Seaford Manner Elementary The Seaford Manor Elementary School community came together for a spirited start to the school year on September 7th. New teachers and staff members were introduced at a kickoff assembly, and students were reminded of the school’s core values.

Student Council members made short videos about the six pillars of character that are followed at Seaford Manor: caring, citizenship, fairness,

respect, responsibility and trustworthiness. The students demonstrated the right way to act in common situations.

Principal Debra Emmerich, who coordinated the event with Assistant Principal Mary Ellen Kakalos and social worker Jennifer DiMieri, said the purpose of the event was to start the year on a good note and foster a positive school climate.

She reviewed rules and

expectations, and spoke to students about having a growth mindset; meaning that they should always be willing to grow and learn.

To show their Seaford pride, teachers donned green, and enthusiastically cheered with green pom poms. The Most Interesting Person in the Room Who you were, who you are, and who you will be are three different people.” - Unknown In my early twenties I transitioned from self-avowed tomboy to ultra-feminine girly girl, seemingly overnight, thanks to nature taking its course and queuing in to the fact that my appearance brought me attention.

My visage not only brought compliments, but also some much-needed pocket money, both during and after college, when I found work as a model. I can even recall on one occasion, literally stopping traffic. No, I’m not kidding. A gentleman stopped his car in the middle of a busy street in Brooklyn to attempt to flirt with me as I was crossing the bustling thoroughfare, bringing the traffic behind him to a midafternoon crawl. That was twentythree years ago. I was twenty-one years old.

When I look back on those years that seem like a lifetime ago, the shell may have been spectacular, but inside, I’m afraid, things were not. Had you asked me who I was back then, I likely would have

struggled to answer. Had you asked if I could write, I would have shrugged my shoulders and given you an “I dunno” glance.

Younger women in our culture are often conditioned to believe that our value lies in youth and beauty. It’s an unfortunate societal ill that keeps so many young women from developing a richness of character, a boldness of spirit, and from nurturing our most precious abilities.

Shortly after turning thirty, I conducted one of my first interviews as an entertainment journalist, with The View co-host, Joy Behar. Here I was, thinking I was a mature adult, when Joy said to me, “You know, your thirties is a great time to be honest with yourself so that your forties can be wonderful.” I realized that, to her, I was but a child. I was perplexed by her statement then, but I understand it now. It was in my thirties that I began to write professionally, I began to delve into reading, and I read everything I could get my hands on. I started keeping a journal, and I set about the business of getting to know myself, because

I had been a virtual stranger to myself in my twenties. It was also in my thirties that I got married, had my son, lost my grandparents, got divorced, and had to pick myself up and dust myself off. Life happened, and it stripped away the varnish and revealed character, humor, creativity, compassion and depth.

In my twenties I gleaned satisfaction from being considered the hottest person in the room.

In my mid-thirties, I began to experience a feeling of insecurity at the realization that I will never be twenty-one again and will most likely never be the hottest one in the room. Now, when I enter a room, I am aware that my skin is not quite as flawless, my waist not quite as tiny, and I have a few wrinkles under my belt; not to mention my broken nose (Long story! It involves a six-year old, a Shih Tzu and a toy).

But if you were to ask me how I feel now, my feeling is that I would much rather be the most interesting person in the room.

The Equity First Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit organization, which services clients all over Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress.

The Broncos kicked off the 2018 season on September 8th with their annual Opening Day Ceremony and Family Picnic. Following Bronco Board members and local dignitaries addressing the

crowd, all football players and cheerleaders from thirteen Bronco teams were introduced to an excited crowd.

Following the ceremony, Bronco families spent the remainder of the day

enjoying a family barbecue, entertainment provided by a DJ, bounce houses for the children, and many more fun activities. The day was a great success, and the Broncos are excited for another great season.

The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County (HMTC) presents the 2nd annual Walk the Talk… Never Again, Walk, on Sunday, October 28th, on the grounds of Welwyn Preserve, 100 Crescent Beach Road in Glen Cove, Registration is at 9:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 10:30 a.m.

This year’s Grand Marshal will be New York State Assemblyman Tony D’Urso who, along with his family, rescued Jews in Italy during the Holocaust.

The walk is a fundraiser to support HMTC’s education programs across Long Island that empower, mobilize and create Upstanders – people who stand up to antisemitism and intolerance, and advocate acceptance for all.

NYS Senate Majority Delegation called on MTA to Protect LIRR riders from a fare increase.

On Monday, September 17th, Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) was joined by the Senate Majority’s Long Island Delegation at a press conference at the Bethpage Train Station to call for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority

(MTA) to put any proposed 2019 fare hike on hold until it makes measurable improvements in its service, equipment failures and delays.

The press conference introduced legislation sponsored by Senator Elaine Phillips (7th Senate District), and Assemblyman Dean Murray (3rd Assembly District), to protect commuters

from facing even more disruptions due to the LIRR’s loss of any revenue.

The delegation, led
