an amount of $1,000 per semester. Among the requirements for students to become eligible are enrollment in SBPLI’s FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Long Island robotics program while in high school for at least two years; a combined SAT score of 1100 or better; and enrollment in Farmingdale State College’s four-year programs in Mathematics,

Engineering Technology, Computer Systems or related fields of study.

All scholarship applications are due by March 1st. The winning recipient will be named at the 14th annual Long Island FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition, which will take place on April 4th-6th at Hofstra University.

Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco today welcomed Richard Salgado, also known as “Big Daddy” to the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in Riverside today to talk with young inmates in the Sheriff’s Special Youth Tier Initiative.

Salgado, who is a nationally known insurance broker to hundreds of celebrity athletes, is the owner of New York-based Coastal Advisors, LLC. Sheriff DeMarco’s Youth Tier Initiative was launched in September 2011 with the mission of promoting the successful transition of incarcerated youth, between the ages of 16 to

19, from jail to community life. The youth in the program receive intensive mentoring and educational services, and engage in a daily routine that promotes discipline and good habits.

The program has seen remarkable results since its inception.

Salgado, who spoke with the incarcerated youth inside the jail’s chapel, talked about how he went from being a poor student in high school to a success, and how certain people he met along the way influenced the course of his life: “It’s never too late to form new relationships.

The Computer Technology and Repair class at the Brookhaven Technical Center (BTC) prepares students with practical experiences and related theory leading to entry-level positions as computer repair technicians.

Recently, teacher Giovanni Chiarelli and his students received nonworking laptops which, after being fixed, could

be donated to students in need. As part of the project, *SkillsUSA students participated with one-toone student mentoring.

Joining forces with the Shoreham-Wading River CSD Global Awareness Club, the Eastern Suffolk BOCES students decided the laptops would go to Meru, Kenya via the Hope Children’s Fund (HCF), with whom the school district is connected.

On February 1st, fund board members and “youth travelers” visited BTC to accept the laptops on behalf of Meru’s impoverished children; none of them have ever seen a computer.

The laptops will increase educational opportunities for students at a facility, now under construction, that will eventually lead to their future employment.

Students from across Suffolk County were selected on a competitive basis, with NYSSMA scores as the main criteria in addition to teacher recommendations.

The district congratulates the following selected string students: fifthgraders Emily Bossert and

Elizabeth Chun; sixthgraders Hyun Jin Lee and Mayu Takeuchi; seventhgraders Ibuki Iwasaki, James Kennedy and Trey Pisano; eighth-grader Anita Rescia; ninth-grader Danielle Goldstein; 10thgrader Dunia Karzai; and 12th-grader Jonathan Chun.

Continuing with the school’s mission to instill a love of reading in students’ lives from an early age, Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School students and staff once again participated in the well-regarded Parents As Reading Partners program this February.

During the program, the students were encouraged to take time to read with

their families each day and keep a tally of the time they spent reading.

As a school, FJC celebrated reading by having a parent and his or her child read a new poem over the loudspeaker during the daily morning announcements.

Recognizing the importance of nightly story time, the school hosted a pajama reading

program, during which Principal Virginia Gibbons and Assistant Principal Dr. Courtney Herbert shared several stories aloud as the students and their families gathered on cozy blankets in the library.

After the story time, attendees had a chance to enjoy cookies and milk in the school’s cafeteria.

Ward Melville High School’s chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America has started this year’s competition circuit on a winning note, as several district students were ranked in the top three during written and speaking contests at the FBLA Regional Spring District Meeting at Molloy College in Rockville Centre.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Far too often, we are reminded of the fleeting nature of life; the fact that, in an instant, things can change, throwing any sense of normalcy and routine into complete upheaval. Whether by the hands of Mother Nature or some otherworldly force, many of these factors are far beyond our control, making it all the more crucial that we embrace those things we do, in fact, have control over.

One of my favorite films back in my high school Political Science class was Dead Poets Society, simply for the fact that its mantra of “Carpe Diem” seemed to make perfect sense. Seize the

day, capture the moment… live each day to the fullest.

You just never know what may be around the corner.

Certainly, there are times when something positive is on the horizon; surprises need not always portend tragedy and aggravation. It just seems that, on the whole, we as a society tend to take our lives – and those most important to us – for granted, never anticipating a day when this sense of contentment (read: complacency) might be turned upside down.

What can we do to prepare for this eventuality? Well, nothing and everything – all at the same time. There are those circumstances which reach far beyond our control;

the key is to take the given situation and make the most of it, and to move forward having learned something about ourselves. If this means taking more time to appreciate the little things in life…or savoring each moment with those we love… or simply reaching toward a long-unrealized goal… this is progress. This is positive.

This is appreciation.

This is not to say we will not each continually be faced with new obstacles each and every day – some minor, some life-changing – but at the very least, we will be better prepared to deal with them.

Carpe Diem always…

Those who seize the day are those who have few regrets.

On Tuesday, March 12th from 10 a.m. to noon, seniors are invited for a free, self-guided tour of the Long Island Museum’s student art exhibition, Colors of Long Island, sponsored by Astoria Federal Savings.

Grandparents may recognize some of the works by their own grandchildren in this annual exhibition featuring art work from more than

300 Long Island students in grades K through 12 from more than 100 schools.

Art teachers from across Long Island were invited to submit up to three pieces from each school and the exhibition includes works in all media – drawing, painting, photography, computer graphics, sculpture, etc.

Delayed originally due to Superstorm Sandy and on the cusp of Snowstorm Nemo, the Child Care Council of Suffolk, Inc. decided that the “show must go on” for their annual Champions of Children event at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York on February 8th.

Dr. Martin R. Cantor, CPA, keynoted the

program in which the Care Council of Suffolk honored two Long Island leaders – John Kominicki, president and publisher of Long Island Business News, and Sister Mary Hughes OP of the Dominican Sisters of Amityville. Close to 140 adventurous and dedicated supporters attended the event as the rain changed to snow in what became an historic Long Island

blizzard.

The Flame contest began last spring with Alda’s own childhood query: What is a flame? This year, the contest collected hundreds of questions from current 11-year-olds. Several asked “what is time?” or related questions, such as: How would you make a time machine? Why can’t you go back in time? Why does everyone age? How can you tell what time it is without looking at a clock?

How many dimensions are there? How did time begin?

“We don’t expect you to have the definitive answer,” said Elizabeth Bass, CCS director. “We would like entries to explore the nature of time from any scientific perspective – from physics to psychology, chemistry to computer science. Speculation is fine, as long as it’s clear you’re speculating. If you can intrigue kids, teach

With less than two weeks remaining, Alan Alda and the Stony Brook University Center for Communicating Science (CCS) are challenging scientists to explore a fundamental question asked by 11 yearolds: What is time?

Scientists have until midnight (EST) March 1st to submit written, graphic or video entries that discuss the nature of time in ways that would interest and enlighten an 11-year-old. About 20,000 schoolchildren from around the world already are signed up to judge the entries. Endowed Scholarship The Stony Brook University School of Journalism has received the pledge of a $25,000 gift from Stony Brook Senior Vice President of Administration Barbara Chernow and her husband, William Farber, to establish The Carol Chernow Memorial Scholarship In Journalism.

This gift will endow a scholarship to support the development of young writers – a life-long goal of the late Carol Chernow’s professional career.

Carol Chernow, mother of SBU Senior Vice President Chernow, was a Brooklynborn New Yorker, educated at Brooklyn College, who taught several subjects and grade levels in New York City public schools in Brooklyn and Staten Island.

Along with her husband, Fred Chernow – a New York City school principal, administrator, author and motivational speaker – Carol Chernow wrote several books on classroom teaching procedures and discipline, some of which remain in use today.

However, it was literature, writing and teaching

effective communication to a diverse group of children and adults that became her eventual focus and passion.

Chernow believed that one powerful way to open doors and promote equal opportunity was to equip all individuals with better language skills. Beginning in 1963 with the publication of “Reading Exercises in Black History,” she turned her energies to both teaching and creating practical educational resources for individuals in various communities.

She held that race, ethnic background, economic status, birth language or prior educational experience must not be barriers to learning effective communication in English for any of her students. In addition, Chernow realized that those differences offered educators the opportunity to create and utilize innovative material targeted at developing better language skills, reaching and engaging more students.

This was the basis of her approach to teaching, and you could call it her affirmative action plan for her students.”

The Chernow scholarship will be available to a qualifying full-time student enrolled in the School of Journalism at Stony Brook University. The recipient must demonstrate a desire to pursue a career in journalism with a proven talent and interest in writing and language. One recipient per year will be chosen by a selected committee appointed by School of Journalism Dean, Howard Schneider.

What some people forget, “says Dean Schneider, “is that even in the age of YouTube, good writing is the key to good journalism, no matter how that journalism is delivered. The Chernow scholarship will be invaluable in helping us to nurture that idea.”

Pedals For Progress

Long Islanders can put their old bicycles to good use by donating them to Pedals For Progress, a program that rescues unwanted American bicycles and sends them to communities overseas.

On Saturday, April 6th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., members of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island with the children and teen programs of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island will accept donations of bicycles and sewing machines at the Ethical Humanist Society, 38 Old Country Road, Garden City (at the western end of Old Country Road, next to the blue water tower).

for Progress has shipped 25,450 bikes to Nicaragua and 5,833 to Ghana, as well as thousands of bikes to Guatemala, Uganda and El Salvador. In many countries, having a bicycle can have a critical effect on whether or not you are able to get to a job or school; it has been found that income goes up 14 percent when a family has a bicycle. For many a sewing machine means having the possibility of making a livelihood.

Pedals for Progress also promotes bicycle repair businesses in the developing world. A community owned nonprofit bike store will get its first containerized cargo shipment for free (about 450 bicycles);

Each person who donates a bicycle will also be asked to donate $10 per bike (tax-deductible) to help defray the cost of shipping the bicycles.

The art deco Suffolk Theater opened in December 1939, and was

described as the most beautiful theater on Long Island. After many years of providing entertainment the theater was forced to close its doors in 1987, due to the shifting economy and the birth of the multiplex. Setting idle for the next 18 years, Bob and Dianne Castaldi purchased it in 2005 with the vision of creating a state of the arts performing arts center.

After years of planning and negotiations, and the support of the local government, the town board and the community, the theater will breathe with life once again.

The theater has been meticulously restored and transformed into a flex space, state of the art,

theatrical performance venue. Except for the replaced carpet, the interior of the theater is exactly as it was in 1933.

The theater interior flourishing, woodlandmotif murals and carvings, mosaic water fountain, woven wall coverings and crane-etched windows are all intact.

Internship Opportunities

On February 7th, the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Food Preparation/Services class welcomed Executive Chef Sean Fountaine, from the Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center and Hyatt Place East End Hotel, as guest speaker and presenter. He spoke to the students about workplace professionalism including job-readiness skills.

ESBOCES Chef Joy Graf said, “Chef Sean’s visit was planned as part of the unit on workplace professionalism which incorporates how to communicate in the workplace, getting along with co-workers, following directions, and how to prepare for interviews.”

Chef Fountaine engaged the students in a demonstration on how to beautifully prepare and plate a smoked mozzarella appetizer. The students

had the opportunity to display their learned skills by preparing one of their own.

Work Experience Coordinator Ray LoFrese and Chef Fountaine conducted mock interviews for three second- year students, Angela Bonilla and Gary Bell, both from the Riverhead CSD, and Steven Zapata from the Hampton Bays UFSD. All three students are scheduled to begin internships with Chef Fountaine in the coming weeks.

French Day

The benefits associated with studying a foreign language continue to mount as the world becomes a more globally driven society. In the Rocky Point School District, students are afforded the chance to study French, Spanish or Italian upon entering the seventh grade. To provide the current sixth-grade class with an introduction to the French language and the courses offered at both the middle school and high school, students currently studying this language worked with teacher Katerina Daly to coordinate a “French Day” in the middle school library.

“Our French program continues to draw interest from the students each

year, and we hope to be able to expand upon the class offerings in the future,” said Ms. Daly.

“The students really took the lead on this event, our first ever, and were eager to showcase the work they do in the class, including their senior cooking demonstrations that are videotaped.”

During the in-school program, seventh- through 12th-graders spoke with the sixth-graders in small groups about the beauty of the language and the culture and landscape of the French country. They also provided an overview of Rocky Point’s French program, including how the classes are conducted, and taught their younger peers how to say a few French phrases. Through

“I have felt consistently challenged by the program’s curriculum, and yet the lessons are always presented in a clear way that is easy to understand by the entire class,” said senior Emily Rosman, discussing the structure of the program. “I think that if any one of us were to travel to France tomorrow, we would not only be able to navigate through the city, but we would feel really prepared to live there for a while. It is because of this class that I want to explore a career as a translator in college.”
