HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR SPEAKS TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Robert Frost Middle School Marches Against Hate

As part of ongoing efforts to promote a culture of inclusivity and kindness within the school community, the World of Difference Club at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School recently introduced a March Out Against Hate schoolwide activity. The purpose was to raise awareness about the importance of combating hate and fostering acceptance and respect among students.

During homeroom, classes began the day by watching a “Sorry Isn’t Good Enough” video highlighting the impact of hate and the long-lasting

effects that hateful speech and behavior can have on others. They also discussed two main points: how to be an “upstander” and how to stand up to a bully or incidents of hate. Students involved in clubs and sports were then encouraged to participate by creating banners and signs with messages against hate.

Following the video presentation and signmaking activity, club students were invited to join together to walk the school’s track, a symbolic gesture that serves as a visible demonstration of their commitment to standing up against hate

and promoting a culture of respect and inclusion at Robert Frost Middle School and the world.

“We believe that activities like March Out Against Hate not only raise awareness but also empower students to be active agents of positive change within our school community,” speech language pathologist Stephanie O’Connell said. “By coming together as a community and taking a stand against hate, we can make a positive impact and create a school environment where everyone feels safe, respected and valued.”

May ‘Legislator At Your Library’ Community Outreach Program Dates And Locations

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to announce that he will be holding his popular “Legislator at Your Library” Community Outreach Programs at the Brentwood, Deer Park, Half Hollow Hills (Dix Hills Branch) and South Huntington Public Libraries on Thursdays in May where he will be providing a range of services to residents free of charge.

At all events, interested community members can speak with Legislator Donnelly, receive Suffolk County Senior IDs and get documents notarized free of charge. He will be joined by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office who will be providing Suffolk County Medical IDs. In addition, a “Shed the Meds” Safe Medication Disposal Box will be available at the Deer Park, Brentwood and South Huntington

programs. Medications can be placed in plastic bags, but if you are planning on bringing any in their original containers, it is strongly suggested you block out the names for anonymity.

The May “Legislator at Your Library” Community Outreach Programs are being held at:

• Deer Park Public Library, 44 Lake Avenue, Deer Park, Thursday, May 16, 11 am – 1 pm

• South Huntington Public Library, 145 Pidgeon Hill Rd, Huntington Station, Thursday, May 23, 1 pm –3 pm

• Brentwood Public Library, 34 Second Ave, Brentwood, Brentwood, Thursday, May 30, 1 pm – 3 pm

If you would like to have documents notarized, a licensed notary from Legislator Donnelly’s office will be present at each event.

Please remember to bring photo identification and do not sign any documents in advance.

“While I will continue to provide these services free of charge at my office, I wanted to give our local residents even more opportunities to receive access to all of the important programs offered by the county,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I am pleased to join with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office to bring these services directly into our communities. I thank the participating libraries for serving as host sites for these programs and encourage residents to drop by and visit.”

Holocaust Survivor Speaks To Deer Park High School Students

Deer Park High School and librarian Evan DeNaro recently welcomed Holocaust survivor Jeannie Parnes Wechsler to the high school library. Social studies classes taught by Joe Alo, Marissa Caruso, Hunter Hayes and Kerry Walsh, along with many high school staff members,

sat down with Wechsler as she shared her stories and experiences from those horrific years. Over the course of World War II, the Parnes family of two parents and seven children experienced many miracles that resulted in all nine members surviving the war and remaining together.

“Jeannie’s story is one to remind the people of today that events such as the Holocaust must never again come to pass,” Alo said. “It reminds us that we must remain vigilant in taking a stand against the hate and intolerance against people of other religions, races, and

ethnicities so that no one experiences an event like this. Jeannie expressed that it was always her mother’s wish that she tells the story of her family during the Holocaust, and by being with students and staff at Deer Park High School, Jeannie was able to continue to fulfill the

wishes of her mother.”

At the conclusion of her visit, Wechsler was asked if she had any lasting messages for those in attendance.

“I look out at all of your beautiful faces and I see people of different races and religions all together and learning as one,”

Wechsler said with a smile. “This is the way things should be. The similarities in our lives must outweigh the differences and by working together, we can make a better world, a world that we will all be blessed to live in.”

John F. Kennedy Intermediate School Students

Start Up Falcon Food Cart

Heather Buksa’s and Jennifer Zylberberg’s classes at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School recently started a Falcon Food Cart. Together, their students are working on communication skills and functional math

skills as they package up pre-ordered items and sell items on their cart to staff members in the building. Zylberberg created labels and communication prompts for students to be used to interact with customers. Profits earned from the Falcon

Food Cart will help support social and community gatherings for the classes.

“The students are learning skills that are taught in the classroom and carrying it over for authentic experiences,” Buksa said.
