Why You Need Advisors (and Truth Tellers) in Business and Life
By JoAnn Cilla
Running a business, and for that matter, running your life, is not a solo act. Behind every successful leader or entrepreneur is often a team of trusted advisors. These people aren’t just mentors or consultants; they are “truth tellers.” They are the ones who tell you what you need to hear, not just what you want to hear.
And today, truth tellers are more important than ever. A good truth teller should challenge your thinking, point out blind spots, and help you see the potential pitfalls before you step into them.
For business owners, this might be a financial advisor who warns against reckless spending, or a peer who questions whether your new product idea really solves a customer problem. For others, it could be a friend or spouse who helps you keep your priorities in check
when work starts to take over your life.
A strong advisor doesn’t sugarcoat the facts, but they don’t simply want to tear you down, either. The best advisors find the right balance between encouragement and accountability. They ask tough questions: “Have you thought this through?”
“Is this really the best use of your time and money?”
“What’s your plan if this doesn’t work?”
These relationships can mean the difference between growth and falling behind,
or between a crisis averted and one that could’ve been avoided. Advisors offer perspective. They’ve either walked the road you’re on or have the vision to help you see the bigger picture.
But here’s the thing: you MUST be open to hearing the hard truths. This means putting your ego aside and be willing to engage in honest, sometimes uncomfortable conversations. It’s not always easy—but it’s always worth it.
So, whether you’re just starting out or have been in business for years, take a moment to ask yourself: Who are my truth tellers? Who helps me stay grounded, focused, and honest? And if you don’t have anyone in that role, it’s time to find them.
Because no matter how smart, driven, or experienced you are, you will always do better with the right advisors by your side.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK:
Charred Green Beans with Lemon Verbena Pesto
Fire Up The Grill For Fresh Veggies
Vegetables are more versatile than many people may know. Steaming or sautéing vegetables might be among the most popular ways to cook veggies, but grillmasters know that it’s not just main dishes that taste great when cooked over an open flame. As the following recipe for “Charred Green Beans with Lemon Verbena Pesto” from Karen Adler and Judith Fertig’s “The Gardener & The Grill” (Running Press) can attest, grilled vegetables make for simple yet satisfying side dishes.
Fine kosher or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Directions:
Prepare a hot fire in your grill.
Toss the beans with olive oil and place in a perforated grill basket or wok set on a baking sheet.
For the Lemon Verbena Pesto, combine the lemon verbena, garlic, cheese, and nuts in a food processor and pulse to puree. Slowly add the olive oil with the processor running until the mixture thickens and emulsifies, about 1 minute. Season to taste with salt and pepper. The pesto will keep in the refrigerator for 7 to 10 days, or it may be frozen for up to 3 months.
Place the grill wok or basket directly over the fire and stir-grill, tossing the beans with wooden paddles or grill spatulas until crisp-tender, about 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer the grilled beans to a large bowl and toss with about 1⁄4 cup of the Lemon Verbena Pesto or to taste.

Learning Is A ‘Blast’ For Prekindergarten Students
As a culminating activity to their unit on space and the planets, prekindergarten students at Oquenock Elementary School in the West Islip Union Free School District blasted off into space to explore the solar system. Ms. Hudson’s classroom was transformed into a rocket ship, and the young astronauts – complete with their helmets and tickets– boarded the spacecraft to take a virtual journey into outer space together. Aboard the ship, the prekindergartners counted down as they launched into space and engaged in online lessons on the planets and solar system before returning to Oquenock Elementary.
