visit from Will Flower from Winter Brothers and Mary Cascone, Town of Babylon historian. Working in the library, students delved into researching the state of waste on Long Island. Mr. Flower, an industry leader in waste management and environmental protection, spoke to students about how they can make a difference. Courses
Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers. The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.

The Long Island Kennel Club welcomes families and their fur children to the Long Island Island Kennel Club Show on Sunday, May 19 , from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the beautiful Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay. This year’s Long Island Kennel Club show follows the world-famous Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show earlier in the week. Many canine contenders are expected to leave the Big Apple and then head east to compete at the annual spring dog shows in Nassau County on Friday, May 17, through Sunday, May 19, all held at the same beautiful venue. Hundreds of superbly presented dogs –coiffed collies, pedicured poodles, dandified Dandie Dinmonts, and other breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club – vie for bragging rights as they contend for Best in Show. All are invited to this parade of pups to cheer on the winner of the coveted ribbon.

West Babylon Teams Take On Envirothon Competition
ENVIROTHON COMPETITION - Three teams from the Environmental Club at West Babylon Senior High School participated in the regional Envirothon competition on April 17. West Babylon had three teams representing the district at this year’s competition. Encompassing schools from both Nassau and Suffolk counties, the Envirothon competition gives students the opportunity to learn about local Long Island wildlife, forestry, aquatics, soil and current topics in energy and the environment. Students compete in each of these topics including an oral presentation about renewable energy. SIXTH ANNUAL CAREER DAY - Robert Moses Middle School in the North Babylon School District held its sixth annual career day on April 17. Organized by the school’s guidance department, more than 30 guest speakers from various career paths visited with students throughout the morning in their respective classrooms. Eighth grade student ambassadors helped to guide the presenters through the building.
