or hot tub in the landscaping for ultimate, year-round relaxation. A nearby pavilion, pergola, umbrella, or awning could provide shade and comfort for guests. A cozy fire, string lights, landscape lights, and intimate lanterns perfect an evening gathering.

Use and maintain during fall and winter.

With fire features, use fire pits or outdoor heaters to extend usability into cooler months. Ensure ample lighting for shorter days. Use weatherproof furniture and consider covers or storage during the off-season. When using hardscaping, choose materials that can withstand freezing and thawing cycles. For plants, include evergreens and vegetation with berries or varied bark texture to maintain color vibrance.

Now it’s your turn. This is only the beginning. For more inspiration, explore home and garden magazines or websites, local botanical gardens or outdoor shows, and professional landscape design firms like Artscapes Outdoor Living.

Relax & Reconnect

And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.

I hope the month of July allows you the opportunity to relax, reconnect and create memories with your families and friends. I enjoy the sounds of my young adults being home from college. I chuckle at the fact that at dinner time, they are wondering what’s for dinner, like they can’t fix something themselves. Their memories of home are the day to day joys they reflect on and appreciate a little more by going away from home. Regardless of how you spend your July, summertime is like a family reunion to exhale a little and enjoy some long needed and well deserved downtime.

If you take a weekend or an evening to just relax and do nothing with your kids.

Kudos to you!

To the kids who may be working this summer, taking a summer school class or working on those college essays.

Kudos to you!

To the kids that go to tutoring to fill the academic gaps, attend academic camps or camps that interest you.

Kudos to you!

Are you spending quality time with family and friends? Volunteering? Traveling? Doing nothing?

Kudos to you!

Parents, we all deserve a moment to relax and enjoy the time with our children. Time goes so fast, so hold on to it now while they are home and before the school supply commercials begin!
