Kiwanis Club Of Lindenhurst Awards Seven Scholarships

The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst awarded seven deserving students from Lindenhurst High School with awards on April 30th at its annual Scholarship Dinner. Those recognized by the club are Khrystyna Blyschak, Marissa Howard, Florencia Salinas Beccera, Anna Longenberger, Donatella Cerini, Charlotte Peralta and Broc Brown.

This year, the Tony Lazio & Larry Troiano Memorial Scholarship, named in honor of two founding members of the club, were awarded to Charlotte Peralta and Broc Brown. Charlotte plans to attend John Jay College. Her

goal is to become a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist. Broc will attend the University of Alabama and study Sports Management. The William Jubak & Richard Heuwetter Key Club Scholarship is named in honor of the first Key Club advisors. These awards were given to Khrystyna Blyschak and Marissa Howard. Khrystyna will be attending Tufts University where she plans to study computer science. Marissa will be attending Sacred Heart University and plans to be a speech and language pathologist.

Nives Hoffmann Lozito

was an elementary school teacher at the Daniel Street school and dedicated her life to teaching children to read. The award named for her is given to a student who plans a career in elementary education. Florencia Salinas Becerra will attend Queens College.

Hon. Arthur M. Cromarty Hometown Heroes Scholarship was awarded to Anna Longenberger. Anna will be attending Binghamton University and plans to major in neuroscience, complete medical school and study eating disorders. Justice Cromarty was a founder

Lindenhurst Schools Named Top Destination For Music Learning School District Earns

Best Community For Music Education Award For Sixth Year

The Lindenhurst Union Free School District has been named one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation for 2024. This is the sixth year Lindenhurst Schools have received this special designation.

The Best Communities award is given to school districts across the

country that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education for all of their students.

Lindenhurst was among 975 school districts in the country to receive this recognition.

“We are very fortunate to have such great support of our music programs here in Lindenhurst,” said Dr.

of the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst, a veteran of World War II, and a leader in Suffolk County government. A new award was created and named for George M. Bryant, a Kiwanian for 50 years. It is the Career

and Technical Education scholarship granted to a student who has completed courses in CTE. Donatella Cerini is the first recipient of this award. She plans to attend Endicott College and be an architect.

Since 1960, the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst has awarded over $500,000 to high school seniors in furtherance of its mission to improve the world one child and one community at a time.

NEW SCHOLARSHIP CREATED - The Kiwanis Club created a new scholarship this year to honor students in the Career and Technical Education Program. It is named in honor of George M. Bryant, a member of the club for 50 years. Mr. Bryant was the owner of Akron Auto Service in Lindenhurst and served in nearly every executive board position in the club. Steven Castiglione Earns Eagle Scout Rank

During a recent Court of Honor Ceremony for Steven Castiglione, Mayor Michael Lavorata declared April 17th, 2024 as “Steven Castiglione Day” in the Village of Lindenhurst, and that all residents should

celebrate Steven’s outstanding achievement as an Eagle Scout. For Steven’s Eagle Scout project, he helped beautify a local creek by planting four Butterfly Bushes and two Forsythia Bushes. Additionally, he built and hung

two birdhouses with the help of his family, friends and fellow members of Troop 60.

Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “I am so proud of Steven’s accomplishment of becoming an Eagle Scout. Achieving the distinction of

Eagle Scout is no small feat, as it is the highest attainable rank in the Boy Scouts of America. It represents the culmination of years of dedication, perseverance, and commitment to the principles of scouting.”

Town Supervisors Advocate For Regional Shellfish

Together with a coalition of Nassau and Suffolk County Town Supervisors, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino is calling on state leaders to include funding for a Regional Shellfish Hatchery in the state budget. The initiative seeks to preserve Long Island’s maritime heritage and bolster shellfish stocks throughout New York, which will in turn improve local water quality and

provide regional economic benefits.

“The Town of Oyster Bay is a leader in sustainability, as our existing shellfish hatchery has been instrumental in enhancing the local shellfish population and filtering pollutants from our coastal waters,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Through collaboration with neighboring towns and state support for the Regional Shellfish Hatchery, we can extend these benefits across Long Island and beyond, ensuring a cleaner, healthier marine ecosystem for all.”

The proposed hatchery, to be located in Islip’s Hecksher Park, will serve as a hub for shellfish recruitment and resource enhancement in the Great South Bay. It will serve multiple purposes to meet the needs of the growing aquaculture community, promote economic growth, and ensure the continuation of the tradition of farming in the Great South Bay.

The Town of Islip’s current facility is rapidly aging and has been negatively impacted by climate change.

Town Supervisors from across Long Island have joined these advocacy efforts, including Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Riverhead Town Supervisor Timothy C. Hubbard, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Daniel J. Panico, Smithtown
